Leibniz Cohomology and the Calculus of Variations

In this paper we continue the investigation of Loday's Leibniz cohomology as a new invariant for differentiable manifolds. In particular the Leibniz coboundary of a k-tensor (in the sense of differential geometry) is computed in a local coordinate chart and then interpreted in terms of the calculus of variations. For example, the Leibniz coboundary of the metric two-tensor reduces to the first variation of arc length.

On Leibniz cohomology

In this paper we prove the Leibniz analogue of Whitehead's vanishing theorem for the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of Lie algebras. As a consequence, we obtain the second Whitehead lemma for Leibniz algebras. Moreover, we compute the cohomology of several Leibniz algebras with adjoint or irreducible coefficients. Our main tool is a Leibniz analogue of the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence, which is an extension of (the dual of) a spectral sequence of Pirashvili for Leibniz homology from symmetric bimodules to arbitrary bimodules.

Leibniz Cohomology with Adjoint Coefficients

With the Poincaré group $\mathbf{R}^{3,\,1}\rtimes O(3,\,1)$ as the model of departure, we focus, for $n=p+q$, $p+q\ge 4$, on the affine indefinite orthogonal group $\mathbf{R}^{p,q}\rtimes SO(p,\,q)$. Denote by $\mathfrak{h}_{p,\,q}$ the Lie algebra of the affine indefinite orthogonal group. We compute the Leibniz cohomology of $\mathfrak{h}_{p,\,q}$ with adjoint coefficients, written $HL^*(\mathfrak{h}_{p,\,q};\,\mathfrak{h}_{p,\,q})$. We calculate several indefinite orthogonal invariants, and $\mathfrak{h}_{p,\,q} $-invariants and provide the Leibniz cohomology in terms of these invariants.

Rigidity of Secondary Characteristic Classes

In this paper we study the variability and rigidity of secondary characteristic classes which arise from flat connections on a manifold. Considering the connection as a Lie-algebra valued one-form, we study the characteristic map from Lie algebra cohomology to de Rham cohomology of the manifold, and prove that if the Leibniz cohomology of the Lie algebra vanishes, then all secondary characteristic classes are rigid. Schubert calculus and cohomology of Lie groups. Part II. Compact Lie groups

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group with a maximal torus $T$. Based on a presentation of the integral cohomology ring $H^{\ast}(G/T)$ of the flag manifold $G/T$ in \cite{DZ1}we have presented in \cite{DZ2}an explicit and unified construction of the integral cohomology rings $H^{\ast}(G)$ for the $1$--connected Lie groups $G$. In this paper we extend this construction to all compact Lie groups.

Rational Pontryagin classes and functor calculus

It is known that in the integral cohomology of BSO(2m), the square of the Euler class is the same as the Pontryagin class in degree 4m. Given that the Pontryagin classes extend rationally to the cohomology of BSTOP(2m), it is reasonable to ask whether the same relation between the Euler class and the Pontryagin class in degree 4m is still valid in the rational cohomology of BSTOP(2m). In this paper we use smoothing theory and tools from homotopy theory to reformulate the hypothesis, and variants, in a differential topology setting and in a functor calculus setting.

Factorization homology and calculus à la Kontsevich Soibelman

Using factorization homology techniques, we give a simple proof of the action of Kontsevich and Soibelman operad on the pair consisting of Hochschild cohomology and Hochschild homology. The proof obviously extends to higher Hochschild cohomology and factorization (also called chiral) homology. Note that our result works in categories of chain complexes but also in categories of modules over a commutative ring spectrum.

Goresky-MacPherson calculus for the affine flag varieties

We use the fixed point arrangement technique developed by Goresky-MacPherson to calculate the part of the equivariant cohomology of the affine flag varieties generated by degree 2. This turns out to be a quadric cone. We also describe the spectrum of the full equivariant cohomology ring as an explicit geometric object. We use our results to show that the vertices of the moment map images of the affine flag varieties lie on a paraboloid.

Schubert calculus and the Hopf algebra structures of exceptional Lie groups

Let G be an exceptional Lie group with a maximal torus T. Based on common properties in the Schubert presentation of the cohomology ring H*(G/T;F_{p}) DZ1, and concrete expressions of generalized Weyl invariants for G over F_{p}, we obtain a unified approach to the structure of H*(G;F_{p}) as a Hopf algebra over the Steenrod algebra A_{p}. The results has been applied in Du2 to determine the near--Hopf ring structure on the integral cohomology of all exceptional Lie groups.

Khovanov homotopy calculations using flow category calculus

The Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy link invariant defines Steenrod squares on the Khovanov cohomology of a link. Lipshitz-Sarkar constructed an algorithm for computing the first two Steenrod squares. We develop a new algorithm which implements the flow category simplification techniques previously defined by the authors and Dan Jones. We give a purely combinatorial approach to calculating the second Steenrod square and Bockstein homomorphisms in Khovanov cohomology, and flow categories in general. Differential calculus of Hochschild pairs for infinity-categories

In this paper, we provide a conceptual new construction of the algebraic structure on the pair of the Hochschild cohomology spectrum (cochain complex) and Hochschild homology spectrum, which is analogous to the structure of calculus on a manifold. This algebraic structure is encoded by a two-colored operad introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman. We prove that for a stable idempotent-complete infinity-category, the pair of its Hochschild cohomology and homology spectra naturally admits the structure of algebra over the operad. Moreover, we prove a generalization to the equivariant context.

A positive Monk formula in the S^1-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties

Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. The elliptic Weyl character formula

We calculate equivariant elliptic cohomology of the partial flag variety G/H, where H \subseteq G are compact connected Lie groups of equal rank. We identify the RO(G)-graded coefficients Ell_G^* as powers of Looijenga's line bundle and prove that transfer along the map π: G/H -\rightarrow pt is calculated by the Weyl-Kac character formula.
