In this paper we study the behaviour of the continuous spectrum of the Laplacian on a complete Riemannian manifold of bounded curvature under perturbations of the metric. The perturbations that we consider are such that its covariant derivatives up to some order decay with some rate in the geodesic distance from a fixed point. Especially we impose no conditions on the injectivity radius. One of the main results are conditions on the rate of decay, depending on geometric properties of the underlying manifold, that guarantee the existence and completeness of the wave operators.
We define the distance between edges of graphs and study the coarse Ricci curvature on edges. We consider the Laplacian on edges based on the Jost-Horak's definition of the Laplacian on simplicial complexes. As one of our main results, we obtain an estimate of the first non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian by the Ricci curvature for a regular graph.
We find an explicit expression for the zeta-regularized determinant of (the Friedrichs extension) of the Laplacian on a compact Riemann surface of genus one with conformal metric of curvature $1$ having a single conical singularity of angle $4π$.
We shall prove that under some volume growth condition, the essential spectrum of the Laplacian contains the interval $[(n-1)^2K/4, \infty)$ if an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold has an end and the average of the part of the Ricci curvature on the end which lies below a nonpositive constant $(n-1)K$ converges to zero at infinity.
This paper discusses the question whether the discrete spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator is infinite or finite. The borderline-behavior of the curvatures for this problem will be completely determined.
We obtain a fundamental gap estimate for classes of bounded domains with quantitative control on the boundary in a complete manifold with integral bounds on the negative part of the Ricci curvature. This extends the result of \cite{Oden-Sung-Wang99} to $L^p$-Ricci curvature assumptions, $p>n/2$. To achieve our result, it is shown that the domains under consideration are John domains, what enables us to obtain an estimate on the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue, which is of independent interest.
The goal of this paper is manyfold. Firstly, we want to give a short introduction to the Bochner Laplacian and explain why it acts locally as a magnetic Laplacian. Secondly, given a confining magnetic field, we use Agmon-like estimates to reduce its spectral study to magnetic Laplacians, in the semiclassical limit. Finally, we use this to translate already-known spectral asymptotics for the magnetic Laplacian to the Bochner Laplacian.
We prove that in Riemannian manifolds the $k$-th Steklov eigenvalue on a domain and the square root of the $k$-th Laplacian eigenvalue on its boundary can be mutually controlled in terms of the maximum principal curvature of the boundary under sectional curvature conditions. As an application, we derive a Weyl-type upper bound for Steklov eigenvalues. A Pohozaev-type identity for harmonic functions on the domain and the min-max variational characterization of both eigenvalues are important ingredients.
We determine accurate asymptotics for the low-lying eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian when the Robin parameter goes to $-\infty$. The two first terms in the expansion have been obtained by K. Pankrashkin in the $2D$-case and by K. Pankrashkin and N. Popoff in higher dimensions. The asymptotics display the influence of the scalar curvature and the splitting between every two consecutive eigenvalues. The analysis is based on the approach developed by Fournais-Helffer for the semi-classical magnetic Laplacian. We also propose a WKB construction as a candidate for the ground state energy.
We establish lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a closed Kähler manifold in terms of dimension, diameter, and lower bounds of holomorphic sectional curvature and orthogonal Ricci curvature. On compact Kähler manifolds with boundary, we prove lower bounds for the first nonzero Neumann or Dirichlet eigenvalue in terms of geometric data. Our results are Kähler analogues of well-known results for Riemannian manifolds.
We study the eigenvalues of the connection Laplacian on a graph with an orthogonal group or unitary group signature. We establish higher order Buser type inequalities, i.e., we provide upper bounds for eigenvalues in terms of Cheeger constants in the case of nonnegative Ricci curvature. In this process, we discuss the concepts of Cheeger type constants and a discrete Ricci curvature for connection Laplacians and study their properties systematically. The Cheeger constants are defined as mixtures of the expansion rate of the underlying graph and the frustration index of the signature. The discr…
We study the eigenvalue problem for the $p$-Laplacian on Kähler manifolds. Our first result is a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on compact Kähler manifolds in terms of dimension, diameter, and lower bounds of holomorphic sectional curvature and orthogonal Ricci curvature for $p\in (1, 2]$. Our second result is a sharp lower bound for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on compact Kähler manifolds with smooth boundary for $p\in (1, \infty)$. Our results generalize corresponding results for the Laplace eigenvalues on Kähler manifolds proved in […
We prove sharp criteria on the behavior of radial curvature for the existence of asymptotically flat or hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds with prescribed sets of eigenvalues embedded in the spectrum of the Laplacian. In particular, we construct such manifolds with dense embedded point spectrum and sharp curvature bounds.
We study Riesz means of the eigenvalues of the Heisenberg Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded domains. We obtain an inequality with a sharp leading term and an additional lower order term, improving the result of Hanson and Laptev.
This paper is devoted to interior, i.e. away from the boundary, estimates for eigenfunctions of the fractional Laplacian in an Euclidean domain of $\mathbb R^d$.
