For $0<q\le 2,\ 1\le k < n,$ let $X=(X_1,...,X_n)$ and $Y=(Y_1,...,Y_n)$ be symmetric $q$-stable random vectors so that the joint distributions of $X_1,...,X_k$ and $X_{k+1},...,X_n$ are equal to the joint distributions of $Y_1,...,Y_k$ and $Y_{k+1},...,Y_n,$ respectively, but $Y_i$ and $Y_j$ are independent for every $1\le i \le k,\ k+1\le j \le n.$
We prove that $\Bbb E (f(X)) \ge \Bbb E (f(Y))$ where $f$ is any continuous, positive, homogeneous of the order $p\in (-n,0)$ function on $\Bbb R^n\setminus \{0\}$ such that $f$ is a positive definite distribution in $\Bbb R^n,$ and $f(u,v)=f(u,-v)$ for every $u\in \Bbb R^k,\ v\in \Bbb R^{n-k}.$
As a particular case, we show that $$\Bbb E\ (\max_{i=1,...,n} |X_i|)^p \ge \Bbb E\ (\max_{i=1,...,n} |Y_i|)^p$$ for every $p\in (-n,-n+1).$ The latter inequality is related to Slepian's Lemma and to the Gaussian correlation problem.
In this note, we study inequality and limit theory under sublinear expectations. We mainly prove Doob's inequality for submartingale and Kolmogrov's inequality. By Kolmogrov's inequality, we obtain a special version of Kolmogrov's law of large numbers. Finally, we present a strong law of large numbers for independent and identically distributed random variables under one-order type moment condition.
A real valued function defined on}$\mathbb{R}$ {\small is called}$g${\small --convex if it satisfies the following \textquotedblleft generalized Jensen's inequality\textquotedblright under a given}$g${\small -expectation, i.e., }$h(\mathbb{E}^{g}[X])\leq \mathbb{E}% ^{g}[h(X)]${\small, for all random variables}$X$ {\small such that both sides of the inequality are meaningful. We also studied}$g${\small -concave and}$g${\smal…
Suppose that $X,Y$ are positive random variable and $m$ a numerical (commutative) mean. We prove that the inequality ${\rm E} (m(X,Y)) \leq m({\rm E} (X), {\rm E} (Y))$ holds if and only if the mean is generated by a concave function. With due changes we also prove that the same inequality holds for all operator means in the Kubo-Ando setting. The case of the harmonic mean was proved by C.R. Rao and B.L.S. Prakasa Rao.
In this note, we consider Jensen's inequality for the nonlinear expectation associated with backward SDEs driven by $G$-Brownian motion ($G$-BSDEs for short). At first, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $G$-BSDEs under which one-dimensional Jensen inequality holds. Second, we prove that for $n>1$, the $n$-dimensional Jensen inequality holds for any nonlinear expectation if and only if the nonlinear expectation is linear, which is essentially due to Jia (Arch. Math. 94 (2010), 489-499). As a consequence, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $G$-BSDEs under which the $…
In the first part we study deviation of a polynomial from its mathematical expectation. This deviation can be estimated from above by Carbery--Wright inequality, so we investigate estimates of the deviation from below. We obtain such estimates in two different cases: for Gaussian measures and a polynomial of an arbitrary degree and for an arbitrary log-concave measure but only for polynomials of the second degree. In the second part we deals with isoperimetric inequality and the Poincaré inequality for probability measures on the real line that are images of the uniform distributions on convex…
The inequality of Vapnik and Chervonenkis controls the expectation of the function by its sample average uniformly over a VC-major class of functions taking into account the size of the expectation. Using Talagrand's kernel method we prove a similar result for the classes of functions for which Dudley's uniform entropy integral or bracketing entropy integral is finite.
In this paper we extend the notion of g-evaluation, in particular g-expectation, to the case where the generator g is allowed to have a quadratic growth. We show that some important properties of the g-expectations, including a representation theorem between the generator and the corresponding g-expectation, and consequently the reverse comparison theorem of quadratic BSDEs as well as the Jensen inequality, remain true in the quadratic case. Our main results also include a Doob-Meyer type decomposition, the optional sampling theorem, and the up-crossing inequality. The results of this paper ar…
The paper studies the sampling discretization problem for integral norms on subspaces of $L^p(μ)$. Several close to optimal results are obtained on subspaces for which certain Nikolskii-type inequality is valid. The problem of norms discretization is connected with the probabilistic question about the approximation with high probability of marginals of a high dimensional random vector by sampling. As a byproduct of our approach we refine the result of O. Gu$\acute{e}$don and M. Rudelson concerning the approximation of marginals. In particular, the obtained improvement recovers a theorem of J. …
We prove a Chevet type inequality which gives an upper bound for the norm of an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix in terms of expectation of the supremum of "symmetric exponential" processes compared to the Gaussian ones in the Chevet inequality. This is used to give sharp upper estimate for a quantity $Γ_{k,m}$ that controls uniformly the Euclidean operator norm of the sub-matrices with $k$ rows and $m$ columns of an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix. We apply these estimates to give a sharp bound for the Restricted Isometry Constant of a random matrix with ind…
An important connection between the finite dimensional Gaussian Wick product and Lebesgue convolution product will be proven first. Then this connection will be used to prove an important Hölder inequality for the norms of Gaussian Wick products, reprove Nelson hypercontractivity inequality, and prove a more general inequality whose marginal cases are the Hölder and Nelson inequalities mentioned before. We will show that there is a deep connection between the Gaussian Hölder inequality and classic Hölder inequality, between the Nelson hypercontractivity and classic Young inequality with the sh…
Motivated by the general matrix deviation inequality for i.i.d ensemble Gaussian matrix, we study its universality property. As a starting point for this problem, we show that this property holds for $\ell_{p}$-norm with $1\leq p< \infty$ and i.i.d ensemble sub-Gaussian random matrix, which is a random matrix with i.i.d mean-zero, unit variance, sub-Gaussian entries.
