We show that there is a restriction, or modification of the finite-variable fragments of First Order Logic in which a weak form of Craig's Interpolation Theorem holds, but a strong form of this theorem does not hold. Translating these results into Algebraic Logic we obtain a finitely axiomatizable subvariety of finite dimensional Representable Cylindric Algebras that has the Strong Amalgamation Property, but does not have the Superamalgamation Property. This settles a conjecture of Pigozzi
We consider the propositional logic equipped with Chellas stit operators for a finite set of individual agents plus the historical necessity modality. We settle the question of whether such a logic enjoys restricted interpolation property, which requires the existence of an interpolant only in cases where the consequence contains no Chellas stit operators occurring in the premise. We show that if action operators count as logical symbols, then such a logic has restricted interpolation property iff the number of agents does not exceed three. On the other hand, if action operators are considered…
We introduce and investigate the notion of uniform Lyndon interpolation property (ULIP) which is a strengthening of both uniform interpolation property and Lyndon interpolation property. We prove several propositional modal logics including ${\bf K}$, ${\bf KB}$, ${\bf GL}$ and ${\bf Grz}$ enjoy ULIP. Our proofs are modifications of Visser's proofs of uniform interpolation property using layered bisimulations. Also we give a new upper bound on the complexity of uniform interpolants for ${\bf GL}$ and ${\bf Grz}$.
We develop a Gentzen-style proof theory for super-Belnap logics (extensions of the four-valued Dunn-Belnap logic), expanding on an approach initiated by Pynko. We show that just like substructural logics may be understood proof-theoretically as logics which relax the structural rules of classical logic but keep its logical rules as well as the rules of Identity and Cut, super-Belnap logics may be seen as logics which relax Identity and Cut but keep the logical rules as well as the structural rules of classical logic. A generalization of the cut elimination theorem for classical propositional l…
We prove the uniform interpolation theorem in modal provability logics GL and Grz by a proof-theoretical method, using analytical and terminating sequent calculi for the logics. The calculus for Gödel-Löb's logic GL is a variant of the standard sequent calculus, in the case of Grzegorczyk's logic Grz, the calculus implements an explicit loop-preventing mechanism inspired by work of Heuerding.
This paper shows that the interpolation theorem fails in the intuitionistic logic of constant domains. This result refutes two previously published claims that the interpolation property holds.

We prove a generalization of Maehara's lemma to show that the extensions of classical and intuitionistic first-order logic with a special type of geometric axioms, called singular geometric axioms, have Craig's interpolation property. As a corollary, we obtain a direct proof of interpolation for (classical and intuitionistic) first-order logic with identity, as well as interpolation for several mathematical theories, including the theory of equivalence relations, (strict) partial and linear orders, and various intuitionistic order theories such as apartness and positive partial and linear orde…
This paper develops a general methodology to connect propositional and first-order interpolation. In fact, the existence of suitable skolemizations and of Herbrand expansions together with a propositional interpolant suffice to construct a first-order interpolant. This methodology is realized for lattice-based finitely-valued logics, the top element representing true. It is shown that interpolation is decidable for these logics.
We study different representation theorems for various reducts of Heyting polyadic algebras. Superamalgamation is proved for several (natural reducts) and our results are compared to the finitizability problem in classical algebraic logic dealing with cylindric and polyadic (Boolean algebras). We also prove several new neat embedding theorems, and obtain that the class of representable algebras based on (a generalized) Kripke semantics coincide with the class of algebras having the neat embedding property, that is those algebras that are subneat reducts of algebras having $ω$ extra dimensions.
