We characterize noncommutative Frobenius algebras A in terms of the existence of a coproduct which is a map of left A^e-modules. We show that the category of right (left) comodules over A, relative to this coproduct, is isomorphic to the category of right (left) modules. This isomorphism enables a reformulation of the cotensor product of Eilenberg and Moore as a functor of modules rather than comodules.
We prove that the cotensor product M \Box N of a right A-module M and a left A-module N is isomorphic to the vector space of homomorphisms from a particular left A^e-module D to N \otimes M, viewed as a left A^e-module. Some properties of D are described. Finally, we show that when A is a symmetric algebra, the cotensor product M \Box N and its derived functors are given by the Hochschild cohomology over A of N \otimes M.
Let C be a coalgebra over a field k and A its dual algebra. The category of C-comodules is equivalent to a category of A-modules. We use this to interpret the cotensor product M \square N of two comodules in terms of the appropriate Hochschild cohomology of the A-bimodule M \otimes N, when A is finite-dimensional, profinite, graded or differential-graded. The main applications are to Galois cohomology, comodules over the Steenrod algebra, and the homology of induced fibrations.
We investigate the question of how to compute the cotensor product, and more generally the derived cotensor (i.e., Cotor) groups, of a tensor product of comodules. In particular, we determine the conditions under which there is a Künneth formula for Cotor. We show that there is a simple Künneth theorem for Cotor groups if and only if an appropriate coefficient comodule has trivial coaction. This result is an application of a spectral sequence we construct for computing Cotor of a tensor product of comodules. Finally, for certain families of nontrivial comodules which are especially topological…
We compare several quasi-Frobenius-type properties for corings that appeared recently in literature and provide several new characterizations for each of these properties. By applying the theory of Galois comodules with a firm coinvariant ring, we can characterize a locally quasi-Frobenius (quasi-co-Frobenius) coring as a locally projective generator in its category of comodules.
In this article we defined and studied quasi-finite comodules, the cohom functors for coalgebras over rings. linear functors between categories of comodules are also investigated and it is proved that good enough linear functors are nothing but a cotensor functor. Our main result of this work characterizes equivalences between comodule categories generalizing the Morita-Takeuchi theory to coalgebras over rings. Morita-Takeuchi contexts in our setting is defined and investigated, a correspondence between strict Morita-Takeuchi contexts and equivalences of comodule categories over the involved c…
This note presents some results on projective modules and the Grothendieck groups K_0 and G_0 for Frobenius algebras and for certain Hopf Galois extensions. Our principal technical tools are the Higman trace for Frobenius algebras and a product formula for Hattori-Stallings ranks of projectives over Hopf Galois extensions.
Let H be a Hopf algebra and A an H-simple right H-comodule algebra. It is shown that under certain hypotheses every (H,A)-Hopf module is either projective or free as an A-module and A is either a quasi-Frobenius or a semisimple ring. As an application it is proved that every weakly finite (in particular, every finite dimensional) Hopf algebra is free both as a left and a right module over its finite dimensional right coideal subalgebras, and the latter are Frobenius algebras. Similar results are obtained for H-simple H-module algebras.
A pair of adjoint functors $(F,G)$ is called a Frobenius pair of the second type if $G$ is a left adjoint of $βFα$ for some category equivalences $α$ and $β$. Frobenius ring extensions of the second kind provide examples of Frobenius pairs of the second kind. We study Frobenius pairs of the second kind between categories of modules, comodules, and comodules over a coring. We also show that a finitely generated projective Hopf algebra over a commutative ring is always a Frobenius extension of the second kind, and prove that the integral spaces of the Hopf algebra and its dual are isomorphic.
Firm Frobenius algebras are firm algebras and counital coalgebras such that the comultiplication is a bimodule map. They are investigated by categorical methods based on a study of adjunctions and lifted functors. Their categories of comodules and of firm modules are shown to be isomorphic if and only if a canonical comparison functor from the category of comodules to the category of non-unital modules factorizes through the category of firm modules. This happens for example if the underlying algebra possesses local units, e.g. the firm Frobenius algebra arises from a co-Frobenius coalgebra ov…
We investigate Frobenius algebras and symmetric algebras in the monoidal category of right comodules over a Hopf algebra $H$; for the symmetric property $H$ is assumed to be cosovereign. If $H$ is finite dimensional and $A$ is an $H$-comodule algebra, we uncover the connection between $A$ and the smash product $A\# H^*$ with respect to the Frobenius and symmetric properties.
We investigate Frobenius pairs between categories of comodules over rather general corings. We particularize to the case of the adjoint pair of functors associated to a morphism of corings over different base rings, which leads to a reasonable notion of Frobenius coring extension. When applied to corings stemming from entwining structures, we obtain new results in this setting.
We consider Frobenius algebras in the monoidal category of right comodules over a Hopf algebra $H$. If $H$ is a group Hopf algebra, we study a more general Frobenius type property and uncover the structure of graded Frobenius algebras. Graded symmetric algebras are also investigated.

