We carry over to a quite general noncommutative setting some of the basic tools of differential geometry, using from the very beginning the setting of convenient vector spaces developed by Froelicher and Kriegl, which allows to carry all of multilinear algebra into this kind of functional analysis with suitably completed tensor products. In the first section we give a short description of the setting of convenient spaces elaborating those aspects which are needed later. Then we repeat the usual construction of noncommutative differential forms for convenient algebras. Next they show that the bimodule $Ω\sb n (A)$ of universal non-commutative $n$-forms represents the functor of the normalized Hochschild $n$-cocycles. In the third section we introduce the noncommutative version of the Froelicher-Nijenhuis bracket by investigating all bounded graded derivations of the algebra of differential forms. This bracket is then used to formulate the concept of integrability and involutiveness for distributions and to indicate a route towards a theorem of Frobenius. This is then used to discuss bundles and connections in the noncommutative setting and to go some steps towards a noncommutative Chern-Weil homomorphism. In the final section we give a brief description of the noncommutative version of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket and describe Poisson structures.
Newly introduced generalized Poisson structures based on suitable skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order are discussed in terms of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. The associated `Jacobi identities' are expressed as conditions on these tensors, the cohomological contents of which is given. In particular, we determine the linear generalized Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple Lie algebras.
The super or Z_2-graded Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket is introduced. Using it, new generalized super-Poisson structures are found which are given in terms of certain graded-skew-symmetric contravariant tensors Λof even order. The corresponding super `Jacobi identities' are expressed by stating that these tensors have zero super Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket with themselves [Λ,Λ]=0. As a particular case, we provide the linear generalized super-Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple superalgebras with a non-degenerate Killing metric. The su(3,1) superalgebra is given …
Motivated by the Hopf algebra structures established on free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras, we explore Hopf algebra related structures on free commutative Nijenhuis algebras. Applying a cocycle condition, we first prove that a free commutative Nijenhuis algebra on a left counital bialgebra (in the sense that the right-sided counicity needs not hold) can be enriched to a left counital bialgebra. We then establish a general result that a connected graded left counital bialgebra is a left counital right antipode Hopf algebra in the sense that the antipode is also only right-sided. We finally a…
We define two $(n+1)$ graded Lie brackets on spaces of multilinear mappings. The first one is able to recognize $n$-graded associative algebras and their modules and gives immediately the correct differential for Hochschild cohomology. The second one recognizes $n$-graded Lie algebra structures and their modules and gives rise to the notion of Chevalley cohomology.
In this paper we review the recently proposed path-integral counterpart of the Koopman-von Neumann operatorial approach to classical Hamiltonian mechanics. We identify in particular the geometrical variables entering this formulation and show that they are essentially a basis of the cotangent bundle to the tangent bundle to phase-space. In this space we introduce an extended Poisson brackets structure which allows us to re-do all the usual Cartan calculus on symplectic manifolds via these brackets. We also briefly sketch how the Schouten-Nijenhuis, the Frölicher- Nijenhuis and the Nijenhuis-Ri…
We define Gerstenhaber's graded Lie bracket directly on complexes other than the bar complex, under some conditions. The Koszul complex of a Koszul algebra in particular satisfies our conditions. As examples we recover the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket for a polynomial ring and the Gerstenhaber bracket for a group algebra of a cyclic group of prime order.
We construct chain maps between the bar and Koszul resolutions for a quantum symmetric algebra (skew polynomial ring). This construction uses a recursive technique involving explicit formulae for contracting homotopies. We use these chain maps to compute the Gerstenhaber bracket, obtaining a quantum version of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket on a symmetric algebra (polynomial ring). We compute brackets also in some cases for skew group algebras arising as group extensions of quantum symmetric algebras.
With the help of the multigraded Nijenhuis-- Richardson bracket and the multigraded Gerstenhaber bracket from [7] for every $n\ge 2$ we define $n$-ary associative algebras and their modules and also $n$-ary Lie algebras and their modules, and we give the relevant formulas for Hochschild and Chevalley cohomogy.
