The formal group law of an elliptic curve has seen recent applications to computational algebraic geometry in the work of Couveignes to compute the order of an elliptic curve over finite fields of small characteristic. The purpose of this paper is to explain in an elementary way how to associate a formal group law to an elliptic curve and to expand on some theorems of Couveignes. In addition, the paper serves as background for [J. Number Theory 70 (1998), 127-145]. We treat curves defined over arbitrary fields, including fields of characteristic two or three.
We study a key exchange protocol based on isogenies between ordinary elliptic curves over a finite field, first mentioned by Couveignes and investigated by Rostovtsev and Stolbunov. After presenting the fundamental notions about elliptic curves, we present the theory of complex multiplication which is the theoretical basis of this cryptosystem. Modular curves, which are an essential tool in the computations, are also introduced. We then present the protocol itself and original ideas to boost its practical performances. Finally, we discuss our implementation and practical results.
The problem of computing an explicit isogeny between two given elliptic curves over F_q, originally motivated by point counting, has recently awaken new interest in the cryptology community thanks to the works of Teske and Rostovstev & Stolbunov. While the large characteristic case is well understood, only suboptimal algorithms are known in small characteristic; they are due to Couveignes, Lercier, Lercier & Joux and Lercier & Sirvent. In this paper we discuss the differences between them and run some comparative experiments. We also present the first complete implementation of Couveignes' sec…
This paper gives additional background in algebraic geometry as an accompaniment to the article, ``Formal Groups, Elliptic Curves, and some Theorems of Couveignes'' [arXiv:math.NT/9708215]. Section 1 discusses the addition law on elliptic curves, and Sections 2 and 3 explain about function fields, uniformizers, and power series expansions with respect to a uniformizer.
Elliptic bases, introduced by Couveignes and Lercier in 2009, give an elegant way of representing finite field extensions. A natural question which seems to have been considered independently by several groups is to use this representation as a starting point for small characteristic finite field discrete logarithm algorithms. This idea has been recently proposed by two groups working on it, in order to achieve provable quasi-polynomial time for discrete logarithms in small characteristic finite fields. In this paper, we don't try to achieve a provable algorithm but, instead, investigate the p…
In this paper, we find a power series expansion of the invariant differential $ω_E$ of an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, where $E$ is described by certain families of Weierstrass equations. In addition, we introduce several congruence relations satisfied by the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism of $E$.
We analyze log-algebraic power series identities for formal groups of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ which arise from modular parametrizations. We further investigate applications to special values of elliptic curve $L$-functions.
Classically, Euler developed the theory of the Riemann zeta - function using as his starting point the exponential and partial fraction forms of cot(z) . In this paper we wish to develop the theory of $L$-functions of elliptic curves starting from the theory of elliptic functions in an analogous manner.
We explicitly construct and investigate a number of examples of $\mathbb{Z}/p^r$-equivariant formal group laws and complex-oriented spectra, including those coming from elliptic curves and $p$-divisible groups, as well as some other related examples.
We show that the canonical-lift construction for ordinary elliptic curves over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$ extends uniquely to arbitrary families of ordinary elliptic curves, even over $p$-adic formal schemes. In particular, the universal ordinary elliptic curve has a canonical lift. The existence statement is largely a formal consequence of the universal property of Witt vectors applied to the moduli space of ordinary elliptic curves, at least with enough level structure. As an application, we show how this point of view allows for more formal proofs of recent results of Finotti an…
An elliptic curve $E$ defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ with a $p$-isogeny $ϕ:E\rightarrow E^\prime$ comes equipped with an invariant $α_{ϕ/K}$ that measures the valuation of the leading term of the formal group homomorphism $Φ:\hat E \rightarrow \hat E^\prime$. We prove that if $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is unramified and $E$ has additive, potentially supersingular reduction, then $α_{ϕ/K}$ is determined by the number of distinct geometric components on the special fibers of the minimal proper regular models of $E$ and $E^\prime$.
