Taking the l^1-completion and the topological dual of the singular chain complex gives rise to l^1-homology and bounded cohomology respectively. In contrast to l^1-homology, major structural properties of bounded cohomology are well understood by the work of Gromov and Ivanov.
Based on an observation by Matsumoto and Morita, we derive a mechanism linking isomorphisms on the level of homology of Banach chain complexes to isomorphisms on the level of cohomology of the dual Banach cochain complexes and vice versa. Therefore, certain results on bounded cohomology can be transferred to l^1-homology. For example, we obtain a new proof of the fact that l^1-homology depends only on the fundamental group and that l^1-homology with twisted coefficients admits a description in terms of projective resolutions. The latter one in particular fills a gap in Park's approach.
In the second part, we demonstrate how l^1-homology can be used to get a better understanding of simplicial volume of non-compact manifolds.
Let Map(K,X) denote the space of pointed continuous maps from a finite cell complex K to a space X. Let E_* be a generalized homology theory. We use Goodwillie calculus methods to prove that under suitable conditions on K and X, Map(K, X) will send a E_*--isomorphism in either variable to a map that is monic in E_* homology. Interesting examples arise by letting E_* be K--theory, K be a sphere, and the map in the X variable be an exotic unstable Adams map between Moore spaces.
The Morse-Bott inequalities relate the topology of a closed manifold to the topology of the critical point set of a Morse-Bott function defined on it. The Morse-Bott inequalities are sometimes stated under incorrect orientation assumptions. We show that these assumptions are insufficient with an explicit counterexample and clarify the origin of the mistake.
Given a group, we construct a fundamental additive functor on its orbit category. We prove that any isomorphism conjecture valid for this fundamental isomorphism functor holds for all additive functors, like K-theory, cyclic homology, topological Hochschild homology, etc. Finally, we reduce this fundamental isomorphism conjecture for K-theoretic ones.
We prove an extension to the simplicial Nerve Lemma which establishes isomorphism of persistent homology groups, in the case where the covering spaces are filtered. While persistent homology is now widely used in topological data analysis, the usual Nerve Lemma does not provide isomorphism of persistent homology groups. Our argument involves some homological algebra: the key point being that although the maps produced in the standard proof of the Nerve Lemma do not commute as maps of chain complexes, the maps they induce on homology do.
We prove an $O(2)$-equivariant version of the Jones isomorphism relating the Borel $O(2)$-equivariant cohomology of the free loop space to the dihedral homology of the cochain algebra. We discuss polynomial forms and a variation of the de Rham isomorphism and use these to do a computation for the 2-sphere.
Let $k$ be a field, let $R$ be a commutative ring, and assume the exponential characteristic of $k$ is invertible in $R$. In this note, we prove that isomorphisms in Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives $\mathcal{DM}(k;R)$ are detected by motivic homology groups of base changes to all separable finitely generated field extensions of $k$. It then follows from previous conservativity results that these motivic homology groups detect isomorphisms between certain spaces in the pointed motivic homotopy category $\mathcal{H}(k)_*$.
We show that the generalized Khovanov homology, defined by the second author in the framework of chronological cobordisms, admits a grading by the group $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}_2$, in which all homogeneous summands are isomorphic to the unified Khovanov homology defined over the ring $\mathbb{Z}_π:=\mathbb{Z}[π]/(π^2-1)$ (here, setting $π$ to $\pm 1$ results either in even or odd Khovanov homology). The generalized homology has $\Bbbk := \mathbb{Z}[X,Y,Z^{\pm 1}]/(X^2=Y^2=1)$ as coefficients, and the above implies that most of automorphisms of $\Bbbk$ fix the isomorphism class of the gener…
We show that the sutured Floer homology of a sutured 3-manifold of the form $(D^2 \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ can be expressed as the homology of a string-type complex, generated by certain sets of curves on $(D^2, F)$ and with a differential given by resolving crossings. We also give some generalisations of this isomorphism, computing "hat" and "infinity" versions of this string homology. In addition to giving interesting elementary facts about the algebra of curves on surfaces, these isomorphisms are inspired by, and establish further, connections between invariants from Floer homology and st…
We use category-theoretic techniques to provide two proofs showing that for a higher-rank graph $Λ$, its cubical (co-)homology and categorical (co-)homology groups are isomorphic in all degrees, thus answering a question of Kumjian, Pask and Sims in the positive. Our first proof uses the topological realization of a higher-rank graph, which was introduced by Kaliszewski, Kumjian, Quigg, and Sims. In our more combinatorial second proof, we construct, explicitly and in both directions, maps on the level of (co-)chain complexes that implement said isomorphism. Along the way, we extend the definit…
Using a cap product, we construct an explicit Poincaré duality isomorphism between the blown-up intersection cohomology and the Borel-Moore intersection homology, for any commutative ring of coefficients and second-countable, oriented pseudomanifolds.
