Let V be a compact real analytic surface with isolated singularities embedded in $R^N$, and assume its smooth part is equipped with a Riemannian metric that is induced from some analytic Riemannian metric on $R^N$. We prove:
1. Each point of V has a neighborhood which is quasi-isometric (naturally and 'almost isometrically') to a union of metric cones and horns, glued at their tips.
2. A full asymptotic expansion, for any $p\in V$, of the length of $V\cap\{q:\dist(q,p)=r\}$ as r tends to zero.
3. A Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, saying that horns do not contribute an extra term, while cones contribute the leading coefficient in the length expansion of 2.
4. The $L^2$ Stokes Theorem, self-adjointness and discreteness of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the smooth part, and a Gauss-Bonnet Theorem for the $L^2$ Euler characteristic.
As a central tool we use resolution of singularities.
We define a generalization of convex functions, which we call $δ$-convex functions, and show they must satisfy interior Hölder and $W^{1,p}$ estimates. As an application, we consider solutions of a certain class of fully nonlinear equations in conformal geometry with isolated singularities, in the case of non-negative Ricci curvature. We prove that such solutions either extend to a Hölder continuous function across the singularity, or else have the same singular behavior as the fundamental solution of the conformal Laplacian. We also obtain various removable singularity theorems for these equa…
This paper surveys some recent results on existence, uniqueness and removable singularities for fully nonlinear differential equations on manifolds. The discussion also treats restriction theorems and the strong Bellman principle.
We describe some natural relations connecting contact geometry, classical Monge-Ampere equations and theory of singularities of solutions to nonlinear PDEs. They reveal the hidden meaning of Monge-Ampere equations and sheds new light on some aspects of contact geometry.
Let $(M,g)$ be a surface with Riemannian metric and curved conic singularities. More precisely, a neighbourhood of a singularity is isometric to $(0,1)\times S^1$ with metric $g_{\text{conic}}=dr^2+f(r)^2dθ^2, r\in(0,1)$. We study the spectral geometry of $(M,g)$ using the heat trace expansion. We express the first few terms in the expansion through the geometry of the singularities. The constant term contains information about the angle at the tip of the cone. The next term, $bt^{1/2}$, is expressed through the curvature and the angle at the tip of the cone.
I prove the existence of small time heat expansion for the Laplace operator on an analytic hypersurface with an isolated singularity. First we obtain a local parametrization of the hypersurface near the singularity. We introduce the notion of quasihomogeneous tangent cone. Then perturb the parametrization of the cone employing a Newton scheme and obtain a parametrization with functions of specific form. These allow us to obtain local models for the Laplace operator near the singularity. These are operators with irregular singularities. We derive the estimates required by singular asymptotics.
The conditions for a cuspidal edge, swallowtail and other fundamental singularities are given in the context of Lie sphere geometry. We then use these conditions to study the Lie sphere transformations of a surface.
We prove well-posedness and regularity results for elliptic boundary value problems on certain domains with a smooth set of singular points. Our class of domains contains the class of domains with isolated oscillating conical singularities, and hence they generalize the classical results of Kondratiev on domains with conical singularities. The proofs are based on conformal changes of metric, on the differential geometry of manifolds with boundary and bounded geometry, and on our earlier results on manifolds with boundary and bounded geometry.
We express two CR invariant surface area elements in terms of quantities in pseudohermitian geometry. We deduce the Euler-Lagrange equations of the associated energy functionals. Many solutions are given and discussed. In relation to the singular CR Yamabe problem, we show that one of the energy functionals appears as the coefficient (up to a constant multiple) of the log term in the associated volume renormalization.
We study the flat geometry of the least degenerate singularity of a singular surface in $\mathbb R^4$, the $I_{1}$ singularity parametrised by $(x,y)\mapsto(x,xy,y^{2},y^{3})$. This singularity appears generically when projecting a regular surface in $\mathbb R^5$ orthogonally to $\mathbb R^4$ along a tangent direction. We obtain a generic normal form for $I_1$ invariant under diffeomorphisms in the source and isometries in the target. We then consider the contact with hyperplanes by classifying submersions which preserve the image of $I_1$. The main tool is the study of the singularities of t…
If $U:[0,+\infty[\times M$ is a uniformly continuous viscosity solution of the evolution Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$\partial_tU+ H(x,\partial_xU)=0,$$ where $M$ is a not necessarily compact manifold, and $H$ is a Tonelli Hamiltonian, we prove the set $Σ(U)$, of points where $U$ is not differentiable, is locally contractible. Moreover, we study the homotopy type of $Σ(U)$. We also give an application to the singularities of a distance function to a closed subset of a complete Riemannian manifold.
