Let X be a path connected, compact metric space and let A be a unital separable simple nuclear Z-stable real rank zero C*-algebra. We classify all the unital *-embeddings (up to approximate unitary equivalence) of C(X) into A. Specifically, we provide an existence and a uniqueness theorem for unital *-embeddings from C(X) into A.
We construct a unital pre-C*-algebra $A_0$ which is stably finite, in the sense that every left invertible square matrix over $A_0$ is right invertible, while the C*-completion of $A_0$ contains a non-unitary isometry, and so it is infinite.
We define and study large and stably large subalgebras of simple unital C*-algebras. The basic example is the orbit breaking subalgebra of a crossed product by Z, as follows. Let X be an infinite compact metric space, let h be a minimal homeomorphism of X, and let Y be a closed subset of X. Let u be the standard unitary in C* (Z, X, h). The Y-orbit breaking subalgebra is the subalgebra of C* (Z, X, h) generated by C (X) and all elements f u for f in C (X) such that f vanishes on Y. If intersects each orbit of h at most once, then the Y-orbit breaking subalgebra is large in C* (Z, X, h). Large …
We give a necessary and sufficient criterion when a normal CP-map on a von Neumann algebra admits a restriction to a maximal commutative subalgebra. We apply this result to give a far reaching generalization of Rebolledo's sufficient criterion for the Lindblad generator of a Markov semigroup on B(G).
We show that a $C^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ which is stably isomorphic to a unital graph $C^*$-algebra, is isomorphic to a graph $C^*$-algebra if and only if it admits an approximate unit of projections. As a consequence, a hereditary $C^*$-subalgebra of a unital real rank zero graph $C^*$-algebra is isomorphic to a graph $C^*$-algebra. Furthermore, if a $C^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ admits an approximate unit of projections, then its minimal unitization is isomorphic to a graph $C^*$-algebra if and only if $\mathfrak{A}$ is stably isomorphic to a unital graph $C^*$-algebra.
We solve, mainly by counterexamples, many natural questions regarding maximal commutative subalgebras invariant under CP-maps or semigroups of CP-maps on a von Neumann algebra. In particular, we discuss the structure of the generators of norm continuous semigroups on B(G) leaving a maximal commutative subalgebra invariant and show that there exists Markov CP-semigroups on M_d without invariant maximal commutative subalgebras for any d>2.
We construct Cartan subalgebras in all classifiable stably finite C*-algebras. Together with known constructions of Cartan subalgebras in all UCT Kirchberg algebras, this shows that every classifiable simple C*-algebra has a Cartan subalgebra.
Let $A$ be a simple infinite dimensional stably finite unital C*-algebra, and let $B$ be a centrally large subalgebra of $A$. We prove that if $A$ is tracially ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing if and only if $B$ is tracially ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing. If $A$ and $B$ are also separable and nuclear, we prove that $A$ is ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing if and only if $B$ is ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing.
We aim to characterize the category of injective *-homomorphisms between commutative C*-subalgebras of a given C*-algebra A. We reduce this problem to finding a weakly terminal commutative subalgebra of A, and solve the latter for various C*-algebras, including all commutative ones and all type I von Neumann algebras. This addresses a natural generalization of the Mackey-Piron programme: which lattices are those of closed subspaces of Hilbert space? We also discuss the way this categorified generalization differs from the original question.
In this paper we generalize classical results regarding minimal realizations of non-commutative (nc) rational functions using nc Fornasini-Marchesini realizations which are centred at an arbitrary matrix point. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a minimal realization for every nc rational function, centred at an arbitrary matrix point in its domain of regularity. Moreover, we show that using this realization we can evaluate the function on all of its domain (of matrices of all sizes) and also with respect to any stably finite algebra. As a corollary we obtain a new proof of the theorem b…
An open question, raised independently by several authors, asks if a closed amenable subalgebra of ${\mathcal B}({\mathcal H})$ must be similar to an amenable C*-algebra; the question remains open even for singly-generated algebras. In this article we show that any closed, commutative, operator amenable subalgebra of a finite von Neumann algebra ${\mathcal M}$ is similar to a commutative C*-subalgebra of ${\mathcal M}$, with the similarity implemented by an element of ${\mathcal M}$. Our proof makes use of the algebra of measurable operators affiliated to ${\mathcal M}$.
A C*-algebra is determined to a great extent by the partial order of its commutative C*-algebras. We study order-theoretic properties of this dcpo. Many properties coincide: the dcpo is, equivalently, algebraic, continuous, meet-continuous, atomistic, quasi-algebraic, or quasi-continuous, if and only if the C*-algebra is scattered. For C*-algebras with enough projections, these properties are equivalent to finite-dimensionality. Approximately finite-dimensional elements of the dcpo correspond to Boolean subalgebras of the projections of the C*-algebra, which determine the projections up to iso…
We consider the functor C that to a unital C*-algebra A assigns the partial order set C(A) of its commutative C*-subalgebras ordered by inclusion. We investigate how some C*-algebraic properties translate under the action of C to order-theoretical properties. In particular, we show that A is finite dimensional if and only C(A) satisfies certain chain conditions. We eventually show that if A and B are C*-algebras such that A is finite dimensional and C(A) and C(B) are order isomorphic, then A and B must be *-isomorphic.
