We study Stanley decompositions and show that Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decompositions implies his conjecture on partitionable Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. We also prove these conjectures for all Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideals of codimension 2 and all Gorenstein monomial ideals of codimension 3.
A long-standing conjecture of Stanley states that every Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex is partitionable. We disprove the conjecture by constructing an explicit counterexample. Due to a result of Herzog, Jahan and Yassemi, our construction also disproves the conjecture that the Stanley depth of a monomial ideal is always at least its depth.
In a recent paper, Duval, Goeckner, Klivans and Martin disproved the longstanding conjecture by Stanley, that every Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex is partitionable. We construct counterexamples to this conjecture that are even \emph{balanced}, i.e., their underlying graph has a minimal coloring. This answers a question by Duval et al. in the negative.
When a cone is added to a simplicial complex $Δ$ over one of its faces, we investigate the relation between the arithmetical ranks of the Stanley-Reisner ideals of the original simplicial complex and the new simplicial complex $Δ'$. In particular, we show that the arithmetical rank of the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Δ'$ equals the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of $Δ'$ if the corresponding equality holds for $Δ$.
Let $Δ$ be a one-dimensional simplicial complex. Let $I_Δ$ be the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Δ$. We prove that for all $s \ge 1$ and all intermediate ideals $J$ generated by $I_Δ^s$ and some minimal generators of $I_Δ^{(s)}$, we have $${\rm reg} J = {\rm reg} I_Δ^s = {\rm reg} I_Δ^{(s)}.$$
We study the symbolic powers of the Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_{B_n}$ of a bipyramid $B_n$ over a $n-$gon $Q_n$. Using a combinatorial approach, based on analysis of subtrees in $Q_n$ we compute the Waldschmidt constant of $I_{B_n}$.
A triangulation of a polygon has an associated Stanley-Reisner ideal. We obtain a full algebraic and combinatorial understanding of these ideals, and describe their separated models. More generally we do this for stacked simplicial complexes, in particular for stacked polytopes.
Let $K$ be a field, $R=K[X_1, ..., X_n]$ be the polynomial ring and $J \subsetneq I$ two monomial ideals in $R$. In this paper we show that $\mathrm{sdepth}\ {I/J} - \mathrm{depth}\ {I/J} = \mathrm{sdepth}\ {I^p/J^p}-\mathrm{depth}\ {I^p/J^p}$, where $\mathrm{sdepth}\ I/J$ denotes the Stanley depth and $I^p$ denotes the polarization. This solves a conjecture by Herzog and reduces the famous Stanley conjecture (for modules of the form $I/J$) to the squarefree case. As a consequence, the Stanley conjecture for algebras of the form $R/I$ and the well-known combinatorial conjecture that every Cohe…
We consider the face ideal associated to a line-type simplicial complex. We compute the \texttt{depth} and the \texttt{sdepth} for its quotient ring. In particular, the facet ideal and its quotient ring satisfy the Stanley inequality.
We study the regularity and the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a $k$-decomposable simplicial complex and explain these invariants with a recursive formula. To this aim, the graded Betti numbers of $k$-decomposable monomial ideals which is the dual concept for $k$-decomposable simplicial complexes are studied and an inductive formula for the Betti numbers is given. As a corollary, for a chordal clutter $\mathcal{H}$, an upper bound for $reg(I(\mathcal{H}))$ is given in terms of the regularities of edge ideals of some chordal clutters which are minors of $\mathcal{H}$.
For a simplicial complex $Δ$, we introduce a simplicial complex attached to $Δ$, called the expansion of $Δ$, which is a natural generalization of the notion of expansion in graph theory. We are interested in knowing how the properties of a simplicial complex and its Stanley-Reisner ring relate to those of its expansions. It is shown that taking expansion preserves vertex decomposable and shellable properties and in some cases Cohen-Macaulayness. Also it is proved that some homological invariants of Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex relate to those invariants in the Stanley-Reisner …
We give a description of a new Macaulay2 package called SimplicialPosets. This package provides functions for working with simplicial posets and calculating their generalized Stanley-Reisner ideals. For practical purposes, we also introduce of a new random model for a class of simplicial posets which generalizes existing models for random simplicial complexes such as the Kahle model.