We compare the sheaf-theoretic and singular chain versions of Poincare duality for intersection homology, showing that they are isomorphic via naturally defined maps. Similarly, we demonstrate the existence of canonical isomorphisms between the singular intersection cohomology cup product, the hypercohomology product induced by the Goresky-MacPherson sheaf pairing, and, for PL pseudomanifolds, the Goresky-MacPherson PL intersection product. We also show that the de Rham isomorphism of Brasselet, Hector, and Saralegi preserves product structures.

Measure homology was introduced by Thurston in his notes about the geometry and topology of 3-manifolds, where it was exploited in the computation of the simplicial volume of hyperbolic manifolds. Zastrow and Hansen independently proved that there exists a canonical isomorphism between measure homology and singular homology (on the category of CW-complexes), and it was then shown by Loeh that, in the absolute case, such isomorphism is in fact an isometry with respect to the L^1-seminorm on singular homology and the total variation seminorm on measure homology. Loeh's result plays a fundamental…
We describe a natural isomorphism between the set of equivalence classes of pseudocycles and the integral homology groups of a smooth manifold. Our arguments generalize to settings well-suited for applications in enumerative algebraic geometry and for construction of the virtual fundamental class in the Gromov-Witten theory.
Null Lagrangian-preserving surgeries are a generalization of the Garoufalidis and Rozansky null-moves, that these authors introduced to study the Kricker lift of the Kontsevich integral, in the setting of pairs (M,K) composed of a rational homology sphere M and a null-homologous knot K in M. They are defined as replacements of null-homologous rational homology handlebodies of M\K by other such handlebodies with identical Lagrangian. A null Lagrangian-preserving surgery induces a canonical isomorphism between the rational Alexander modules of the involved pairs, which preserves the Blanchfield …
Generalizing work of Doi and of Idrissi, we define a coHochschild homology theory for chain coalgebras over any commutative ring and prove its naturality with respect to morphisms of chain coalgebras up to strong homotopy. As a consequence we obtain that if the comultiplication of a chain coalgebra $C$ is itself a morphism of chain coalgebras up to strong homotopy, then the coHochschild complex $\cohoch (C)$ admits a natural comultiplicative structure. In particular, if $K$ is a reduced simplicial set and $C_{*}K$ is its normalized chain complex, then $\cohoch (C_{*}K)$ is naturally a homotopy…
Let F be a field of characteristic zero and let f(t,n) be the stabilization homomorphism from the n-th integral homology of SL(t,F) to the n-th homology of SL(t+1,F). We prove the following results: For all n, f(t,n) is an isomorphism if t is at least n+1, and is surjective for t=n, confirming a conjecture of C-H. Sah. Furthermore if n is odd, then f(n,n) is an isomorphism and when n is even the kernel of f(n,n) is the (n+1)st power of the fundamental ideal of the Witt Ring of the field.. If n is even, then the cokernel of f(n-1,n) is naturally isomorphic to the n-th Milnor-Witt K-group of F, …
Let $F$ be a finite group. We consider the lamplighter group $L=F\wr\mathbb{Z}$ over $F$. We prove that $L$ has a classifying space for proper actions $\underline{E} L$ which is a complex of dimension two. We use this to give an explicit proof of the Baum-Connes conjecture (without coefficients), that states that the assembly map $μ_i^L:K_i^L(\underline{E} L)\rightarrow K_i(C^*L)\;(i=0,1)$ is an isomorphism. Actually, $K_0(C^*L)$ is free abelian of countable rank, with an explicit basis consisting of projections in $C^*L$, while $K_1(C^*L)$ is infinite cyclic, generated by the unitary of $C^*L…
