On certain manifolds, the phase which appears in the scalar product of two coherent state vectors is twice the symplectic area of the geodesic triangle determined by the corresponding points on the manifold and the origin of the system of coordinates. This result is proved for compact Hermitian symmetric spaces using the generalization via coherent states of the shape invariant for geodesic triangles and re-obtained on the complex Grassmannian by brute- force calculation.
Let $M$ be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of compact type, and let $ω$ be its Kähler form. For a triplet $(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ of points in $M$ we study conditions under which a geodesic triangle $\mathcal T(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ with vertices $p_1,p_2,p_3$ can be unambiguously defined. We consider the integral $A(p_1,p_2,p_3)=\int_Σω$, where $Σ$ is a surface filling the triangle $\mathcal T(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ and discuss the dependence of $A(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ on the surface $Σ$. Under mild conditions on the three points, we prove an explicit formula for $A(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ analogous to the known formula for …
We show that if K: P \to R is an autonomous Hamiltonian on a symplectic manifold (P,Ω) which attains 0 as a Morse-Bott nondegenerate minimum along a symplectic submanifold M, and if c_1(TP)|_M vanishes in real cohomology, then the Hamiltonian flow of K has contractible periodic orbits with bounded period on all sufficiently small energy levels. As a special case, if the geodesic flow on the cotangent bundle of M is twisted by a symplectic magnetic field form, then the resulting flow has contractible periodic orbits on all low energy levels. These results were proven by Ginzburg and Gürel when …
Dedicated to Professor Gromoll: The aim of our article is to generalize the Toponogov comparison theorem to a complete Riemannian manifold with smooth convex boundary. A geodesic triangle will be replaced by an open (geodesic) triangle standing on the boundary of the manifold, and a model surface will be replaced by the universal covering surface of a cylinder of revolution with totally geodesic boundary. Applications of our theorem are found in our article "Applications of Toponogov's comparison theorems for open triangles" (arXiv:1102.4156).
In the present paper we study $S^2 \times R$ and $H^2 \times R$ geometries, which are homogeneous Thurston 3-geometries. We analyse the interior angle sums of geodesic triangles in both geometries and prove, that in $S^2 \times R$ space it can be larger or equal than $π$ and in $H^2 \times R$ space the angle sums can be less or equal than $π$. In our work we will use the projective model of $S^2 \times R$ and $H^2 \times R$ geometries described by E. Molnár in \cite{M97}.
The real symplectic Stiefel manifold is the manifold of symplectic bases of symplectic subspaces of a fixed dimension. It features in a large variety of applications in physics and engineering. In this work, we study this manifold with the goal of providing theory and matrix-based numerical tools fit for basic data processing. Geodesics are fundamental for data processing. However, these are so far unknown. Pursuing a Lie group approach, we close this gap and derive efficiently computable formulas for the geodesics both with respect to a natural pseudo-Riemannian metric and a novel Riemannian …
Recently we generalized Toponogov's comparison theorem to a complete Riemannian manifold with smooth convex boundary, where a geodesic triangle was replaced by an open (geodesic) triangle standing on the boundary of the manifold, and a model surface was replaced by the universal covering surface of a cylinder of revolution with totally geodesic boundary. The aim of this article is to prove splitting theorems of two types as an application. Moreover, we establish a weaker version of our Toponogov comparison theorem for open triangles, because the weaker version is quite enough to prove one of t…
We show that a small neighborhood of a closed symplectic submanifold in a geometrically bounded aspherical symplectic manifold has non-vanishing symplectic homology. As a consequence, we establish the existence of contractible closed characteristics on any thickening of the boundary of the neighborhood. When applied to twisted geodesic flows on compact symplectically aspherical manifolds, this implies the existence of contractible periodic orbits for a dense set of low energy values.
