Let N be a regular branched cover of a homology 3-sphere M with deck group G isomorphic to Z_2^d and branch set a trivalent graph Gamma; such a cover is determined by a coloring of the edges of Gamma with elements of G. For each index-2 subgroup H of G, M_H = N/H is a double branched cover of M. Sakuma has proved that the first homology of N is isomorphic, modulo 2-torsion, to the direct sum of the first homology groups of the M_H, and has shown that H_1(N) is determined up to isomorphism by the direct sum of the H_1(M_H) in certain cases; specifically, when d=2 and the coloring is such that the branch set of each cover M_H -> M is connected, and when d=3 and Gamma is the complete graph K_4. We prove this for a larger class of coverings: when d=2, for any coloring of a connected graph; when d=3 or 4, for an infinite class of colored graphs; and when d=5, for a single coloring of the Petersen graph.
In this paper we introduce a representation of a embedded knotted (sometimes Lagrangian) tori in $\BR^4$ called a hypercube diagram, i.e., a 4-dimensional cube diagram. We prove the existence of hypercube homology that is invariant under 4-dimensional cube diagram moves, a homology that is based on knot Floer homology. We provide examples of hypercube diagrams and hypercube homology, including using the new invariant to distinguish (up to cube moves) two "Hopf linked" tori. We also give examples of a "Trefoil" torus and an immersed knotted torus that is an amalgamation of the $5_2$ knot and a …
Meier and Zupan showed that every surface in the four-sphere admits a bridge trisection and can therefore be represented by three simple tangles. This raises the possibility of applying methods from link homology to knotted surfaces. We use link homology to construct an invariant of knotted surfaces (up to isotopy) which distinguishes the unknotted sphere from certain knotted spheres. We also construct an invariant of a bridge-trisected surface in the the form of an $A_\infty$-algebra. Both invariants are defined by a novel connection between $A_\infty$-algebras and Manolescu and Ozsváth's hyp…
We define homology of ternary algebras satisfying axioms derived from particle scattering or, equivalently, from the third Reidemeister move. We show that ternary quasigroups satisfying these axioms appear naturally in invariants of Reidemeister, Yoshikawa, and Roseman moves. Our homology has a degenerate subcomplex. The normalized homology yields invariants of knots and knotted surfaces.
In this paper we show that there exist simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds which contain infinitely many knotted lagrangian tori, i.e. lagrangian embeddings of tori that are homotopic but not isotopic. Moreover, the homology class they represent can be assumed to be nontrivial and primitive. This answers a question of Eliashberg and Polterovich.
Let L be a link in a thickened annulus. We show that its sutured annular Khovanov homology carries an action of the exterior current algebra of the Lie algebra sl_2. When L is an m-framed n-cable of a knot K in the three-sphere, its sutured annular Khovanov homology carries a commuting action of the symmetric group S_n. One therefore obtains a "knotted" Schur-Weyl representation that agrees with classical sl_2 Schur-Weyl duality when K is the Seifert-framed unknot.
Quantification and classification of protein structures, such as knotted proteins, often requires noise-free and complete data. Here we develop a mathematical pipeline that systematically analyzes protein structures. We showcase this geometric framework on proteins forming open-ended trefoil knots, and we demonstrate that the mathematical tool, persistent homology, faithfully represents their structural homology. This topological pipeline identifies important geometric features of protein entanglement and clusters the space of trefoil proteins according to their depth. Persistence landscapes q…
We inductively define layers of colorings of knot and knotted surface diagrams using ternary quasigroups. Homological invariants from such systems of colorings use shorter differentials and of higher degree than the standard homology differentials, and give access to typically more complex homology groups.
A qualgebra $G$ is a set having two binary operations that satisfy compatibility conditions which are modeled upon a group under conjugation and multiplication. We develop a homology theory for qualgebras and describe a classifying space for it. This space is constructed from $G$-colored prisms (products of simplices) and simultaneously generalizes (and includes) simplicial classifying spaces for groups and cubical classifying spaces for quandles. Degenerate cells of several types are added to the regular prismatic cells; by duality, these correspond to "non-rigid" Reidemeister moves and their…
We give an upper bound for the growth of homology torsions of finite coverings of irreducible 3-manifolds with tori boundary in terms of hyperbolic volume.
