We regard drift-diffusion equations for semiconductor devices in Lebesgue spaces. To that end we reformulate the (generalized) van Roosbroeck system as an evolution equation for the potentials to the driving forces of the currents of electrons and holes. This evolution equation falls into a class of quasi-linear parabolic systems which allow unique, local in time solution in certain Lebesgue spaces. In particular, it turns out that the divergence of the electron and hole current is an integrable function. Hence, Gauss' theorem applies, and gives the foundation for space discretization of the equations by means of finite volume schemes. Moreover, the strong differentiability of the electron and hole density in time is constitutive for the implicit time discretization scheme. Finite volume discretization of space, and implicit time discretization are accepted custom in engineering and scientific computing.--This investigation puts special emphasis on non-smooth spatial domains, mixed boundary conditions, and heterogeneous material compositions, as required in electronic device simulation.
In this note we study a fractional Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation modeling a semiconductor device. We prove several decay estimates for the Lebesgue and Sobolev norms in one, two and three dimensions. We also provide the first term of the asymptotic expansion as $t\rightarrow\infty$.
The global-in-time existence and uniqueness of bounded weak solutions to a spinorial matrix drift-diffusion model for semiconductors is proved. Developing the electron density matrix in the Pauli basis, the coefficients (charge density and spin-vector density) satisfy a parabolic $4\times 4$ cross-diffusion system. The key idea of the existence proof is to work with different variables: the spin-up and spin-down densities as well as the parallel and perpendicular components of the spin-vector density with respect to the magnetization. In these variables, the diffusion matrix becomes diagonal. …
Motivated by the critical dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation, we prove that drift-diffusion equations with L^2 initial data and minimal assumptions on the drift are locally Holder continuous. As an application we show that solutions of the quasi-geostrophic equation with initial L^2 data and critical diffusion (-Δ)^{1/2}, are locally smooth for any space dimension.
We show that there exist solutions of drift-diffusion equations in two dimensions with divergence-free super-critical drifts, that become discontinuous in finite time. We consider classical as well as fractional diffusion. However, in the case of classical diffusion and time-independent drifts we prove that solutions satisfy a modulus of continuity depending only on the local $L^1$ norm of the drift, which is a super-critical quantity.
We investigate the differentiability issue of the drift-diffusion equation with nonlocal Lévy-type diffusion at either supercritical or critical type cases. Under the suitable conditions on the drift velocity and the forcing term in terms of the spatial Hölder regularity, we prove that the vanishing viscosity solution is differentiable with some Hölder continuous derivatives for any positive time.
In this paper we establish the uniqueness of a solution to a stationary convection-diffusion equation in divergence form with an exponentially summable generalized divergence-free drift.
We prove global existence of strong solutions to the drift-diffusion-Maxwell system in two space dimension. We also provide an exponential growth estimate for the $H^1$ norm of the solution.
We prove an existence result for nonlinear diffusion equations in the presence of a nonlocal density-dependent drift which is not necessarily potential. The proof is constructive and based on the Helmholtz decomposition of the drift and a splitting scheme. The splitting scheme combines transport steps by the divergence-free part of the drift and semi-implicit minimization steps à la Jordan-Kinderlherer-Otto to deal with the potential part.
We prove global Sobolev regularity and pointwise upper bounds for the gradient of transition densities associated with second order differential operators in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with unbounded diffusion, drift and potential terms.
This paper focuses on a drift-diffusion system subjected to boundedly non dissipative Robin boundary conditions. A general existence result with large initial conditions is established by using suitable L1, L2 and trace estimates. Finally, two examples coming from the corrosion and the self-gravitation model are analyzed.
We consider an equation with drift and either critical or supercritical fractional diffusion. Under a regularity assumption for the vector field that is marginally stronger than what is required for Holder continuity of the solutions, we prove that the solution becomes immediately differentiable with Holder continuous derivatives. Therefore, the solutions to the equation are classical.