In this paper, we first generalize the common index jump theorem for symplectic matrix paths proved in 2002 by Long and Zhu in [LoZ], and get an enhanced version of it. As its applications, we further prove that for a compact simply-connected manifold $(M,F)$ with a bumpy, irreversible Finsler metric $F$ and $H^*(M;{\bf Q})\cong T_{d,n+1}(x)$ for some even integer $d\ge 2$ and integer $n\ge 1$, there exist at least $\frac{dn(n+1)}{2}$ distinct non-hyperbolic closed geodesics with odd Morse indices, provided the number of distinct prime closed geodesics is finite and every prime closed geodesic…
R Kerr's Ricci-flat Lorentz 4-manifold was shown by B Carter in 1968 to support a classically completely integrable system of geodesics; here we interpret this system in terms of a locally conformally symplectic structure, which we identify (§2.2) using characteristic classes defined by Kerr-Schild Cartesian coordinates (regarded as a map to the Cayley-Penrose compactification of Minkowski space). This leads to the definition of an interesting cobordism category of contact 3-manifolds and 4-dimensional locally conformally symplectic cobordisms between them.
We prove a pair of sharp reverse isoperimetric inequalities for domains in nonpositively curved surfaces: (1) metric disks centered at the vertex of a Euclidean cone of angle at least $2π$ have minimal area among all nonpositively curved disks of the same perimeter and the same total curvature; (2) geodesic triangles in a Euclidean (resp. hyperbolic) cone of angle at least $2π$ have minimal area among all nonpositively curved geodesic triangles (resp. all geodesic triangles of curvature at most $-1$) with the same side lengths and angles.
The aim of this paper is the geometric study of the symplectic operators which are a perturbation of the identity by a Hilbert-Schmidt operator. This subgroup of the symplectic group was introduced in Pierre de la Harpe's classical book of Banach-Lie groups. Throughout this paper we will endow the tangent spaces with different Riemannian metrics. We will use the minimal curves of the unitary group and the positive invertible operators to compare the length of the geodesic curves in each case. Moreover we will study the completeness of the symplectic group with the geodesic distance.
We prove a version of Topogonov's triangle comparison theorem with surfaces of revolution as model spaces. Given a model surface and a Riemannian manifold with a fixed base point, we give necessary and sufficient conditions under which every geodesic triangle in the manifold with a vertex at the base point has a corresponding Alexandrov triangle in the model. Under these conditions we also prove a version of the Maximal Radius Theorem and a Grove--Shiohama type Sphere Theorem.
We introduce in this paper a field theory on symplectic manifolds that are fibered over a real surface with interior marked points and cylindrical ends. We assign to each such object a morphism between certain tensor products of quantum and Floer homologies that are canonically attached to the fibration. We prove a composition theorem in the spirit of QFT, and show that this field theory applies naturally to the problem of minimising geodesics in Hofer's geometry. This work can be considered as a natural framework that incorporates both the Piunikhin-Salamon-Schwarz morphisms and the Seidel is…
A classical result of D. McDuff asserts that a simply-connected complete Kaehler manifold $(M,g,ω)$ with non positive sectional curvature admits global symplectic coordinates through a symplectomorphism $Ψ: M\rightarrow R^{2n}$ (where $n$ is the complex dimension of $M$), satisfying the following property (proved by E. Ciriza): the image $Ψ(T)$ of any complex totally geodesic submanifold $T\subset M$ through the point $p$ such that $Ψ(p)=0$, is a complex linear subspace of $C^n \simeq R^{2n}$. The aim of this paper is to exhibit, for all positive integers $n$, examples of $n$-dimensional compl…
A semi-Riemannian manifold is said to satisfy $R\ge K$ (or $R\le K$) if spacelike sectional curvatures are $\ge K$ and timelike ones are $\le K$ (or the reverse). Such spaces are abundant, as warped product constructions show; they include, in particular, big bang Robertson-Walker spaces. By stability, there are many non-warped product examples. We prove the equivalence of this type of curvature bound with local triangle comparisons on the signed lengths of geodesics. Specifically, $R\ge K$ if and only if locally the signed length of the geodesic between two points on any geodesic triangle is …
