Let $E$ be a real Banach space. For $x,y \in E,$ we follow R.James in saying that $x$ is orthogonal to $y$ if $\|x+αy\|\geq \|x\|$ for every $α\in R$. We prove that every operator from $E$ into itself preserving orthogonality is an isometry multiplied by a constant.
We prove that every bijection preserving triple transition pseudo-probabilities between the sets of minimal tripotents of two atomic JBW$^*$-triples automatically preserves orthogonality in both directions. Consequently, each bijection preserving triple transition pseudo-probabilities between the sets of minimal tripotents of two atomic JBW$^*$-triples is precisely the restriction of a (complex-)linear triple isomorphism between the corresponding JBW$^*$-triples. This result can be regarded as triple version of the celebrated Wigner theorem for Wigner symmetries on the posets of minimal projec…
In this paper, we extend the notion of orthogonality to the general elements of an absolute matrix order unit space and relate it to the orthogonality among positive elements. We introduce the notion of a partial isometry in an absolute matrix order unit space. As an application, we describe the comparison of order projections. We also discuss finiteness of order projections.
We study Birkhoff-James orthogonality and its local symmetry in some sequence spaces namely $\ell_p,$ for $1\leq p\leq\infty$, $p\neq2$, $c$, $c_0$ and $c_{00}$. Using the characterization of the local symmetry of Birkhoff-James orthogonality, we characterize isometries of each of these spaces onto itself and obtain the Banach-Lamperti theorem for onto operators on the sequence spaces.
Let $\mathbf{F}$ be a Banach space of continuous functions over a connected locally compact space $X$. We present several sufficient conditions on $\mathbf{F}$ guaranteeing that the only multiplication operators on $\mathbf{F}$ that are surjective isometries are scalar multiples of the identity. The conditions are given via the properties of the inclusion operator from $\mathbf{F}$ into $\mathcal{C}\left(X\right)$, as well as in terms of geometry of $\mathbf{F}$. An important tool in our investigation is the notion of Birkhoff Orthogonality.
Let $(S_1, S_2)$ be a bi-isometry, that is, a pair of commuting isometries $S_1$ and $S_2$ on a complex Hilbert space $\mathscr H.$ By the von Neumann-Wold decomposition, the hyper-range $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1):=\cap_{n=0}^\infty S^n_1\mathscr H$ of $S_1$ reduces $S_1$ to a unitary operator. Although $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ is an invariant subspace for $S_2,$ in general, $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ is not a reducing subspace for $S_2.$ We show that $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ reduces $S_2$ to an isometry if and only if the subspaces $S_2(\ker S^*_1)$ and $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ of $\mathscr H$ are…
Regarding the geometry of a real normed space ${\mathcal X}$, we mainly introduce a notion of approximate bisectrix-orthogonality on vectors $x, y \in {\mathcal X}$ as follows: $${x\np{\varepsilon}}_W y \mbox{if and only if} \sqrt{2}\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\varepsilon}\|x\|\,\|y\|\leq \Big\|\,\|y\|x+\|x\|y\,\Big\|\leq\sqrt{2}\frac{1+\varepsilon}{1-\varepsilon}\|x\|\,\|y\|.$$ We study class of linear mappings preserving the approximately bisectrix-orthogonality ${\np{\varepsilon}}_W$. In particular, we show that if $T: {\mathcal X}\to {\mathcal Y}$ is an approximate linear similarity, then $${x\…
Let $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal{F}$ be symmetrically $Δ$-normed (in particular, quasi-normed) operator spaces affiliated with semifinite von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}_1$ and $\mathcal{M}_2$, respectively. We establish a noncommutative version of Abramovich's theorem \cite{A1983}, which provides the general form of normal order-preserving linear operators $T:\mathcal{E} \stackrel{into}{\longrightarrow} \mathcal{F}$ having the disjointness preserving property. As an application, we obtain a noncommutative Huijsmans-Wickstead theorem \cite{Huijsmans_W}. By establishing the disjointness preser…
We introduce the relation $ρ_λ$-orthogonality in the setting of normed spaces as an extension of some orthogonality relations based on norm derivatives, and present some of its essential properties. Among other things, we give a characterization of inner product spaces via the functional $ρ_λ$. Moreover, we consider a class of linear mappings preserving this new kind of orthogonality. In particular, we show that a linear mapping preserving $ρ_λ$-orthogonality has to be a similarity, that is, a scalar multiple of an isometry.
