A Q-algebroid is a Lie superalgebroid equipped with a compatible homological vector field and is the infinitesimal object corresponding to a Q-groupoid. We associate to every Q-algebroid a double complex. As a special case, we define the BRST model of a Lie algebroid, which generalizes the BRST model for equivariant cohomology. We extend to this setting the Mathai-Quillen-Kalkman isomorphism of the BRST and Weil models, and we suggest a definition of a basic subcomplex which, however, requires a choice of a connection. Other examples include Roytenberg's homological double of a Lie bialgebroid, Ginzburg's model of equivariant Lie algebroid cohomology, the double of a Lie algebroid matched pair, and Q-algebroids arising from lifted actions on Courant algebroids.
We introduce Courant algebroids, providing definitions, some historical notes, and some elementary properties. Next, we summarize basic properties of graded manifolds. Then, drawing on the work of Roytenberg and others, we introduce the graded or supergraded language demonstrating a cochain complex / cohomology for (general) Courant algebroids. We review spectral sequences and show how this tool is used to compute cohomology of regular Courant algebroids with a split base. Finally we analyze matched pairs of Courant algebroids including the complexified standard Courant algebroid of a complex …
We study the (standard) cohomology $H^\bullet_{st}(E)$ of a Courant algebroid $E$. We prove that if $E$ is transitive, the standard cohomology coincides with the naive cohomology $H_{naive}^\bullet(E)$ as conjectured by Stienon and Xu. For a general Courant algebroid we define a spectral sequence converging to its standard cohomology. If $E$ is with split base, we prove that there exists a natural transgression homomorphism $T_3$ (with image in $H^3_{naive}(E)$) which, together with the naive cohomology, gives all $H^\bullet_{st}(E)$. For generalized exact Courant algebroids, we give an explic…
Let $A \Rightarrow M$ be a Lie algebroid. In this short note, we prove that a pull-back of $A$ along a fibration with homologically $k$-connected fibers, shares the same deformation cohomology of $A$ up to degree $k$.
In this short note we define a new cohomology for a Lie algebroid $\mathcal{A}$, that we call the \emph{twisted cohomology} of $\mathcal{A}$ by an odd cocycle $θ$ in the Lie algebroid cohomology of $\mathcal{A}$. We proof that this cohomology only depends on the Lie algebroid cohomology class $[θ]$ of the odd cocycle $θ$. We give a few examples showing that this new cohomology encompasses various well-known cohomology theories.
We define Lie and Courant algebroids on Fréchet manifolds. Moreover, we construct a Dirac structure on the generalized tangent bundle of a Fréchet manifold and show that it inherits a Fréchet Lie algebroid structure. We show that the Lie algebroid cohomology of the $\bb$-cotangent bundle Lie algebroid of a weakly symplectic Fréchet manifold $M$ is the Lichnerowicz-Poisson cohomology of $M$.
Starting from a Lie algebroid ${\cal A}$ over a space V we lift its action to the canonical transformations on the principle affine bundle ${\cal R}$ over the cotangent bundle $T^*V$. Such lifts are classified by the first cohomology $H^1({\cal A})$. The resulting object is the Hamiltonian algebroid ${\cal A}^H$ over ${\cal R}$ with the anchor map from $\G({\cal A}^H)$ to Hamiltonians of canonical transformations. Hamiltonian algebroids generalize the Lie algebras of canonical transformations. We prove that the BRST operator for ${\cal A}^H$ is cubic in the ghost fields as in the Lie algebra c…
For a transitive Lie algebroid A on a connected manifold M and its a representation on a vector bundle F, we study the localization map Y^1: H^1(A,F)-> H^1(L_x,F_x), where L_x is the adjoint algebra at x in M. The main result in this paper is that: Ker Y^1_x=Ker(p^{1*})=H^1_{deR}(M,F_0). Here p^{1*} is the lift of H^1(\huaA,F) to its counterpart over the universal covering space of M and H^1_{deR}(M,F_0) is the F_0=H^0(L,F)-coefficient deRham cohomology. We apply these results to study the associated vector bundles to principal fiber bundles and the structure of transitive Lie bialgebroids.