By defining tracial states on a non-commutative analogue of a path space, we construct Markov dilations for a class of conservative completely Markov semigroups on finite von Neumann algebras. This class includes all symmetric semigroups. For well chosen semigroups (for instance with generator any divergence form operator associated to a derivation valued in the coarse correspondence) those dilations give rise to stationary solutions of certain free SDEs previously considered by D. Shlyakhtenko. Among applications, we prove a non-commutative Talagrand inequality for non-microstates free entrop…
Let A and B be C*-algebras whose quotients are all RFD, and let C be a central C*-subalgebra in both A and B. We prove that the full amalgamated free product of A and B over C is then RFD. This generalizes Korchagin's result that amalgamated free products of commutative C*-algebras are RFD. When applied to the case of a trivial amalgam, our methods recover the result of Exel-Loring for separable C*-algebras. As corollaries to our theorem, we give sufficient conditions for amalgamated free products of maximally almost periodic (MAP) groups to have RFD C*-algebras and hence to be MAP.
For a compact Hausdorff space $X$, the space $SC(X\times X)$ of separately continuous complex valued functions on $X$ can be viewed as a $C^*$-subalgebra of $C(X)^{**}\overline\otimes C(X)^{**}$, namely those elements which slice into $C(X)$. The analogous definition for a non-commutative $C^*$-algebra does not necessarily give an algebra, but we show that there is always a greatest $C^*$-subalgebra. This thus gives a non-commutative notion of separate continuity. The tools involved are multiplier algebras and row/column spaces, familiar from the theory of Operator Spaces. We make some study o…
Richard Kadison showed that not every commutative von Neumann subalgebra of a factor von Neumann algebra is equal to its relative double commutant. We prove that every commutative C*-subalgebra of a centrally prime C*-algebra $B$ equals its relative approximate double commutant. If $B$ is a von Neumann algebra, there is a related distance formula.
In this paper, for a C*-Algebra A with M = M(A) an AW*-algebra, or equivalently, for an essential, norm-closed, two-sided ideal A of an AW*-algebra M, we investigate the strict approximability of the elements of M from commutative C*- subalgebras of A. In the relevant case of the norm-closed linear span A of all finite projections in a semi-finite AW*-algebra M we shall give a complete description of the strict closure in M of any maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebra (masa) of A. We shall see that the situation is completely different for discrete respectively continuous M : in the discrete…

A well-known theorem of Blackadar and Handelman states that every unital stably finite C*-algebra has a bounded quasitrace. Rather strong generalizations of stable finiteness to the non-unital case can be obtained by either requiring the multiplier algebra to be stably finite, or alternatively requiring it to be at least stably not properly infinite. This paper deals with the question whether the Blackadar-Handelman result can be extended to the non-unital case with respect to these generalizations of stable finiteness. For suitably well-behaved C*-algebras there is a positive result, but none…
In this paper we use the description of free group factors as the von Neumann algebras of Berezin's deformation of the upper half-plane, modulo PSL$(2,{\Bbb Z})$. The derivative, in the deformation parameter, of the product in the corresponding algebras, is a positive Hochschild 2-cocycle, defined on a dense subalgebra. By analyzing the structure of the cocycle we prove that there is a generator $\cal L$ for a quantum dynamical semigroup that implements the cocycle on a strongly dense subalgebra. For $x$ in the dense subalgebra, ${\cal L}(x)$ is the (diffusion) operator $$ {\cal L}(x)=Λ(x)-(1/…
We study the uniform property $Γ$ for separable simple $C^*$-algebras which have quasitraces and may not be exact. We show that a stably finite separable simple $C^*$-algebra $A$ with strict comparison and uniform property $Γ$ has tracial approximate oscillation zero and stable rank one. Moreover in this case, its hereditary $C^*$-subalgebras also have a version of uniform property $Γ.$ If a separable non-elementary simple amenable $C^*$-algebra $A$ with strict comparison has this hereditary uniform property $Γ,$ then $A$ is ${\cal Z}$-stable.
We extend work of the first author concering relative double commutants and approximate double commutants of unital subalgebras of unital C*-algebras, including metric versions involving distance estimates. We prove metric results for AH subalgebras of von Neumann algebras or AF subalgebras of primitive C*-algebras. We prove other general results, including some for nonselfadjoint commutative subalgebras, using C*-algebraic versions of the Stone-Weierstrass and Bishop-Stone-Weierstrass theorems.
