We define motivic analogues of Igusa's local zeta functions. These functions take their values in a Grothendieck group of Chow motives. They specialize to p-adic Igusa local zeta functions and to the topological zeta functions we introduced several years ago. We study their basic properties, such as functional equations, and their relation with motivic nearby cycles. In particular the Hodge spectrum of a singular point of a function may be recovered from the Hodge realization of these zeta functions.
In this article, we compute the motivic Igusa zeta function of a space monomial curve that appears as the special fiber of an equisingular family whose generic fiber is a complex plane branch. To this end, we determine the irreducible components of the jet schemes of such a space monomial curve. This approach does not only yield a closed formula for the motivic zeta function, but also allows to determine its poles. We show that, while the family of the jet schemes of the fibers is not flat, the number of poles of the motivic zeta function associated with the space monomial curve is equal to th…
In this paper, we prove the rationality of Igusa's local zeta functions of semiquasihomogeneous polynomials with coefficients in a non-archimedean local field K. The proof of this result is based on Igusa's stationary phase formula and some ideas on Neron p-desingularization.
We explain the proof, obtained in collaboration with Chenyang Xu, of a 1999 conjecture of Veys about poles of maximal order of Igusa zeta functions. The proof technique is based on the Minimal Model Program in birational geometry, but the proof was heavily inspired by ideas coming from non-archimedean geometry and mirror symmetry; we will outline these relations at the end of the paper. This text is intended to be a low-tech introduction to these topics; we only assume that the reader has a basic knowledge of algebraic geometry.
In 2011 Lemahieu and Van Proeyen proved the Monodromy Conjecture for the local topological zeta function of a non-degenerated surface singularity. We start from their work and obtain the same result for Igusa's p-adic and the motivic zeta function. In the p-adic case, this is, for a polynomial f in Z[x,y,z] satisfying f(0,0,0)=0 and non-degenerated with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we show that every pole of the local p-adic zeta function of f induces an eigenvalue of the local monodromy of f at some point of the complex zero locus of f close to the origin. Essentially the entire paper is…
We show that coefficients in the Laurent series of Igusa Zeta functions are periods. This will be used in a subsequent paper (by P. Brosnan) to show that certain numbers occurring in study of Feynman amplitudes (upto gamma factors) are periods.
The numerical data of an embedded resolution determine the candidate poles of Igusa's p-adic zeta function. We determine in complete generality which real candidate poles are actual poles in the curve case.
The aim of this paper is to describe explicitly the poles of the meromorphic continuation of the Igusa local zeta function associated to several polynomials. Using resolution of singularities is possible to express the Igusa's local zeta function as a finite sum of p-adic monomial integrals. We compute these monomial integrals using techniques of toroidal geometry. In this way, we obtain an explicit list for the candidates to poles of the local zeta function associated to several polynomials.
We show that the real parts of the poles of the Igusa zeta function of a monomial ideal can be computed from the torus-invariant divisors on the normalized blowing-up along the ideal. Moreover, we show that every such number is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial associated to the monomial ideal.
We collect some properties of the motivic zeta functions and the motivic nearby fiber defined by Denef and Loeser. In particular, we calculate the relative dual of the motivic nearby fiber. We give a candidate for a nearby cycle morphism on the level of Grothendieck groups of varieties using the motivic nearby fiber.
We define a divisorial motivic zeta function for stable curves with marked points which agrees with Kapranov's motivic zeta function when the curve is smooth and unmarked. We show that this zeta function is rational, and give a formula in terms of the dual graph of the curve.
We lift the splicing formula of Némethi and Veys, which deals with polynomials in two variables, to the motivic level. After defining the motivic zeta function and the monodromic motivic zeta function with respect to a differential form, we prove a splicing formula for them, which specializes to this formula of Némethi and Veys. We also show that we cannot introduce a monodromic motivic zeta functions in terms of a (splice) diagram since it does not contain all the necessary information. In the last part we discuss the generalized monodromy conjecture of Némethi and Veys. The statement also ho…
Combining the idea of motivic zeta function, due to Kapranov, and Pellikaan's definition of a two- variable zeta function for curves over finite fields in the present note we introduce a motivic two- variable zeta function for curves over arbitrary fields and prove the generalizations of Pellikaan's results in this context.
Let (X,L) be a polarized manifold. Assume that the automorphism group is finite. If the height discrepancy of (X,L) is O(d^2) then (X,L) admits a csck metric in the first chern class of L if and only if (X,L) is asymptotically stable.