We give numerous examples of almost Lie algebroids arising as Dirac structures in pre-Courant algebroids, e.g. from twisted Poisson structures, as well as from twisted actions of a Lie algebra. We moreover define a cohomology for them, motivated by a Q-structure, that is trivial for (bundles of) Lie algebras but characterizes the underlying integrable distribution the image of the anchor map.
We study the behavior of the modular class of a Lie algebroid under general Lie algebroid morphisms by introducing the relative modular class. We investigate the modular classes of pull-back morphisms and of base-preserving morphisms associated to Lie algebroid extensions. We also define generalized morphisms, including Morita equivalences, that act on the 1-cohomology, and observe that the relative modular class is a coboundary on the category of Lie algebroids and generalized morphisms with values in the 1-cohomology.
We study the stability of singular points for smooth Poisson structures as well as general Lie algebroids. We give sufficient conditions for stability lying on the first (not necessarily linear) approximation of the given Poisson structure or Lie algebroid at a singular point. The main tools used here are the classical Lichnerowicz-Poisson cohomology and the deformation cohomology for Lie algebroids recently introduced by Crainic and Moerdijk. We also provide several examples of stable singular points of order $k \geq 1$ for Poisson structures and Lie algebroids. Finally, we apply our results …
Let M be a manifold carrying the action of a Lie group G, and A a Lie algebroid on M equipped with a compatible infinitesimal G-action. Out of these data we construct an equivariant Lie algebroid cohomology and prove for compact G a related localization formula. As an application we prove a Bott-type formula.
We approach Mackenzie's LA-groupoids from a supergeometric point of view by introducing Q-groupoids, which are groupoid objects in the category of Q-manifolds. There is a faithful functor from the category of LA-groupoids to the category of Q-groupoids. We associate to every Q-groupoid a double complex that provides a model for the Q-cohomology of the classifying space. As examples, we obtain models for equivariant Q- and orbifold Q-cohomology, and for equivariant Lie algebroid and orbifold Lie algebroid cohomology. We obtain double complexes associated to Poisson groupoids and groupoid-algebr…
We introduce the notion of skew-holomorphic Lie algebroid on a complex manifold, and explore some cohomologies theories that one can associate to it. Examples are given in terms of holomorphic Poisson structures of various sorts.
The van Est map is a map from Lie groupoid cohomology (with respect to a sheaf taking values in a representation) to Lie algebroid cohomology. We generalize the van Est map to allow for more general sheaves, namely to sheaves of sections taking values in a (smooth or holomorphic) $G$-module, where $G$-modules are structures which differentiate to representations. Many geometric structures involving Lie groupoids and stacks are classified by the cohomology of sheaves taking values in $G$-modules and not in representations, including $S^1$-groupoid extensions and equivariant gerbes. Examples of …
Q-groupoids and Q-algebroids are, respectively, supergroupoids and superalgebroids that are equipped with compatible homological vector fields. These new objects are closely related to the double structures of Mackenzie; in particular, we show that Q-groupoids are intermediary objects between Mackenzie's LA-groupoids and double complexes, which include as a special case the simplicial model of equivariant cohomology. There is also a double complex associated to a Q-algebroid, which in the above special case is the BRST model of equivariant cohomology. Other special cases include models for the…
In the first section we discuss Morita invariance of differentiable/algebroid cohomology. In the second section we present an extension of the van Est isomorphism to groupoids. This immediately implies a version of Haefliger's conjecture for differentiable cohomology. As a first application we clarify the connection between differentiable and algebroid cohomology (proved in degree 1, and conjectured in degree 2 by Weinstein-Xu). As a second application we extend van Est's argument for the integrability of Lie algebras. Applied to Poisson manifolds, this immediately gives (a slight improvement …