Let $\mathcal A\subseteq \mat$ be a unital $*$-subalgebra of the algebra $\mat$ of all $n\times n$ complex matrices and let $B$ be an hermitian matrix. Let $\U_n(B)$ denote the unitary orbit of $B$ in $\mat$ and let $\mathcal E_\mathcal A$ denote the trace preserving conditional expectation onto $\mathcal A$. We give an spectral characterization of the set $$ \mathcal E_\mathcal A(\U_n(B))=\{\mathcal E_\mathcal A(U^* B U): U\in \mat,\ \text{unitary matrix}\}.$$ We obtain a similar result for the contractive orbit of a positive semi-definite matrix $B$. We then use these results to extend the n…
Let $A$ be a non-commutative, non-unital $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebra. Given a set of commuting positive elements in the corona algebra $Q(A)$, we study some obstructions to the existence of a commutative lifting of such set to the multiplier algebra $M(A)$. Our focus are the obstructions caused by the size of the collection we want to lift. It is known that no obstacles show up when lifting a countable family of commuting projections, or of pairwise orthogonal positive elements. However, this is not the case for larger collections. We prove in fact that for every primitive, non-unital, $σ$-unita…
A C*-algebra $A$ is C*-reflexive if any countably generated Hilbert C*-module $M$ over $A$ is C*-reflexive, i.e. the second dual module $M''$ coincides with $M$. We show that a commutative C*-algebra $A$ is C*-reflexive if and only if for any sequence $I_k$ of disjoint non-zero C*-subalgebras, the canonical inclusion $\oplus_k I_k\subset A$ doesn't extend to an inclusion of $\prod_k I_k$.
We characterize braided commutative Yetter-Drinfeld $C^*$-algebras over weak Hopf $C^*$-algebras in categorical terms. Using this, we then study quotient type coideal subalgebras of a given weak Hopf $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal G$ and coideal subalgebras invariant with respect to the adjoint action of $\mathcal G$. Finally, as an example, we explicitly describe quotient type coideal subalgebras of the weak Hopf $C^*$-algebras associated with Tambara-Yamagami categories.
Let $E=E(0,\infty)$ be a symmetric function space and $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ be a symmetric operator space associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful normal semifinite trace. Our main result identifies the class of spaces $E$ for which every derivation $δ:\mathcal{A}\to E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ is necessarily inner for each $C^*$-subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ in the class of all semifinite von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}$ as those with the Levi property.
We construct C*-diagonals with connected spectra in all classifiable stably finite C*-algebras which are unital or stably projectionless with continuous scale. For classifiable stably finite C*-algebras with torsion-free $K_0$ and trivial $K_1$, we further determine the spectra of the C*-diagonals up to homeomorphism. In the unital case, the underlying space turns out to be the Menger curve. In the stably projectionless case, the space is obtained by removing a non-locally-separating copy of the Cantor space from the Menger curve. We show that each of our classifiable C*-algebras has continuum…
A subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ of a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{M}$ is logmodular (resp. has factorization) if the set $\{a^*a; a\text{ is invertible with }a,a^{-1}\in\mathcal{A}\}$ is dense in (resp. equal to) the set of all positive and invertible elements of $\mathcal{M}$. There are large classes of well studied algebras, both in commutative and non-commutative settings, which are known to be logmodular. In this paper, we show that the lattice of projections in a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ whose ranges are invariant under a logmodular algebra in $\mathcal{M}$, is a commutative subspace latti…
The subject of this thesis is Galois correspondence for von Neumann algebras and its interplay with non-commutative probability theory. After a brief introduction to representation theory for compact groups, in particular to Peter-Weyl theorem, and to operator algebras, including von Neumann algebras, automorphism groups, crossed products and decomposition theory, we formulate first steps of a non-commutative version of probability theory and introduce non-abelian analogues of stochastic processes and martingales. The central objects are a von Neumann algebra $\Ma$ and a compact group $\Gr$ ac…
For an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$, and the Steinberg algebra $A_R(G)$ with coefficients in the commutative ring $R$ with unit, we describe the centraliser of subalgebra $A_R(U)$ with $U$ an open closed invariant subset of unit space of $G$. In particular, we obtain that the algebra of the interior of the isotropy is indeed the centraliser of the diagonal subalgebra of Steinberg algebra. This will unify several results in the literature and the corresponding results for Leavitt path algebras follow.
We prove the uniqueness of the group measure space Cartan subalgebra in crossed products A \rtimes Γcovering certain cases where Γis an amalgamated free product over a non-amenable subgroup. In combination with Kida's work we deduce that if Σ< SL(3,\Z) denotes the subgroup of matrices g with g_31 = g_32 = 0, then any free ergodic probability measure preserving action of Γ= SL(3,\Z) *_ΣSL(3,\Z) is stably W*-superrigid. In the second part we settle a technical issue about the unitary conjugacy of group measure space Cartan subalgebras.
A subset $\mathcal X$ of a C*-algebra $\mathcal A$ is called irredundant if no $A\in \mathcal X$ belongs to the C*-subalgebra of $\mathcal A$ generated by $\mathcal X\setminus \{A\}$. Separable C*-algebras cannot have uncountable irredundant sets and all members of many classes of nonseparable C*-algebras, e.g., infinite dimensional von Neumann algebras have irredundant sets of cardinality continuum. There exists a considerable literature showing that the question whether every AF commutative nonseparable C*-algebra has an uncountable irredundant set is sensitive to additional set-theoretic ax…