We study endomorphisms of complete Noetherian local rings in the context of motivic integration. Using the notion of an auto-arc space, we introduce the (reduced) auto-Igusa zeta series at a point, which appears to measure the degree to which a variety is not smooth that point. We conjecture a closed formula in the case of curves with one singular point, and we provide explicit formulas for this series in the case of the cusp and the node. Using the work of Denef and Loeser, one can show that this series will often be rational. These ideas were obtained through extensive calculations in Sage. …
We study the behaviour of motivic zeta functions of prehomogeneous vector spaces under castling transformations. In particular we deduce how the motivic Milnor fibre and the Hodge spectrum at the origin behave under such transformations.
We introduce a new notion of $\boxast$-product of two integrable series with coefficients in distinct Grothendieck rings of algebraic varieties, preserving the integrability and commuting with the limit of rational series. In the same context, we define a motivic multiple zeta function with respect to an ordered family of regular functions, which is integrable and connects closely to Denef-Loeser's motivic zeta functions. We also show that the $\boxast$-product is associative in the class of motivic multiple zeta functions. Furthermore, a version of the Euler reflexion formula for motivic zeta…
Let $f$ be a germ of complex analytic function at $({\mathbf{C}}^{d+1}, 0)$ such that its zero level defines an irreducible germ of quasi-ordinary hypersurface $(S,0)$. We describe the motivic Igusa zeta function, the motivic Milnor fibre and the Hodge-Steenbrink spectrum of $f$ at 0 in terms of topological invariants of the quasi-ordinary hypersurface $(S,0)$.
For a formal scheme over a complete discrete valuation ring with a good action of a finite group, we define equivariant motivic integration, and we prove a change of variable formula for that.To do so, we construct and examine an induced group action on the Greenberg scheme of such a formal scheme. Using this equivariant motivic integration, we define an equivariant volume Poincaré series, from which we deduce Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function including the action of the profinite group of roots of unity.
Let K be a p-adic field. We explore Igusa's p-adic zeta function, which is associated to a K-analytic function on an open and compact subset of K^n. First we deduce a formula for an important coefficient in the Laurent series of this meromorphic function at a candidate pole. Afterwards we use this formula to determine all values less than -1/2 for n=2 and less than -1 for n=3 which occur as the real part of a pole.
In arXiv:1408.4708, Xu defines the dlt motivic zeta function associated to a regular function $f$ on a smooth variety $X$ over a field of characteristic zero. This is an adaptation of the classical motivic zeta function that was introduced by Denef and Loeser. The dlt motivic zeta function is defined on a dlt modification via a Denef-Loeser-type formula, replacing classes of strata in the Grothendieck ring of varieties by stringy motives. We provide explicit examples that show that the dlt motivic zeta function depends on the choice of dlt modification, contrary to what is claimed in arXiv:140…
This is a survey on motivic zeta functions associated to abelian varieties and Calabi-Yau varieties over a discretely valued field. We explain how they are related to Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function associated to a complex hypersurface singularity and we investigate the relation between the poles of the zeta function and the eigenvalues of the monodromy action on the tame $\ell$-adic cohomology of the variety. The motivic zeta function allows to generalize many interesting arithmetic invariants from abelian varieties to Calabi-Yau varieties and to compute them explicitly on a model wi…
The motivic Hilbert zeta function of a variety is the generating function for classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of Hilbert schemes of points of the variety. In this paper, the motivic Hilbert zeta function of a reduced curve is shown to be rational.
We elaborate notions of integration over the space of arcs factorized by the natural $C^*$-action and over the space of non-parametrized arcs (branches). There are offered two motivic versions of the zeta function of the classical monodromy transformation of a germ of an analytic function on a smooth space. We indicate a direct formula which connects the naive motivic zeta function of J. Denef and F. Loeser with the classical monodromy zeta function.
We use a formula of Bultot to compute the motivic zeta function for the toric degeneration of the quartic K3 and its Gross-Siebert mirror dual degeneration. We check for this explicit example that the identification of the logarithm of the monodromy and the mirror dual Lefschetz operator works at an integral level.
The zeta-function of a complex variety is a power series whose nth coefficient is the nth symmetric power of the variety, viewed as an element in the Grothendieck ring of complex varieties. We prove that the zeta-function of a surface is rational if and only if its Kodaira dimension is negative.
