This paper studies the (small) quantum homology and cohomology of fibrations $p: P\to S^2$ whose structural group is the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms of the fiber $(M,\om)$. It gives a proof that the rational cohomology splits additively as the vector space tensor product $H^*(M)\otimes H^*(S^2)$, and investigates conditions under which the ring structure also splits, thus generalizing work of Lalonde-McDuff-Polterovich and Seidel. The main tool is a study of certain operations in the quantum homology of the total space $P$ and of the fiber $M$, whose properties reflect the relations between the Gromov-Witten invariants of $P$ and $M$. In order to establish these properties we further develop the language introduced in [Mc3] to describe the virtual moduli cycle (defined by Liu-Tian, Fukaya-Ono, Li-Tian, Ruan and Siebert).
We show that for each k > 3 there are infinitely many finite type Stein manifolds diffeomorphic to Euclidean space R^{2k} which are pairwise distinct as symplectic manifolds.
In this article, we generalize the results discussed in [arXiv:1004.3762] by introducing a genus to generic fibers of Lefschetz fibrations. That is, we give families of relations in the mapping class groups of genus-1 surfaces with boundaries that represent rational homology disk smoothings of weighted homogeneous surface singularities whose resolution graphs are $3$-legged with a bad central vertex.
We extend Perutz's Lagrangian matching invariants to 3-manifolds which are not necessarily fibred using the technology of holomorphic quilts. We prove an isomorphism of these invariants with Ozsvath-Szabo's Heegaard Floer invariants for certain extremal spin^c structures. As applications, we give new calculations of Heegaard Floer homology of certain classes of 3-manifolds, and a characterization of Juhasz's sutured Floer homology.
In their previous work, Barraud and Cornea enriched the Lagrangian Floer complex by adding cubical chains in the based loop space of the Lagrangian, and recovered the Leray-Serre spectral sequence of the based path space fibration, assuming that the Lagrangian is weakly exact and simply connected. In the present article, we remove the simple connectivity assumption and adapt the construction to any Hurewicz fibration. To this end, we introduce a stronger notion of local systems than the classical one, as a topological functor from the free path space of a manifold to the category of topologica…
Lipshitz, Ozsváth and Thurston defined a bordered Heegaard Floer invariant CFDA for 3-manifolds with two boundary components, including mapping cylinders for surface diffeomorphisms. We define a related invariant for certain 4-dimensional cobordisms with corners, by associating a morphism F from CFDA(f) to CFDA(g) to each such cobordism between two mapping cylinders f and g. Like the Ozsváth-Szabó invariants of cobordisms between closed 3-manifolds, this morphism arises from counting holomorphic triangles on Heegaard triples. We demonstrate that the homotopy class of the morphism F only depend…
Seidel-Smith and Manolescu constructed knot homology theories using symplectic fibrations whose total spaces were certain varieties of matrices. These knot homology theories were associated to $SL(n) $ and tensor products of the standard and dual representations. In this paper, we place their geometric setups in a natural, general framework. For any complex reductive group and any sequence of minuscule dominant weights, we construct a fibration of affine varieties over a configuration space. The middle cohomology of these varieties is isomorphic to the space of invariants in the corresponding …
In this paper the relations between the existence of Lagrangian fibration of Hyper-Kähler manifolds and the existence of the Large Radius Limit is established. It is proved that if the the rank of the second homology group of a Hyper-Kähler manifold N of complex dimension $2n\geq4$ is at least 5, then there exists an unipotent element T in the mapping class group $Γ$(N) such that its action on the second cohomology group satisfies $(T-id)^{2}\neq0$ and $(T-id)^{3}=0.$ A Theorem of Verbitsky implies that the symmetric power $S^{n}(T)$ acts on $H^{2n}$ and it satisfies $(S^{n}% (T)-id)^{2n}\neq0…
Symplectic Khovanov homology is an invariant of oriented links defined by Seidel and Smith and conjectured to be isomorphic to Khovanov homology. I define morphisms (up to a global sign ambiguity) between symplectic Khovanov homology groups, corresponding to isotopy classes of smooth link cobordisms in 4D between a fixed pair of links. These morphisms define a functor from the category of links and such cobordisms to the category of abelian groups and group homomorphisms up to a sign ambiguity. This provides an extra structure for symplectic Khovanov homology and more generally an isotopy inva…
We study Lagrangian cobordisms with the tools provided by Lagrangian quantum homology. In particular, we develop the theory for the setting of Lagrangian cobordisms or Lagrangians with cylindrical ends in a Lefschetz fibration, and put the different versions of the quantum homology groups into relation by a long exact sequence. We prove various practical relations of maps in this long exact sequence and we extract invariants that generalize the notion of discriminants to Lagrangian cobordisms in Lefschetz fibrations. We prove results on the relation of the discriminants of the ends of a cobord…
We construct examples of Lefschetz fibrations with prescribed singular fibers. By taking differences of pairs of such fibrations with the same singular fibers, we obtain new examples of surface bundles over surfaces with non-zero signature. From these we derive new upper bounds for the minimal genus of a surface representing a given element in the second homology of a mapping class group.
