In this paper, we prove that if D is a simply-connected domain in C^2 with generic piecewise smooth Levi-flat boundary and non-compact automorphism group, then D is biholomorphic to the bidisc. The proof is based on a careful analysis of invariant measures.
We show that every CR-automorphism of the closure of a Levi degenerate hyperquadric in the projective space extends to a holomorphic automorphism of the projective space.
We give a complete classification of polynomial models for smooth real hypersurfaces of finite Catlin multitype in $\mathbb C^3$, which admit nonlinear infinitesimal CR automorphisms. As a consequence, we obtain a sharp 1-jet determination result for any smooth hypersurface with such model. The results also prove a conjecture of the first author about the origin of such nonlinear automorphisms (AIM list of problems, 2010). As another consequence, we describe all possible dimensions of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal CR automorphisms, which leads to a new "secondary" gap phenomenon.
Let $M$ be a real-analytic connected CR-hypersurface of CR-dimension $n>0$ having a point of Levi-nondegeneracy. The following alternative is demonstrated for both the symmetry algebra $s$ and the automorphism group $G$ of $M$. Denote by $d$ the dimension of $s$ or $G$. Then (i) either $d=n^2+4n+3$ and $M$ is spherical everywhere; (ii) or $d\le n^2+2n+2+δ_{2,n}$ and in the case of equality $M$ is spherical of fixed Levi signature in the open dense subset of Levi-nondegenerate points. Explicit examples of CR-hypersurfaces and their infinitesimal and global automorphisms realizing the bound in (…
We study nonlinear automorphisms of Levi degenerate hypersurfaces of finite multitype. By recent results of Kolar, Meylan and Zaitsev, the Lie algebra of infinitesimal CR automorphisms may contain a graded component consisting of nonlinear vector fields of arbitrarily high degree, which has no analog in the classical Levi nondegenerate case, or in the case of finite type hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$. We analyze this phenomenon for hypersurfaces of finite Catlin multitype in complex dimension three. The results provide a complete classification of such manifolds. As a consequence, we show on …
We classify locally defined non-spherical real-analytic hypersurfaces in complex space whose Levi form has no more than one negative eigenvalue and for which the dimension of the group of local CR-automorphisms has the second largest value.
We prove finite jet determination for (finitely) smooth CR diffeomorphisms of (finitely) smooth Levi degenerate hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ by constructing generalized stationary discs glued to such hypersurfaces.
The first part of this paper considers higher order CR invariants of three dimensional hypersurfaces of finite type. Using a full normal form we give a complete characterization of hypersurfaces with trivial local automorphism group, and analogous results for finite groups. The second part considers hypersurfaces of finite Catlin multitype and the Kohn-Nirenberg phenomenon in higher dimensions. We give a necessary condition for local convexifiability of a class of pseudoconvex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^{n+1}$.
We survey results arising from the study of domains in C^n with non-compact automorphism group. Beginning with a well-known characterization of the unit ball, we develop ideas toward a consideration of weakly pseudoconvex (and even non-pseudoconvex) domains with particular emphasis on characterizations of (i) smoothly bounded domains with non-compact automorphism group and (ii) the Levi geometry of boundary orbit accumulation points. Particular attention will be paid to results derived in the past ten years.
Let M be a connected generic real-analytic CR-submanifold of a finite-dimensional complex vector space E. Suppose that for every point a in M the Lie algebra hol(M,a) of germs of all infinitesimal real-analytic CR-automorphisms of M at a is finite-dimensional and its complexification contains all constant vector fields and the Euler vector field. Under these assumptions we show that: (I) every hol(M,a) consists of polynomial vector fields, hence coincides with the Lie algebra hol(M) of all infinitesimal real-analytic CR-automorphisms of M; (II) every local real-analytic CR-automorphism of M ex…
We solve the Levi-flat Plateau problem in the following case. Let $M \subset {\mathbb C}^{n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, be a connected compact real-analytic codimension-two submanifold with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Suppose $M$ is a diffeomorphic image via a real-analytic CR map of a real-analytic hypersurface in ${\mathbb C}^n \times {\mathbb R}$ with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Then there exists a unique compact real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface, nonsingular except possibly for self-intersections, with boundary $M$. We also study boundary regularity of CR automorphisms of domains…
The paper gives a complete description of local automorphism groups for Levi degenerate hypersurfaces of finite type in $\mathbb{C}^2$. We also prove that, with the exception of hypersurfaces of the form $v = |z|^k$, local automorphisms are always determined by 1-jets. This proves a conjecture of D. Zaitsev in the finite type case.
Real-analytic Levi-flat codimension two CR singular submanifolds are a natural generalization to ${\mathbb{C}}^m$, $m > 2$, of Bishop surfaces in ${\mathbb{C}}^2$. Such submanifolds for example arise as zero sets of mixed-holomorphic equations with one variable antiholomorphic. We classify the codimension two Levi-flat CR singular quadrics, and we notice that new types of submanifolds arise in dimension 3 or greater. In fact, the nondegenerate submanifolds, i.e. higher order purturbations of $z_m=\bar{z}_1z_2+\bar{z}_1^2$, have no analogue in dimension 2. We prove that the Levi-foliation exten…
We study the automorphism group action on a bounded domain in $\CC^n$. In particular, we consider boundary orbit accumulation points, and what geometric properties they must have. These properties are formulated in the language of Levi geometry.