For a measurable function on a set which has a finite measure, an inequality holds between two Lp-norms. In this paper, we show similar inequalities for the Euclidean space and the Lebesgue measure by using a q-moment which is a moment of an escort distribution. As applications of these inequalities, we first derive upper bounds for the Renyi and the Tsallis entropies with given q-moment and derive an inequality between two Renyi entropies. Second, we derive an upper bound for the probability of a subset in the Euclidean space with given Lp-norm on the same set.
An inequality for the $p$th power of the norm of a stochastic convolution integral in a Hilbert space is proved. The inequality is stronger than analogues inequalities in the Literature in the sense that it is pathwise and not in expectation. An application of this inequality is provided for the semilinear stochastic evolution equations with Lévy noise and monotone nonlinear drift. The existence and uniqueness of the mild solutions in $L^p$ for these equations is proved and a sufficient condition for exponential asymptotic stability of the solutions is derived.
We prove estimates for the expected value of operator norms of Gaussian random matrices with independent and mean-zero entries, acting as operators from $\ell^m_{p^*}$ to $\ell_q^n$, $1\leq p^* \leq 2 \leq q \leq \infty$.
The concentration inequality approach for normal approximation by Stein's method is generalized to the multivariate setting. We use this approach to prove a non-smooth function distance for multivariate normal approximation for standardized sums of $k$-dimensional independent random vectors $W=\sum_{i=1}^n X_i$ with an error bound of order $k^{1/2}γ$ where $γ=\sum_{i=1}^n E|X_i|^3$. For sums of locally dependent (unbounded) random vectors, we obtain a fourth moment bound which is typically of order $O_k(1/\sqrt{n})$, as well as a third moment bound which is typically of order $O_k(\log n/\sqrt…
The Paouris inequality gives the large deviation estimate for Euclidean norms of log-concave vectors. We present a modified version of it and show how the new inequality may be applied to derive tail estimates of l_r-norms and suprema of norms of coordinate projections of isotropic log-concave vectors.
Let B be a Brownian motion and T its first hitting time of the level 1. For U a uniform random variable independent of B, we study in depth the distribution of T^{-1/2}B_{UT}, that is the rescaled Brownian motion sampled at uniform time. In particular, we show that this variable is centered.
It has been a well-known problem in the $G$-framework that it is hard to compute the sublinear expectation of the $G$-normal distribution $\hat{\mathbb{E}}[φ(X)]$ when $φ$ is neither convex nor concave, if not involving any PDE techniques to solve the corresponding $G$-heat equation. Recently, we have established an efficient iterative method able to compute the sublinear expectation of \emph{arbitrary} functions of the $G$-normal distribution, which directly applies the \emph{Nonlinear Central Limit Theorem} in the $G$-framework to a sequence of variance-uncertain random variables following t…
Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables on a sub-linear expectation space $(Ω,\mathscr{H},\widehat{\mathbb E})$, $S_n=X_1+\ldots+X_n$. We consider the moments of $\max_{n\ge 1}|S_n|/\sqrt{2n\log\log n}$. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the moments to be finite are given. As an application, we obtain the law of the iterated logarithm for moving average processes of independent and identically distributed random variables.
Recent development in high-dimensional statistical inference has necessitated concentration inequalities for a broader range of random variables. We focus on sub-Weibull random variables, which extend sub-Gaussian or sub-exponential random variables to allow heavy-tailed distributions. This paper presents concentration inequalities for independent sub-Weibull random variables with finite Generalized Bernstein-Orlicz norms, providing generalized Bernstein's inequalities and Rosenthal-type moment bounds. The tightness of the proposed bounds is shown through lower bounds of the concentration ineq…
In the standard Bayesian framework data are assumed to be generated by a distribution parametrized by $θ$ in a parameter space $Θ$, over which a prior distribution $π$ is given. A Bayesian statistician quantifies the belief that the true parameter is $θ_{0}$ in $Θ$ by its posterior probability given the observed data. We investigate the behavior of the posterior belief in $θ_{0}$ when the data are generated under some parameter $θ_{1},$ which may or may not be the same as $θ_{0}.$ Starting from stochastic orders, specifically, likelihood ratio dominance, that obtain for resulting distributions…
Let $μ$ be a Gaussian measure (say, on ${\bf R}^n$) and let $K, L \subset {\bf R}^n$ be such that K is convex, $L$ is a "layer" (i.e. $L = \{x : a \leq < x,u > \leq b \}$ for some $a$, $b \in {\bf R}$ and $u \in {\bf R}^n$) and the centers of mass (with respect to $μ$) of $K$ and $L$ coincide. Then $μ(K \cap L) \geq μ(K) \cdot μ(L)$. This is motivated by the well-known "positive correlation conjecture" for symmetric sets and a related inequality of Sidak concerning confidence regions for means of multivariate normal distributions. The proof uses an apparently hitherto unknown estimate for the …