There exists a unique natural extension of higher Koszul brackets to every unitary associative algebras in a way that every square zero operator of degree 1 gives a curved L-infinity structure.
Let $A$ be a Koszul (or more generally, $N$-Koszul) Calabi-Yau algebra. Inspired by the works of Kontsevich, Ginzburg and Van den Bergh, we show that there is a derived non-commutative Poisson structure on $A$, which induces a graded Lie algebra structure on the cyclic homology of $A$; moreover, we show that the Hochschild homology of $A$ is a Lie module over the cyclic homology and the Connes long exact sequence is in fact a sequence of Lie modules. Finally, we show that the Leibniz-Loday bracket associated to the derived non-commutative Poisson structure on $A$ is naturally mapped to the Ger…
We introduce the notion of \emph{almost commutative Q-algebras} and demonstrate how the derived bracket formalism of Kosmann-Schwarzbach generalises to this setting. In particular, we construct `almost commutative Lie algebroids' following Va\uıntrob's Q-manifold understanding of classical Lie algebroids. We show that the basic tenets of the theory of Lie algebroids carry over verbatim to the almost commutative world.
In this short review article we sketch some developments which should ultimately lead to the analogy of the Chern-Weil homomorphism for principal bundles in the realm of non-commutative differential geometry. Principal bundles there should have Hopf algebras as structure `cogroups'. Since the usual machinery of Lie algebras, connection forms, etc\., just is not available in this setting, we base our approach on the Frölicher--Nijenhuis bracket.
Given a Lie algebra, there uniquely exists a Poisson algebra which is called a Lie-Poisson algebra over the Lie algebra. We will prove that given a Loday/Leibniz algebra there exists uniquely a noncommutative Poisson algebra over the Loday algebra. The noncommutative Poisson algebras are called the Loday-Poisson algebras. In the super/graded cases, the Loday-Poisson bracket is regarded as a noncommutative version of classical (linear) Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. It will be shown that the Loday-Poisson algebras form a special subclass of Aguiar's dual-prePoisson algebras. We also study a proble…
We consider two different constructions of higher brackets. First, based on a Grassmann-odd, nilpotent Δoperator, we define a non-commutative generalization of the higher Koszul brackets, which are used in a generalized Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra, and we show that they form a homotopy Lie algebra. Secondly, we investigate higher, so-called derived brackets built from symmetrized, nested Lie brackets with a fixed nilpotent Lie algebra element Q. We find the most general Jacobi-like identity that such a hierarchy satisfies. The numerical coefficients in front of each term in these generalized Ja…
Brackets by another name, Whitehead or Samelson products, have a history parallel to that in Kosmann-Schwarzbach's From Schouten to Mackenzie: notes on brackets. Here I sketch the development of these and some of the other brackets and products and braces within homotopy theory and homological algebra and with applications to mathematical physics. In contrast to the brackets of Schouten, Nijenhuis and of Gerstenhaber, which involve a relation to another graded product, in homotopy theory many of the brackets are free standing binary operations. My path takes me through many twists and turns. T…
We explore the relationship between the classical constructions of cumulants and Koszul brackets, showing that the former are an expontial version of the latter. Moreover, under some additional technical assumptions, we prove that both constructions are compatible with standard homological perturbation theory in an appropriate sense. As an application of these results, we provide new proofs for the homotopy transfer Theorem for $L_\infty$ and $IBL_\infty$ algebras based on the symmetrized tensor trick and the standard perturbation Lemma, as in the usual approach for $A_\infty$ algebras. Moreov…
For any graded bialgebras $A$ and $B$, we define a commutative graded algebra $A_B$ representing the functor of $B$-representations of $A$. When $A$ is a cocommutative graded Hopf algebra and $B$ is a commutative ungraded Hopf algebra, we introduce a method deriving a Gerstenhaber bracket in $A_B$ from a Fox pairing in $A$ and a balanced biderivation in $B$. Our construction is inspired by Van den Bergh's non-commutative Poisson geometry, and may be viewed as an algebraic generalization of the Atiyah--Bott--Goldman Poisson structures on moduli spaces of representations of surface groups.
