We present a regularity result for weak solutions of the 2D quasi-geostrophic equation with supercritical ($α< 1/2$) dissipation $(-Δ)^α$ : If a Leray-Hopf weak solution is Hölder continuous $θ\in C^δ({\mathbb R}^2)$ with $δ>1-2α$ on the time interval $[t_0, t]$, then it is actually a classical solution on $(t_0,t]$.
We prove that weak solutions of a slightly supercritical quasi-geostrophic equation become smooth for large time. We prove it using a De Giorgi type argument using ideas from a recent paper by Caffarelli and Vasseur.
Motivated by the De Giorgi type argument used in a recent paper by Caffarelli and Vasseur, we prove Hölder-regularity for weak solutions of the supercritical quasi-geostrophic equation with minimal assumptions on the initial datum.
In this paper we prove, if $θ\in C([0,\infty),H^{2-2α}(\mathbb R^2))$ is a global solution of supercritical surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation with small initial data, then $\|θ(t)\|_{H^{2-2α}}$ decays to zero as time goes to infinity. Fourier analysis and standard techniques are used.
This paper studies the regularity and energy conservation problems for the 2D supercritical quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation. We apply an approach of splitting the dissipation wavenumber to obtain a new regularity condition which is weaker than all the Prodi-Serrin type regularity conditions. Moreover, we prove that any weak solution of the supercritical SQG in $L^2(0,T; B^{1/2}_{2,c(\mathbb N)})$ satisfies energy equality.
We use a nonlocal maximum principle to prove the global existence of smooth solutions for a slightly supercritical surface quasi-geostrophic equation. By this we mean that the velocity field $u$ is obtained from the active scalar $θ$ by a Fourier multiplier with symbol $i k^\perp |k|^{-1} m(k|)$, where $m$ is a smooth increasing function that grows slower than $\log \log |k|$ as $|k|\rightarrow \infty$.
We consider the $2$D dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation with the time periodic external force and prove the existence of a unique time periodic solution in the case of the supercritical dissipation. In this case, the smoothing effect of the semigroup generated by the dissipation term is too weak to control the nonlinearity in the Duhamel term of the correponding integral equation. In this paper, we give a new approach which does not depend on the contraction mapping principle for the integral equation.
Recently, Silvestre proved that certain weak solutions of the slightly supercritical surface quasi-geostrophic equation eventually become smooth. To prove this, he employed a De Giorgi type argument originated in the work of Caffarelli and Vasseur. Kiselev and Nazarov proved a variation of the result of Caffarelli and Vasseur by introducing a class of test functions. Motivated by the results of Silvestre, we will modify the class of test functions from the work of Kiselev and Nazarov and use this modified class to show that a solution to the supercritical SQG that is smooth up to a certain tim…
In this paper, following the techniques of Foias and Temam, we establish suitable Gevrey class regularity of solutions to the supercritical quasi-geostrophic equations in the whole space, with initial data in "critical" Sobolev spaces. Moreover, the Gevrey class that we obtain is "near optimal" and as a corollary, we obtain temporal decay rates of higher order Sobolev norms of the solutions. Unlike the Navier-Stokes or the subcritical quasi-geostrophic equations, the low dissipation poses a difficulty in establishing Gevrey regularity. A new commutator estimate in Gevrey classes, involving the…
We address the well-posedness theory for the magento-geostrophic equation, namely an active scalar equation in which the divergence-free drift velocity is one derivative more singular than the active scalar. In the presence of supercritical fractional diffusion given by (-Δ)^γ, where 0<γ<1, we discover that for γ>1/2 the equations are locally well-posed, while for γ<1/2 they are ill-posed, in the sense that there is no Lipschitz solution map. The main reason for the striking loss of regularity when γgoes below 1/2 is that the constitutive law used to obtain the velocity from the active scalar …

We consider the 2D quasi-geostrophic equation with supercritical dissipation and dispersive forcing in the whole space. When the dispersive amplitude parameter is large enough, we prove the global well-posedness of strong solution to the equation with large initial data. We also show the strong convergence result as the amplitude parameter goes to $\infty$. Both results rely on the Strichartz-type estimates for the corresponding linear equation.
The initial value problem for the two dimensional dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation derived from geophisical fluid dynamics is studied. The dissipation of this equation is given by the fractional Laplacian. It is known that the half Laplacian is a critical dissipation for the quasi-geostrophic equation. In this paper, far field asymptotics of solutions are given in the critical and the supercritical cases.