We observe that, in dimension four, symplectic forms may be obtained via Lorentzian geometry; in particular, null vector fields can give rise to exact symplectic forms. That a null vector field is nowhere vanishing yet orthogonal to itself is essential to this construction. Specifically, we show that on a Lorentzian 4-manifold $(M,g)$, if ${\boldsymbol k}$ is a complete null vector field with geodesic flow along which $\text{Ric}({\boldsymbol k},{\boldsymbol k}) > 0$, and if $f$ is any smooth function on $M$ with ${\boldsymbol k}(f)$ nowhere vanishing, then $dg(e^f{\boldsymbol k},\cdot)$ is a …
We investigate the rudiments of Riemannian geometry on orbit spaces $M/G$ for isometric proper actions of Lie groups on Riemannian manifolds. Minimal geodesic arcs are length minimising curves in the metric space $M/G$ and they can hit strata which are more singular only at the end points. This is phrased as convexity result. The geodesic spray, viewed as a (strata-preserving) vector field on $TM/G$, leads to the notion of geodesics in $M/G$ which are projections under $M\to M/G$ of geodesics which are normal to the orbits. It also leads to `ballistic curves' which are projections of the other…
In this article, we study the geodesic problem in a generalized metric space, in which the distance function satisfies a relaxed triangle inequality $d(x,y)\leq σ(d(x,z)+d(z,y))$ for some constant $σ\geq 1$, rather than the usual triangle inequality. Such a space is called a quasimetric space. We show that many well-known results in metric spaces (e.g. Ascoli-Arzelà theorem) still hold in quasimetric spaces. Moreover, we explore conditions under which a quasimetric will induce an intrinsic metric. As an example, we introduce a family of quasimetrics on the space of atomic probability measures.…
The main result in this paper is the $C^{\infty}$ closing lemma for a large family of Hamiltonian flows on $4$-dimensional symplectic manifolds, which includes classical Hamiltonian systems. First we prove the $C^{\infty}$ closing lemma and the $C^r$ general density theorem for geodesic flows on closed Finsler surfaces by combining a result of Asaoka-Irie with the dual lens map technique. Then we extend our results to Hamitonian flows with certain restriction. We also list some applications of our results in differential geometry and contact topology.
Let $M$ be either the 2-sphere $\SS^2 \subset\RR^3$ or the hyperbolic plane $\HH^2 \subset \RR^3$. If $Δ(abc)$ is a geodesic triangle on $M$ with corners at $a,b,c\in M$, we denote by $α, β, γ\in M$ the midpoints of their sides. If $Ω$ denotes the oriented area of this triangle on $M$, it satisfies the relations: $$ \sin(Ω/2) = \frac{\Det_3(abc)}{\sqrt{2(1 + \scalar{a}b)(1 + \scalar{b}c)(1 + \scalar{c}a)}} = \Det_3(αβγ) \, $$ where $\scalar{\}{\}$ denotes the Euclidean scalar product for $M=\SS^2$ and the Lorentzian scalar product for $M=\HH^2$. On the hyperbolic plane one should always take t…
We use closed geodesics to construct and compute Bott-type Morse homology groups for the energy functional on the loop space of flat $n$-dimensional tori, $n\ge 1$, and Bott-type Floer cohomology groups for their cotangent bundles equipped with the natural symplectic structure. Both objects are isomorpic to the singular homology of the loop space. In an appendix we perturb the equations in order to eliminate degeneracies and to get to a situation with nondegenerate critical points only. The (co)homology groups turn out to be invariant under the perturbation.
For a closed symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ with compatible Riemannian metric $g$ we study the Sobolev $H^1$ geometry of the group of all $H^s$ diffeomorphisms on $M$ which preserve the symplectic structure. We show that, for sufficiently large $s$, the $H^1$ metric admits globally defined geodesics and the corresponding exponential map is a non-linear Fredholm map of index zero. Finally, we show that the $H^1$ metric carries conjugate points via some simple examples.
Shape spaces are fundamental in a variety of applications including image registration, morphing, matching, interpolation, and shape optimization. In this work, we consider two-dimensional shapes represented by triangular meshes of a given connectivity. We show that the collection of admissible configurations representable by such meshes form a smooth manifold. For this manifold of planar triangular meshes we propose a geodesically complete Riemannian metric. It is a distinguishing feature of this metric that it preserves the mesh connectivity and prevents the mesh from degrading along geodesi…