Using the covering involution on the double branched cover of the three-sphere branched along a knot, and adapting ideas of Hendricks-Manolescu and Hendricks-Hom-Lidman, we define new knot invariants and apply them to deduce novel linear independence results in the smooth concordance group of knots.
We provide related Dehn surgery descriptions for rational homology spheres and a class of their regular finite cyclic covering spaces. As an application, we use the surgery descriptions to relate the Casson invariants of the covering spaces to that of the base space. Finally, we show that this places restrictions on the number of finite and cyclic Dehn fillings of the knot complements in the covering spaces beyone those imposed by Culler-Gordon-Luecke-Shalen and Boyer-Zhang.
We prove a Smith-type inequality for regular covering spaces in monopole Floer homology. Using the monopole Floer / Heegaard Floer correspondence, we deduce that if a 3-manifold Y admits a p^n-sheeted regular cover that is a Z/pZ-L-space (for p prime), then Y is a Z/pZ-L-space. Further, we obtain constraints on surgeries on a knot being regular covers over other surgeries on the same knot, and over surgeries on other knots.
The theory of signature invariants of links in rational homology spheres is applied to covering links of homology boundary links. From patterns and Seifert matrices of homology boundary links, an explicit formula is derived to compute signature invariants of their covering links. Using the formula, we produce fused boundary links that are positive mutants of ribbon links but are not concordant to boundary links. We also show that for any finite collection of patterns, there are homology boundary links that are not concordant to any homology boundary links admitting a pattern in the collection.
We give a construction of quandle cocycles from group cocycles, especially, for any integer p \geq 3, quandle cocycles of the dihedral quandle R_p from group cocycles of the cyclic group Z/p. We will show that a group 3-cocycle of Z/p gives rise to a non-trivial quandle 3-cocycle of R_p. When p is an odd prime, since dim_{F_p} H_Q^3(R_p; F_p) = 1, our 3-cocycle is a constant multiple of the Mochizuki 3-cocycle up to coboundary. Dually, we construct a group cycle represented by a cyclic branched covering branched along a knot K from the quandle cycle associated with a colored diagram of K.
Heegaard Floer homology, first introduced by P. Ozsvath and Z. Szabo, associates to a 3-manifold Y a family of relatively graded Abelian groups HF(Y,t), indexed by Spin^c structures t on Y. In the case that Y is a rational homology sphere, Ozsvath and Szabo lift the relative Z-grading to an absolute Q-grading. This induces a relative Q-grading on \bigoplus_{t\in Spin^c(Y)} HF(Y,t). In this paper we describe an alternate construction of this relative Q-grading by studying the Heegaard Floer homology of covering spaces.
We construct a covering of Culler-Vogtmann Outer space by the Teichmuller spaces of punctured surfaces. By considering the equivariant homology for the action of Out(F_n) on this covering, we construct a spectral sequence converging to the homology of Out(F_n) that has E^1 terms given by the homology of mapping class groups and groups that are, up to finite index, subgroups of mapping class groups. This spectral sequence can be seen as encoding all of the information of how the homology of Out(F_n) is related to the homology of mapping class groups and their subgroups.