In this article, we study the deformations of Filippov algebroids. We define a differential graded Lie algebra (in short DGLA) for a Filippov algebroid by introducing the notion of Filippov multiderivations for a vector bundle. Later on, we discuss deformations of a Filippov algebroid in terms of low-dimensional cohomology associated to this DGLA. We define Nijenhuis operators on Filippov algebroids and characterize trivial deformations of Filippov algebroids in terms of these operators. In the end, we define finite order deformations and discuss the problem of extending a given finite order d…
We show that every Lie algebroid $A$ over a manifold $P$ has a natural representation on the line bundle $Q_A = \wedge^{top}A \otimes \wedge^{top} T^*P$. The line bundle $Q_A$ may be viewed as the Lie algebroid analog of the orientation bundle in topology, and sections of $Q_A$ may be viewed as transverse measures to $A$. As a consequence, there is a well-defined class in the first Lie algebroid cohomology $H^1(A)$ called the modular class of the Lie algebroid $A$. This is the same as the one introduced earlier by Weinstein using the Poisson structure on $A^*$. We show that there is a natural …
For any regular Courant algebroid $E$ over a smooth manifold $M$ with characteristic distribution $F$ and ample Lie algebroid $A_E$, we prove that there exists a canonical homological vector field on the graded manifold $A_E[1] \oplus (TM/F)^\ast[2]$ such that the resulting dg manifold $\mathcal{M}_E$, which we call the minimal model of the Courant algebroid $E$, encodes all cohomological information of $E$. Indeed, the standard cohomology of $E$ can be identified with the cohomology of the function space on $\mathcal{M}_E$, which can be computed by a Hodge-to-de Rham type spectral sequence. W…
By studying the Frölicher-Nijenhuis decomposition of cohomology operators (that is, derivations $D$ of the exterior algebra $Ω(M)$ with $\mathbb{Z}-$degree $1$ and $D^2=0$), we describe new examples of Lie algebroid structures on the tangent bundle $TM$ (and its complexification $T^{\mathbb{C}}M$) constructed from pre-existing geometric ones such as foliations, complex, product or tangent structures. We also describe a class of Lie algebroids on tangent bundles associated to idempotent endomorphisms with nontrivial Nijenhuis torsion.
In this note we compute the cohomology of the elliptic tangent bundle, a Lie algebroid used to describe singular symplectic forms arising from generalized complex geometry.
We introduce and study the notion of representation up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid, paying special attention to examples. We use representations up to homotopy to define the adjoint representation of a Lie algebroid and show that the resulting cohomology controls the deformations of the structure. The Weil algebra of a Lie algebroid is defined and shown to coincide with Kalkman's BRST model for equivariant cohomology in the case of group actions.
In this dissertation we study Courant algebroids, objects that first appeared in the work of T. Courant on Dirac structures; they were later studied by Liu, Weinstein and Xu who used Courant algebroids to generalize the notion of the Drinfeld double to Lie bialgebroids. As a first step towards understanding the complicated properties of Courant algebroids, we interpret them by associating to each Courant algebroid a strongly homotopy Lie algebra in a natural way. Next, we propose an alternative construction of the double of a Lie bialgebroid as a homological hamiltonian vector field on an even…
We introduce a Hopf algebroid associated to a proper Lie group action on a smooth manifold. We prove that the cyclic cohomology of this Hopf algebroid is equal to the de Rham cohomology of invariant differential forms. When the action is cocompact, we develop a generalized Hodge theory for the de Rham cohomology of invariant differential forms. We prove that every cyclic cohomology class of the Hopf algebroid is represented by a generalized harmonic form. This implies that the space of cyclic cohomology of the Hopf algebroid is finite dimensional. As an application of the techniques developed …