We study and completely describe pairs of compatible Poisson structures near singular points of the recursion operator satisfying natural non-degeneracy condition.
Playing off against each other the real and complex structures, we elucidate the local structure of certain representation spaces in the world of Poisson geometry. Particular cases of these spaces arise as moduli spaces of semistable holomorphic vector bundles on Riemann surfaces.
In this work, we study some convex cones associated to isotropic representations of symmetric spaces. We explain the inequalities that describe them by means of cohomological conditions. In particular, we study the singular Horn cone which is the counterpart of the classical Horn cone, where the eigenvalues of Hermitian square matrices are replaced by the singular values of rectangular matrices.
We study the geometry of surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ with corank $1$ singularities. For such surfaces the singularities are isolated and at each point we define the curvature parabola in the normal space. This curve codifies all the second order information of the surface. Also, using this curve we define asymptotic and binormal directions, the umbilic curvature and study the flat geometry of the surface. It is shown that we can associate to this singular surface a regular one in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ and relate their geometry.
We study the geometry of cuspidal $S_k$ singularities in $\mathbb R^3$ obtained by folding generically a cuspidal edge. In particular we study the geometry of the cuspidal cross-cap $M$, i.e. the cuspidal $S_0$ singularity. We study geometrical invariants associated to $M$ and show that they determine it up to order 5. We then study the flat geometry (contact with planes) of a generic cuspidal cross-cap by classifying submersions which preserve it and relate the singularities of the resulting height functions with the geometric invariants.
We study the geometry of the cuspidal edge $M$ in $\mathbb R^3$ derived from its contact with planes and lines (referred to as flat geometry). The contact of $M$ with planes is measured by the singularities of the height functions on $M$. We classify submersions on a model of $M$ by diffeomorphisms and recover the contact of $M$ with planes from that classification. The contact of $M$ with lines is measured by the singularities of orthogonal projections of $M$. We list the generic singularities of the projections and obtain the generic deformations of the apparent contour (profile) when the di…
We review our study of Sasakian geometry as an agent for proving the existence of Einstein metrics on odd dimensional manifolds. Particular emphasis is given to the Sasakian structures occuring on links of isolated hypersurface singularities.
We study the geometry of the leaf closure space of regular and singular Riemannian foliations. We give conditions which assure that this leaf space is a singular symplectic or Kähler space.
We use normal sections to relate the curvature locus of regular (resp. singular corank 1) 3-manifolds in $\mathbb{R}^6$ (resp. $\mathbb R^5$) with regular (resp. singular corank 1) surfaces in $\mathbb R^5$ (resp. $\mathbb R^4$). For example we show how to generate a Roman surface by a family of ellipses different to Steiner's way. Furthermore, we give necessary conditions for the 2-jet of the parametrisation of a singular 3-manifold to be in a certain orbit in terms of the topological types of the curvature loci of the singular surfaces obtained as normal sections. We also study the relations…
This is the second in a series of papers where we estab- lish skin structural concepts and results for singular area minimizing hypersurfaces. Here we conformally unfold these spaces to complete Gromov hyperbolic spaces with bounded geometry and we recover their singular set as the Gromov boundary but also as the Martin boundary for many classical elliptic operators.
For a generic embedding of a smooth closed surface $M$ into $\mathbb R^4$, the subset of $\mathbb R^4$ which is the affine $λ$-equidistant of $M$ appears as the discriminant set of a stable mapping $M \times M \to \mathbb R^4$, hence their stable singularities are $A_k, \, k=2, 3, 4,$ and $C_{2,2}^{\pm}$. In this paper, we characterize these stable singularities of $λ$-equidistants in terms of the bi-local extrinsic geometry of the surface, leading to a geometrical study of the set of weakly parallel points on $M$.