Ordinary infinitary languages L_{lambda, kappa} satisfy the Interpolation Theorem only in the case lambda <= {aleph_1}, kappa = {aleph_0}, this include first order logic of course. There are also some pairs of such logics satifying interpolation, e.g. (L_{lambda^+,{aleph_0}}, L_{(2^lambda)^+, lambda^+}) . Does this come from an intermidiate logic satisfying it? Is it nice? unique? We define for kappa = beth_kappa a new logic L^1_kappa such that L_{kappa omega}< L^1_kappa LL_{kappa kappa} and L^1_kappa is very nice; in particular satisfies the Interpolation Theorem. Moreover, L^1_kappa has a mo…
A logic satisfies the interpolation property provided that whenever a formula Δ is a consequence of another formula Γ, then this is witnessed by a formula Θ which only refers to the language common to Γ and Δ. That is, the relational (and functional) symbols occurring in Θ occur in both Γ and Δ, Γ has Θ as a consequence, and Θ has Δ as a consequence. Both classical and intuitionistic predicate logic have the interpolation property, but it is a long open problem which intermediate predicate logics enjoy it. In 2013 Mints, Olkhovikov, and Urquhart showed that constant domain intuitionistic logic…
In this paper, a proof-theoretic method to prove uniform Lyndon interpolation for non-normal modal and conditional logics is introduced and applied to show that the logics $\mathsf{E}$, $\mathsf{M}$, $\mathsf{EN}$, $\mathsf{MN}$, $\mathsf{MC}$, $\mathsf{K}$, and their conditional versions, $\mathsf{CE}$, $\mathsf{CM}$, $\mathsf{CEN}$, $\mathsf{CMN}$, $\mathsf{CMC}$, $\mathsf{CK}$, in addition to $\mathsf{CKID}$ have that property. In particular, it implies that these logics have uniform interpolation. Although for some of them the latter is known, the fact that they have uniform Lyndon interpo…
G3-style sequent calculi for the logics in the cube of non-normal modal logics and for their deontic extensions are studied. For each calculus we prove that weakening and contraction are height-preserving admissible, and we give a syntactic proof of the admissibility of cut. This implies that the subformula property holds and that derivability can be decided by a terminating proof search whose complexity is in PSPACE. These calculi are shown to be equivalent to the axiomatic ones and, therefore, they are sound and complete with respect to neighbourhood semantics. Finally, it is given a Maehara…
We prove that the sequent calculus $\mathsf{L_{RBL}}$ for residuated basic logic $\mathsf{RBL}$ has strong finite model property, and that intuitionistic logic can be embedded into basic propositional logic $\mathsf{BPL}$. Thus $\mathsf{RBL}$ is decidable. Moreover, it follows that the class of residuated basic algebras has the finite embeddability property, and that $\mathsf{BPL}$ is PSPACE-complete, and that intuitionistic logic can be embedded into the modal logic $\mathsf{K4}$.
A variety is said to be coherent if the finitely generated subalgebras of its finitely presented members are also finitely presented. In a recent paper by the authors it was shown that coherence forms a key ingredient of the uniform deductive interpolation property for equational consequence in a variety, and a general criterion was given for the failure of coherence (and hence uniform deductive interpolation) in varieties of algebras with a term-definable semilattice reduct. In this paper, a more general criterion is obtained and used to prove the failure of coherence and uniform deductive in…
Weakly Aggregative Modal Logic (WAML) is a collection of disguised polyadic modal logics with n-ary modalities whose arguments are all the same. WAML has some interesting applications on epistemic logic and logic of games, so we study some basic model theoretical aspects of WAML in this paper. Specifically, we give a van Benthem-Rosen characterization theorem of WAML based on an intuitive notion of bisimulation and show that each basic WAML system K_n lacks Craig Interpolation.
We study the fixed point property and the Craig interpolation property for sublogics of the interpretability logic $\mathbf{IL}$. We provide a complete description of these sublogics concerning the uniqueness of fixed points, the fixed point property and the Craig interpolation property.
In this paper we show that the intuitionistic monotone modal logic $\mathsf{iM}$ has the uniform Lyndon interpolation property (ULIP). The logic $\mathsf{iM}$ is a non-normal modal logic on an intuitionistic basis, and the property ULIP is a strengthening of interpolation in which the interpolant depends only on the premise or the conclusion of an implication, respecting the polarities of the propositional variables. Our method to prove ULIP yields explicit uniform interpolants and makes use of a terminating sequent calculus for $\mathsf{iM}$ that we have developed for this purpose. As far as …
This is a survey article in algebraic logic, where we take a magical tour from old concepts due to Henkin, Monk and Tarski like neat embeddings, to modern views and perspectives, culminating in the use of Erdos graphs in settling important questions in algebraic logic.
