We study an ordinary differential equation controlled by a stochastic process. We present results on existence and uniqueness of solutions, on associated local times (Trotter and Ray-Knight theorems), and on time and direction of bifurcation. A relationship with Lipschitz approximations to Brownian paths is also discussed.
We are concerned with random ordinary differential equations (RODEs). Our main question of interest is how uncertainties in system parameters propagate through the possibly highly nonlinear dynamical system and affect the system's bifurcation behavior. We come up with a methodology to determine the probability of the occurrence of different types of bifurcations (sub- vs super-critical) along a given bifurcation curve based on the probability distribution of the input parameters. In a first step, we reduce the system's behavior to the dynamics on its center manifold. We thereby still capture t…
This article refines the classical notion of a stochastic D-bifurcation to the respective family of n-point motions for homogeneous Markovian stochastic semiflows, such as stochastic Brownian flows of homeomorphisms, and their generalizations. This notion essentially detects at which level $k\leq n$ the support of the invariant measure of the k-point bifurcation has more than one connected component. Stochastic Brownian flows and their invariant measures which were shown by Kunita (1990) to be rigid, in the sense of being uniquely determined by the $1$-and $2$-point motions, and hence only sto…
In this paper, we introduce concepts of pathwise random almost periodic and almost automorphic solutions for dynamical systems generated by non-autonomous stochastic equations. These solutions are pathwise stochastic analogues of deterministic dynamical systems. The existence and bifurcation of random periodic (random almost periodic, random almost automorphic) solutions have been established for a one-dimensional stochastic equation with multiplicative noise.
We investigate the bifurcation phenomena for stochastic systems with multiplicative Gaussian noise, by examining qualitative changes in mean phase portraits. Starting from the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density function of solution processes, we compute the mean orbits and mean equilibrium states. A change in the number or stability type, when a parameter varies, indicates a stochastic bifurcation. Specifically, we study stochastic bifurcation for three prototypical dynamical systems (i.e., saddle-node, transcritical, and pitchfork systems) under multiplicative Gaussian noise, …
In this paper, we study the existence, stability and bifurcation of random complete and periodic solutions for stochastic parabolic equations with multiplicative noise. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of tempered random attractors for the stochastic equations and characterize the structures of the attractors by random complete solutions. We then examine the existence and stability of random complete quasi-solutions and establish the relations of these solutions and the structures of tempered attractors. When the stochastic equations are incorporated with periodic forcing, we obtain…
In this paper, we show that the integration of a stochastic differential equations driven by G-Brownian motion in R can be reduced to the integration of an ordinary differential equations parametrized by a variable in (Ω,F). We study the sample solutions of G-SDEs by an extention of G-Itô formula. And then we also get a comparison theorem for G-SDEs and its applications.
The bifurcation theory of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), and its application to deterministic population models, are by now well established. In this article, we begin to develop a complementary theory for diffusion-like perturbations of dynamical systems, with the goal of understanding the space and time scales of fluctuations near bifurcation points of the underlying deterministic system. To do so we describe the limit processes that arise in the vicinity of the bifurcation point. In the present article we focus on the one-dimensional case.
Nonlinear dynamical systems are sometimes under the influence of random fluctuations. It is desirable to examine possible bifurcations for stochastic dynamical systems when a parameter varies. A computational analysis is conducted to investigate bifurcations of a simple dynamical system under non-Gaussian α-stable Levy motions, by examining the changes in stationary probability density functions for the solution orbits of this stochastic system. The stationary probability density functions are obtained by numerically solving a non local Fokker-Planck equation. This allows numerically investiga…
Some properties of random Conley index are obtained and then a sufficient condition for the existence of abstract bifurcation points for both discrete-time and continuous-time random dynamical systems is presented. This stochastic bifurcation phenomenon is demonstrated by a few examples.
We consider the averaging principle for deterministic or stochastic systems with a fast stochastic component (family of continuous-time Markov chains depending on the state of the system as a parameter). We show that, due to bifurcations in the simplex of invariant probability measures of the chains, the limiting system should be considered on a graph or on an open book with certain gluing conditions in the vertices of the graph (or on the bifurcation surface).
General stochastic Euler schemes for ordinary differential equations are studied. We give proofs on the consistency, the rate of convergence and the asymptotic normality of these procedures.
This paper is devoted to the stochastic optimal control problem of ordinary differential equations allowing for both path-dependence and measurable randomness. As opposed to the deterministic path-dependent cases, the value function turns out to be a random field on the path spaces and it is characterized by a stochastic path-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi (SPHJ) equation. A notion of viscosity solution is proposed and the value function is proved to be the unique viscosity solution to the associated SPHJ equation.
We consider the impact of additive Gaussian white noise on a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation in an unbounded domain. As an example we focus on the stochastic Swift-Hohenberg equation with polynomial nonlinearity. Here we identify the order where small noise first impacts the bifurcation. Using an approximation via modulation equations, we provide a tool to analyse how the noise influences the dynamics close to a change of stability.
In contrast to existing works on stochastic averaging on finite intervals, we establish an averaging principle on the whole real axis, i.e. the so-called second Bogolyubov theorem, for semilinear stochastic ordinary differential equations in Hilbert space with Poisson stable (in particular, periodic, quasi-periodic, almost periodic, almost automorphic etc) coefficients. Under some appropriate conditions we prove that there exists a unique recurrent solution to the original equation, which possesses the same recurrence property as the coefficients, in a small neighborhood of the stationary solu…
Critical transitions (or tipping points) are drastic sudden changes observed in many dynamical systems. Large classes of critical transitions are associated to systems, which drift slowly towards a bifurcation point. In the context of stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs), there are results on growth of variance and autocorrelation before a transition, which can be used as possible warning signs in applications. A similar theory has recently been developed in the simplest setting also for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) for self-adjoint operators in the drift ter…
Warning signs for tipping points (or critical transitions) have been very actively studied. Although the theory has been applied successfully in models and in experiments for many complex systems such as for tipping in climate systems, there are ongoing debates, when warning signs can be extracted from data. In this work, we shed light on this debate by considering different types of underlying noise. Thereby, we significantly advance the general theory of warning signs for nonlinear stochastic dynamics. A key scenario deals with stochastic systems approaching a bifurcation point dynamically u…
On a perturbation theory and on strong convergence rates for stochastic ordinary and partial differential equations with non-globally monotone coefficients
An adaptive network model using SIS epidemic propagation with link-type dependent link activation and deletion is considered. Bifurcation analysis of the pairwise ODE approximation and the network-based stochastic simulation is carried out, showing that three typical behaviours may occur; namely, oscillations can be observed besides disease-free or endemic steady states. The oscillatory behaviour in the stochastic simulations is studied using Fourier analysis, as well as through analysing the exact master equations of the stochastic model. A compact pairwise approximation for the dynamic netwo…