The initial-value problem for the drift-diffusion equation arising from the model of semiconductor device simulations is studied. The dissipation on this equation is given by the fractional Laplacian. When the exponent of the fractional Laplacian is large, large-time behavior of solutions is known. However, when the exponent is small, the perturbation methods used in the preceding works would not work. Large-time behavior of solutions to the drift-diffusion equation with small exponent is discussed. Particularly, the asymptotic expansion of solutions with high-order is derived.
In this paper, we consider a drift-diffusion system describing the corrosion of an iron based alloy in a nuclear waste repository. In comparison with the classical drift-diffusion system arising in the modeling of semiconductor devices, the originality of the corrosion model lies in the boundary conditions which are of Robin type and induce an additional coupling between the equations. We prove the existence of a weak solution by passing to the limit on a sequence of approximate solutions given by a semi-discretization in time.
This paper considers a class of nonlinear, degenerate drift- diffusion equations. We study well-posedness and regularity properties of the solutions, with the goal to achieve uniform Hölder regularity in terms of $L^p$-bound on the drift vector field. A formal scaling argument yields that the threshold for such estimates is $p=d$, while our estimates are for $p>d+\frac{4}{d+2}$. On the other hand we are able to show by a series of examples that one needs $p>d$ for such estimates, even for divergence free drift.
In this paper we give an affirmative answer to an open question mentioned in [Le Bris and Lions, Comm. Partial Differential Equations 33 (2008), 1272--1317], that is, we prove the well-posedness of the Fokker-Planck type equations with Sobolev diffusion coefficients and BV drift coefficients.
In this paper we address the regularity issues of drift-diffusion equation with nonlocal diffusion, where the diffusion operator is in the realm of stable-type Lévy operator and the velocity field is defined from the considered quantity by a zero-order pseudo-differential operator. Through using the method of nonlocal maximum principle in a unified way, we prove the eventual regularity result in the supercritical type cases and the global regularity at some logarithmically supercritical cases. The feature of these results is that the time after which the solution is smoothly regular in the sup…
We study analytically and numerically a model describing front propagation of a KPP reaction in a fluid flow. The model consists of coupled one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with different drift coefficients. The main rigorous results give lower bounds for the speed of propagation that are linear in the drift coefficient, which agrees very well with the numerical observations. In addition, we find the optimal constant in a functional inequality of independent interest used in the proof.
We are interested in some properties related to the solutions of non-local diffusion equations with divergence free drift. Existence, maximum principle and a positivity principle are proved. In order to study Holder regularity, we apply a method that relies in the Holder-Hardy spaces duality and in the molecular characterisation of local Hardy spaces. In these equations, the diffusion is given by Lévy-type operators with an associated Lévy measure satisfying some upper and lower bounds.
We prove pathwise uniqueness for an abstract stochastic reaction-diffusion equation in Banach spaces. The drift contains a bounded Hölder term; in spite of this, due to the space-time white noise it is possible to prove pathwise uniqueness. The proof is based on a detailed analysis of the associated Kolmogorov equation. The model includes examples not covered by the previous works based on Hilbert spaces or concrete SPDEs.
We introduce a notion of viscosity solutions for a nonlinear degenerate diffusion equation with a drift potential. We show that our notion of solutions coincide with the weak solutions defined via integration by parts. As an application of the viscosity solutions theory, we show that the free boundary uniformly converges to the equilibrium as time grows. In the case of a convex potential, an exponential rate of free boundary convergence is obtained.
The relaxation-time limit from the Quantum-Navier-Stokes-Poisson system to the quantum drift-diffusion equation is performed in the framework of finite energy weak solutions. No assumptions on the limiting solution are made. The proof exploits the suitably scaled a priori bounds inferred by the energy and BD entropy estimates. Moreover, it is shown how from those estimates the Fisher entropy and free energy estimates associated to the diffusive evolution are recovered in the limit. As a byproduct, our main result also provides an alternative proof for the existence of finite energy weak soluti…
This paper is devoted to existence and uniqueness results for classes of nonlinear diffusion equations (or systems) which may be viewed as regular perturbations of Wasserstein gradient flows. First, in the case. where the drift is a gradient (in the physical space), we obtain existence by a semi-implicit Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme. Then, in the nonpotential case, we derive existence from a regularization procedure and parabolic energy estimates. We also address the uniqueness issue by a displacement convexity argument.