The aim of this work is to develop a study from the perspective of Abstract Algebraic Logic of some bilattice-based logical systems introduced in the nineties by Ofer Arieli and Arnon Avron. The motivation for such an investigation has two main roots. On the one hand there is an interest in bilattices as an elegant formalism that gave rise in the last two decades to a variety of applications, especially in the field of Theoretical Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. In this respect, the present study aims to be a contribution to a better understanding of the mathematical and logical …
The general aim of this article is to study the negation fragment of classical logic within the framework of contemporary (Abstract) Algebraic Logic. More precisely, we shall find the three classes of algebras that are canonically associated with a logic in Algebraic Logic, that is, we find the classes $\mathrm{Alg}^*$, $\mathrm{Alg}$ and the intrinsic variety of the negation fragment of classical logic. In order to achieve this, firstly we propose a Hilbert-style axiomatization for this fragment. Then, we characterize the reduced matrix models and the full generalized matrix models of this lo…
For a cardinal of the form $κ=\beth_κ$, Shelah's logic $L^1_κ$ has a characterisation as the maximal logic above $\bigcup_{λ<κ} L_{λ, ω}$ satisfying Strong Undefinability of Well Order (SUDWO). SUDWO is a strengthening of the Undefinability of Well Order (UDWO). We prove that if $κ$ is singular of countable cofinality, Karp's chain logic \cite{Karpintroduceschain} is above $L^1_κ$, while it is already known that it satisfies UDWO and Interpolation. Moreover, we show that in these circumstances, the chain logic is -- in a sense -- maximal among logics with chain models to satisfy UDWO. We then …
Büchi and Owen studied algebraic structures called hoops. Hoops provide a natural algebraic semantics for a class of substructural logics that we think of as intuitionistic analogues of the widely studied Łukasiewicz logics. Ben Yaacov extended Łukasiewicz logic to get what is called continuous logic by adding a halving operator. In this paper, we define the notion of continuous hoop, or coop for short, and show that coops provide a natural algebraic semantics for continuous logic. We characterise the simple and subdirectly irreducible coops and investigate the decision problem for various the…
Drawing on the previous work on interpolation failure, we show that Beth's definability theorem does not hold for intuitionistic predicate logic of constant domains without identity.
In this paper we prove a Robinson consistency theorem for a class of many-sorted hybrid logics as a consequence of an Omitting Types Theorem. An important corollary of this result is an interpolation theorem.
In this article we introduce the variety of monadic BL-algebras as BL-algebras endowed with two monadic operators $\forall$ and $\exists$. After a study of the basic properties of this variety we show that this class is the equivalent algebraic semantics of the monadic fragment of Hájek's basic predicate logic. In addition, we start a systematic study of the main subvarieties of monadic BL-algebras, some of which constitute the algebraic semantics of well-known monadic logics: monadic Gödel logic and monadic Łukasiewicz logic. In the last section we give a complete characterization of totally …
In this paper, a short survey about the concepts underlying general logics is given. In particular, a novel rigorous definition of a fuzzy negation as an operation acting on a lattice to render it into a fuzzy logic is presented. According to this definition, a fuzzy negation satisfies the weak double negation condition, requiring double negation to be expansive, the antitony condition, being equivalent to the disjunctive De Morgan law and thus warranting compatibility of negation with the lattice operations, and the Boolean boundary condition stating that the universal bounds of the lattice a…
An algebraically expandable (AE) class is a class of algebraic structures axiomatizable by sentences of the form $\forall \exists! \land p = q$. For a logic $L$ algebraized by a quasivariety $\mathcal{Q}$ we show that the AE-subclasses of $\mathcal{Q}$ correspond to certain natural expansions of $L$, which we call {\em algebraic expansions}. These turn out to be a special case of the expansions by implicit connectives studied by X. Caicedo. We proceed to characterize all the AE-subclasses of Abelian $\ell$-groups and perfect MV-algebras, thus fully describing the algebraic expansions of their …
