It is shown that the integrability conditions of the equations satisfied by the local Frenet frame associated with a holomorphic curve in a complex Grassmann manifold coincide with a special class of nonabelian Toda equations. A local moving frame of a holomorphic immersion of a Riemann surface into a complex Grassmann manifold is constructed and the corresponding connection coefficients are calculated.
The main drawback of the Frenet frame is that it is undefined at those points where the curvature is zero. Further- more, in the case of planar curves, the Frenet frame does not agree with the standard framing of curves in the plane. The main drawback of the Bishop frame is that the principle normal vector N is not in it. Our new frame, which we call the Beta frame, combines, on a large set of curves, the best aspects of the Bishop frames and the Frenet frames. It yields a globally defined normal, a globally defined signed curvature, and a globally defined torsion. For planar curves it agrees …
The paper proposes a generalization of the Park transform based on the Frenet frame, which is a special set of coordinates defined in differential geometry for space curves. The proposed geometric transform is first discussed for three dimensions, which correspond to the common three-phase circuits. Then, the expression of the time derivative of the proposed transform is discussed and the Frenet-Serret formulas and the Darboux vector are introduced. The change of reference frame and its differentiation based on Cartan's moving frames and attitude matrices are also described. Finally, the exten…
A one-dimensional space curve in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ is a useful nonlinear medium for modeling vortex filaments and biological soft-matter capable of supporting a variety of wave motions. The Hasimoto transformation defines a mapping between the kinematic evolution of a space curve and nonlinear scalar equations evolving its intrinsic curve geometry. This mapping is quite robust and able to transform general vector fields expressed in the Frenet frame, resulting in a fully nonlinear integro-differential evolution equation, whose coefficient structure is defined by the coordinates of the flow in t…
Time-delay embeddings and dimensionality reduction are powerful techniques for discovering effective coordinate systems to represent the dynamics of physical systems. Recently, it has been shown that models identified by dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) on time-delay coordinates provide linear representations of strongly nonlinear systems, in the so-called Hankel alternative view of Koopman (HAVOK) approach. Curiously, the resulting linear model has a matrix representation that is approximately antisymmetric and tridiagonal with a zero diagonal; for chaotic systems, there is an additional forc…
In this paper we study slant null curves with respect to the original parameter on 3-dimensional normal almost contact B-metric manifolds with parallel Reeb vector field. We prove that for non-geodesic such curves there exists a unique Frenet frame for which the original parameter is distinguished. Moreover, we obtain a necessary condition this Frenet frame to be a Cartan Frenet frame with respect to the original parameter. Examples of the considered curves are constructed.
We deal with a notion of weak binormal and weak principal normal for non-smooth curves of the Euclidean space with finite total curvature and total absolute torsion. By means of piecewise linear methods, we first introduce the analogous notation for polygonal curves, where the polarity property is exploited, and then make use of a density argument. Both our weak binormal and normal are rectifiable curves which naturally live in the projective plane. In particular, the length of the weak binormal agrees with the total absolute torsion of the given curve. Moreover, the weak normal is the vector …
In this paper, the Cartan frames and the equi-affine curvatures are described with the help of the Frenet frames and the Frenet curvatures of a non-null and non-degenerate curve in a 3-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold. The constancy of the Frenet curvatures of such a curve always implies the constancy of the equi-affine curvatures. We show that the converse statement does not hold in general. Finally, we study the equi-affine curvatures of null curves in 3-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds, and prove that they are related to their pseudo-torsion.
In this paper, we express surfaces parametrically through a given spacelike (timelike) asymptotic curve using the Frenet frame of the curve in Minkowski 3-space. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the coefficients of the Frenet frame to satisfy both parametric and asymptotic requirements are derived. We also present some interesting examples to show the validity of this study.
