We describe a characterization of convex polyhedra in $\h^3$ in terms of their dihedral angles, developed by Rivin. We also describe some geometric and combinatorial consequences of that theory. One of these consequences is a combinatorial characterization of convex polyhedra in $\E^3$ all of whose vertices lie on the unit sphere. That resolves a problem posed by Jakob Steiner in 1832.
We consider triangle faced convex polyhedra inscribed in the unit sphere $S^2$ in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. One way of measuring their deviation from regular polyhedra with triangular faces is to consider the quotient of the lengths of the longest and the shortest edges. If the number of faces tends to infinity, and the polyhedron with this number of faces varies, then the limit inferior of this quotient is $2 \sin 36^{\circ } = 1.1756 \ldots $.
We study convex polyhedra in $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^3$ with all their vertices on a sphere. We do not require, in particular, that the polyhedra lie in the interior of the sphere, hence the term "weakly inscribed". Such polyhedra can be interpreted as ideal polyhedra, if we regard $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^3$ as a combination of the hyperbolic space and the de Sitter space, with the sphere as the common ideal boundary. We have three main results: (1) the $1$-skeleta of weakly inscribed polyhedra are characterized in a purely combinatorial way, (2) the exterior dihedral angles are characterized by l…
We study convex polyhedra in three-space that are inscribed in a quadric surface. Up to projective transformations, there are three such surfaces: the sphere, the hyperboloid, and the cylinder. Our main result is that a planar graph $Γ$ is realized as the $1$-skeleton of a polyhedron inscribed in the hyperboloid or cylinder if and only if $Γ$ is realized as the $1$-skeleton of a polyhedron inscribed in the sphere and $Γ$ admits a Hamiltonian cycle. Rivin characterized convex polyhedra inscribed in the sphere by studying the geometry of ideal polyhedra in hyperbolic space. We study the case of …
In this paper we deal with the problem to find the maximal volume polyhedra with a prescribed property and inscribed in the unit sphere. We generalize those inequality (called by \emph{icosahedron inequality}) of L. Fejes-Tóth of which an interesting consequence the fact that regular icosahedron has maximal volume in the class of the polyhedra with twelve vertices and inscribed in the unit sphere. We give an upper bound for the volume of such star-shaped (with respect to the origin) triangular polyhedra which we know the maximal edge lengths of its faces, respectively. As a further consequence…
The aim of this paper is to describe the largest inscribed circle into the fundamental domains of a discontinuous group in Bolyai-Lobachevsky hyperbolic plane. We give some known basic facts related to the Poincare-Delone problem and the existence notion of the inscribed circle. We study the best circle of the group G = [3, 3, 3, 3] with 4 rotational centers each of order 3. Using the Lagrange multiplier method, we would describe the characteristic of the best-inscribed circle. The method could be applied for the more general case in G = [3, 3, 3,..., 3] with at least 4 rotational centers each…
We generalize Cauchy's celebrated theorem on the global rigidity of convex polyhedra in Euclidean $3$-space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$ to the context of circle polyhedra in the $2$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2}$. We prove that any two convex and proper non-unitary c-polyhedra with Möbius-congruent faces that are consistently oriented are Möbius-congruent. Our result implies the global rigidity of convex inversive distance circle packings in the Riemann sphere as well as that of certain hyperideal hyperbolic polyhedra in $\mathbb{H}^{3}$.
A planar graph is inscribable if it is combinatorial equivalent to the skeleton of a polyhedra which is inscribed in a sphere. For an inscribable graph, in its combinatorial equivalent class, if we could always find polyhedra inscribed in any given convex surface which is sufficiently close to the sphere, then we call such an inscribable graph a stable one. By combining the Teichmüller theory of packings with differential topology method, in this paper there is investigation on the stability of some inscribable graphs.
We establish central limit theorems for natural volumes of random inscribed polytopes in projective Riemannian or Finsler geometries. In addition, normal approximation of dual volumes and the mean width of random polyhedral sets are obtained. We deduce these results by proving a general central limit theorem for the weighted volume of the convex hull of random points chosen from the boundary of a smooth convex body according to a positive and continuous density in Euclidean space. In the background are geometric estimates for weighted surface bodies and Berry-Esseen bounds for functionals of i…
After work of W. P. Thurston, C. Bavard and É. Ghys constructed particular hyperbolic polyhedra from spaces of deformations of Euclidean polygons. We present this construction as a straightforward consequence of the theory of mixed-volumes. The gluing of these polyhedra can be isometrically embedded into complex hyperbolic cone-manifolds constructed by Thurston from spaces of deformations of Euclidean polyhedra. It is then possible to deduce the metric structure of the spaces of polygons embedded in complex hyperbolic orbifolds discovered by P. Deligne and G. D. Mostow.
We review several results related to the characterization of polyhedra in hyperbolic 3-space. In particular we present Rivin's theorem that gives a characterization of compact convex hyperbolic polyhedra, and Hodgson's proof of the Adreev's theorem. We also review the analogous characterization of ideal polyhedra, and give a family of counter-examples that proves that hyperbolic polyhedra are not determined by edge lengths.
