The study of polynomial solutions to the classical Lamé equation in its algebraic form, or equivalently, of double-periodic solutions of its Weierstrass form has a long history. Such solutions appear at integer values of the spectral parameter and their respective eigenvalues serve as the ends of bands in the boundary value problem for the corresponding Schrödinger equation with finite gap potential given by the Weierstrass $\wp$-function on the real line. In this paper we establish several natural (and equivalent) formulas in terms of hypergeometric and elliptic type integrals for the density of the appropriately scaled asymptotic distribution of these eigenvalues when the integer-valued spectral parameter tends to infinity. We also show that this density satisfies a Heun differential equation with four singularities.
By application of the theory for second-order linear differential equations with two turning points developed in \cite{Olver1975}, uniform asymptotic approximations are obtained for the Lamé and Mathieu functions with a large real parameter. The approximations are expressed in terms of parabolic cylinder functions, and are uniformly valid in their respective real open intervals. In all cases explicit bounds are supplied for the error terms associated with the approximations. Approximations are also obtained for their respective eigenvalues.
We establish a hierarchy of weighted majorization relations for the singularities of generalized Lamé equations and the zeros of their Van Vleck and Heine-Stieltjes polynomials as well as for multiparameter spectral polynomials of higher Lamé operators. These relations translate into natural dilation and subordination properties in the Choquet order for certain probability measures associated with the aforementioned polynomials. As a consequence we obtain new inequalities for the moments and logarithmic potentials of the corresponding root-counting measures and their weak-$^*$ limits in the se…
We study the spectral polynomial of the Treibich-Verdier potential. Such spectral polynomial, which is a generalization of the classical Lame polynomial, plays fundamental roles in both the finite-gap theory and the ODE theory of Heun's equation. In this paper, we prove that all the roots of such spectral polynomial are real and distinct under some assumptions. The proof uses the classical concept of Sturm sequence and isomonodromic theories. We also prove an analogous result for a polynomial associated with a generalized Lame equation. Differently, our new approach is based on the viewpoint o…
By application of the theory for second-order linear differential equations with two turning points developed in [Olver F.W.J., Philos. Trans. Roy. Soc. London Ser. A 278 (1975), 137-174], uniform asymptotic approximations are obtained in the first part of this paper for the Lamé and Mathieu functions with a large real parameter. These approximations are expressed in terms of parabolic cylinder functions, and are uniformly valid in their respective real open intervals. In all cases explicit bounds are supplied for the error terms associated with the approximations. Approximations are also obta…
I consider the power series expansion of Lame function in the Weierstrass's form and its integral forms applying three term recurrence formula[1]. I investigate asymptotic expansions of Lame function for the cases of infinite series and polynomials. I will show how the power series expansion of Lame functions in the Weierstrass's form can be converted to closed-form integrals for all cases of infinite series and polynomial. One interesting observation resulting from the calculations is the fact that a Gauss hypergeometric function recurs in each of sub-integral forms: the first sub-integral fo…
Polynomial solutions to the generalized Lamé equation, the \textit{Stieltjes polynomials}, and the associated \textit{Van Vleck polynomials} have been studied since the 1830's, beginning with Lamé in his studies of the Laplace equation on an ellipsoid, and in an ever widening variety of applications since. In this paper we show how the zeros of Stieltjes polynomials are distributed and present two new interlacing theorems. We arrange the Stieltjes polynomials according to their Van Vleck zeros and show, firstly, that the zeros of successive Stieltjes polynomials of the same degree interlace, a…
Lame equation arises from deriving Laplace equation in ellipsoidal coordinates; in other words, it's called ellipsoidal harmonic equation. Lame functions are applicable to diverse areas such as boundary value problems in ellipsoidal geometry, chaotic Hamiltonian systems, the theory of Bose-Einstein condensates, etc. In this paper I will apply three term recurrence formula [arXiv:1303.0806] to the power series expansion in closed forms of Lame function in the algebraic form(infinite series and polynomial) and its integral forms including all higher terms of A_n's. I will show how to transform p…
Lame equation arises from deriving Laplace equation in ellipsoidal coordinates; in other words, it's called ellipsoidal harmonic equation. Lame function is applicable to diverse areas such as boundary value problems in ellipsoidal geometry, chaotic Hamiltonian systems, the theory of Bose-Einstein condensates, etc. By applying generating function into modern physics (quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, black hole, supersymmetry, special functions, etc), we are able to obtain the recursion relation, a normalization constant for the wave function and expectation values of any physical quantities. …
We consider correlation functions for the Wess-Zumino-Witten model on the torus with the insertion of a Cartan element; mathematically this means that we consider the function of the form $F=\Tr (Φ_1 (z_1)\ldots Φ_n (z_n)q^{-\d}e^{h})$ where $Φ_i$ are intertwiners between Verma modules and evaluation modules over an affine Lie algebra $\ghat$, $\d$ is the grading operator in a Verma module and $h$ is in the Cartan subalgebra of $\g$. We derive a system of differential equations satisfied by such a function. In particular, the calculation of $q\frac{\d} {\d q} F$ yields a parabolic second order…
We provide an asymptotic expansion for $\sum_{k=1}^n \left\{\sqrt{k}\right\}$. In the same spirit, we discuss the case of n-th root and it relation to special values of Riemman's zeta function.