A classical way to construct a Lagrangian in a symplectic manifold $Σ$ is to let $Σ$ appear as a smooth fiber in a Lefschetz fibration. If this is possible the singularities of the fibration induce Lagrangian spheres in $Σ$ and these spheres, in turn, are representatives of the corresponding vanishing cycles in the homology of $Σ$. In this paper our aim is twofold: The first is to describe a generalization of the above mentioned construction to the "Morse-Bott" case. This leads, whenever such a degeneration exists, to the existence of Lagrangian sphere bundles rather than just spheres. In the …
The fundamental group $π$ of a Kodaira fibration is, by definition, the extension of a surface group $Π_b$ by another surface group $Π_g$, i.e. \[ 1 \rightarrow Π_g \rightarrow π\rightarrow Π_b \rightarrow 1. \] Conversely, we can inquire about what conditions need to be satisfied by a group of that sort in order to be the fundamental group of a Kodaira fibration. In this short note we collect some restriction on the image of the classifying map $m \colon Π_b \to Γ_g$ in terms of the coinvariant homology of $Π_g$. In particular, we observe that if $π$ is the fundamental group of a Kodaira fibr…
The paper explores some algebraic constructions arising in the theory of Lefschetz fibrations. Specifically, it covers in a fair amount of detail the algebraic issues outlined in ``Symplectic homology as Hochschild homology'' (math.SG/0609037). We also explain how the theory works when applied to a simple example, namely the Landau-Ginzburg mirror of P^2. Version 2: revised, many technical assumptions dropped, statement of one of the main results improved by using dg quotients. I changed the title accordingly.
A first order Vassiliev invariant of an oriented knot in an $S^1$-fibration and a Seifert fibration over a surface is constructed. It takes values in a quotient of the group ring of the first homology group of the total space of the fibration. It gives rise to an invariant of wave fronts on surfaces and orbifolds related to the Bennequin-type invariants of the Legendrian curves studied by F. Aicardi, V. Arnold, M. Polyak, and S. Tabachnikov. Formulas expressing these relations are presented. We also calculate Turaev's shadow for the Legendrian lifting of a wave front. This allows to use in the…
This is an announcement of the following construction: given an integral affine manifold $B$ with singularities, we build a topological space $X$ which is a torus fibration over $B$. The main new feature of the fibration $X\to B$ is that it has the discriminant in codimension 2.
We examine the action of the fundamental group $Γ$ of a Riemann surface with $m$ punctures on the middle dimensional homology of a regular fiber in a Lefschetz fibration, and describe to what extent this action can be recovered from the intersection numbers of vanishing cycles. Basis changes for the vanishing cycles result in a nonlinear action of the framed braid group $\widetilde{\mathcal B}$ on $m$ strings on a suitable space of $m\times m$ matrices. This action is determined by a family of cohomologous 1-cocycles ${\mathcal S}_c:\widetilde{\mathcal B}\to GL_m({\mathbb{Z}}[Γ])$ parametrized…
This paper completes the classification of regular Lagrangian fibratiopns over compact surfaces. \cite{misha} classifies regular Lagrangian fibrations over $\mathbb{T}^2$. The main theorem in \cite{hirsch} is used in order to classify integral affine structures on the Klein bottle $K^2$ and, hence, regular Lagrangian fibrations over this space.
We describe Lefschetz-Bott fibrations on complex line bundles over symplectic manifolds explicitly. As an application, we construct more than one strong symplectic filling of the link of the $A_{k}$-type singularity. In the appendix, we show that the total space of a Lefschetz-Bott fibration over the unit disk serves as a strong symplectic filling of a contact manifold compatible with an open book induced by the fibration.
Let M be a smooth 4-manifold which admits a relatively minimal hyperelliptic genus h Lefschetz fibration over the 2-sphere. If all of the vanishing cycles for this fibration are nonseparating curves, then we show that M is a 2-fold cover of a 2-sphere bundle over the 2-sphere, branched over an embedded surface. If the collection of vanishing cycles for this fibration includes separating curves, we show that M is the relative minimalization of a Lefshetz fibration N, with N a 2-fold branched cover of a rational surface, branched over an embedded surface.
For each g > 2 and h > 1, we explicitly construct (1) fiber sum indecomposable relatively minimal genus g Lefschetz fibrations over genus h surfaces whose monodromies lie in the Torelli group, (2) fiber sum indecomposable genus g surface bundles over genus h surfaces whose monodromies are in the Torelli group (provided g > 3), and (3) infinitely many genus g Lefschetz fibrations over genus h surfaces that are not fiber sums of holomorphic ones.
