Let \sum_{n\in N^d} f_{n_1, ..., n_d} x_1^{n_1}... x_d^{n_d} be a multivariate generating function that converges in a neighborhood of the origin of C^d. We present a new, multivariate method for computing the asymptotics of the diagonal coefficients f_{a_1n,...,a_dn} and show its superiority over the standard, univariate diagonal method.
For finite complex reflexion groups, we consider the graded $W$-modules of diagonally harmonic polynomials in $r$ sets of variables, and show that associated Hilbert series may be described in a global manner, independent of the value of $r$.
This is the first in a series of papers in which we describe explicit structural properties of spaces of diagonal rectangular harmonic polynomials in $k$ sets of $n$ variables, both as $GL_k$-modules and $S_n$-modules, as well as some of there relations to areas such as Algebraic Combinatorics, Representation Theory, Algebraic Geometry, Knot Theory, and Theoretical Physics. Our global aim is to develop a unifying point of view for several areas of research of the last two decades having to do with Macdonald Polynomials Operator Theory, Diagonal Coinvariant Spaces, Rectangular-Catalan Combinato…
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for some irreducible components of $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-modules of multivariate diagonal harmonics. To this end we introduce a new path combinatorial object $T_{n,s}$ allowing us to give the formula directly in terms of Schur functions. This paper also contains formulas written in terms of Schur functions in the $q$ and $t$ variables for special cases of $\nabla(e_n)$, $\nabla^r(e_n)$ and $Δ'_{e_k}(e_n)$. We also give an interpretation in term of path to the adjoint dual Pieri rule applied on these $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-characters.
It is known that the number of minimal factorizations of the long cycle in the symmetric group into a product of $k$ cycles of given lengths has a very simple formula: it is $n^{k-1}$ where $n$ is the rank of the underlying symmetric group and $k$ is the number of factors. In particular, this is $n^{n-2}$ for transposition factorizations. The goal of this work is to prove a multivariate generalization of this result. As a byproduct, we get a multivariate analog of Postnikov's hook length formula for trees, and a refined enumeration of final chains of noncrossing partitions.
Let $\sum_{β\in\nats^d} F_βx^β$ be a multivariate power series. For example $\sum F_βx^β$ could be a generating function for a combinatorial class. Assume that in a neighbourhood of the origin this series represents a nonentire function $F=G/H^p$ where $G$ and $H$ are holomorphic and $p$ is a positive integer. Given a direction $α\in\pnats^d$ for which the asymptotics are controlled by a smooth point of the singular variety $H = 0$, we compute the asymptotics of $F_{n α}$ as $n\to\infty$. We do this via multivariate singularity analysis and give an explicit formula for the full asymptotic expa…
Let $F(x)= \sum_{ν\in\NN^d} F_νx^ν$ be a multivariate power series with complex coefficients that converges in a neighborhood of the origin. Assume $F=G/H$ for some functions $G$ and $H$ holomorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. We derive asymptotics for the coefficients $F_{rα}$ as $r \to \infty$ with $rα\in \NN^d$ for $α$ in a permissible subset of $d$-tuples of positive reals. More specifically, we give an algorithm for computing arbitrary terms of the asymptotic expansion for $F_{rα}$ when the asymptotics are controlled by a transverse multiple point of the analytic variety $H = 0$. Thi…
Let $\{a_\rr : \rr \in (\Z^+)^d \}$ be a $d$-dimensional array of numbers, for which the generating function $F(\zz) := \sum_\rr a_\rr \zz^\rr$ is meromorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. For example, $F$ may be a rational multivariate generating function. We discuss recent results that allow the effective computation of asymptotic expansions for the coefficients of $F$. Our purpose is to illustrate the use of these techniques on a variety of problems of combinatorial interest. The survey begins by summarizing previous work on the asymptotics of univariate and multivariate generating funct…
Combinatorial aspects of multivariate diagonal invariants of the symmetric group are studied. As a consequence it is proved the existence of a multivariate extension of the classical Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Further byproduct are a pure combinatorial algorithm to describe the irreducible decomposition of the tensor product of two irreducible representations of the symmetric group, and new symmetry results on permutation enumeration with respect to descent sets.
