Generalizing the concepts of Stanley-Reisner and affine monoid algebras, one can associate to a rational pointed fan the toric face ring. Assuming that this ring is Cohen-Macaulay, the main result of this paper is to characterize the situation when its canonical module is isomorphic to a fine graded ideal of the toric face ring. From this result several algebraic and combinatorial consequences are deduced in the situations where the fan may be related to a manifold with non-empty boundary, or the fan is a shellable fan.
We characterize the toric face rings that are normal (respectively seminormal). Extending results about local cohomology of Brun, Bruns, Ichim, Li and Römer of seminormal monoid rings and Stanley toric face rings, we prove the vanishing of certain graded parts of local cohomology of seminormal toric face rings. The combinatorial formula we obtain generalizes Hochster's formula. We also characterize all (necessarily seminormal) toric face rings that are $F$-pure or $F$-split over a field of characteristic $p>0$. An example is given to show that $F$-injectivity does not behave well with respect …
We introduce toric complexes as polyhedral complexes consisting of rational cones together with a set of integral generators for each cone, and we define their associated face rings. Abstract simplicial complexes and rational fans can be considered as toric complexes, and the face ring for toric complexes extend Stanley and Reisner's face ring for abstract simplicial complexes and Stanley's face ring for rational fans. Given a toric complex with defining ideal I for the face ring we give a geometrical interpretation of the initial ideals of I with respect to weight orders in terms of subdivisi…
Following a construction of Stanley we consider toric face rings associated to rational pointed fans. This class of rings is a common generalization of the concepts of Stanley--Reisner and affine monoid algebras. The main goal of this article is to unify parts of the theories of Stanley--Reisner- and affine monoid algebras. We consider (non-pure) shellable fan's and the Cohen--Macaulay property. Moreover, we study the local cohomology, the canonical module and the Gorenstein property of a toric face ring.
Toric face rings is a generalization of the concepts of affine monoid rings and Stanley-Reisner rings. We consider several properties which imply Koszulness for toric face rings over a field $k$. Generalizing works of Laudal, Sletsjøe and Herzog et al., graded Betti numbers of $k$ over the toric face rings are computed, and a characterization of Koszul toric face rings is provided. We investigate a conjecture suggested by Römer about the sufficient condition for the Koszul property. The conjecture is inspired by Fröberg's theorem on the Koszulness of quadratic squarefree monomial ideals. Final…
The notion of "toric face rings" generalizes both Stanley-Reisner rings and affine semigroup rings, and has been studied by Bruns, Romer, et.al. Here, we will show that, for a toric face ring $R$, the "graded" Matlis dual of a Cech complex gives a dualizing complex. In the most general setting, $R$ is not a graded ring in the usual sense. Hence technical argument is required.
In this paper, we study the well-know $g$-conjecture for rational homology spheres in a topological way. To do this, we construct a class of topological spaces with torus actions, which can be viewed as topological generalizations of toric varieties. Along this way we prove that after doing stellar subdivision operations at some middle dimensional faces of an arbitrary rational homology sphere, the $g$-conjecture is valid. Furthermore, we give topological proofs of several fundamental algebraic results about Buchsbaum complexes and simplicial manifolds. In this process, we also get a few inter…
We characterize the seminormality of an affine semigroup ring in terms of the dualizing complex, and the normality of a Cohen-Macaulay semigroup ring by the "shape" of the canonical module. We also characterize the seminormality of a toric face ring in terms of the dualizing complex. A toric face ring is a simultaneous generalization of Stanley-Reisner rings and affine semigroups.
A "toric face ring", which generalizes both Stanley-Reisner rings and affine semigroup rings, is studied by Bruns, Roemer and their coauthors recently. In this paper, under the "normality" assumption, we describe a dualizing complex of a toric face ring $R$ in a very concise way. Since $R$ is not a graded ring in general, the proof is not straightforward. We also develop the squarefree module theory over $R$, and show that the Buchsbaum property and the Gorenstein* property of $R$ are topological properties of its associated cell complex.
In this paper we define and study a ring associated to a graph that we call the cographic toric face ring, or simply the cographic ring. The cographic ring is the toric face ring defined by the following equivalent combinatorial structures of a graph: the cographic arrangement of hyperplanes, the Voronoi polytope, and the poset of totally cyclic orientations. We describe the properties of the cographic ring and, in particular, relate the invariants of the ring to the invariants of the corresponding graph. Our study of the cographic ring fits into a body of work on describing rings constructed …
The rank of a $d$-dimensional polytope $P$ is defined by $F-(d+1)$, where $F$ denotes the number of facets of $P$. In this paper, We focus on the toric rings of $(0,1)$-polytopes with small rank. We study their normality, the torsionfreeness of their divisor class groups and the classification of their isomorphism classes.
In this short note, we give a characterization of domains satisfying Serre's condition $(\mathrm{R}_1)$ in terms of their canonical modules. In the special case of toric rings, this generalizes a result of the second author (K. Yanagawa, Dualizing complexes of seminormal affine semigroup rings and toric face rings, J. Algebra 425 (2015).) where the normality is described in terms of the "shape" of the canonical module.
In the present paper, we give some sufficient conditions for $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])$ to be torsionfree, where $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])$ denote the divisor class group of the toric ring $\Bbbk[P]$ of an integral polytope $P$. We prove that $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])$ is torsionfree if $P$ is compressed, and $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])$ is torsionfree if $P$ is a $(0,1)$-polytope which has at most $\dim P+2$ facets. Moreover, we characterize the toric rings of $(0,1)$-polytopes in the case $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])\cong \mathbb{Z}$.
In this note we consider monoidal complexes and their associated algebras, called toric face rings. These rings generalize Stanley-Reisner rings and affine monoid algebras. We compute initial ideals of the presentation ideal of a toric face ring, and determine its graded Betti numbers. Our results generalize celebrated theorems of Hochster in combinatorial commutative algebra.
Some results on the Cohen-Macaulayness of the canonical module. We study the $S_2$-fication of rings which are quotients by lattices ideals. Given a simplicial lattice ideal of codimension two $I,$ its Macaulayfication is given explicitly from a system of generators of $I$.
