A ``k-rule" is a sequence A=((A_n,B_n):n<omega) of pairwise disjoint sets B_n, each of cardinality at most k, where A_n is a subset of B_n. A set X of natural numbers (a ``real'') follows a rule A if for infinitely many n we have that the intersection of X with B_n is exactly A_n.
There are obvious cardinal invariants resulting from this definition: the least number of reals needed to follow all k-rules, s_k, and the least number of k-rules without a real following all of them, r_k.
We investigate these cardinal invariants and their connection to some well-known cardinals from Cichon's diagram.
The original motivation for discovering rules was an attempt to construct a maximal homogeneous family over omega. The consistency of such a family is still open.
Answering two questions of D. Fremlin [Real-valued measurable cardinals, in Set Theory of the Reals, H. Judah ed. 1993, 151-305 ] we show the following: (1) If c is real-valued measurable then the Maharam type of (c,P(c),sigma) is 2^c. (2) It is consistent to have k real-valued measurable but for every submodel V_1 with k measurable in it there are no k reals which are random over V_1.
We show that the statement "every universally Baire set of reals has the perfect set property" is equiconsistent modulo ZFC with the existence of a cardinal that we call a virtually Shelah cardinal. These cardinals resemble Shelah cardinals but are much weaker: if $0^\sharp$ exists then every Silver indiscernible is virtually Shelah in $L$. We also show that the statement $\text{uB} = {\bfΔ}^1_2$, where $\text{uB}$ is the pointclass of all universally Baire sets of reals, is equiconsistent modulo ZFC with the existence of a $Σ_2$-reflecting virtually Shelah cardinal.
The additivity spectrum ADD(I) of an ideal I is the set of all regular cardinals kappa such that there is an increasing chain {A_alpha:alpha<kappa\} in the ideal I such that the union of the chain is not in I. We investigate which set A of regular cardinals can be the additivity spectrum of certain ideals. Assume that I=B or I=N, where B denotes the sigma-ideal generated by the compact subsets of the Baire space omega^omega, and N is the ideal of the null sets. For countable sets we give a full characterization of the additivity spectrum of I: a non-empty countable set A of uncountable regular…
We define a generic Vopěnka cardinal to be an inaccessible cardinal $κ$ such that for every first-order language $\mathcal{L}$ of cardinality less than $κ$ and every set $\mathscr{B}$ of $\mathcal{L}$-structures, if $|\mathscr{B}| = κ$ and every structure in $\mathscr{B}$ has cardinality less than $κ$, then an elementary embedding between two structures in $\mathscr{B}$ exists in some generic extension of $V$. We investigate connections between generic Vopěnka cardinals in models of ZFC and the number and complexity of $\aleph_1$-Suslin sets of reals in models of ZF. In particular, we show tha…
$Σ^1_3$-absoluteness for ccc forcing means that for any ccc forcing $P$, ${H_{ω_1}}^V \prec_{Σ_2}{H_{ω_1}}^{V^P}$. "$ω_1$ inaccessible to reals" means that for any real $r$, ${ω_1}^{L[r]}<ω_1$. To measure the exact consistency strength of "$Σ^1_3$-absoluteness for ccc forcing and $ω_1$ is inaccessible to reals", we introduce a weak version of a weakly compact cardinal, namely, a (lightface) $Σ^1_2$-indescribable cardinal; $κ$ has this property exactly if it is inaccessible and $H_κ\prec_{Σ_2} H_{κ^+}$.
We investigate the behavior of cardinal characteristics of the reals under extensions that do not add new ${<}κ$-sequences (for some regular $κ$). As an application, we show that consistently the following cardinal characteristics can be different: The ("independent") characteristics in Cichoń's diagram, plus $\aleph_1<\mathfrak m<\mathfrak p<\mathfrak h<\mathrm{add}(\mathcal{N})$. (So we get thirteen different values, including $\aleph_1$ and continuum). We also give constructions to alternatively separate other MA-numbers (instead of $\mathfrak m$), namely: MA for $k$-Knaster from MA for $k+…
The Necessary Maximality Principle for c.c.c. forcing asserts that any statement about a real in a c.c.c. extension that could become true in a further c.c.c. extension and remain true in all subsequent c.c.c. extensions, is already true in the minimal extension containing the real. We show that this principle is equiconsistent with the existence of a weakly compact cardinal.
We analyze the hereditarily ordinal definable sets $\operatorname{HOD}$ in $M_n(x)[g]$ for a Turing cone of reals $x$, where $M_n(x)$ is the canonical inner model with $n$ Woodin cardinals build over $x$ and $g$ is generic over $M_n(x)$ for the Lévy collapse up to its bottom inaccessible cardinal. We prove that assuming $\boldsymbolΠ^1_{n+2}$-determinacy, for a Turing cone of reals $x$, $\operatorname{HOD}^{M_n(x)[g]} = M_n(\mathcal{M}_{\infty} | κ_\infty, Λ),$ where $\mathcal{M}_\infty$ is a direct limit of iterates of $M_{n+1}$, $δ_\infty$ is the least Woodin cardinal in $\mathcal{M}_\infty$…
Yorioka [J. Symbolic Logic 67(4):1373-1384, 2002] introduced a class of ideals (parametrized by reals) on the Cantor space to prove that the relation between the size of the continuum and the cofinality of the strong measure zero ideal on the real line cannot be decided in ZFC. We construct a matrix iteration of ccc posets to force that, for many ideals in that class, their associated cardinal invariants (i.e. additivity, covering, uniformity and cofinality) are pairwise different. In addition, we show that, consistently, the additivity and cofinality of Yorioka ideals does not coincide with t…
We show that if we add any number of Cohen reals to the ground model then, in the generic extension, a locally compact scattered space has at most (2^{aleph_0})^V many levels of size omega. We also give a complete ZFC characterization of the cardinal sequences of regular scattered spaces. Although the classes of the regular and of the 0-dimensional scattered spaces are different, we prove that they have the same cardinal sequences.