For a bialgebra $L$ coacting on a $\Bbbk$-algebra $A$, a classical result states that $A$ is a right $L$-comodule algebra if and only if $A$ is an algebra in the monoidal category $\mathcal{M}^{L}$ of right $L$-comodules; the former notion is formulaic while the latter is categorical. We generalize this result to the setting of weak bialgebras $H$. The category $\mathcal{M}^H$ admits a monoidal structure by work of Nill and Böhm-Caenepeel-Janssen, but the algebras in $\mathcal{M}^H$ are not canonically $\Bbbk$-algebras. Nevertheless, we prove that there is an isomorphism between the category o…
As shown by S. Eilenberg and J.C. Moore (1965), for a monad $F$ with right adjoint comonad $G$ on any catgeory $\mathbb{A}$, the category of unital $F$-modules $\mathbb{A}_F$ is isomorphic to the category of counital $G$-comodules $\mathbb{A}^G$. The monad $F$ is Frobenius provided we have $F=G$ and then $\mathbb{A}_F\simeq \mathbb{A}^F$. Here we investigate which kind of equivalences can be obtained for non-unital monads (and non-counital comonads).
We investigate left and right co-Frobenius coalgebras and give equivalent characterizations which prove statements dual to the characterizations of Frobenius algebras. We prove that a coalgebra is left and right co-Frobenius if and only if C is isomorphic to Rat(C*) as right C*-modules and also that this is eqhivalent to the fact that the functors Hom_K(-,K) and Hom_{C*}(-,C*) from the category of right C-comodules to the category of all left C*-modules are isomorphic. This allows a definition of a left-right symmetric concept of co-Frobenius coalgebras that is perfectly dual to the one of Fro…
We study the injective envelopes of the simple right $C$-comodules, and their duals, where $C$ is a coalgebra. This is used to give a short proof and to extend a result of Iovanov on the dimension of the space of integrals on coalgebras. We show that if $C$ is right co-Frobenius, then the dimension of the space of left $M$-integrals on $C$ is $\leq {\rm dim}M$ for any left $C$-comodule $M$ of finite support, and the dimension of the space of right $N$-integrals on $C$ is $\geq {\rm dim}N$ for any right $C$-comodule $N$ of finite support. If $C$ is a coalgebra, it is discussed how far is the du…
Given a ring $A$ and an $A$-coring $\cC$ we study when the forgetful functor from the category of right $\cC$-comodules to the category of right $A$-modules and its right adjoint $-\otimes_A\cC$ are separable. We then proceed to study when the induction functor $-\otimes_A\cC$ is also the left adjoint of the forgetful functor. This question is closely related to the problem when $A\to {}_A{\rm Hom}(\cC,A)$ is a Frobenius extension. We introduce the notion of a Galois coring and analyse when the tensor functor over the subring of $A$ fixed under the coaction of $\cC$ is an equivalence. We also …
A Hopf algebra is co-Frobenius when it has a nonzero integral. It is proved that the composition length of the indecomposable injective comodules over a co-Frobenius Hopf algebra is bounded. As a consequence, the coradical filtration of a co-Frobenius Hopf algebra is finite; this confirms a conjecture by Sorin Dăscălescu and the first author. The proof is of categorical nature and the same result is obtained for Frobenius tensor categories of subexponential growth. A family of co-Frobenius Hopf algebras that are not of finite type over their Hopf socles is constructed, answering so in the nega…
We define comodule algebras and Galois extensions for actions of bialgebroids. Using just module conditions we characterize the Frobenius extensions that are Galois as depth two and right balanced extensions. As a corollary, we obtain characterizations of certain weak and ordinary Hopf-Galois extensions without reference to action in the hypothesis.
We study Galois extensions Coinv(M)<M for M an H-comodule algebra and H a Frobenius Hopf algebroid. We obtain generalizations of various theorems in Hopf-Galois theory by Kreimer-Takeuchi, Doi-Takeuchi and Cohen-Fischman-Montgomery. An algebra extension is Galois precisely if it is balanced, depth 2, and Frobenius. Then we show that Yetter-Drinfeld categories over H are always braided and their braided commutative algebras play the role of noncommutative scalar extensions by the Brzezinski-Militaru Theorem. Contravariant "fiber functors" are used to prove an analogue of Ulbrich's Theorem and t…
Let $R$, $S$ be two rings, $C$ an $R$-coring and ${}_{R}^C{\mathcal M}$ the category of left $C$-comodules. The category ${\bf Rep}\, ( {}_{R}^C{\mathcal M}, {}_{S}{\mathcal M} )$ of all representable functors ${}_{R}^C{\mathcal M} \to {}_{S}{\mathcal M}$ is shown to be equivalent to the opposite of the category ${}_{R}^C{\mathcal M}_S$. For $U$ an $(S,R)$-bimodule we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the induction functor $U\otimes_R - : {}_{R}^C\mathcal{M} \to {}_{S}\mathcal{M}$ to be: a representable functor, an equivalence of categories, a separable or a Frobenius functor. The l…
For a ring $R$, the properties of being (left) selfinjective or being cogenerator for the left $R$-modules do not imply one another, and the two combined give rise to the important notion of PF-rings. For a coalgebra $C$, (left) self-projectivity implies that $C$ is generator for right comodules and the coalgebras with this property were called right quasi-co-Frobenius; however, whether the converse implication is true is an open question. We provide an extensive study of this problem. We show that this implication does not hold, by giving a large class of examples of coalgebras having the "ge…
We generalize the results on existence and uniqueness of integrals from compact groups and Hopf algebras in a pure (co)algebraic setting, and find a series of new results on (quasi)-co-Frobenius and semiperfect coalgebras. For a coalgebra $C$, we introduce the generalized space of integrals $\int_M=\Hom^C(C,M)$ associated to a right $C$-comodule $M$ and study connections between "uniqueness of integrals" $\dim(\int_M)\leq \dim(M)$ and "existence of integrals" $\dim(\int_M)\geq \dim(M)$ for all $M$ and representation theoretic properties of $C$: (quasi)-co-Frobenius, semiperfect. We show that a…