In this paper, we use the multivariate analytic techniques of Pemantle and Wilson to derive asymptotic formulae for the coefficients of a broad class of multivariate generating functions with algebraic singularities. Flajolet and Odlyzko (1990) analyzed the coefficients of a class of univariate generating functions with algebraic singularities. These results have been extended to classes of multivariate generating functions by Gao and Richmond (1992) and Hwang (1996, 1998), in both cases by immediately reducing the multivariate case to the univariate case. Pemantle and Wilson (2013) outlined n…
We consider a number of combinatorial problems in which rational generating functions may be obtained, whose denominators have factors with certain singularities. Specifically, there exist points near which one of the factors is asymptotic to a nondegenerate quadratic. We compute the asymptotics of the coefficients of such a generating function. The computation requires some topological deformations as well as Fourier-Laplace transforms of generalized functions. We apply the results of the theory to specific combinatorial problems, such as Aztec diamond tilings, cube groves, and multi-set perm…
This paper presents a new method to solve functional equations of multivariate generating functions, such as $$F(r,s)=e(r,s)+xf(r,s)F(1,1)+xg(r,s)F(qr,1)+xh(r,s)F(qr,qs),$$ giving a formula for $F(r,s)$ in terms of a sum over finite sequences. We use this method to show how one would calculate the coefficients of the generating function for parallelogram polyominoes, which is impractical using other methods. We also apply this method to answer a question from fully commutative affine permutations.
This note examines linear combinations of multi-indexed sequences and derives the multivariate generating function of such a linear combination in terms of the original sequence's m.g.f. Applications include finding distributions and moments of non-negative discrete random variables conditioned on non-negative linear combinations of the original variables. Examples include independent Poisson r.v.'s and a $d$-variate multinomial distribution.
Convolutions for Tribonacci numbers involving binomial coefficients are treated with ordinary generating functions and the diagonalization method of Hautus and Klarner. In this way, the relevant generating function can be established, which is rational. The coefficients can also be expressed. It is sketched how to extend this to Tetranacci numbers and similar quantities.
Let F be the quotient of an analytic function with a product of linear functions. Working in the framework of analytic combinatorics in several variables, we compute asymptotic formulae for the Taylor coefficients of F using multivariate residues and saddle-point approximations. Because the singular set of F is the union of hyperplanes, we are able to make explicit the topological decompositions which arise in the multivariate singularity analysis. In addition to effective and explicit asymptotic results, we provide the first results on transitions between different asymptotic regimes, and pro…
We generalize multivariate hook product formulae for $P$-partitions. We use Macdonald symmetric functions to prove a $(q,t)$-deformation of Gansner's hook product formula for the generating functions of reverse (shifted) plane partitions. (The unshifted case has also been proved by Adachi.) For a $d$-complete poset, we present a conjectural $(q,t)$-deformation of Peterson--Proctor's hook product formula.
A polyomino is a finite, edge-connected set of cells in the plane. At the present time, an enumeration of all polyominoes is nowhere in sight. On the other hand, there are several subsets of polyominoes for which generating functions are known. For example, there exists extensive knowledge about column-convex polyominoes, a model introduced by Temperley in 1956. While studying column-convex polyominoes, researchers also gave a look at diagonally convex polyominoes (DCPs), but noticed an awkward feature: when the last diagonal of a DCP is deleted, the remaining object is not always a polyomino.…
The question of classifying the nature of the generating functions of restricted lattice walks has enjoyed much attention in past years. We prove that a certain class of octant walks have a D-finite generating function using the theory of multivariate formal Laurent series.
