The following problem is treated: Characterizing the tangent cone and the equimultiple locus of a Puiseux surface (that is, an algebroid embedded surface admitting an equation whose roots are Puiseux power series), using a set of exponents appearing in a root of an equation. The aim is knowing to which extent the well--known results for the quasi--ordinary case can be extended to this much wider family.
This is a survey article on Newton-Okounkov bodies in projective geometry focusing on the relationship between positivity of divisors and Newton-Okounkov bodies.
This is a report of the author's talk at Kinosaki Algebraic Geometry Symposium 2018. We discuss some recent progress on the geometry of thin exceptional sets in Manin's Conjecture.
The Riemann-Hilbert approach for the equations ${\rm PIII(D_6)}$ and ${\rm PIII(D_7)}$ is studied in detail, involving moduli spaces for connections and monodromy data, Okamoto-Painlevé varieties, the Painlevé property, special solutions and explicit Bäcklund transformations.
We apply classical invariant theory of binary forms to explicitly characterize isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves of small genus and, conversely, propose algorithms for reconstructing hyperelliptic models from given invariants. We focus on genus 3 hyperelliptic curves. Both geometric and arithmetic aspects are considered.
This paper studies geometric properties of the Iterated Matrix Multiplication polynomial and the hypersurface that it defines. We focus on geometric aspects that may be relevant for complexity theory such as the symmetry group of the polynomial, the dual variety and the Jacobian loci of the hypersurface, that are computed with the aid of representation theory of quivers.
In 1981 W.L. Edge discovered and studied a pencil $\mathcal{C}$ of highly symmetric genus $6$ projective curves with remarkable properties. Edge's work was based on an 1895 paper of A. Wiman. Both papers were written in the satisfying style of 19th century algebraic geometry. In this paper and its sequel [FL], we consider $\mathcal{C}$ from a more modern, conceptual perspective, whereby explicit equations are reincarnated as geometric objects.
The geometric aspects of mirror symmetry are reviewed, with an eye towards future developments. Given a mirror pair (X,Y) of Calabi-Yau threefolds, the best-understood mirror statements relate certain small corners of the moduli spaces of X and of Y. We will indicate how one might go beyond such statements, and relate the moduli spaces more globally. In fact, in the boldest version of mirror symmetry (the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture), the Calabi-Yau threefolds X and Y should be directly related to each other through a very geometric construction.
This paper reveals some new analytical and geometrical properties of the generalized algebraic multiplicity, $χ$, introduced in [7, 5] and further developed in [20, 23, 24]. In particular, it establishes a completely new connection between $χ$ and the concept of local intersection index of algebraic varieties, a central device in Algebraic Geometry. This link between Nonlinear Spectral Theory and Algebraic Geometry provides to $χ$ with a deep geometrical meaning. Moreover, $χ$ is characterized through the new notion of local determinant of the Schur operator associated to the linear path, $\ma…
In this note we survey recent results on the extrinsic geometry of the Jacobian locus inside $\mathsf{A}_g$. We describe the second fundamental form of the Torelli map as a multiplication map, recall the relation between totally geodesic subvarieties and Hodge loci and survey various results related to totally geodesic subvarieties and the Jacobian locus.
The special uniformity of zeta functions claims that pure non-abelian zeta functions coincide with group zeta functions associated to the special linear groups. Naturally associated are three aspects, namely, the analytic, arithmetic, and geometric aspects. In the first paper of this series, we expose intrinsic geometric structures of our zetas by counting semi-stable bundles on curves defined over finite fields in terms of their automorphism groups and global sections. We show that such a counting maybe read from Artin zetas which are abelian in nature. This paper also contains an appendix wr…
PhD dissertation consists in three lines of investigation involving rational elliptic surfaces, namely 1) a study of conic bundles on these surfaces; 2) an investigation of the possible intersection numbers of two sections and 3) a theorem regarding the set of fibers whose Mordell-Weil ranks are at least 3 units higher than the generic rank of the elliptic fibration.
We use ideas from algebraic geometry and dynamical systems to explain some ways that control points influence the shape of a Bézier curve or patch. In particular, we establish a generalization of Birch's Theorem and use it to deduce sufficient conditions on the control points for a patch to be injective. We also explain a way that the control points influence the shape via degenerations to regular control polytopes. The natural objects of this investigation are irrational patches, which are a generalization of Krasauskas's toric patches, and include Bézier and tensor product patches as importa…
We apply geometric techniques from representation theory to the study of homologically finite differential graded (DG) modules $M$ over a finite dimensional, positively graded, commutative DG algebra $U$. In particular, in this setting we prove a version of a theorem of Voigt by exhibiting an isomorphism between the Yoneda Ext group $\operatorname{YExt}^1_U(M,M)$ and a quotient of tangent spaces coming from an algebraic group action on an algebraic variety. As an application, we answer a question of Vasconcelos from 1974 by showing that a local ring has only finitely many semidualizing complex…
A connection between moduli spaces of algebro-geometric objects and moduli spaces of polyhedral objects has been under investigation in recent years. Loosely speaking, the skeleton of an algebro-geometric moduli space is expressed as the modul space of the skeleta of the objects it parametrizes. The connection is based on the combinatorial properties of the boundary of the algebro-geometric moduli spaces. This paper overviews this topic with focus on moduli of curves, admissible covers, Jacobians and their Neron models.
In this work we study the Humbert-Edge's curves of type 5, defined as a complete intersection of four diagonal quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^5$. We characterize them using Kummer surfaces and using the geometry of these surfaces we construct some vanishing thetanulls on such curves. In addition, we describe an argument to give an isomorphism between the moduli space of Humbert-Edge's curves of type 5 and the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus 2, and we let see how this argument can be generalized to state an isomorphism between the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g=\frac{n-…
Formality is a topological property, defined in terms of Sullivan's model for a space. In the simply-connected setting, a space is formal if its rational homotopy type is determined by the rational cohomology ring. In the general setting, the weaker 1-formality property allows one to reconstruct the rational pro-unipotent completion of the fundamental group, solely from the cup products of degree 1 cohomology classes. In this note, we survey various facets of formality, with emphasis on the geometric and algebraic implications of 1-formality, and its relations to the cohomology jump loci and t…
We consider more general framework than the corresponding one considered in our previous work on the Hodge-Iwasawa theory. In our current consideration we consider the corresponding more general base spaces, namely the analytic adic spaces and analytic perfectoid spaces in Kedlaya's AWS Lecture notes. We hope our discussion will also shed some light on further generalization to even more general spaces such as those considered by Gabber-Ramero namely one just considers certain topological rings which satisfy the Fontaine-Wintenberger idempotent correspondence and calls them perfectoid generali…
In this article we use algebro-geometric tools to describe the structure of a superintegrable system. We study degenerate Neumann system with potential matrix that has some eigenvalues of multiplicity greater than one. We show that the degenerate Neumann system is superintegrable if and only if its spectral curve is reducible and that its flow can be linearized on the generalized Jacobians of the spectral curve. We also show that the generalized Jacobians of the hypereliptic component of the spectral curves are models for the minimal invariant tori of the flow. Moreover the spectral invariants…
In this article we discuss the geometry of moduli spaces of (1) flat bundles over special Lagrangian submanifolds and (2) deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles over complex submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. These moduli spaces reflect the geometry of the Calabi-Yau itself like a mirror. Strominger, Yau and Zaslow conjecture that the mirror Calabi-Yau manifold is such a moduli space and they argue that the mirror symmetry duality is a Fourier-Mukai transformation. We review various aspects of the mirror symmetry conjecture and discuss a geometric approach in proving it. The existence of rig…