We study hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces with faces isometric to regular hyperbolic polygons satisfying that the total angles at vertices are at least $2π.$ The combinatorial information of these surfaces is shown to be identified with that of Euclidean polyhedral surfaces with negative combinatorial curvature everywhere. We prove that there is a gap between areas of non-smooth hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces and the area of smooth hyperbolic surfaces. The numerical result for the gap is obtained for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces, homeomorphic to the double torus, whose 1-skeletons are cubic gr…
An algorithm for determining the list of smallest volume right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra in dimension 3 is described. This algorithm has been implemented on computer using the program Orb to compute volumes, and the first 825 polyhedra in the list have been determined.
A connection between real poles of the growth functions for Coxeter groups acting on hyperbolic space of dimensions three and greater and algebraic integers is investigated. In particular, a geometric convergence of fundamental domains for cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter groups with finite-volume limiting polyhedron provides a relation between Salem numbers and Pisot numbers. Several examples conclude this work.
In this paper we obtain new upper bounds on volumes of right-angled polyhedra in hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ in three different cases: for ideal polyhedra with all vertices on the ideal hyperbolic boundary, for compact polytopes with only finite (or usual) vertices, and for finite volume polyhedra with vertices of both types.
For a compact right-angled polyhedron $R$ in $\mathbb H^3$ denote by $\operatorname{vol} (R)$ the volume and by $\operatorname{vert} (R)$ the number of vertices. Upper and lower bounds for $\operatorname{vol} (R)$ in terms of $\operatorname{vert} (R)$ were obtained in \cite{A09}. Constructing a 2-parameter family of polyhedra, we show that the asymptotic upper bound $5 v_3 / 8$, where $v_3$ is the volume of the ideal regular tetrahedron in $\mathbb H^3$, is a double limit point for ratios $\operatorname{vol} (R) / \operatorname{vert} (R)$. Moreover, we improve the lower bound in the case $\ope…
We are generalizing to higher dimensions the Bavard-Ghys construction of the hyperbolic metric on the space of polygons with fixed directions of edges. The space of convex d-dimensional polyhedra with fixed directions of facet normals has a decomposition into type cones that correspond to different combinatorial types of polyhedra. This decomposition is a subfan of the secondary fan of a vector configuration and can be analyzed with the help of Gale diagrams. We construct a family of quadratic forms on each of the type cones using the theory of mixed volumes. The Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalitie…
The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of convex polyhedra. The proof is based on studying derivatives of the discrete Hilbert-Einstein functional on the space of "warped polyhedra" with a fixed metric on the boundary. This approach is in a sense dual to using derivatives of the volume in order to prove the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity of convex polyhedra, which deals with deformations that preserve face normals and face areas. In the spherical and in the hyperbolic-de Sitter space, there is a perfect duality between the Hilbert-Einstein functional and the volum…
In this paper, we adopt combinatorial Ricci curvature flow methods to study the existence of cusped hyperbolic structure on 3-manifolds with torus boundary. For general pseudo 3-manifolds, we prove the long-time existence and the uniqueness for the extended Ricci flow for decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metrics. We prove that the extended Ricci flow converges to a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric if and only if there exists a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric of zero Ricci curvature. If it is the case, the flow converges exponentially fast. These results apply for cusped hyperbolic …
We consider a compact hyperbolic antiprism. It is a convex polyhedron with $2n$ vertices in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$. This polyhedron has a symmetry group $S_{2n}$ generated by a mirror-rotational symmetry of order $2n$, i.e. rotation to the angle $π/n$ followed by a reflection. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such polyhedra in $\mathbb{H}^3$. Then we find relations between their dihedral angles and edge lengths in the form of a cosine rule. Finally, we obtain exact integral formulas expressing the volume of a hyperbolic antiprism in terms of th…
We suggest a method of computing volume for a simple polytope $P$ in three-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$. This method combines the combinatorial reduction of $P$ as a trivalent graph $Γ$ (the $1$-skeleton of $P$) by $I-H$, or Whitehead, moves (together with shrinking of triangular faces) aligned with its geometric splitting into generalised tetrahedra. With each decomposition (under some conditions) we associate a potential function $Φ$ such that the volume of $P$ can be expressed through a critical values of $Φ$. The results of our numeric experiments with this method suggest th…
We prove that, both in the hyperbolic and spherical 3-spaces, there exist nonconvex compact boundary-free polyhedral surfaces without selfintersections which admit nontrivial continuous deformations preserving all dihedral angles and study properties of such polyhedral surfaces. In particular, we prove that the volume of the domain, bounded by such a polyhedral surface, is necessarily constant during such a deformation while, for some families of polyhedral surfaces, the surface area, the total mean curvature, and the Gauss curvature of some vertices are nonconstant during deformations that pr…
