In this paper we isolate the notion of Stratified class forcing and show that Stratification implies cofinality-preservation and is preserved by iterations with the appropriate support. Many familiar class forcings are stratified and therefore can be simultaneously iterated without changing cofinalities, provided the proper support is used. Easton forcing, Backward Easton forcings and some modifications of Jensen coding are stratified. Jensen coding is not stratified but instead obeys a related property, Delta-Stratification, which is also preservedby iteration with an appropriate larger support.
We prove that a large class of presaturated ideals at inaccessible cardinals can be de-saturated while preserving their presaturation, answering both a question of Foreman and of Cox and Eskew. We do so by iterating a generalized version of Baumgartner and Taylor's forcing to add a club with finite conditions along an inaccessible cardinal, and invoking Foreman's Duality Theorem.
Iterated admissibility (IA) can be seen as exhibiting a minimal criterion of rationality in games. In order to make this intuition more precise, the epistemic characterization of this game-theoretic solution has been actively investigated in recent times: it has been shown that strategies surviving m+1 rounds of iterated admissibility may be identified as those that are obtained under a condition called rationality and m assumption of rationality (RmAR) in complete lexicographic type structures. On the other hand, it has been shown that its limit condition, $R\infty AR$, might not be satisfied…
Among the Ramsey-type hierarchies, namely, Ramsey's theorem, the free set, the thin set and the rainbow Ramsey theorem, only Ramsey's theorem is known to collapse in reverse mathematics. A promising approach to show the strictness of the hierarchies would be to prove that every computable instance at level n has a low_n solution. In particular, this requires effective control of iterations of the Turing jump. In this paper, we design some variants of Mathias forcing to construct solutions to cohesiveness, the Erdos-Moser theorem and stable Ramsey's theorem for pairs, while controlling their it…
We show that while the length $ω$ iterated ultrapower by a normal ultrafilter is a Boolean ultrapower by the Boolean algebra of Prikry forcing, it is consistent that no iteration of length greater than $ω$ (of the same ultrafilter and its images) is a Boolean ultrapower. For longer iterations, where different ultrafilters are used, this is possible, though, and we give Magidor forcing and a generalization of Prikry forcing as examples. We refer to the discovery that the intersection of the finite iterates of the universe by a normal measure is the same as the generic extension of the direct li…
These notes present a compact and self-contained approach to iterated forcing with a particular emphasis on semiproper forcing. We tried to make our presentation accessible to any scholar who has some familiarity with forcing and boolean valued models and full details of all proofs are given. We focus our presentation using the boolean algebra language and defining an iteration system as a directed and commutative system of complete and injective homomorphisms between complete and atomless boolean algebras. It is well known that the boolean algebra approach to forcing and iterations is fully e…
We present a version with non-definable forcing notions of Shelah's theory of iterated forcing along a template. Our main result, as an application, is that, if $κ$ is a measurable cardinal and $θ<κ<μ<λ$ are uncountable regular cardinals, then there is a ccc poset forcing $\mathfrak{s}=θ<\mathfrak{b}=μ<\mathfrak{a}=λ$. Another application is to get models with large continuum where the groupwise-density number $\mathfrak{g}$ assumes an arbitrary regular value.
We study the nonstationary-support iteration of Prikry forcings below a measurable cardinal κ, characterizing all the normal measures it carries in the generic extension. We then analyze the restriction of ultrapower embeddings, taken with such a normal measure in the generic extension, to the ground model. We prove that every such restriction is an iterated ultrapwer of the ground model, and provide a sufficient condition for its definability there. This is done without core-model theoretic arguments: the assumption that GCH holds in the ground model up to κsuffices.
The class forcing theorem, which asserts that every class forcing notion $\mathbb{P}$ admits a forcing relation $\Vdash_{\mathbb{P}}$, that is, a relation satisfying the forcing relation recursion -- it follows that statements true in the corresponding forcing extensions are forced and forced statements are true -- is equivalent over Gödel-Bernays set theory GBC to the principle of elementary transfinite recursion $\text{ETR}_{\text{Ord}}$ for class recursions of length $\text{Ord}$. It is also equivalent to the existence of truth predicates for the infinitary languages $\mathcal{L}_{\text{Ord…
We continue investigations of reasonable ultrafilters on uncountable cardinals defined in math.LO/0407498. We introduce stronger properties of ultrafilters and we show that those properties may be handled in lambda-support iterations of reasonably bounding forcing notions. We use this to show that consistently there are reasonable ultrafilters on an inaccessible cardinal lambda with generating system of size less than 2^lambda . We also show how reasonable ultrafilters can be killed by forcing notions which have enough reasonable completeness to be iterated with lambda-supports (and we show th…
This is a survey on the amalgamated limit, a limit construction for complete Boolean algebras in iterated forcing theory, which generalizes both the direct limit and the two-step amalgamation. We focus in particular on examples of the amalgamated limit from the literature and on the topological amalgamated limit for compact Hausdorff spaces.