A motivic height zeta function associated to a family of varieties parametrised by a curve is the generating series of the classes, in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, of moduli spaces of sections of this family with varying degrees. This text is devoted to the study of the motivic height zeta function associated to a family of varieties with generic fiber having the structure of an equivariant compactification of a vector group. Our main theorem describes the convergence of this motivic height zeta function with respect to a topology on the Grothendieck ring of varieties coming from the th…
We give an explicit formula for the motivic zeta function in terms of a log smooth model. It generalizes the classical formulas for snc-models, but it gives rise to much fewer candidate poles, in general. As an illustration, we explain how the formula for Newton non-degenerate polynomials can be viewed as a special case of our results.
For each central essential hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ over an algebraically closed field, let $Z_\mathcal{A}^{\hatμ}(T)$ denote the Denef-Loeser motivic zeta function of $\mathcal{A}$. We prove a formula expressing $Z_\mathcal{A}^{\hatμ}(T)$ in terms of the Milnor fibers of related hyperplane arrangements. We use this formula to show that the map taking each complex arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ to the Hodge-Deligne specialization of $Z_{\mathcal{A}}^{\hatμ}(T)$ is locally constant on the realization space of any loop-free matroid. We also prove a combinatorial formula expressing the mot…
We study motivic zeta functions of degenerating families of Calabi-Yau varieties. Our main result says that they satisfy an analog of Igusa's monodromy conjecture if the family has a so-called Galois-equivariant Kulikov model; we provide several classes of examples where this condition is verified. We also establish a close relation between the zeta function and the skeleton that appeared in Kontsevich and Soibelman's non-archimedean interpretation of the SYZ conjecture in mirror symmetry.
Let f be a regular function on a nonsingular complex algebraic variety of dimension d. We prove a formula for the motivic zeta function of f in terms of an embedded resolution. This formula is over the Grothendieck ring itself, and specializes to the formula of Denef and Loeser over a certain localization. We also show that the space of n-jets satisfying f=0 can be partitioned into locally closed subsets which are isomorphic to a cartesian product of some variety with an affine space of dimension the round up of dn/2. Finally, we look at the consequences for the poles of the motivic zeta funct…
We prove that if $X$ is a smooth projective variety of dimension greater than 1 over a field $K$ of characteristic zero such that $\operatorname{Pic}(X_{\bar{K}}) = \mathbb{Z}$ and $X_{\bar{K}}$ is simply connected, then the natural map $ρ: \operatorname{Aut}(X) \to \operatorname{Aut}(\operatorname{Sym}^d(X))$ is an isomorphism for every $d > 0$. We also partially compute the motivic zeta function of a Severi-Brauer surface and explain some relations between the classes of Severi-Brauer varieties in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.
Let $K_0(\mathrm{Var}_{\mathbb{Q}})[1/\mathbb{L}]$ denote the Grothendieck ring of $\mathbb{Q}$-varieties with the Lefschetz class inverted. We show that there exists a K3 surface X over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that the motivic zeta function $ζ_X(t) := \sum_n [\mathrm{Sym}^n X]t^n$ regarded as an element in $K_0(\mathrm{Var}_{\mathbb{Q}})[1/\mathbb{L}][[t]]$ is not a rational function in $t$, thus disproving a conjecture of Denef and Loeser.
Let X be a nonsingular algebraic variety in characteristic zero. To an effective divisor on X Kontsevich has associated a certain 'motivic integral', living in a completion of the Grothendieck ring of algebraic varieties. He used this invariant to show that birational Calabi-Yau varieties have the same Hodge numbers. Then Denef and Loeser introduced the motivic (Igusa) zeta function, associated to a regular function on X, which specializes to both the classical p-adic Igusa zeta function and the topological zeta function, and also to Kontsevich's invariant. This paper treats a generalization t…
For p prime, we give an explicit formula for Igusa's local zeta function associated to a polynomial mapping f=(f_1,...,f_t): Q_p^n -> Q_p^t, with f_1,...,f_t in Z_p[x_1,...,x_n], and an integration measure on Z_p^n of the form |g(x)||dx|, with g another polynomial in Z_p[x_1,...,x_n]. We treat the special cases of a single polynomial and a monomial ideal separately. The formula is in terms of Newton polyhedra and will be valid for f and g sufficiently non-degenerated over F_p with respect to their Newton polyhedra. The formula is based on, and is a generalization of results of Denef - Hoornaer…
Let I be an arbitrary ideal in C[[x,y]]. We use the Newton algorithm to compute by induction the motivic zeta function of the ideal, yielding only few poles, associated to the faces of the successive Newton polygons. We associate a minimal Newton tree to I, related to using good coordinates in the Newton algorithm, and show that it has a conceptual geometric interpretation in terms of the log canonical model of I. We also compute the log canonical threshold from a Newton polygon and strengthen Corti's inequalities.