Given a Lie algebroid with a representation, we construct a graded Lie algebra whose Maurer-Cartan elements characterize relative Rota-Baxter operators on Lie algebroids. We give the cohomology of relative Rota-Baxter operators and study infinitesimal deformations and extendability of order $n$ deformations to order $n+1$ deformations of relative Rota-Baxter operators in terms of this cohomology theory. We also construct a graded Lie algebra on the space of multi-derivations of a vector bundle whose Maurer-Cartan elements characterize left-symmetric algebroids. We show that there is a homomorp…
We apply the Atiyah-Singer index theorem and tensor products of elliptic complexes to the cohomology of transitive Lie algebroids. We prove that the Euler characteristic of a representation of a transitive Lie algebroid $A$ over a compact manifold $M$ vanishes unless $A=TM$, and prove a general Künneth formula. As applications we give a short proof of a vanishing result for the Euler characteristic of a principal bundle calculated using invariant differential forms, and show that the cohomology of certain Lie algebroids are exterior algebras. The latter result can be seen as a generalization o…
In this paper, we introduce a notion of a left-symmetric algebroid, which is a generalization of a left-symmetric algebra from a vector space to a vector bundle. The left multiplication gives rise to a representation of the corresponding sub-adjacent Lie algebroid. We construct left-symmetric algebroids from $\mathcal O$-operators on Lie algebroids. We study phase spaces of Lie algebroids in terms of left-symmetric algebroids. Representations of left-symmetric algebroids are studied in detail. At last, we study deformations of left-symmetric algebroids, which could be controlled by the second …
For any Lie algebroid A, its 1-jet bundle JA is a Lie algebroid naturally and there is a representation π: JA ->DA. Denote by dJ the corresponding coboundary operator. In this paper, we realize the deformation cohomology of a Lie algebroid A introduced by M. Crainic and I. Moerdijk as the cohomology of a subcomplex (Γ(Hom(^\bulletJA,A)DA), dJ) of the cochain complex (Γ(Hom(^\bulletJA,A)), dJ).
A general form for the boundary coupling of a Lie algebroid Poisson sigma model is proposed. The approach involves using the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism in the AKSZ geometrical version, to write a BRST-invariant coupling for a representation up to homotopy of the target Lie algebroid or its subalgebroids. These considerations lead to a conjectural description of topological D-branes on generalized complex manifolds, which includes A-branes and B-branes as special cases.
We study the Lagrangian antifield BRST formalism, formulated in terms of exterior horizontal forms on the infinite order jet space of graded fields for topological field theories associated to $Q$-bundles. In the case of a trivial Q-bundle with a flat fiber and arbitrary base, we prove that the BRST cohomology are isomorphic to the cohomology of the target space differential "twisted" by the de Rham cohomology of the base manifold. This generalizes the local result of G. Barnich and M. Grigoriev, computed for a flat base manifold.
We develop a theory of Lie algebroids over differentiable stacks that extends the standard theory of Lie algebroids over manifolds. In particular we show that Lie algebroids satisfy descent for submersions, define the category of Lie algebroids over a differentiable stack, construct a cohomology theory for these objects, and explain the relation to the theory of $\mathcal{LA}$-groupoids. We construct a number of examples.
On every split supermanifold equipped with the Rothstein even super-Poisson bracket we construct a deformation quantization by means of a Fedosov-type procedure. In other words, the supercommutative algebra of all smooth sections of the dual Grassmann algebra bundle of an arbitrarily given vector bundle E (equipped with a fibre metric) over a symplectic manifold M will be deformed by a series of bidifferential operators having first order supercommutator proportional to the Rothstein superbracket. Moreover, we discuss two constructions related to the above result, namely the quantized BRST-coh…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of modular class of a Lie algebroid $A$ equipped with a Nambu structure satisfying some suitable hypothesis. We also introduce cohomology and homology theories for such Lie algebroids and prove that these theories are connected by a duality isomorphism when the modular class is null.