We show that for proving the Stanley conjecture, it is sufficient to consider a very special class of monomial ideals. These ideals (or rather their lcm lattices) are in bijection with the simplicial spanning trees of skeletons of a simplex. We apply this result to verify the Stanley conjecture for quotients of monomial ideals with up to six generators. For seven generators we obtain a partial result.
We call a simplicial complex algebraically rigid if its Stanley-Reisner ring admits no nontrivial infinitesimal deformations, and call it inseparable if does not allow any deformation to other simplicial complexes. Algebraically rigid simplicial complexes are inseparable. In this paper we study inseparability and rigidity of Stanley-Reisner rings, and apply the general theory to letterplace ideals as well as to edge ideals of graphs. Classes of algebraically rigid simplicial complexes and graphs are identified.
We show that the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the one-dimensional simplicial complex whose diagram is an $n$-gon is always a set-theoretic complete intersection in any positive characteristic.
A finite poset $P$ is called "simplicial", if it has the smallest element $\hat{0}$, and every interval $[\hat{0}, x]$ is a boolean algebra. The face poset of a simplicial complex is a typical example. Generalizing the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex, Stanley assigned the graded ring $A_P$ to $P$. This ring has been studied from both combinatorial and topological perspective. In this paper, we will give a concise description of a dualizing complex of $A_P$, which has many applications.
The goal of the present paper is the study of some algebraic invariants of Stanley-Reisner rings of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes of dimension $d - 1$. We prove that the inequality $d \leq \mathrm{reg}(Δ) \cdot \mathrm{type}(Δ)$ holds for any $(d-1)$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex $Δ$ satisfying $Δ=\mathrm{core}(Δ)$, where $\mathrm{reg}(Δ)$ (resp. $\mathrm{type}(Δ)$) denotes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity (resp. Cohen-Macaulay type) of the Stanley-Reisner ring $\Bbbk[Δ]$. Moreover, for any given integers $d,r,t$ satisfying $r,t \geq 2$ and $r \leq d \leq rt$, we constr…
Let $Δ$ be a simplicial complex. We study the expansions of $Δ$ mainly to see how the algebraic and combinatorial properties of $Δ$ and its expansions are related to each other. It is shown that $Δ$ is Cohen-Macaulay, sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum or $k$-decomposable, if and only if an arbitrary expansion of $Δ$ has the same property. Moreover, some homological invariants like the regularity and the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ideals of $Δ$ and those of their expansions are compared.
One of the main open questions in liaison theory is whether every homogeneous Cohen-Macaulay ideal in a polynomial ring is glicci, i.e. if it is in the G-liaison class of a complete intersection. We give an affirmative answer to this question for Stanley-Reisner ideals defined by simplicial complexes that are weakly vertex-decomposable. This class of complexes includes matroid, shifted and Gorenstein complexes respectively. Moreover, we construct a simplicial complex which shows that the property of being glicci depends on the characteristic of the base field. As an application of our methods …
We consider simplicial complexes admitting a free action by an abelian group. Specifically, we establish a refinement of the classic result of Hochster describing the local cohomology modules of the associated Stanley--Reisner ring, demonstrating that the topological structure of the free action extends to the algebraic setting. If the complex in question is also Buchsbaum, this new description allows for a specialization of Schenzel's calculation of the Hilbert series of some of the ring's Artinian reductions. In further application, we generalize to the Buchsbaum case the results of Stanley …
We define and study the notion of a minimal Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. We prove that any Cohen-Macaulay complex is shelled over a minimal one in our sense, and we give sufficient conditions for a complex to be minimal Cohen-Macaulay. We show that many interesting examples of Cohen-Macaulay complexes in combinatorics are minimal, including Rudin's ball, Ziegler's ball, the dunce hat, and recently discovered non-partitionable Cohen-Macaulay complexes. We further provide various ways to construct such complexes.
We show that the ideal generated by the $(n-2)$ minors of a general symmetric $n$ by $n$ matrix has an initial ideal that is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the boundary complex of a simplicial polytope and has the same Betti numbers.