The self-similar asymptotics for solutions to the drift-diffusion equation with fractional dissipation, coupled to the Poisson equation, is analyzed in the whole space. It is shown that in the subcritical and supercritical cases, the solutions converge to the fractional heat kernel with algebraic rate. The proof is based on the entropy method and leads to a decay rate in the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm. The technique is applied to other semilinear equations with fractional dissipation.
We provide several regularity results for non-homogeneous drift-diffusion equations with applications to general dissipative SQG. Our results unify in a rather simple way several previously known results. We build the estimates on an algebraic identity (for the refined energy argument) which relates any integral operator with pure powers of the laplacian.
This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behaviors of the minimal speed of propagation of pulsating traveling fronts solving the Fisher-KPP reaction-advection-diffusion equation within either a large drift, a mixture of large drift and small reaction, or a mixture of large drift and large diffusion. We consider a periodic heterogenous framework and we use the formula of Berestycki, Hamel and Nadirashvili \cite{bhn2} for the minimal speed of propagation to prove the asymptotics in any space dimension $N.$ We express the limits as the maxima of certain variational quantities over the…
We study the global existence of solutions to a one-dimensional drift-diffusion equation with logistic term, generalizing the classical parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel aggregation equation arising in mathematical biology. In particular, we prove that there exists a global weak solution, if the order of the fractional diffusion $α\in (1-c_1, 2]$, where $c_1>0$ is an explicit constant depending on the physical parameters present in the problem (chemosensitivity and strength of logistic damping). Furthermore, in the range $1-c_2<α\leq 2$ with $0<c_2<c_1$, the solution is globally smooth. Let us e…
In this work, we consider a one-dimensional It{ô} diffusion process X t with possibly nonlinear drift and diffusion coefficients. We show that, when the diffusion coefficient is known, the drift coefficient is uniquely determined by an observation of the expectation of the process during a small time interval, and starting from values X 0 in a given subset of R. With the same type of observation, and given the drift coefficient, we also show that the diffusion coefficient is uniquely determined. When both coefficients are unknown, we show that they are simultaneously uniquely determined by the…

In this paper, we study local uniform continuity of nonnegative weak solutions to degenerate diffusion-drift equations in the form \[ u_{t} = Δu^{m} + \nabla\cdot \left( B (x,t) \, u\right), \quad \text{for } m \geq 1 \] assuming a vector field $B \in L^{p}_t L^{q}_{x}$. Regarding local Hölder continuity, we provide a sharp condition on $p$ and $q$, which is referred to as the subcritical region. In the critical region, the divergence-free condition is essential to providing uniform continuity which depends on the modulus continuity of $B$.
A system of drift-diffusion equations with electric field under Dirichlet boundary conditions is analyzed. The system of strongly coupled parabolic equations for particle density and spin density vector describes the spin-polarized semi-classical electron transport in ferromagnetic semiconductors. The presence of a nonconstant and nonsmooth magnetization vector, solution of the Landau-Lifshitz equation, causes the diffusion matrix to be dependent from space and time and to have in general poor regularity properties, thus making the analysis challenging. To partially overcome the analytical dif…
We study the heat kernel of the supercritical fractional diffusion equation with the drift in the critical Hölder space. We show that such a drift can have point irregularities strong enough to make the heat kernel vanish at a point for all $t>0$.
We study a class of nonlocal-diffusion equations with drifts, and derive a priori $Φ$-Hölder estimate for the solutions by using a purely probabilistic argument, where $Φ$ is an intrinsic scaling function for the equation.