Techniques for constructing codimension 2 embeddings and immersions of the 2 and 3-fold branched covers of the 3 and 4-dimensional spheres are presented. These covers are in braided form, and it is in this sense that they are folded. More precisely the composition of the embedding (or immersion) and the canonical projection induces the branched covering map. In the case of the 3-sphere, the branch locus is a knotted or linked curve in space, the 2-fold branched cover always embeds, and the 3-fold branch cover might be immersed. In the case of the 4-sphere, the branch locus is a knotted or link…
A strategy for constructing an embedded sphere in a 4-manifold realizing a given homology class which has been successfully applied in the past is to represent the class as a first step stably by an embedded sphere, i.e. after adding products of 2-spheres, and to move that sphere back into the original manifold. In this paper, we study under what conditions the first step of this approach can be carried out if the 4-manifold at hand is not simply connected. One of our main results is that there are - apart from the well known Arf invariant - additional bordism theoretical obstructions to stabl…
This article establishes the algebraic covering theory of quandles. For every connected quandle we explicitly construct a universal covering, which in turn leads us to define the algebraic fundamental group as the automorphism group of the universal covering. We then establish the Galois correspondence between connected coverings and subgroups of the fundamental group. Quandle coverings are thus formally analogous to coverings of topological spaces, and resemble Kervaire's algebraic covering theory of perfect groups. A detailed investigation also reveals some crucial differences, which we illu…
A quandle is a set that has a binary operation satisfying three conditions corresponding to the Reidemeister moves. Homology theories of quandles have been developed in a way similar to group homology, and have been applied to knots and knotted surfaces. In this paper, a homology theory is defined that unifies group and quandle homology theories. A quandle that is a union of groups with the operation restricting to conjugation on each group component is called a multiple conjugation quandle (MCQ, defined rigorously within). In this definition, compatibilities between the group and quandle oper…
For a knot $K$ in a homology $3$-sphere $Σ$, let $M$ be the result of $2/q$-surgery on $K$, and let $X$ be the universal abelian covering of $M$. Our first theorem is that if the first homology of $X$ is finite cyclic and $M$ is a Seifert fibered space with $N\ge 3$ singular fibers, then $N\ge 4$ if and only if the first homology of the universal abelian covering of $X$ is infinite. Our second theorem is that under an appropriate assumption on the Alexander polynomial of $K$, if $M$ is a Seifert fibered space, then $q=\pm 1$ (i.e.\ integral surgery).
We prove that the mod $2$ Betti numbers of double coverings of a complex hyperplane arrangement complement are combinatorially determined. The proof is based on a relation between the mod $2$ Aomoto complex and the transfer long exact sequence. Applying the above result to the icosidodecahedral arrangement ($16$ planes in the three dimensional space related to the icosidodecahedron), we conclude that the first homology of the Milnor fiber has non-trivial $2$-torsion.
We study the growth of the order of torsion subgroups of the homology in a tower of finite abelian coverings. In particular, we prove that it is exponential for when the tower converges to the maximal free abelian cover of a link complement when the first nonzero Alexander polynomial has positive logarithmic Mahler measure.
We show that standard cyclic actions on Brieskorn homology 3-spheres with non-empty fixed set do not extend smoothly to any contractible smooth 4-manifold it may bound. The quotient of any such extension would be an acyclic $4$-manifold with boundary a related Brieskorn homology sphere. We briefly discuss well known invariants of homology spheres that obstruct acyclic bounding 4-manifolds, and then use a method based on equivariant Yang-Mills moduli spaces to rule out extensions of the actions.
Given a finite covering of graphs $f : Y \to X$, it is not always the case that $H_1(Y;\mathbb{C})$ is spanned by lifts of primitive elements of $π_1(X)$. In this paper, we study graphs for which this is not the case, and we give here the simplest known nontrivial examples of covers with this property, with covering degree as small as 128. Our first step is focusing our attention on the special class of graph covers where the deck group is a finite $p$-group. For such covers, there is a representation-theoretic criterion for identifying deck groups for which there exist covers with the propert…
This article introduces planar shape signatures derived from homology nerves, which are intersecting 1-cycles in a collection of homology groups endowed with a proximal relator (set of nearness relations) that includes a descriptive proximity. A 1-cycle is a closed, connected path with a zero boundary in a simplicial complex covering a finite, bounded planar shape. The signature of a shape sh A (denoted by sig(sh A)) is a feature vector that describes sh A. A signature sig(sh A) is derived from the geometry, homology nerves, Betti number, and descriptive CW topology on the shape sh A. Several …
We discuss 3-manifolds which are cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere, branched over 2-bridge knots and links. Different descriptions of these manifolds are presented: polyhedral, Heegaard diagram, Dehn surgery and coloured graph constructions. Using these descriptions, we give presentations for their fundamental groups, which are cyclic presentations in the case of 2-bridge knots. The homology groups are given for a wide class of cases. Moreover, we prove that each singly-cyclic branched covering of a 2-bridge link is the composition of a meridian-cyclic branched covering of a determined link and…
We establish new strong lower bounds on the (subnormal) subgroup growth of a large class of groups. This includes the fundamental groups of all finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds and all (free non-abelian)-by-cyclic groups. The lower bound is nearly exponential, which should be compared with the fastest possible subgroup growth of any finitely generated group. This is achieved by free non-abelian groups and is slightly faster than exponential. As a consequence, we obtain good estimates on the number of covering spaces of a hyperbolic 3-manifold with given covering degree. We also obtain slig…
Let $f: X \to Y$ be a regular covering of a surface $Y$ of finite type with nonempty boundary, with finitely-generated (possibly infinite) deck group $G$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an integral homology class on $X$ to admit a representative as a connected component of the preimage of a nonseparating simple closed curve on $Y$, possibly after passing to a "stabilization", i.e. a $G$-equivariant embedding of covering spaces $X \hookrightarrow X^+$.