In this paper, we make a study of the Iwasawa theory of an elliptic curve at a supersingular prime p along an arbitrary Z_p-extension of a number field K in the case when p splits completely in K. Generalizing work of Kobayashi and Perrin-Riou, we define restricted Selmer groups and λ^\pm, μ^\pm-invariants; we then derive asymptotic formulas describing the growth of the Selmer group in terms of these invariants. To be able to work with non-cyclotomic Z_p-extensions, a new local result is proven that gives a complete description of the formal group of an elliptic curve at a supersingular prime …
Diophantine equations are a popular and active area of research in number theory. In this paper we consider Mordell equations, which are of the form $y^2=x^3+d$, where $d$ is a (given) nonzero integer number and all solutions in integers $x$ and $y$ have to be determined. One non-elementary approach for this problem is the resolution via descent and class groups. Along these lines we formalized in Lean 3 the resolution of Mordell equations for several instances of $d<0$. In order to achieve this, we needed to formalize several other theories from number theory that are interesting on their own…
p-jets of finite flat maps of schemes are generally neither finite nor flat. This phenomenon can be seen already in the case of p-isogenies of group schemes. However, for p-divisible groups, this pathology tends to disappear mod p "in the limit". We illustrate this in the case of the p-divisible groups of elliptic curves and of formal groups of finite height; in the case of ordinary elliptic curves the structure in the limit depends on the Serre-Tate parameter.
For $N\geq 3$, we show Tate's conjecture for the elliptic modular surface $E(N)$ of level $N$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ for a prime $p$ satisfying $p\equiv 1\mod N$ outside of a set of primes of density zero. We also prove a strong form of Tate's conjecture for $E(N)$ over any finite field of characteristic $p$ prime to $N$ under the assumption that the formal Brauer group of $E(N)$ is of finite height.
We present an elementary proof of the group properties of the elliptic curve known as "Curve25519", as a component of a comprehensive proof of correctness of a hardware implementation of the associated Diffie-Hellman key agreement algorithm. The entire proof has been formalized and mechanically verified with ACL2, and is computationally surveyable in the sense that all steps that require mechanical support are presented in such a way that they may readily reproduced in any suitable programming language.
Let $k$ be a field of positive characteristic $p$. Question: Does every twisted form of $μ_p$ over $k$ occur as subgroup scheme of an elliptic curve over $k$? We show that this is true for most finite fields, for local fields and for fields of characteristic $p\leq11$. However, it is false in general for fields of characteristic $p\geq13$, which implies that there are also $p$-divisible and formal groups of height one over such fields that do not arise from elliptic curves. It also implies that the Hasse invariant does not obey the Hasse principle. Moreover, we also analyse twisted forms of $p…
Let $L/K$ be a Galois extension of local fields of characteristic $0$ with Galois group $G$. If $\mathcal{F}$ is a formal group over the ring of integers in $K$, one can associate to $\mathcal F$ and each positive integer $n$ a $G$-module $F_L^n$ which as a set is the $n$-th power of the maximal ideal of the ring of integers in $L$. We give explicit necessary and sufficient conditions under which $F_L^n$ is a cohomologically trivial $G$-module. This has applications to elliptic curves over local fields and to ray class groups of number fields.
We give a formulation for descent of level structures on deformations of formal groups, and study the compatibility between the descent and a norm construction. Under this framework, we generalize Ando's construction of H-infinity complex orientations for Morava E-theories associated to Honda formal group laws over F_p. We show the existence and uniqueness of such an orientation for any Morava E-theory associated to a formal group law over an algebraic extension of F_p and, in particular, orientations for a family of elliptic cohomology theories. These orientations correspond to coordinates on…
The aim of this paper is to justify the common cryptographic practice of selecting elliptic curves using their order as the primary criterion. We can formalize this issue by asking whether the discrete log problem (DLOG) has the same difficulty for all curves over a given finite field with the same order. We prove that this is essentially true by showing polynomial time random reducibility of DLOG among such curves, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH). We do so by constructing certain expander graphs, similar to Ramanujan graphs, with elliptic curves as nodes and low degree isoge…