We establish the well-posedness of stochastic differential equations possessing degenerate diffusions and singular drifts. We prove that SDEs defined on the homogeneous Carnot group, whose hypoelliptic diffusion part is given by the horizontal Brownian motion, admit a unique strong solution for a large class of singular drifts. It considerably generalizes the classical well-posedness results of singular SDEs with non-degenerate diffusions. It also provides an intermediate result between the Cauchy-Lipschitz theorem in ordinary differential equations and the result proved by Krylov and Röckner …
We study the quasi-neutral limit in an optimal semiconductor design problem constrained by a nonlinear, nonlocal Poisson equation modelling the drift diffusion equations in thermal equilibrium. While a broad knowledge on the asymptotic links between the different models in the semiconductor model hierarchy exists, there are so far no results on the corresponding optimization problems available. Using a variational approach we end up with a bi-level optimization problem, which is thoroughly analysed. Further, we exploit the concept of Gamma-convergence to perform the quasi-neutral limit for the…
In this work we investigate the well-posedness for difussion equations associated to subelliptic pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups. The diffusion by strongly elliptic operators is considered as a special case and in particular the fractional diffusion with respect to the Laplacian. The general case is studied within the Hörmander classes associated to a sub-Riemannian structure on the group (encoded by a Hörmander system of vector fields). Applications to diffusion equations for fractional sub-Laplacians, fractional powers of more general subelliptic operators, and the corres…
The dynamics of a reaction-diffusion-advection benthic-drift population model that links changes in the flow regime and habitat availability with population dynamics is studied. In the model, the stream is divided into drift zone and benthic zone, and the population is divided into two interacting compartments, individuals residing in the benthic zone and individuals dispersing in the drift zone. The benthic population growth is assumed to be of strong Allee effect type. The influence of flow speed and individual transfer rates between zones on the population persistence and extinction is cons…
This paper is devoted to the investigation of inverse problems related to stationary drift-diffusion equations modeling semiconductor devices. In this context we analyze several identification problems corresponding to different types of measurements, where the parameter to be reconstructed is an inhomogeneity in the PDE model (doping profile). For a particular type of measurement (related to the voltage-current map) we consider special cases of drift-diffusion equations, where the inverse problems reduces to a classical inverse conductivity problem. A numerical experiment is presented for one…
We study evolution equations of drift-diffusion type when various parameters are random. Motivated by applications in pedestrian dynamics, we focus on the case when the total mass is, due to boundary or reaction terms, not conserved. After providing existence and stability for the deterministic problem, we consider uncertainty in the data. Instead of a sensitivity analysis we propose to measure functionals of the solution, so-called quantities of interest (QoI), by involving scalarizing statistics. For these summarizing statistics we provide probabilistic continuity results.
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of one dimensional stochastic differential equations and Langevin equations in periodic backgrounds with zero average. We prove that in several such models, there is generically a non vanishing asymptotic velocity, despite of the fact that the average of the background is zero.
We consider the problem of quantum and stochastic confinement for drift-diffusion equations on domains $ Ω\subset \mathbb R^d$. We obtain various sufficient conditions on the behavior of the coefficients near the boundary of $Ω$ which ensure the essential self-adjointness or stochastic completeness of the symmetric form of the drift-diffusion operator, $-\frac{1}{ρ_\infty}\,\nabla\cdot ρ_\infty\mathbb D\nabla$. The proofs are based on the method developed in [29] for quantum confinement on bounded domains in $\mathbb R^d$. In particular for stochastic confinement we combine the Liouville prope…
We consider the problem of essential self-adjointness of the drift-diffusion operator $H=-\frac{1}ρ\nabla\cdot ρ\mathbb D\nabla +V$ on domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ with $\mathcal{C}^2$-boundary $\partial Ω$ and for large classes of coefficients $ρ,\; \mathbb{D}$ and $V$. We give criteria showing how the behavior as $x \rightarrow \partial Ω$ of these coefficients balances to ensure essential self-adjointness of $H$. On the way we prove a weak anisotropic Hardy inequality which is of independent interest.
In this paper, we consider an unipolar degenerated drift-diffusion system where the relation between the concentration of the charged species $c$ and the chemical potential $h$ is $h(c)=\log \frac{c}{1-c}$. We design four different finite volume schemes based on four different formulations of the fluxes. We provide a stability analysis and existence results for the four schemes. The convergence proof with respect to the discretization parameters is established for two of them. Numerical experiments illustrate the behaviour of the different schemes.