We show that the regulator, which is the difference between the homology torsion and the combinatorial Ray-Singer torsion, of fnite abelian coverings of a fixed complex has sub-exponential growth rate.
We classify compact oriented $5$-manifolds with free fundamental group and $π_{2}$ a torsion free abelian group in terms of the second homotopy group considered as $π_1$-module, the cup product on the second cohomology of the universal covering, and the second Stiefel-Whitney class of the universal covering. We apply this to the classification of simple boundary links of $3$-spheres in $S^5$. Using this we give a complete algebraic picture of closed $5$-manifolds with free fundamental group and trivial second homology group.
For a commutative ring $R$ with a unit, an $R$-homology rose is a topological space whose homology groups with $R$-coefficients agree with those of a bouquet of cirlces. In this paper, we study some special properties of covering spaces and fundamental groups of $R$-homology roses, from which we obtain some result supporting the Carlsson conjecture on free $(Z_p)^r$ actions. In addition, for a group $G$ and a field $F$, we define an integer called the $F$-gap of $G$, which is an obstruction for $G$ to be realized as the fundamental group of a 2-dimensional $F$-homology rose. Furthermore, we di…
Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $Σ$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $Σ$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $Σ$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $η$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori…
We construct branched double coverings by certain direct products of manifolds for connected sums of copies of sphere bundles over the 2-sphere. As an application we answer a question of Kotschick and Loeh up to dimension five. More precisely, we show that: (1) every simply connected, closed four-manifold admits a branched double covering by a product of the circle with a connected sum of copies of $S^2 \times S^1$, followed by a collapsing map; (2) every simply connected, closed five-manifold admits a branched double covering by a product of the circle with a connected sum of copies of $S^3 \…
Let O be a compact orientable 3-orbifold with non-empty singular locus and a finite volume hyperbolic structure. (Equivalently, O is the quotient of hyperbolic 3-space by a lattice in PSL(2,C) with torsion.) Then we prove that O has a tower of finite-sheeted covers {O_i} with linear growth of p-homology, for some prime p. This means that the dimension of the first homology, with mod p coefficients, of the fundamental group of O_i grows linearly in the covering degree. The proof combines techniques from 3-manifold theory with group-theoretic methods, including the Golod-Shafarevich inequality a…
A three-dimensional orbifold $(Σ, γ_i, n_i)$, where $Σ$ is a rational homology sphere, has a universal abelian orbifold covering, whose covering group is the first orbifold homology. A singular pair $(X,C)$, where $X$ is a normal surface singularity with $\mathbb Q$HS link and $C$ is a Weil divisor, gives rise on its boundary to an orbifold. One studies the preceding orbifold notions in the algebro-geometric setting, in particular defining the universal abelian log cover of a pair. A first key theorem computes the orbifold homology from an appropriate resolution of the pair. In analogy with th…
We consider the universal family $E_n^d$ of superelliptic curves: each curve $Σ_n^d$ in the family is a $d$-fold covering of the unit disk, totally ramified over a set $P$ of $n$ distinct points; $Σ_n^d\hookrightarrow E_n^d\to C_n$ is a fibre bundle, where $C_n$ is the configuration space of $n$ distinct points. We find that $E_n^d$ is the classifying space for the complex braid group of type $B(d,d,n)$ and we compute a big part of the integral homology of $E_n^d,$ including a complete calculation of the stable groups over finite fields by means of Poincarè series. The computation of the main …
In this paper we use fractal geometry to investigate boundary aspects of the first homology group for finite coverings of the modular surface. We obtain a complete description of algebraically invisible parts of this homology group. More precisely, we first show that for any modular subgroup the geodesic forward dynamic on the associated surface admits a canonical symbolic representation by a finitely irreducible shift space. We then use this representation to derive an `almost complete' multifractal description of the higher--dimensional level sets arising from Manin--Marcolli's limiting modu…