It is proved to be consistent relative to a measurable cardinal that there is a uniform ultrafilter on the real numbers which is generated by fewer than the maximum possible number of sets. It is also shown to be consistent relative to a supercompact cardinal that there is a uniform ultrafilter on ${\aleph}_{ω+1}$ which is generated by fewer than ${2}^{{\aleph}_{ω+1}}$ sets.
A function f from reals to reals (f:R->R) is almost continuous (in the sense of Stallings) iff every open set in the plane which contains the graph of f contains the graph of a continuous function. Natkaniec showed that for any family F of continuum many real functions there exists g:R->R such that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Let AA be the smallest cardinality of a family F of real functions for which there is no g:R->R with the property that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Thus Natkaniec showed that AA is strictly greater than the continuum. He asked if anything more…
We lay the combinatorial foundations for [ShSt:340] by setting up and proving the essential properties of the coding apparatus for singular cardinals. We also prove another result concerning the coding apparatus for inaccessible cardinals.
Shelah-Woodin investigate the possibility of violating instances of $GCH$ through the addition of a single real. In particular they show that it is possible to obtain a failure of $CH$ by adding a single real to a model of $GCH$, preserving cofinalities. In this article we strengthen their result by showing that it is possible to violate $GCH$ at all infinite cardinals by adding a single real to a model of $GCH.$ Our assumption is the existence of an $H(κ^{+3})$-strong cardinal, by work of Gitik and Mitchell it is known that more than an $H(κ^{++})$-strong cardinal is required.
We prove the following result which is due to the third author. Let $n \geq 1$. If $\boldsymbolΠ^1_n$ determinacy and $Π^1_{n+1}$ determinacy both hold true and there is no $\boldsymbolΣ^1_{n+2}$-definable $ω_1$-sequence of pairwise distinct reals, then $M_n^\#$ exists and is $ω_1$-iterable. The proof yields that $\boldsymbolΠ^1_{n+1}$ determinacy implies that $M_n^\#(x)$ exists and is $ω_1$-iterable for all reals $x$. A consequence is the Determinacy Transfer Theorem for arbitrary $n \geq 1$, namely the statement that $\boldsymbolΠ^1_{n+1}$ determinacy implies $\Game^{(n)}(<ω^2 - \boldsymbolΠ…
In this paper we consider the Foreman's maximality principle, which says that any non-trivial forcing notion either adds a new real or collapses some cardinals. We prove the consistency of some of its consequences. We prove that it is consistent that every $c.c.c.$ forcing adds a real and that for every uncountable regular cardinal $κ$, every $κ$-closed forcing of size $2^{<κ}$ collapses some cardinals.
We introduce and analyze a new cardinal characteristic of the continuum, the \emph{splitting number of the reals}, denoted $\mathfrak{s}(\mathbb R)$. This number is connected to Efimov's problem, which asks whether every infinite compact Hausdorff space must contain either a non-trivial convergent sequence, or else a copy of $β\mathbb N$.
Using a countable support product of creature forcing posets, we show that consistently, for uncountably many different functions the associated Yorioka ideals' uniformity numbers can be pairwise different. In addition we show that, in the same forcing extension, for two other types of simple cardinal characteristics parametrised by reals (localisation and anti-localisation cardinals), for uncountably many parameters the corresponding cardinals are pairwise different.

The main result of this paper is to show that, if $κ$ is the smallest real-valued measurable cardinal not greater than $ 2^{\aleph_0}$, then there exists a complete metric space of cardinality not greater than $ 2^κ$ admitting a Kuratowski partition.
This is a revision (and partial retraction) of my previous abstarct. Let $λ(X)$ denote Lebesgue measure. If $X\subseteq [0,1]$ and $r \in (0,1)$ then the $r$-Hausdorff capacity of $X$ is denoted by $H^r(X)$ and is defined to be the infimum of all $\sum_{i=0}^\infty λ(I_i)^r$ where $\{I_i\}_{i\inω}$ is a cover of $X$ by intervals. The $r$ Hausdorff capacity has the same null sets as the $r$-Hausdorff measure which is familiar from the theory of fractal dimension. It is shown that, given $r < 1$, it is possible to enlarge a model of set theory, $V$, by a generic extension $V[G]$ so that the real…
Every conditionally convergent series of real numbers has a divergent subseries. How many subsets of the natural numbers are needed so that every conditionally convergent series diverges on the subseries corresponding to one of these sets? The answer to this question is defined to be the subseries number, a new cardinal characteristic of the continuum. This cardinal is bounded below by $\aleph_1$ and above by the cardinality of the continuum, but it is not provably equal to either. We define three natural variants of the subseries number, and compare them with each other, with their correspond…
Two sets are said to be almost disjoint if their intersection is finite. Almost disjoint subsets of [omega]^omega and omega^omega have been studied for quite some time. In particular, the cardinal invariants a and a_e, defined to be the minimum cardinality of a maximal infinite almost disjoint family of [omega]^omega and omega^omega respectively, are known to be consistently less than continuum. Here we examine analogs for functions in R^omega and projections on l^2, showing that they too can be consistently less than continuum.