In this paper we present results concerning orthogonality in Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Moreover, for a $C^*$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$, we prove theorems concerning the multi-$\mathscr{A}$-linearity and its preservation by $\mathscr{A}$-linear operators. New version of solution of the orthogonality equation on Hilbert $C^*$-modules and mappings preserving orthogonality are also investigated.
Let C be an axiomatizable class of order continuous real or complex Banach lattices, that is, this class is closed under isometric vector lattice isomorphisms and ultraproducts, and the complementary class is closed under ultrapowers. We show that if linear isometric embeddings of members of C in their ultrapowers preserve disjointness, the class C^B of Banach spaces obtained by forgetting the Banach lattice structure is still axiomatizable. Moreover if C coincides with its "script class" SC, so does C^B with SC^B. This allows us to give new examples of axiomatizable classes of Banach spaces, …
Botelho, Jamison, and Moln\' ar have recently described the general form of surjective isometries of Grassmann spaces on complex Hilbert spaces under certain dimensionality assumptions. In this paper we provide a new approach to this problem which enables us first, to give a shorter proof and second, to remove dimensionality constraints completely. In one of the low dimensional cases, which was not covered by Botelho, Jamison, and Moln\' ar, an exceptional possibility occurs. As a byproduct, we are able to handle the real case as well. Furthermore, in finite dimensions we remove the surectivit…
In this paper we characterize the surjective linear variation norm isometries on JB-algebras. Variation norm isometries are precisely the maps that preserve the maximal deviation, the quantum analogue of the standard deviation, which plays an important role in quantum statistics. Consequently, we characterize the Hilbert's metric isometries on cones in JB-algebras.
In this paper, linear $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving mappings are studied. We define $\hat{\varepsilon}\left(T\right) $ as the smallest $\varepsilon$ for which $T$ is $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving, and then derive an exact formula for $\hat{\varepsilon}\left( T\right) $ in terms of $\left \Vert T\right \Vert $ and the minimum modulus $m\left( T\right) $ of $T$. We see that $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving mappings (for some $\varepsilon<1$) are exactly the operators that are bounded from below. We improve an upper bounded in the stability equation given in [7, Theorem 2.…
We prove that for a bijective, unital, linear map between absolute order unit spaces is an isometry if, and only if, it is absolute value preserving. We deduce that, on (unital) $JB$-algebras, such maps are precisely Jordan isomorphisms. Next, we introduce the notions of absolutely matrix ordered spaces and absolute matrix order unit spaces and prove that for a bijective, unital, linear map between absolute matrix order unit spaces is a complete isometry if, and only if, it is completely absolute value preserving. We obtain that on (unital) C$^*$-algebras such maps are precisely C$^*$-algebra …
We introduce a notion of approximate orthogonality preserving mappings between Hilbert $C^*$-modules. We define the concept of $(δ, \varepsilon)$-orthogonality preserving mapping and give some sufficient conditions for a linear mapping to be $(δ, \varepsilon)$-orthogonality preserving. In particular, if $\mathscr{E}$ is a full Hilbert $\mathscr{A}$-module with $\mathbb{K}(\mathscr{H})\subseteq \mathscr{A} \subseteq \mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ and $T, S:\mathscr{E}\longrightarrow \mathscr{E}$ are two linear mappings satisfying $\big|\langle Sx, Sy\rangle\big| = \|S\|^2\,|\langle x, y\rangle|$ for …

It is known, by Gelfand theory, that every commutative JB$^*$-triple admits a representation as a space of continuous functions of the form $$C_0^{\mathbb{T}}(L) = \{ a\in C_0(L) : a(λt ) = λa(t), \ \forall λ\in \mathbb{T}, t\in L\},$$ where $L$ is a principal $\mathbb{T}$-bundle and $\mathbb{T}$ denotes the unit circle in $\mathbb{C}.$ We provide a description of all orthogonality preserving (non-necessarily continuous) linear maps between commutative JB$^*$-triples. We show that each linear orthogonality preserver $T: C_{0}^{\mathbb{T}} (L_1)\to C_{0}^{\mathbb{T}} (L_2)$ decomposes in three …
Real smooth three-dimensional or higher Banach spaces are isomorphic with respect to the nonlinear structure of Birkhoff-James orthogonality if and only if they are isometrically isomorphic. Moreover, using smooth Radon planes and non-smooth direct sums, in arbitrary dimensions, we construct examples of non-isometric pairs of real Banach spaces that admit norm-preserving homogeneous bicontinuous Birkhoff-James orthogonality preservers among them.