We consider the first Robin eigenvalue $ł_p(M,\a)$ for the $p$-Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with nonempty smooth boundary, with $\a \in \R$ being the Robin parameter. Firstly, we prove eigenvalue comparison theorems of Cheng type for $ł_p(M,\a)$. Secondly, when $\a>0$ we establish sharp lower bound of $ł_p(M,\a)$ in terms of dimension, inradius, Ricci curvature lower bound and boundary mean curvature lower bound, via comparison with an associated one-dimensional eigenvalue problem. The lower bound becomes an upper bound when $\a<0$. Our results cover corresponding comparison …
An improvement to a Berezin-Li-Yau type inequality for $(-Δ)^{α/2}|_Ω,$ the fractional Laplacian operators restriced to a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ for $α\in(0,2],$ $d\ge 2,$ is proved.
In this paper we study the self-adjoint Krein-von Neumann realization $A_K$ of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an explicit and self-contained description of the domain of $A_K$ in terms of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary traces, and we establish a Weyl asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues of $A_K$.
We address Lévy-stable stochastic processes in bounded domains, with a focus on a discrimination between inequivalent proposals for what a boundary data-respecting fractional Laplacian (and thence the induced random process) should actually be. Versions considered are: restricted Dirichlet, spectral Dirichlet and regional (censored) fractional Laplacians. The affiliated random processes comprise: killed, reflected and conditioned Lévy flights, in particular those with an infinite life-time. The related concept of quasi-stationary distributions is briefly mentioned.
We study the Robin eigenvalue problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds. Our first result is a comparison theorem for the second Robin eigenvalue on geodesic balls in manifolds whose sectional curvatures are bounded from above. Our second result asserts that geodesic balls in nonpositively curved space forms maximize the second Robin eigenvalue among bounded domains of the same volume.
In this article we prove a generalization of Weyl's criterion for the spectrum of a self-adjoint nonnegative operator on a Hilbert space. We will apply this new criterion in combination with Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov and Cheeger-Colding theory to study the $k$-form essential spectrum over a complete manifold with vanishing curvature at infinity or asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature. In addition, we will apply the generalized Weyl criterion to study the variation of the spectrum of a self-adjoint operator under continuous perturbations of the operator. In the particular case of the Laplacia…
We consider the Laplacian with attractive Robin boundary conditions, \[ Q^Ω_αu=-Δu, \quad \dfrac{\partial u}{\partial n}=αu \text{ on } \partialΩ, \] in a class of bounded smooth domains $Ω\in\mathbb{R}^ν$; here $n$ is the outward unit normal and $α>0$ is a constant. We show that for each $j\in\mathbb{N}$ and $α\to+\infty$, the $j$th eigenvalue $E_j(Q^Ω_α)$ has the asymptotics \[ E_j(Q^Ω_α)=-α^2 -(ν-1)H_\mathrm{max}(Ω)\,α+{\mathcal O}(α^{2/3}), \] where $H_\mathrm{max}(Ω)$ is the maximum mean curvature at $\partial Ω$. The discussion of the reverse Faber-Krahn inequality gives rise to a new ge…
We construct Riemannian manifolds with singular continuous spectrum embedded in the absolutely continuous spectrum of the Laplacian. Our manifolds are asymptotically hyperbolic with sharp curvature bounds.
Let -Δdenote the Dirichlet Laplace operator on a bounded open set in \mathbb{R}^d. We study the sum of the negative eigenvalues of the operator -h^2 Δ- 1 in the semiclassical limit h \to 0+. We give a new proof that yields not only the first term of the asymptotic formula but also the second term involving the surface area of the boundary of the set. The proof is valid under weak smoothness assumptions on the boundary.
In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Rob…
We give a sufficient condition for the essential self-adjointness of a perturbation of the square of the magnetic Laplacian on an infinite weighted graph. The main result is applicable to graphs whose degree function is not necessarily bounded. The result allows perturbations that are not necessarily bounded from below by a constant.
The aim of this paper is twofold: First, we characterize an essentially optimal class of boundary operators $Θ$ which give rise to self-adjoint Laplacians $-Δ_{Θ, Ω}$ in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$ with (nonlocal and local) Robin-type boundary conditions on bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\bbR^n$, $n\in\bbN$, $n\geq 2$. Second, we extend Friedlander's inequalities between Neumann and Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalues to those between nonlocal Robin and Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalues associated with bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω$, following an approach introduced by Filonov for this type of problems.
We compute the scalar curvature of a curved noncommutative 3-torus. To perturb the flat metric, the standard volume form on the noncommutative 3-torus is conformally perturbed and the corresponding perturbed Laplacian is analyzed. Using Connes' pseudodifferential calculus for the noncommutative 3-torus, we explicitly compute the first three terms of the small time heat kernel expansion for the perturbed Laplacian. The third term of the expansion gives a local formula for the scalar curvature. Finally, we show that in the classical limit when the deformation parameters vanish, our formula coinc…
We study the semigroup generated by the hypoelliptic Laplacian on the circle and the maximal bounded holomorphic extension of this semigroup. Using an orthogonal decomposition into harmonic oscillators with complex shifts, we describe the domain of this extension and we show that boundedness in a half-plane corresponds to absolute convergence of the expansion of the semigroup in eigenfunctions. This relies on a novel integral formula for the spectral projections which also gives asymptotics for Laguerre polynomials in a large-parameter regime.