The forcing theorem is the most fundamental result about set forcing, stating that the forcing relation for any set forcing is definable and that the truth lemma holds, that is everything that holds in a generic extension is forced by a condition in the relevant generic filter. We show that both the definability (and, in fact, even the amenability) of the forcing relation and the truth lemma can fail for class forcing. In addition to these negative results, we show that the forcing theorem is equivalent to the existence of a (certain kind of) Boolean completion, and we introduce a weak combina…
In this article we adapt the existing account of class-forcing over a ZFC model to a model $(M,\mathcal{C})$ of Morse-Kelley class theory. We give a rigorous definition of class-forcing in such a model and show that the Definability Lemma (and the Truth Lemma) can be proven without restricting the notion of forcing. Furthermore we show under which conditions the axioms are preserved. We conclude by proving that Laver's Theorem does not hold for class-forcings.
The principle of open class determinacy is preserved by pre-tame class forcing, and after such forcing, every new class well-order is isomorphic to a ground-model class well-order. Similarly, the principle of elementary transfinite recursion $\text{ETR}_Γ$ for a fixed class well-order $Γ$ is preserved by pre-tame class forcing. The full principle ETR itself is preserved by countably strategically closed pre-tame class forcing, and after such forcing, every new class well-order is isomorphic to a ground-model class well-order. Meanwhile, it remains open whether ETR is preserved by all forcing, …
The modal logic of forcing arises when one considers a model of set theory in the context of all its forcing extensions, interpreting necessity as "in all forcing extensions" and possibility as "in some forcing extension". In this modal language one may easily express sweeping general forcing principles, such as the assertion that every possibly necessary statement is necessarily possible, which is valid for forcing, or the assertion that every possibly necessary statement is true, which is the maximality principle, a forcing axiom independent of but equiconsistent with ZFC (Stavi-Väänänen, Ha…
We present three natural combinatorial properties for class forcing notions, which imply the forcing theorem to hold. We then show that all known sufficent conditions for the forcing theorem (except for the forcing theorem itself), including the three properties presented in this paper, imply yet another regularity property for class forcing notions, namely that proper classes of the ground model cannot become sets in a generic extension, that is they do not have set-sized names in the ground model. We then show that over certain models of Gödel-Bernays set theory without the power set axiom, …
In light of the celebrated theorem of Vopěnka (1972), proving in ZFC that every set is generic over HOD, it is natural to inquire whether the set-theoretic universe $V$ must be a class-forcing extension of HOD by some possibly proper-class forcing notion in HOD. We show, negatively, that if ZFC is consistent, then there is a model of ZFC that is not a class-forcing extension of its HOD for any class forcing notion definable in HOD and with definable forcing relations there (allowing parameters). Meanwhile, S. Friedman (2012) showed, positively, that if one augments HOD with a certain ZFC-amena…
I survey an array of topics in set theory in the context of a novel class of forcing notions: subcomplete forcing. Subcompleteness was originally defined by Ronald Jensen. I have attempted to make the subject somewhat more approachable to set theorists, while showing various properties of subcomplete forcing which one might desire of a forcing class, drawing comparisons between subcomplete forcing and countably closed forcing. In particular, I look at the interaction between subcomplete forcing and $ω_1$-trees, preservation properties of subcomplete forcing, the subcomplete maximality principl…
We combine several folklore observations to provide a working framework for iterating constructions which contradict the axiom of choice. We use this to define a model in which any kind of structural failure must fail with a proper class of counterexamples. For example, the rational numbers have a proper class of non-isomorphic algebraic closures, every partial order embeds into the cardinals of the model, every set is the image of a Dedekind-finite set, every weak choice axiom of the form $\mathsf{AC}_X^Y$ fails with a proper class of counterexamples, every field has a vector space with two l…
In this article we introduce and study hyperclass-forcing (where the conditions of the forcing notion are themselves classes) in the context of an extension of Morse-Kelley class theory, called MK$^{**}$. We define this forcing by using a symmetry between MK$^{**}$ models and models of ZFC$^-$ plus there exists a strongly inaccessible cardinal (called SetMK$^{**}$). We develop a coding between $β$-models $\mathcal{M}$ of MK$^{**}$ and transitive models $M^+$ of SetMK$^{**}$ which will allow us to go from $\mathcal{M}$ to $M^+$ and vice versa. So instead of forcing with a hyperclass in MK$^{**}…
We study various classes of maximality principles, $\rm{MP}(κ,Γ)$, introduced by J.D. Hamkins, where $Γ$ defines a class of forcing posets and $κ$ is a cardinal. We explore the consistency strength and the relationship of $\textsf{MP}(κ,Γ)$ with various forcing axioms when $κ\in\{ω,ω_1\}$. In particular, we give a characterization of bounded forcing axioms for a class of forcings $Γ$ in terms of maximality principles MP$(ω_1,Γ)$ for $Σ_1$ formulas. A significant part of the paper is devoted to studying the principle MP$(κ,Γ)$ where $κ\in\{ω,ω_1\}$ and $Γ$ defines the class of stationary set pr…
An $\aleph_1$-Souslin tree is a complicated combinatorial object whose existence cannot be decided on the grounds of ZFC alone. But 15 years after Tennenbaum and independently Jech devised notions of forcing for introducing such a tree, Shelah proved that already the simplest forcing notion --- Cohen forcing --- adds an $\aleph_1$-Souslin tree. In this paper, we identify a rather large class of notions of forcing that, assuming a GCH-type assumption, add a $λ^+$-Souslin tree. This class includes Prikry, Magidor and Radin forcing.