Let $\mathfrak{Var}_k^G$ denote the category of pairs $(X,σ)$, where $X$ is a variety over $k$ and $σ$ is a group action on $X$. We define the Grothendieck ring for varieties with group actions as the free abelian group of isomorphism classes in the category $\mathfrak{Var}_k^G$ modulo a cutting and pasting relation. The multiplication in this ring is defined by the fiber product of varieties. This allows for motivic zeta-functions for varieties with group actions to be defined. This is a formal power series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}[\text{Sym}^n (X,σ)]t^n$ with coefficients in the Grothendieck rin…
We prove a 1999 conjecture of Veys, which says that the opposite of the log canonical threshold is the only possible pole of maximal order of Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function associated with a germ of a regular function on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic zero. We apply similar methods to study the weight function on the Berkovich skeleton associated with a degeneration of Calabi-Yau varieties. Our results suggest that the weight function induces a flow on the non-archimedean analytification of the degeneration towards the Kontsevich-Soibelman skeleton.
We study the twisted local zeta function associated to a polynomial in two variables with coefficients in a non-Archimedean local field of arbitrary characteristic. Under the hypothesis that the polynomial is arithmetically non degenerate, we obtain an explicit list of candidates for the poles in terms of geometric data obtained from a family of arithmetic Newton polygons attached to the polynomial. The notion of arithmetical non degeneracy due to Saia and Zúñiga-Galindo is weaker than the usual notion of non degeneracy due to Kouchnirenko. As an application we obtain asymptotic expansions for…
If k is a field of characteristic 0, we prove that the motivic Poincare serie and the motivic Zeta functions associated to a k[[t]]-variety, flat and purely dimensional, are rational.
Let $f$ be a polynomial in $n$ variables over some number field and $Z$ a subscheme of affine $n$-space. The notion of motivic oscillation index of $f$ at $Z$ was initiated by Cluckers (2008) and Cluckers-Mustaţǎ-Nguyen (2019). In this paper we elaborate on this notion and raise several questions. The first one is stability under base field extension; this question is linked to a deep understanding of the density of non-archimedean local fields over which Igusa's local zeta functions of $f$ has a pole with given real part. The second one is around Igusa's conjecture for exponential sums with b…
Let K be a field of characteristic 0 and A be a rigid tensor K-linear category. Let M be a finite-dimensional object of A in the sense of Kimura-O'Sullivan. We prove that the "motivic" zeta function of M with coefficients in K\_0(A) has a functional equation. When A is the category of Chow motives over a field, we thus recover and generalise previous work of Franziska Heinloth, who considered the case where M is the motive of an abelian variety. We also get a functional equation for the zeta function of any motive modulo homological equivalence over a finite field. Our functional equation invo…
Let K be a p-adic field, R the valuation ring of K, P the maximal ideal of R and q the cardinality of the residue field R/P. Let f be a polynomial over R in n>1 variables and let χbe a character of R^{\times}. Let M_i(u) be the number of solutions of f=u in (R/P^i)^n for i \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0} and u \in R/P^i. These numbers are related with Igusa's p-adic zeta function Z_{f,χ}(s) of f. We explain the connection between the M_i(u) and the smallest real part of a pole of Z_{f,χ}(s). We also prove that M_i(u) is divisible by q^{\ulcorner(n/2)(i-1)\urcorner}, where the corners indicate that we …
It oftens occurs that Taylor coefficients of (dimensionally regularized) Feynman amplitudes $I$ with rational parameters, expanded at an integral dimension $D= D_0$, are not only periods (Belkale, Brosnan, Bogner, Weinzierl) but actually multiple zeta values (Broadhurst, Kreimer). In order to determine, at least heuristically, whether this is the case in concrete instances, the philosophy of motives - more specifically, the theory of mixed Tate motives - suggests an arithmetic approach (Kontsevich): counting points of algebraic varieties related to $I$ modulo sufficiently many primes $p$ and c…