We prove the global regularity of smooth solutions for a dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation with both velocity and dissipation logarithmically supercritical compared to the critical equation. By this, we mean that a symbol defined as a power of logarithm is added to both velocity and dissipation terms to penalize the equation's criticality. Our primary tool is the nonlinear maximum principle which provides transparent proofs of global regularity for nonlinear dissipative equations. Combining the nonlinear maximum principle with a modulus of continuity, we prove a uniform-in-time gr…
In the present study, we find that the surface quasi-geostrophic equation admits exact solutions, which evolve with time in quasi-stationary states. The solutions presented are available for any dissipation effect $κ(-Δ)^α$ ($κ>0$, $0\le α<1$), involved in the equation. When the equation is supercritical ($0\le α<\frac12$), the problem on the existence of large global regular solutions remains open. This study, however, provides explicit sample solutions for the understanding of the uncertain problem.
We show a global existence result of weak solutions for a class of generalized Surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation in the inviscid case. We also prove the global regularity of such solutions for the equation with slightly supercritical dissipation, which turns out to correspond to a logarithmically supercritical diffusion due to the singular nature of the velocity. Our last result is the eventual regularity in the supercritical cases for such weak solutions. The main idea in the proof of the existence part is based on suitable commutator estimates along with a careful cutting into low/high freq…
We introduce a determining wavenumber for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation defined for each individual trajectory and then study its dependence on the force. While in the subcritical and critical cases this wavenumber has a uniform upper bound, it may blow up when the equation is supercritical. A bound on the determining wavenumber provides determining modes, which in some sense measure the number of degrees of freedom of the flow, or resolution needed to describe a solution to the SQG equation.
The paper is devoted to the study of slightly supercritical active scalars with nonlocal diffusion. We prove global regularity for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) and Burgers equations, when the diffusion term is supercritical by a symbol with roughly logarithmic behavior at infinity. We show that the result is sharp for the Burgers equation. We also prove global regularity for a slightly supercritical two-dimensional Euler equation. Our main tool is a nonlocal maximum principle which controls a certain modulus of continuity of the solutions.
We consider the initial value problem for the fractionally dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation \[ \partial_t θ+ \mathcal{R}^\perp θ\cdot \nabla θ+ Λ^γθ= 0, \qquad θ(\cdot,0) =θ_0 \] on $\mathbb{T}^2 = [0,1]^2$, with $γ\in (0,1)$. The coefficient in front of the dissipative term $Λ^γ= (-Δ)^{γ/2}$ is normalized to $1$. We show that given a smooth initial datum with $\|θ_0\|_{L^2}^{γ/2} \|θ_0\|_{\dot{H}^2}^{1-γ/2}\leq R$, where {\em $R$ is arbitrarily large}, there exists $γ_1 = γ_1(R) \in (0,1)$ such that for $γ\geq γ_1$, the solution of the supercritical SQG equation with dissipation $Λ^γ$ d…

We examine the regularity of weak solutions of quasi-geostrophic (QG) type equations with supercritical ($α<1/2$) dissipation $(-Δ)^α$. This study is motivated by a recent work of Caffarelli and Vasseur, in which they study the global regularity issue for the critical ($α= 1/2$) QG equation \cite{CV}. Their approach successively increases the regularity levels of Leray-Hopf weak solutions: from $L^2$ to $L^\infty$, from $L^\infty$ to Hölder ($C^δ$, $δ>0$), and from Hölder to classical solutions. In the supercritical case, Leray-Hopf weak solutions can still be shown to be $L^\infty$, but it do…
Let $α\in(0,2)$ and $d\in{\mathbb N}$. Consider the following SDE in ${\mathbb R}^d$:$${\rm d}X_t=b(t,X_t){\rm d} t+a(t,X_{t-}){\rm d} L^{(α)}_t,\ \ X_0=x,$$where $L^{(α)}$ is a $d$-dimensional rotationally invariant $α$-stable process, $b:{\mathbb R}_+\times{\mathbb R}^d\to{\mathbb R}^d$ and $a:{\mathbb R}_+\times{\mathbb R}^d\to{\mathbb R}^d\otimes{\mathbb R}^d$ are H{ö}lder continuous functions in space, with respective order $β,γ\in (0,1)$ such that $(β\wedge γ)+α>1$, uniformly in $t$. Here $b$ may be unbounded.When $a$ is bounded and uniformly elliptic, we show that the unique solution $X…
We review some recent results for a class of fluid mechanics equations called active scalars, with fractional dissipation. Our main examples are the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, the Burgers equation, and the Cordoba-Cordoba-Fontelos model. We discuss nonlocal maximum principle methods which allow to prove existence of global regular solutions for the critical dissipation. We also recall what is known about the possibility of finite time blow up in the supercritical regime.
In this paper we show that the solution of the supercrti- cal surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation, starting from initial data in homogeneous critical Besov spaces belong to a subanalytic Gevrey class. In particular, we improve upon the result of Dong and Li in [26], where they showed that the solutions of Chen-Miao-Zhang (cf. [11]) are classical solutions. We extend the approach of Biswas (cf. [7]) to critical, L^p -based Besov spaces, and adapt the point of view of Lemarie- Rieusset (cf. [36]), who treated the operator arising from applying the analytic Gevrey operator to a product of an…