The problem of the consistent definition of gauge theories living on the non-commutative (NC) spaces with a non-constant NC parameter $Θ(x)$ is discussed. Working in the L$_\infty$ formalism we specify the undeformed theory, $3$d abelian Chern-Simons, by setting the initial $\ell_1$ brackets. The deformation is introduced by assigning the star commutator to the $\ell_2$ bracket. For this initial set up we construct the corresponding L$_\infty$ structure which defines both the NC deformation of the abelian gauge transformations and the field equations covariant under these transformations. To c…
The existing constructions of derived Lie and sh-Lie brackets involve multilinear maps that are used to define higher order differential operators. In this paper, we prove the equivalence of three different definitions of higher order operators. We then introduce a unifying theme for building derived brackets and show that two prevalent derived Lie bracket constructions are equivalent. Two basic methods of constructing derived strict sh-Lie brackets are also shown to be essentially the same. So far, each of these derived brackets is defined on an abelian subalgebra of a Lie algebra. We describ…
In this paper we will think of certain abelian categories with favorable properties as non-commutative surfaces. We show that under certain conditions a point on a non-commutative surface can be blown up. This yields a new non-commutative surface which is in a certain sense birational to the original one. This construction is analogous to blowing up a Poisson surface in a point of the zero-divisor of the Poisson bracket. By blowing up $\le 8$ points in the elliptic quantum plane one obtains global non-commutative deformations of Del-Pezzo surfaces. For example blowing up six points yields a no…
The paper contains the computation of the noncommutative A-ideal of the figure-eight knot, a noncommutative generalization of the A-polynomial. We show that if a knot has the same noncommutative A-ideal as the figure-eight knot, then all colored Kauffman brackets are the same as those of the figure-eight knot.
An almost commutative algebra, or a $ρ$-commutative algebra, is an algebra which is graded by an abelian group and whose commutativity is controlled by a function called a commutation factor. The same way as a formulation of a supermanifold as a ringed space, we introduce concepts of the $ρ$-commutative versions of manifolds, Q-manifolds, Berezin volume forms, and the modular classes. They are generalizations of the ones in supergeometry. We give examples including a $ρ$-commutative version of the Schouten bracket and a noncommutative torus.
This paper is focused on the structure of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of a punctured surface at roots of unity. A criterion that determines when a collection of skeins forms a basis of the skein algebra as an extension over the $SL(2,{\mathbb C})$ characters of the fundamental group of the surface, with appropriate localization is given. This is used to prove that when the algebra is localized so that every nonzero element of the center has a multiplicative inverse, that it is a division algebra. Finally, it is proved that the localized skein algebra can be split over its center as a te…
Hartwig, Larsson and the second author in [J. Algebra, 2005] defined a bracket on sigma-derivations of a commutative algebra. We show that this bracket preserves inner derivations, and based on this obtain some structural results on sigma-derivations on Laurent polynomials in one variable.
An infinite dimensional algebra which is a non-decomposable reducible representation of $su(2)$ is given. This algebra is defined with respect to two real parameters. If one of these parameters is zero the algebra is the commutative algebra of functions on the sphere, otherwise it is a noncommutative analogue. This is an extension of the algebra normally refered to as the (Berezin) quantum sphere or ``fuzzy'' sphere. A natural indefinite ``inner'' product and a basis of the algebra orthogonal with respect to it are given. The basis elements are homogenious polynomials, eigenvectors of a Laplac…
This paper introduces a chain model for the Deligne-Mumford operad formed by homotopically trivializing the circle in a chain model for the framed little disks. We then show that under degeneration of the Hochschild to cyclic cohomology spectral sequence, a known action of the framed little disks on Hochschild cochains lifts to an action of this new chain model. We thus establish homotopy hyper-commutative algebra structures on both Hochschild and cyclic cochain complexes, and we interpret the gravity brackets on cyclic cohomology as obstructions to degeneration of this spectral sequence. Our …
In this paper we develop Poisson geometry for non-commutative algebras. This generalizes the bi-symplectic geometry which was recently, and independently, introduced by Crawley-Boevey, Etingof and Ginzburg. Our (quasi-)Poisson brackets induce classical (quasi-)Poisson brackets on representation spaces. As an application we show that the moduli spaces of representations associated to the deformed multiplicative preprojective algebras recently introduced by Crawley-Boevey and Shaw carry a natural Poisson structure.