Let $K$ be a field and $I$ a monomial ideal of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$. We show that if either: 1) $I$ is almost complete intersection, 2) $I$ can be generated by less than four monomials; or 3) $I$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a locally complete intersection simplicial complex on $[n]$, then Stanley's conjecture holds for $S/I$.
Let $I\subset K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a zero-dimensional monomial ideal, and $Δ(I)$ be the simplicial complex whose Stanley--Reisner ideal is the polarization of $I$. It follows from a result of Soleyman Jahan that $Δ(I)$ is shellable. We give a new short proof of this fact by providing an explicit shelling. Moreover, we show that $Δ(I)$ is even vertex decomposable. The ideal $L(I)$, which is defined to be the Stanley--Reisner ideal of the Alexander dual of $Δ(I)$, has a linear resolution which is cellular and supported on a regular CW-complex. All powers of $L(I)$ have a linear resolution. We c…
We prove that for m > 2, the m-th symbolic power of a Stanley-Reisner ideal is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the simplicial complex is a matroid. Similarly, the m-th ordinary power is Cohen-Macaulay for some m > 2 if and only if the complex is a complete intersection. These results solve several open questions on the Cohen-Macaulayness of ordinary and symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals. Moreover, they have interesting consequences on the Cohen-Macaulayness of symbolic powers of facet ideals and cover ideals.
This paper studies properties of simplicial complexes for which the m-th symbolic power of the Stanley-Reisner ideal equals to the m-th ordinary power for a given m > 1. The main results are combinatorial characterizations of such complexes in the two-dimensional case. It turns out that there exist only a finite number of complexes with this property and that these complexes can be described completely. As a consequence we are able to determine all complexes for which the m-th ordinary power of the Stanley-Reisner ideal is Cohen-Macaulay for a given m > 1.
We extend the notion of face rings of simplicial complexes and simplicial posets to the case of finite-length (possibly infinite) simplicial posets with a group action. The action on the complex induces an action on the face ring, and we prove that the ring of invariants is isomorphic to the face ring of the quotient simplicial poset under a mild condition on the group action. We also identify a class of actions on simplicial complexes that preserve the homotopical Cohen-Macaulay property under quotients. When the acted-upon poset is the independence complex of a semimatroid, the $h$-polynomia…
Let $Δ$ be a stable simplicial complex on $n$ vertexes. Over an arbitrary base field $K$, the symmetric algebraic shifted complex $Δ^s$ of $Δ$ is defined. It is proved that the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ideals in the polynomial ring $K[x_1,x_2,...,x_n]$ of the symmetric algebraic shifted, exterior algebraic shifted and combinatorial shifted complexes of $Δ$ are equal.
A linear ball is a simplicial complex whose geometric realization is homeomorphic to a ball and whose Stanley--Reisner ring has a linear resolution. It turns out that the Stanley--Reisner ring of the sphere which is the boundary complex of a linear ball satisfies the multiplicity conjecture. A class of shellable spheres arising naturally from commutative algebra whose Stanley--Reisner rings satisfy the multiplicity conjecture will be presented.
In this paper we show that a $k$-shellable simplicial complex is the expansion of a shellable complex. We prove that the face ring of a pure $k$-shellable simplicial complex satisfies the Stanley conjecture. In this way, by applying expansion functor to the face ring of a given pure shellable complex, we construct a large class of rings satisfying the Stanley conjecture. Also, by presenting some characterizations of $k$-shellable graphs, we extend some results due to Castrillón-Cruz, Cruz-Estrada and Van Tuyl-Villareal.
In this note we define a Stanley-Reisner ring for quasi-arithmetic matroids and more general structures. To this end, we define two types of CW complexes associated with a quasi-arithmetic matroid that generalize independence complexes of matroids. Then we use Stanley's construction of Stanley-Reisner rings for simplicial posets.
Given an ascending chain $(I_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ of $\Sym$-invariant squarefree monomial ideals, we study the corresponding chain of Alexander duals $(I_n^\vee)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$. Using a novel combinatorial tool, which we call \emph{avoidance up to symmetry}, we provide an explicit description of the minimal generating set up to symmetry in terms of the original generators. Combining this result with methods from discrete geometry, this enables us to show that the number of orbit generators of $I_n^\vee$ is given by a polynomial in $n$ for sufficiently large $n$. The same is true for the num…
In this paper, we prove that the Stanley--Reisner ideal of any connected simplicial complex of dimension $\ge 2$ that is locally complete intersection is a complete intersection ideal. As an application, we show that the Stanley--Reisner ideal whose powers are Buchsbaum is a complete intersection ideal.