The coefficient sequences of multivariate rational functions appear in many areas of combinatorics. Their diagonal coefficient sequences enjoy nice arithmetic and asymptotic properties, and the field of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV) makes it possible to compute asymptotic expansions. We consider these methods from the point of view of effectivity. In particular, given a rational function, ACSV requires one to determine a (generically) finite collection of points that are called critical and minimal. Criticality is an algebraic condition, meaning it is well treated by class…
This work presents new asymptotic formulas for family of walks in Weyl chambers. The models studied here are defined by step sets which exhibit many symmetries and are restricted to the first orthant. The resulting formulas are very straightforward: the exponential growth of each model is given by the number of steps, while the sub-exponential growth depends only on the dimension of the underlying lattice and the number of steps moving forward in each coordinate. These expressions are derived by analyzing the singular variety of a multivariate rational function whose diagonal counts the lattic…
The generating function that records the sizes of directed circuit partitions of a connected 2-in, 2-out digraph D can be determined from the interlacement graph of D with respect to a directed Euler circuit; the same is true of the generating functions for other kinds of circuit partitions. The interlace polynomials of Arratia, Bollobás and Sorkin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 92 (2004) 199-233; Combinatorica 24 (2004) 567-584] extend the corresponding functions from interlacement graphs to arbitrary graphs. We introduce a multivariate interlace polynomial that is an analogous extension of a mult…
The mean values of non-homogeneously parameterized generating exponential are obtained and investigated for the periodic Heisenberg XX model. The norm-trace generating function of boxed plane partitions with fixed volume of their diagonal parts is obtained as N-particles average of the generating exponential. The generating function of self-avoiding walks of random turns vicious walkers is obtained in terms of the circulant matrices that leads to generalizations of the Ramus's identity. Under various specifications of the generating exponential, the N-particles averages arise for a set of inco…
A plateau in a Motzkin path is a sequence of three steps: an up step, a horizontal step, then a down step. We find three different forms for the bivariate generating function for plateaus in Motzkin paths, then generalize to longer plateaus. We conclude by describing a further generalization: a continued fraction form from which one can easily derive new multivariate generating functions for various kinds of path statistics. Several examples of generating functions are given using this technique.
We explain a discontinuous drop in the exponential growth rate for certain multivariate generating functions at a critical parameter value, in even dimensions d at least 4. This result depends on computations in the homology of the algebraic variety where the generating function has a pole. These computations are similar to, and inspired by, a thread of research in applications of complex algebraic geometry to hyperbolic PDEs, going back to Leray, Petrowski, Atiyah, Bott and Garding. As a consequence, we give a topological explanation for certain asymptotic phenomenon appearing in the combinat…
The problem to decide whether a given multivariate (quasi-)rational function has only positive coefficients in its power series expansion has a long history. It dates back to Szego in 1933 who showed certain quasi-rational function to be positive, in the sense that all the series coefficients are positive, using an involved theory of special functions. In contrast to the simplicity of the statement, the method was surprisingly difficult. This dependency motivated further research for positivity of (quasi-)rational functions. More and more (quasi-)rational functions have been proven to be posit…
Let $a_n$ denote the number of ways in which a chess rook can move from a corner cell to the opposite corner cell of an $n \times n \times n$ three-dimensional chessboard, assuming that the piece moves closer to the goal cell at each step. We describe the computer-driven \emph{discovery and proof} of the fact that the generating series $G(x)= \sum_{n \geq 0} a_n x^n$ admits the following explicit expression in terms of a Gaussian hypergeometric function: \[ G(x) = 1 + 6 \cdot \int_0^x \frac{\,\pFq21{1/3}{2/3}{2} {\frac{27 w(2-3w)}{(1-4w)^3}}}{(1-4w)(1-64w)} \, dw.\]
This paper presents a multivariate generalization of Flajolet and Odlyzko's transfer theorem. Similarly to the univariate version, the theorem assumes $Δ$-analyticity (defined coordinate-wise) of a function $A(z_1,\ldots,z_d)$ at a unique dominant singularity $(ρ_1,\ldots,ρ_d) \in (\mathbb C_*)^d$, and allows one to translate, on a term-by-term basis, an asymptotic expansion of $A(z_1,\ldots,z_d)$ around $(ρ_1,\ldots,ρ_d)$ into a corresponding asymptotic expansion of its Taylor coefficients $a_{n_1,\ldots,n_d}$. We treat the case where the asymptotic expansion of $A(z_1,\ldots,z_d)$ contains o…
Given a multivariate generating function F, we determine asymptotics for the coefficients. Our approach is to use Cauchy's integral formula near singular points of F, resulting in a tractable oscillating integral. This paper treats the case where the singular point of F is a smooth point of a surface of poles. Companion papers will treat singular points of F where the local geometry is more complicated, and for which other methods of analysis are not known.
In a seminal 2007 paper, Andrews introduced a class of combinatorial objects that generalize partitions called $k$-marked Durfee symbols. Multivariate rank generating functions for these objects have been shown by many to have interesting modularity properties at certain vectors of roots of unity. Motivated by recent studies of rank generating functions for strongly unimodal sequences, we apply methods of Andrews to define an analogous class of combinatorial objects called $k$-marked strongly unimodal symbols that generalize strongly unimodal sequences. We establish a multivariate rank generat…