We study holomorphic Poisson manifolds and holomorphic Lie algebroids from the viewpoint of real Poisson geometry. We give a characterization of holomorphic Poisson structures in terms of the Poisson Nijenhuis structures of Magri-Morosi and describe a double complex which computes the holomorphic Poisson cohomology. A holomorphic Lie algebroid structure on a vector bundle $A\to X$ is shown to be equivalent to a matched pair of complex Lie algebroids $(T^{0,1}X,A^{1,0})$, in the sense of Lu. The holomorphic Lie algebroid cohomology of $A$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of the elliptic Lie alge…
After defining cohomologically higher order BRST and anti-BRST operators for a compact simple algebra {\cal G}, the associated higher order Laplacians are introduced and the corresponding supersymmetry algebra $Σ$ is analysed. These operators act on the states generated by a set of fermionic ghost fields transforming under the adjoint representation. In contrast with the standard case, for which the Laplacian is given by the quadratic Casimir, the higher order Laplacians $W$ are not in general given completely in terms of the Casimir-Racah operators, and may involve the ghost number operator. …
Almost Lie algebroids are generalizations of Lie algebroids, when the Jacobiator is not necessary null. A simple example is given, for which a Lie algebroid bracket or a Courant bundle is not possible for the given anchor, but a natural extension of the bundle and the new anchor allows a Lie algebroid bracket. A cohomology and related characteristic classes of an almost Lie algebroid are also constructed. We prove that these characteristic classes are all pull-backs of the characteristic classes of the base space, as in the case of a Lie algebroid.
It has been shown recently that the geometry of D-branes in general topologically twisted (2,2) sigma-models can be described in the language of generalized complex structures. On general grounds such D-branes (called generalized complex (GC) branes) must form a category. We compute the BRST cohomology of open strings with both ends on the same GC brane. In mathematical terms, we determine spaces of endomorphisms in the category of GC branes. We find that the BRST cohomology can be expressed as the cohomology of a Lie algebroid canonically associated to any GC brane. In the special case of B-b…
We give an explicit description, in terms of bracket, anchor, and pairing, of the standard cochain complex associated to a Courant algebroid. In this formulation, the differential satisfies a formula that is formally identical to the Cartan formula for the de Rham differential. This perspective allows us to develop the theory of Courant algebroid connections in a way that mirrors the classical theory of connections. Using a special class of connections, we construct secondary characteristic classes associated to any Courant algebroid.
We construct a generalization of Courant algebroids which are classified by the third cohomology group $H^3(A,V)$, where $A$ is a Lie Algebroid, and $V$ is an $A$-module. We see that both Courant algebroids and $\mathcal{E}^1(M)$ structures are examples of them. Finally we introduce generalized CR structures on a manifold, which are a generalization of generalized complex structures, and show that every CR structure and contact structure is an example of a generalized CR structure.
We define the "localized index" of longitudinal elliptic operators on Lie groupoids associated to Lie algebroid cohomology classes. We derive a topological expression for these numbers using the algebraic index theorem for Poisson manifolds on the dual of the Lie algebroid. Underlying the definition and computation of the localized index, is an action of the Hopf algebroid of jets around the unit space, and the characteristic map it induces on Lie algebroid cohomology. This map can be globalized to differentiable groupoid cohomology, giving a definition as well as a computation of the "global …
We introduce conformal Courant algebroids, a mild generalization of Courant algebroids in which only a conformal structure rather than a bilinear form is assumed. We introduce exact conformal Courant algebroids and show they are classified by pairs $(L,H)$ with $L$ a flat line bundle and $H \in H^3(M,L)$ a degree 3 class with coefficients in $L$. As a special case gerbes for the crossed module $({\rm U}(1) \to \mathbb{Z}_2)$ can be used to twist $TM \oplus T^*M$ into a conformal Courant algebroid. In the exact case there is a twisted cohomology which is 4-periodic if $L^2 = 1$. The structure o…

This thesis deals with deformations of VB-algebroids and VB-groupoids. They can be considered as vector bundles in the categories of Lie algebroids and groupoids and encompass several classical objects, including Lie algebra and Lie group representations, 2-vector spaces and the tangent and the cotangent algebroid (groupoid) to a Lie algebroid (groupoid). Moreover, they are geometric models for some kind of representations of Lie algebroids (groupoids), namely 2-term representations up to homotopy. Finally, it is well known that Lie groupoids are "concrete" incarnations of differentiable stack…