In a first objective we improve our understanding about surjective and bijective bounded linear operators preserving orthogonality from a JB$^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ into a JB$^*$-triple $E$. Among many other conclusions, it is shown that a bounded linear bijection $T: \mathcal{A}\to E$ is orthogonality preserving if, and only if, it is biorthogonality preserving if, and only if, it preserves zero-triple-products in both directions (i.e., $\{a,b,c\}=0 \Leftrightarrow \{T(a),T(b),T(c)\}=0$). In the second main result we establish a complete characterization of all one-parameter groups of ortho…
We present an analogue of Uhlhorn's version of Wigner's theorem on symmetry transformations for the case of indefinite inner product spaces. This significantly generalizes a result of Van den Broek. The proof is based on our main theorem, which describes the form of all bijective transformations on the set of all rank-one idempotents of a Banach space which preserve zero products in both directions.
We prove that if $X$ is a real rearrangement-invariant function space on $[0,1]$, which is not isometrically isomorphic to $L_2,$ then every surjective isometry $T:X\to X$ is of the form $Tf(s)=a(s)f(σ(s))$ for a Borel function $a$ and an invertible Borel map $σ:[0,1] \to [0,1].$ If $X$ is not equal to $L_p$, up to renorming, for some $1\le p\le \infty$ then in addition $|a|=1$ a.e. and $σ$ must be measure-preserving.
The aim of this paper is to present some results concerning the $ρ_*$-orthogonality in real normed spaces and its preservation by linear operators. Among other things, we prove that if $T\,: X \longrightarrow Y$ is a nonzero linear $(I, ρ_*)$-orthogonality preserving mapping between real normed spaces, then $$\frac{1}{3}\|T\|\|x\|\leq\|Tx\|\leq 3[T]\|x\|, \qquad (x\in X)$$ where $[T]:=\inf\{\|Tx\|: \,x\in X, \|x\|=1\}$. We also show that the pair $(X,\perp_{ρ_*})$ is an orthogonality space in the sense of Rätz. Some characterizations of smooth spaces are given based on the $ρ_*$-orthogonality.
We study holomorphic maps between C$^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$. When $f:B_A (0,\varrho) \longrightarrow B$ is a holomorphic mapping whose Taylor series at zero is uniformly converging in some open unit ball $U=B_{A}(0,δ)$ and we assume that $f$ is orthogonality preserving on $A_{sa}\cap U$, orthogonally additive on $U$ and $f(U)$ contains an invertible element in $B$, then there exist a sequence $(h_n)$ in $B^{**}$ and Jordan $^*$-homomorphisms $Θ, \widetildeΘ : M(A) \to B^{**}$ such that $$ f(x) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty h_n \widetildeΘ (a^n)= \sum_{n=1}^\infty Θ (a^n) h_n,$$ uniformly in $a\in U$. W…
Let $X$ be a complex normed space. Based on the right norm derivative $ρ_{_{+}}$, we define a mapping $ρ_{_{\infty}}$ by \begin{equation*} ρ_{_{\infty}}(x,y) = \frac1π\int_0^{2π}e^{iθ}ρ_{_{+}}(x,e^{iθ}y)dθ\quad(x,y\in X). \end{equation*} The mapping $ρ_{_{\infty}}$ has a good response to some geometrical properties of $X$. For instance, we prove that $ρ_{_{\infty}}(x,y)=ρ_{_{\infty}}(y,x)$ for all $x, y \in X$ if and only if $X$ is an inner product space. In addition, we define a $ρ_{_{\infty}}$-orthogonality in $X$ and show that a linear mapping preserving $ρ_{_{\infty}}$-orthogonality has to…
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$ be the Grassmannian formed by $k$-dimensional subspaces of $H$. Suppose that $\dim H>2k$ and $f$ is an orthogonality preserving injective transformation of ${\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$, i.e. for any orthogonal $X,Y\in {\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$ the images $f(X),f(Y)$ are orthogonal. If $\dim H=n$ is finite, then $n=mk+i$ for some integers $m\ge 2$ and $i\in \{0,1,\dots,k-1\}$ (for $i=0$ we have $m\ge 3$). We show that $f$ is a bijection induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator if $i\in \{0,1,2,3\}$ or $m\ge i+1\ge 5$; in particular, the …