Let M be a connected real-analytic hypersurface in N-dimensional complex euclidean space whose Levi form is nondegenerate at some point. We prove that for every point p in M, there exists an integer k=k(M,p) such that germs at p of local real-analytic CR automorphisms of M are uniquely determined by their k-jets (at p). To prove this result we develop a new technique that can be seen as a resolution of the degeneracies of M. This procedure consists of blowing up M near an arbitrary point p in M regardless of its minimality or nonminimality; then, thanks to the blow-up, the original problem can…
For a Hénon map of the form $H(x, y) = (y, p(y) - ax)$, where $p$ is a polynomial of degree at least two and $a \not= 0$, it is known that the sub-level sets of the Green's function $G^+_H$ associated with $H$ are Short $\mathbb C^2$'s. For a given $c > 0$, we study the holomorphic automorphism group of such a Short $\mathbb C^2$, namely $Ω_c = \{ G^+_H < c \}$. The unbounded domain $Ω_c \subset \mathbb C^2$ is known to have smooth real analytic Levi-flat boundary. Despite the fact that $Ω_c$ admits an exhaustion by biholomorphic images of the unit ball, it turns out that its automorphism grou…
In case M is Levi non-degenerate in the sense Tumanov, we construct stationary discs for $M$. If furthermore M satisfies an additional non-degeneracy condition, we apply the method of stationary discs to obtain 2-jet determination of CR automorphisms of M.
A piecewise smooth domain is said to have generic corners if the corners are generic CR manifolds. It is shown that a biholomorphic mapping from a piecewise smooth pseudoconvex domain with generic corners in complex Euclidean space that satisfies Condition R to another domain extends as a smooth diffeomorphism of the respective closures if and only if the target domain is also piecewise smooth with generic corners and satisfies Condition R. Further it is shown that a proper map from a domain with generic corners satisfying Condition R to a product domain of the same dimension extends continuou…
It is shown that two Levi-Tanaka and infinitesimal CR automorphism algebras, associated with a totally nondegenerate model of CR dimension one are isomorphic. As a result, the model surfaces are maximally homogeneous and standard. This gives an affirmative answer in CR dimension one to a certain question formulated by Beloshapka.
We classify all compact simply connected homogeneous CR manifolds $M$ of codimension one and with non-degenerate Levi form up to CR equivalence. The classification is based on our previous results and on a description of the maximal connected compact group $G(M)$ of automorphisms of $M$. We characterize also the standard homogeneous CR manifolds as the homogeneous CR manifolds whose group $G(M)$ in not semisimple.
Let $D$ be a bounded domain in $C^n$. By the theorem of H.~Cartan, the group $Aut(D)$ of all biholomorphic automorphisms of $D$ has a unique structure of a real Lie group such that the action $Aut(D)\times D\to D$ is real analytic. This structure is defined by the embedding $C_v\colon Aut(D)\hookrightarrow D\times Gl_n(C)$, $f\mapsto (f(v), f_{*v})$, where $v\in D$ is arbitrary. Here we restrict our attention to the class of domains $D$ defined by finitely many polynomial inequalities. The appropriate category for studying automorphism of such domains is the Nash category. Therefore we conside…
We explicitly describe germs of strongly pseudoconvex non-spherical real-analytic hypersurfaces $M$ at the origin in $\CC^{n+1}$ for which the group of local CR-automorphisms preserving the origin has dimension $d_0(M)$ equal to either $n^2-2n+1$ with $n\ge 2$, or $n^2-2n$ with $n\ge 3$. The description is given in terms of equations defining hypersurfaces near the origin, written in the Chern-Moser normal form. These results are motivated by the classification of locally homogeneous Levi non-degenerate hypersurfaces in $\CC^3$ with $d_0(M)=1,2$ due to A. Loboda, and complement earlier joint w…
We construct several new examples of homogeneous domains in complex space that do not have bounded realisations. They are equivalent to tubes over affinely homogeneous domains in real space and have a real-analytic everywhere Levi non-degenerate non-umbilic boundary. Using the geometry of the boundary, we determine the full automorphism groups of the domains. We also discuss some interesting examples of tube domains with everywhere umbilic boundary (i.e., boundary equivalent to the corresponding quadric).
We study real-analytic Levi degenerate hypersurfaces M in complex manifolds of dimension 3, for which the CR-automorphism group Aut(M) is a real Lie group acting transitively on M. We provide large classes of examples for such M, compute the corresponding groups Aut(M) and determine the maximal subsets of M that cannot be separated by global continuous CR-functions. It turns out that all our examples, although partly arising in different contexts, are locally CR-equivalent to the tube over the future light cone in 3-dimensional space-time.