We show that the Golod property of a Stanley-Reisner ring can depend on the characteristic of the base field. More precisely, for every finite set $T$ of prime numbers we construct simplicial complexes $Δ$ and $Γ$, such that $\mathbb{K}[Δ]$ is Golod exactly in the characteristics in $T$ and $\mathbb{K}[Γ]$ is Golod exactly in the characteristics not in $T$. Along the way, we show that a one-dimensional simplicial complex is Golod if and only if it is chordal.
Let $Δ$ be simplicial complex and let $k[Δ]$ denote the Stanley--Reisner ring corresponding to $Δ$. Suppose that $k[Δ]$ has a pure free resolution. Then we describe the Betti numbers and the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicity of $k[Δ]$ in terms of the $h$--vector of $Δ$. As an application, we derive a linear equation system and some inequalities for the components of the $h$--vector of the clique complex of an arbitrary chordal graph. As an other application, we derive a linear equation system and some inequalities for the components of the $h$--vector of Cohen--Macaulay simplicial complexes.
Inspired by recent results of Ein, Lazarsfeld, Erman and Zhou on the non-vanishing of Betti numbers of high Veronese subrings, we describe the behaviour of the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with iterated barycentric or edgewise subdivisions of a given simplicial complex. Our results show that for a simplicial complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ and for $1\leq j\leq d-1$ the number of $0$'s the j-th linear strand of the minimal free resolution of the r-th barycentric or edgewise subdivision is bounded above only in terms of $d$ and $j$ (and independently of $r$).
In this paper, we provide a simple proof for the fact that two simplicial complexes are isomorphic if and only if their associated Stanley-Reisner rings, or their associated facet rings are isomorphic as $K$-algebras. As a consequence, we show that two graphs are isomorphic if and only if their associated edge rings are isomorphic as $K$-algebras. Based on an explicit $K$-algebra isomorphism of two Stanley-Reisner rings, or facet rings or edge rings, we present a fast algorithm to find explicitly the isomorphism of the associated simplicial complexes, or graphs.
Let R be a Stanley-Reisner ring (that is, a reduced monomial ring) with coefficients in a domain k, and K its associated simplicial complex. Also let D_k(R) be the ring of k-linear differential operators on R. We give two different descriptions of the two-sided ideal structure of D_k(R) as being in bijection with certain well-known subcomplexes of K; one based on explicit computation in the Weyl algebra, valid in any characteristic, and one valid in characteristic p based on the Frobenius splitting of R. A result of Traves [Tra99] on the D_k(R)-module structure of R is also given a new proof a…
In this paper, we study Lefschetz properties of Artinian reductions of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial $3$-polytopes. A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is said to be balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. If a simplicial complex is balanced, then its Stanley-Reisner ring has a special system of parameters induced by the coloring. We prove that the Artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a balanced simplicial $3$-polytope with respect to this special system of parameters has the strong Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is not two or three.…
In this short note we give an elementary description of the linear part of the minimal free resolution of a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex $Δ$. Indeed, the differentials in the linear part are simply a compilation of restriction maps in the simplicial cohomology of induced subcomplexes of $Δ$. Along the way, we also show that if a monomial ideal has at least one generator of degree $2$, then the linear strand of its minimal free resolution can be written using only $\pm 1$ coefficients.
In analogy to the skeletons of a simplicial complex and their Stanley--Reisner ideals we introduce the skeletons of an arbitrary monomial ideal $I\subset S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. This allows us to compute the depth of $S/I$ in terms of its skeleton ideals. We apply these techniques to show that Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decompositions of $S/I$ holds provided it holds whenever $S/I$ is Cohen--Macaulay. We also discuss a conjecture of Soleyman-Jahan and show that it suffices to prove his conjecture for monomial ideals with linear resolution.