At each point in an immersed surface in $\mathbb R^4$ there is a curvature ellipse in the normal plane which codifies all the local second order geometry of the surface. More recently, at the singular point of a corank 1 singular surface in $\mathbb R^3$, a curvature parabola in the normal plane which codifies all the local second order geometry has been defined. When projecting a regular surface in $\mathbb R^4$ to $\mathbb R^3$ in a tangent direction corank 1 singularities appear generically. The projection has a cross-cap singularity unless the direction of projection is asymptotic, where m…
In this article the degenerate warped products of singular semi-Riemannian manifolds are studied. They were used recently by the author to handle singularities occurring in General Relativity, in black holes and at the big-bang. One main result presented here is that a degenerate warped product of semi-regular semi-Riemannian manifolds with the warping function satisfying a certain condition is a semi-regular semi-Riemannian manifold. The connection and the Riemann curvature of the warped product are expressed in terms of those of the factor manifolds. Examples of singular semi-Riemannian mani…
We prove the logarithmic divergence of equivariant analytic torsion for one-parameter degenerations of projective algebraic manifolds, when the coefficient vector bundle is given by a Nakano semi-positive vector bundle twisted by the relative canonical bundle.
The information loss occurs in an evaporating black hole only if the time evolution ends at the singularity. But as we shall see, the black hole solutions admit analytical extensions beyond the singularities, to globally hyperbolic solutions. The method used is similar to that for the apparent singularity at the event horizon, but at the singularity, the resulting metric is degenerate. When the metric is degenerate, the covariant derivative, the curvature, and the Einstein equation become singular. However, recent advances in the geometry of spacetimes with singular metric show that there are …
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler unibranch complex analytic space of pure dimension. Fix a big class $α$ with smooth representative $θ$ and a model potential $ϕ$ with positive mass. We define and the study non-pluripolar products of quasi-plurisubharmonic functions on $X$. We study the spaces $\mathcal{E}^p(X,θ;[ϕ])$ of finite energy Kähler potentials with prescribed singularities for each $p\geq 1$. We define a metric $d_p$ and show that $(\mathcal{E}^p(X,θ;[ϕ]),d_p)$ is a complete metric space. This construction generalizes the usual $d_p$-metric defined for an ample class.
We develop the theory of weighted Ricci curvature in a weighted Lorentz-Finsler framework and extend the classical singularity theorems of general relativity. In order to reach this result, we generalize the Jacobi, Riccati and Raychaudhuri equations to weighted Finsler spacetimes and study their implications for the existence of conjugate points along causal geodesics. We also show a weighted Lorentz-Finsler version of the Bonnet-Myers theorem based on a generalized Bishop inequality.
Let $Y$ be a compact Kähler normal space and $α\in H^{1,1}(Y,\mathbb{R})$ a Kähler class. We study metric properties of the space $\mathcal{H}_α$ of Kähler metrics in $α$ using Mabuchi geodesics. We extend several results by Calabi, Chen, Darvas previously established when the underlying space is smooth. As an application we analytically characterize the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties, generalizing a result of Tian, and illustrate these concepts in the case of toric varieties.
In previous papers (arxiv:math/0612370 and arxiv:0909.1342) we defined the C*-algebra and the longitudinal pseudodifferential calculus of any singular foliation (M,F). Here we construct the analytic index of an elliptic operator as a KK-theory element, and prove that the same element can be obtained from an "adiabatic foliation" TF on $M \times \R$, which we introduce here.
This brief survey aims to set the stage and summarize some of the ideas under discussion at the Workshop on Singular Geometry and Higgs Bundles in String Theory, to be held at the American Institute of Mathematics from October 30th to November 3rd, 2017. One of the most interesting aspects of the duality revolution in string theory is the understanding that gauge fields and matter representations can be described by intersection of branes. Since gauge theory is at the heart of our description of physical interactions, it has opened the door to the geometric engineering of many physical systems…
An analytic extension of the Reissner-Nordstrom solution at and beyond the singularity is presented. The extension is obtained by using new coordinates in which the metric becomes degenerate at $r=0$. The metric is still singular in the new coordinates, but its components become finite and smooth. Using this extension it is shown that the charged and non-rotating black hole singularities are compatible with the global hyperbolicity and with the conservation of the initial value data. Geometric models for electrically charged particles are obtained.
Recent results show that important singularities in General Relativity can be naturally described in terms of finite and invariant canonical geometric objects. Consequently, one can write field equations which are equivalent to Einstein's at non-singular points, but in addition remain well-defined and smooth at singularities. The black hole singularities appear to be less undesirable than it was thought, especially after we remove the part of the singularity due to the coordinate system. Black hole singularities are then compatible with global hyperbolicity, and don't make the evolution equati…
We summarize the main ideas of General Relativity and Lorentzian geometry, leading to a proof of the simplest of the celebrated Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems. The reader is assumed to be familiar with Riemannian geometry and point set topology.
