We provide examples of nonseparable spaces $X$ for which C(X) admits an isometric shift of type I, which solves in the negative a problem proposed by Gutek {\em et al.} (J. Funct. Anal. {\bf 101} (1991), 97-119). We also give two independent methods for obtaining separable examples. The first one allows us in particular to construct examples with infinitely many nonhomeomorphic components in a subset of the Hilbert space $\ell^2$. The second one applies for instance to sequences adjoined to any n-dimensional compact manifold (for $n \ge 2$) or to the Sierpiński curve. The combination of both techniques lead to different examples involving a convergent sequence adjoined to the Cantor set: one method for the case when the sequence converges to a point in the Cantor set, and the other one for the case when it converges outside.
A Toeplitz operator $T_φ$, $φ\in L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, is a partial isometry if and only if there exist inner functions $φ_1, φ_2 \in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ such that $φ_1$ and $φ_2$ depends on different variables and $φ= \barφ_1 φ_2$. In particular, for $n=1$, along with new proof, this recovers a classical theorem of Brown and Douglas. \noindent We also prove that a partially isometric Toeplitz operator is hyponormal if and only if the corresponding symbol is an inner function in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$. Moreover, partially isometric Toeplitz operators are always power partial isometry …
The aim of this paper is to investigate $m$--isometric composition operators on directed graphs with one circuit. We establish a characterization of $m$--isometries and prove that complete hyperexpansiveness coincides with $2$--isometricity within this class. We discuss the $m$--isometric completion problem for unilateral weighted shifts and for composition operators on directed graphs with one circuit. The paper is concluded with an affirmative solution of the Cauchy dual subnormality problem in the subclass with circuit containing one element.
The aim of this paper is to study the Wold-type decomposition in the class of $m$-isometries. One of our main results establishes an equivalent condition for an analytic $m$-isometry to admit the Wold-type decomposition for $m\ge2$. In particular, we introduce the $k$-kernel condition which we use to characterize analytic $m$-isometric operators which are unitarily equivalent to unilateral operator valued weighted shifts for $m\ge2$. As a result, we also show that $m$-isometric composition operators on directed graphs with one circuit containing only one element are not unitarily equivalent to…
We investigate the structure of norm-preserving and linear but not necessarily surjective operators on variable-exponent, discrete Lebesgue spaces. A certain class of isometries, novel to this work, are especially considered; this class completely coincides with all isometries when the Lebesgue space is classical, i.e. of a fixed-exponent. For said isometries it is shown that their actions are completely determined by pairs consisting of set-mappings and bounded functions on $\mathbb{N}$. This result recovers the previously-known structure of isometries on fixed-exponent spaces as a special ca…
A bounded linear Hilbert space operator $S$ is said to be a $2$-isometry if the operator $S$ and its adjoint $S^*$ satisfy the relation $S^{*2}S^{2} - 2 S^{*}S + I = 0$. In this paper, we study Hilbert space operators having liftings or dilations to $2$-isometries. The adjoint of an operator which admits such liftings is characterized as the restriction of a backward shift on a Hilbert space of vector-valued analytic functions. These results are applied to concave operators (i.e., operators $S$ such that $S^{*2}S^{2} - 2 S^{*}S + I \le 0$) and to operators similar to contractions or isometries…
We analyze the hypercyclicity, chaoticity, and spectral structure of (bounded and unbounded) weighted backward shifts in a nonclassical sequence space, which the space $l_1$ of summable sequences is both isometrically isomorphic to and continuously and densely embedded into. Based on the weighted backward shifts, we further construct new bounded and unbounded linear hypercyclic and chaotic operators both in the nonclassical sequence space and the classical space $l_1$, including those that are hypercyclic but not chaotic.