We analyze the asymptotic distribution of roots of Charlier polynomials with negative parameter depending linearly on the index. The roots cluster on curves in the complex plane. We determine implicit equations for these curves and deduce the limiting density of the root distribution supported on these curves. The proof is based on a determination of the limiting Cauchy transform in a specific region and a careful application of the saddle point method. The obtained result represents a solvable example of a more general open problem.
We study the asymptotic distribution of roots of Lommel polynomials as polynomials of the order with a variable and purely imaginary argument. The roots are complex and accumulate on certain curves in the complex plane. We prove existence of the weak limit of corresponding root-counting measures and deduce formulas for the supporting curves and density. The obtained result represents a solvable example of a more general problem which is still open. Numerical illustrations of the main result are also involved.
There is a vast theory of the asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure on $\mathbb{R}$ and its applications to Jacobi matrices. That theory has an obvious affine invariance and a very special role for $\infty$. We extend aspects of this theory in the setting of rational functions with poles on $\overline{\mathbb{R}} = \mathbb{R} \cup \{\infty\}$, obtaining a formulation which allows multiple poles and proving an invariance with respect to $\overline{\mathbb{R}}$-preserving Möbius transformations. We obtain a characterization of Stahl--Totik regularity of a GMP ma…
This work investigates spectrum and root functions (that is, eigen- and associated functions) of a Sturm-Liouville problem involving an abstract linear operator (nonselfadjoint in general) in the equation together with supplementary transmission conditions at the one interior singular point. So, the problem under consideration is not pure differential pro lem. At first we establish isomorphism and coerciveness with respect to the spectral parameter for the corresponding nonhomogeneous problem. Then by suggesting an own our method we prove that the spectrum of the considered problem is discrete…
A series expansion for Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions $φ_λ$ is obtained for all $λ\in \mathfrak a^*_{\mathbb C}.$ As a consequence, estimates for $φ_λ$ away from the walls of a Weyl chamber are established. We also characterize the bounded hypergeometric functions and thus prove an analogue of the celebrated theorem of Helgason and Johnson on the bounded spherical functions on a Riemannian symmetric space of the noncompact type. The $L^p$-theory for the hypergeometric Fourier transform is developed for $0<p<2$. In particular, an inversion formula is proved when $1\leq p <2$.
In this note we study the number of real roots of a wide class of random orthogonal polynomials with gaussian coefficients. Using the method of Wiener Chaos we show that the fluctuation in the bulk is asymptotically gaussian, even when the local correlations are not necessarily the same.
Orthogonalisation of the (ordered) base $\lbrace 1,z^{-1},z,z^{-2},z^{2}, >...c,z^{-k},z^{k},...c \rbrace$ with respect to the real inner product $(f,g) \mapsto \int_{\mathbb{R}}f(s)g(s) \exp (-\mathscr{N} V(s)) \md s$, $\mathscr{N} \in \mathbb{N}$, where $V$ is real analytic on $\mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}$, $\lim_{| x | \to \infty}(V(x)/ \ln (x^{2} + 1)) = +\infty$, and $\lim_{| x | \to 0} (V(x)/\ln (x^{-2} + 1)) = +\infty$, yields the even degree and odd degree orthonormal Laurent polynomials (OLPs), $ϕ_{2n}(z) = \sum_{k=-n}^{n} ξ^{(2n)}_{k}z^{k}$, with $ξ^{(2n)}_{n} > 0$, and $ϕ_{2n+1}(z) =…
We study the roots of the generalised Hermite polynomials $H_{m,n}$ when both $m$ and $n$ are large. We prove that the roots, when appropriately rescaled, densely fill a bounded quadrilateral region, called the elliptic region, and organise themselves on a deformed rectangular lattice, as was numerically observed by Clarkson. We describe the elliptic region and the deformed lattice in terms of elliptic integrals and their degenerations. Keywords: Generalised Hermite polynomials; roots asymptotics; Painleve IV; Boutroux Curves; Tritronquee solution.