We investigate the structure of norm-preserving and linear but not necessarily surjective operators on variable-exponent, discrete Lebesgue spaces. A certain class of isometries, novel to this work, are especially considered; this class completely coincides with all isometries when the Lebesgue space is classical, i.e. of a fixed-exponent. For said isometries it is shown that their actions are completely determined by pairs consisting of set-mappings and bounded functions on $\mathbb{N}$. This result recovers the previously-known structure of isometries on fixed-exponent spaces as a special ca…
We establish a more precise description of those surjective or bijective continuous linear operators preserving orthogonality between C$^*$-algebras. The new description is applied to determine all uniformly continuous one-parameter semigroups of orthogonality preserving operators on an arbitrary C$^*$-algebra. We prove that given a family $\{T_t: t\in \mathbb{R}_0^{+}\}$ of orthogonality preserving bounded linear bijections on a general C$^*$-algebra $A$ with $T_0=Id$, if for each $t\geq 0,$ we set $h_t = T_t^{**} (1)$ and we write $r_t$ for the range partial isometry of $h_t$ in $A^{**},$ an…
The 2-locality problem of diameter-preserving maps between C(X)-spaces is addressed in this paper. For any compact Hausdorff space X with at least three points, we give an example of a 2-local diameter-preserving map on C(X) which is not linear. However, we show that for first countable compact Hausdorff spaces X and Y, every 2-local diameter-preserving map from C(X) to C(Y) is linear and surjective up to constants in some sense. This yields the 2-algebraic reflexivity of isometries with respect to the diameter norms on the quotient spaces.
In this paper, we prove that into isometries and disjointness preserving linear maps from $C_0(X)$ into $C_0(Y)$ are essentially weighted composition operators $Tf = h\cdot f\circφ$ for some continuous map $φ$ and some continuous scalar-valued function $h$.
A mapping $f: {\mathcal M} \to {\mathcal N}$ between Hilbert $C^*$-modules approximately preserves the inner product if \[\|< f(x), f(y)> - < x, y> \| \leq ϕ(x, y),\] for an appropriate control function $ϕ(x,y)$ and all $x, y \in {\mathcal M}$. In this paper, we extend some results concerning the stability of the orthogonality equation to the framework of Hilbert $C^*$-modules on more general restricted domains. In particular, we investigate some asymptotic behavior and the Hyers--Ulam--Rassias stability of the orthogonality equation.
Let ${\mathcal B}(X)$ be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on an infinite dimensional complex Banach space $X$. We prove that an additive surjective map $ϕ$ on ${\mathcal B}(X)$ preserves the reduced minimum modulus if and only if either there are bijective isometries $U:X\to X$ and $V:X\to X$ both linear or both conjugate linear such that $ϕ(T)=UTV$ for all $T\in{\mathcal B}(X)$, or $X$ is reflexive and there are bijective isometries $U:X^*\to X$ and $V:X\to X^*$ both linear or both conjugate linear such that $ϕ(T)=UT^*V$ for all $T\in{\mathcal B}(X)$. As immediate consequences of t…
Let $A$ be a $C^*$-algebra. Let $E$ and $F$ be Hilbert $A$-modules with $E$ being full. Suppose that $θ: E\to F$ is a linear map preserving orthogonality, i.e., $<θ(x), θ(y) > = 0$ whenever $<x, y > = 0$. We show in this article that if, in addition, $A$ has real rank zero, and $θ$ is an $A$-module map (not assumed to be bounded), then there exists a central positive multiplier $u\in M(A)$ such that $<θ(x), θ(y) > = u < x, y>$ ($x,y\in E$). In the case when $A$ is a standard $C^*$-algebra, or when $A$ is a $W^*$-algebra containing no finite type II direct summand, we also obtain the same concl…
Borel probability measures living on metric spaces are fundamental mathematical objects. There are several meaningful distance functions that make the collection of the probability measures living on a certain space a metric space. We are interested in the description of the structure of the isometries of such metric spaces. We overview some of the recent results of the topic and we also provide some new ones concerning the Wasserstein distance. More specifically, we consider the space of all Borel probability measures on the unit sphere of a Euclidean space endowed with the Wasserstein metric…