We have introduced the Janet's algorithm for the Stanley decomposition of a monomial ideal I in a polynomial ring S = K[x_1,...,x_n] and prove that Janet's algorithm gives the squarefree Stanley decomposition of S/I for a squarefree monomial ideal I. We have also shown that the Janet's algorithm gives a partition of a simplicial complex.
We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they on…
In this paper, we study simplicial complexes whose Stanley-Reisner rings are almost Gorenstein and have $a$-invariant zero. We call such a simplicial complex an almost Gorenstein* simplicial complex. To study the almost Gorenstein* property, we introduce a new class of simplicial complexes which we call uniformly Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. A $d$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ is said to be uniformly Cohen-Macaulay if it is Cohen-Macaulay and, for any facet $F$ of $Δ$, the simplicial complex $Δ\setminus\{F\}$ is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension $d$. We investigate fundamental algebraic…
Given a simplicial complex, it is easy to construct a generic deformation of its Stanley-Reisner ideal. The main question under investigation in this paper is how to characterize the simplicial complexes such that their Stanley-Reisner ideals have Cohen-Macaulay generic deformations. Algorithms are presented to construct such deformations for matroid complexes, shifted complexes, and tree complexes.
We review a class of problems on the borders of topology of torus actions, commutative homological algebra and combinatorial geometry, which is currently being investigated by Victor Buchstaber and the author. The text builds on the lectures delivered on the transformation group courses in Osaka City University and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. We start with discussing several well-known results and problems on combinatorial geometry of polytopes and simplicial complexes, and then move gradually towards investigating the combinatorial structures associated with spaces acted on by the toru…

In this paper, we discuss the connected sum K_1#^Z K_2 of simplicial complexes K_1 and K_2, as well as define the notion of a strong connected sum. Geometrically, the connected sum is motivated by Lerman's symplectic cut applied to a toric orbifold, and algebraically, it is motivated by the connected sum of rings introduced by Ananthnarayan-Avramov-Moore. We show that the Stanley-Reisner ring of a connected sum K_1#^Z K_2 is the connected sum of the Stanley-Reisner rings of K_1 and K_2 along the Stanley-Reisner ring of the intersection of K_1 and K_2. The strong connected sum K_1 #^Z K_2 is de…
This paper uses dualities between facet ideal theory and Stanley-Reisner theory to show that the facet ideal of a simplicial tree is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. The proof involves showing that the Alexander dual (or the cover dual, as we call it here) of a simplicial tree is a componentwise linear ideal. We conclude with additional combinatorial properties of simplicial trees.
Unprojection theory aims to analyze and construct complicated commutative rings in terms of simpler ones. Our main result is that, on the algebraic level of Stanley-Reisner rings, stellar subdivisions of non-acyclic Gorenstein simplicial complexes correspond to unprojections of type Kustin-Miller. As an application, we inductively calculate the minimal graded free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to stacked polytopes, recovering results of Terai, Hibi, Herzog and Li Marzi.
This paper has two related parts. The first generalizes Hochster's formula on resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings to a colorful version, applicable to any proper vertex-coloring of a simplicial complex. The second part examines a universal system of parameters for Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes, and more generally, face rings of simplicial posets. These parameters have good properties, including being fixed under symmetries, and detecting depth of the face ring. Moreover, when resolving the face ring over these parameters, the shape is predicted, conjecturally, by the colorful …
We examine virtual resolutions of Stanley-Reisner ideals for a product of projective spaces. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for a simplicial complex to be virtually Cohen-Macaulay (to have a virtual resolution with length equal to its codimension). We also show that all balanced simplicial complexes are virtually Cohen-Macaulay.
Let $Δ$ be a pure simplicial complex and $I_Δ$ its Stanley-Reisner ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. We show that $Δ$ is a matroid (complete intersection) if and only if $S/I_Δ^{(m)}$ ($S/I_Δ^m$) is clean for all $m\in\mathbb{N}$. If $\dim(Δ)=1$, we also prove that $S/I_Δ^{(2)}$ ($S/I_Δ^2$) is clean if and only if $S/I_Δ^{(2)}$ ($S/I_Δ^2$) is Cohen-Macaulay.