Given a symmetric non degenerated bilinear form b on a vector space V, G. Pinczon and R. Ushirobira defined a bracket {,} on the space of multilinear skewsymmetric forms on V. With this bracket, the quadratic Lie algebra structure equation on (V, b) becomes simply {â, â} = 0. We characterize similarly quadratic associative, commutative or pre-Lie structures on (V, b) by the same equation {â, â} = 0, but on different spaces of forms. These definitions extend to quadratic up to homotopy algebras and allows to describe the corresponding cohomologies.
Poisson brackets (P.b) are the natural initial terms for the deformation quantization of commutative algebras. There is an open problem whether any Poisson bracket on the polynomial algebra of $n$ variables can be quantized. It is known (Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem) that any linear P.b. for all $n$ can be quantized. On the other hand, it is easy to show that in case $n=2$ any P.b. is quantizable as well. Quadratic P.b. appear as the unitial terms for the quantization of polynomial algebras as quadratic algebras. The problem of the quantization of quadratic P.b. is also open. In the paper we…
Different analogs of quasiclassical limit for a q-oscillator which result in different (commutative and non-commutative) algebras of ``classical'' observables are derived. In particular, this gives the q-deformed Poisson brackets in terms of variables on the quantum planes. We consider the Hamiltonian made of special combination of operators (the analog of even operators in Grassmann algebra) and discuss q-path integrals constructed with the help of contracted ``classical'' algebras.
The pentagram map is a discrete integrable system first introduced by Schwartz in 1992. It was proved to be intregable by Schwartz, Ovsienko, and Tabachnikov in 2010. Gekhtman, Shapiro, and Vainshtein studied Poisson geometry associated to certain networks embedded in a disc or annulus, and its relation to cluster algebras. Later, Gekhtman et al. and Tabachnikov reinterpreted the pentagram map in terms of these networks, and used the associated Poisson structures to give a new proof of integrability. In 2011, Mari Beffa and Felipe introduced a generalization of the pentagram map to certain Gra…
We construct a noncommutative Cartan calculus on any braided commutative algebra and study its applications in noncommutative geometry. The braided Lie derivative, insertion and de Rham differential are introduced and related via graded braided commutators, also incorporating the braided Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. The resulting braided Cartan calculus generalizes the Cartan calculus on smooth manifolds and the twisted Cartan calculus. While it is a necessity of derivation based Cartan calculi on noncommutative algebras to employ central bimodules our approach allows to consider bimodules over…
Infinitesimal symmetries of a classical mechanical system are usually described by a Lie algebra acting on the phase space, preserving the Poisson brackets. We propose that a quantum analogue is the action of a Lie bi-algebra on the associative $*$-algebra of observables. The latter can be thought of as functions on some underlying non-commutative manifold. We illustrate this for the non-commutative torus $\mathbb{T}^2_θ$. The canonical trace defines a Manin triple from which a Lie bi-algebra can be constructed. In the special case of rational $θ=\frac{M}{N}$ this Lie bi-algebra is $\underline…
We propose an explicit relation between the cohomology of compactified and noncompactified moduli spaces of algebraic curves with punctures. This relationship generalizes one between commutative algebras and Lie algebras proposed by Lazard, Kontsevich and Ginzburg and Kapranov. More explicitly, we show that the cohomology of one moduli space is the graph complex decorated with the cohomology of the other, which in its turn generalizes Getzler's result for the genus zero moduli. We also show that a certain class of algebras over the chain operad of compactified moduli spaces has a natural struc…