The {\em focal curve} of an immersed smooth curve $γ:s\mapsto γ(s)$, in Euclidean space $\R^{m+1}$, consists of the centres of its osculating hyperspheres. The focal curve may be parametrised in terms of the Frenet frame of $γ$ (${\bf t},{\bf n}_1, ...,{\bf n}_m$), as $C_γ(s)=(γ+c_1{\bf n}_1+c_2{\bf n}_2+...+c_m{\bf n}_m)(s)$, where the coefficients $c_1,...,c_{m-1}$ are smooth functions that we call the {\em focal curvatures} of $γ$. We discovered a remarkable formula relating the Euclidean curvatures $κ_i$, $i=1,...,m$, of $γ$ with its focal curvatures. We show that the focal curvatures sati…
We consider a unit speed timelike curve $α$ in Minkowski 4-space $E_1^4$ and denote the Frenet frame of $α$ by $\{T,N,B_1,B_2\}$. We say that $α$ is a generalized helix if one of the unit vector fields of the Frenet frame has constant scalar product with a fixed direction $U$ of $E_1^4$. In this work we study those helices where the function $<B_2,U>$ is constant and we give different characterizations of such curves.
In classical curve theory, the geometry of a curve in three dimensions is essentially characterized by their invariants, curvature and torsion. When they are given, the problem of finding a corresponding curve is known as 'solving natural equations'. Explicit solutions are known only for a handful of curve classes, including notably the plane curves and general helices. This paper shows constructively how to solve the natural equations explicitly for an infinite series of curve classes. For every Frenet curve, a family of successor curves can be constructed which have the tangent of the origin…
In this paper, we investigate Mannheim pairs, Frenet-Mannheim curves and Weakened Mannheim curves with respect to the modified orthogonal frame in Euclidean 3-space(E 3 ). We obtain some characterizations of these curves.
In this paper, we study spinor Bishop equations of curves in E^3. We research the spinor formulations of curves according to Bishop frames in E^3. Also, the relation between spinor formulations of Bishop frames and Frenet frame are expressed.
The Frenet frame is generally known an orthonormal vector frame for curves. But, it does not always meet the needs of curve characterizations. In this study, with the help of associated curves of any spatial curve we obtained a new orthonormal frame which has the property that the second vector makes a constant angle with a fixed direction for the spatial curve. Then, the curve is named as the N_k slant helix and the special conditions are obtained effectively.
We consider a curve $α=α(s)$ in Minkowski 3-space $E_1^3$ and denote by $\{T,N,B}$ the Frenet frame of $α$. We say that $α$ is a slant helix if there exists a fixed direction $U$ of $E_1^3$ such that the function $<N(s),U>$ is constant. In this work we give characterizations of slant helices in terms of the curvature and torsion of $α$.
Let $γ: I \rightarrow \mathbb R^n$ be a parametric curve of class $C^{n+1}$, regular of order $n$. The Frenet-Serret apparatus of $γ$ at $γ(t)$ consists of a frame $e_1(t), \dots , e_n(t)$ and generalized curvature values $κ_1(t), \dots, κ_{n-1}(t)$. Associated with each point of $γ$ there are also local singular vectors $u_1(t), \dots, u_n(t)$ and local singular values $σ_1(t), \dots, σ_{n}(t)$. This local information is obtained by considering a limit, as $ε$ goes to zero, of covariance matrices defined along $γ$ within an $ε$-ball centered at $γ(t)$. We prove that for each $t\in I$, the Fre…
We prove that all immersions of a genus one surface into G/T possessing a Toda frame can be constructed by integrating a pair of commuting vector fields on a finite dimensional Lie algebra. Here G is any simple real Lie group (not necessarily compact), T is a Cartan subgroup and the k-symmetric space structure on G/T is induced from the Coxeter automorphism. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a Toda frame for a harmonic map into G/T and describe those G/T to which the theory applies in terms of involutions of extended Dynkin diagrams.
We study variational systems for space curves, for which the Lagrangian or action principle has a Euclidean symmetry, using the Rotation Minimising frame, also known as the Normal, Parallel or Bishop frame. Such systems have previously been studied using the Frenet-Serret frame. The Rotation Minimising frame has many advantages, however, and can be used to study a wider class of examples. We achieve our results by extending the powerful symbolic invariant calculus for Lie group based moving frames, to the Rotation Minimising frame case. To date, the invariant calculus has been developed for fr…
We propose a Lie-theoretic definition of the tt*-Toda equations for any complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, based on the concept of topological-antitopological fusion which was introduced by Cecotti and Vafa. Our main result concerns the Stokes data of a certain meromorphic connection, whose isomonodromic deformations are controlled by these equations. Exploiting a framework introduced by Boalch, we show that this data has a remarkable structure, which can be described using Kostant's theory of Cartan subalgebras in apposition and Steinberg's theory of conjugacy classes of regular eleme…
