For a cofibrantly generated Quillen model category, we show that the cofibrant replacement functor constructed using the small object argument admits a cotriple structure. If all acyclic cofibrations are monomorphisms, the fibrant replacement functor constructed using the small object argument admits a triple structure. For a triple in the base category, the associated cosimplicial resolution is not necessarily homotopy invariant. However using a mix of the triple with the cofibrant replacement cotriple we construct a 'homotopically correct' version of the cosimplicial resolution of the triple. This allows us to construct a Bousfield-Kan completion functor with respect to a triple, and for pointed cofibrantly-generated model categories a Bousfield-Kan spectral sequence that computes the relative homotopy groups of the Bousfield-Kan completion of an object.

We show that weak equivalences in a (cofibrantly generated) left Bousfield localization of the projective model category of simplicial presheaves can be characterized by a local lifting property if and only if the localization is exact.
Working in the Arone-Ching framework for homotopical descent, it follows that the Bousfield-Kan completion map with respect to integral homology is the unit of a derived adjunction. We prove that this derived adjunction, comparing spaces with coalgebra complexes over the associated integral homology comonad, via integral chains, can be turned into a derived equivalence by replacing spaces with the full subcategory of simply connected spaces. In particular, this provides an integral chains characterization of the homotopy type of simply connected spaces.
The homological properties of localizations and completions of metabelian groups are studied. It is shown that, for $R=\mathbb Q$ or $R=\mathbb Z/n$ and a finitely presented metabelian group $G$, the natural map from $G$ to its $R$-completion induces an epimorphism of homology groups $H_2(-,R)$. This answers a problem of A.K. Bousfield for the class of metabelian groups.
Let V be a cofibrantly generated monoidal model category and let M be a monoidal V-model category. Given a cofibrant C-coloured operad P in V, we give sufficient conditions for the fibrant replacement and cofibrant replacement functors in M^C to preserve P-algebra structures. In particular, we show how P-algebra structures can be transferred along derived Quillen adjunctions of monoidal V-model categories, and we apply this result to the Quillen adjunctions defined by enriched Bousfield localizations and colocalizations on M. As an application, we prove that in the category of symmetric spectr…
We give an overview of five rationalization theories for spaces (Bousfield-Kan's $\mathbb Q$-completion; Sullivan's rationalization; Bousfield's homology rationalization; Casacuberta-Peschke's $Ω$-rationalization; Gómez-Tato-Halperin-Tanré's $π_1$-fiberwise rationalization) that extend the classical rationalization of simply connected spaces. We also give an overview of the corresponding rationalization theories for groups ($\mathbb Q$-completion; $H\mathbb Q$-localization; Baumslag rationalization) that extend the classical Malcev completion.
For X a simply-connected finite H-space, there is a Bousfield-Kan spectral sequence which converges to the homotopy of its K-completion. When X=Spin(2n+1), we expect that these homotopy groups equal the v1-periodic homotopy groups in dimension greater than n^2. In this paper, we accomplish two things. (1) We prove that, for any X, the 1-line of this spectral sequence is determined in an explicit way from K-theory and Adams operations. (2) For X=Spin(2n+1), we make an explicit computation of this 1-line.
A group completion functor Q is constructed in the category of algebras in simplicial sets over a cofibrant E_n-operad M. It is shown that Q defines a Bousfield-Friedander simplicial model category on M-algebras.
We extend some classical results of Bousfield on homology localizations and nilpotent completions to a presentably symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category $\mathscr{M}$ admitting a multiplicative left-complete $t$-structure. If $E$ is a homotopy commutative algebra in $\mathscr{M}$ we show that $E$-nilpotent completion, $E$-localization, and a suitable formal completion agree on bounded below objects when $E$ satisfies some reasonable conditions.
For a group $G$ and $R=\mathbb Z,\mathbb Z/p,\mathbb Q$ we denote by $\hat G_R$ the $R$-completion of $G.$ We study the map $H_n(G,K)\to H_n(\hat G_R,K),$ where $(R,K)=(\mathbb Z,\mathbb Z/p),(\mathbb Z/p,\mathbb Z/p),(\mathbb Q,\mathbb Q).$ We prove that $H_2(G,K)\to H_2(\hat G_R,K)$ is an epimorphism for a finitely generated solvable group $G$ of finite Prüfer rank. In particular, Bousfield's $HK$-localisation of such groups coincides with the $K$-completion for $K=\mathbb Z/p,\mathbb Q.$ Moreover, we prove that $H_n(G,K)\to H_n(\hat G_R,K)$ is an epimorphism for any $n$ if $G$ is a finitely…
We develop a general theory of cosimplicial resolutions, homotopy spectral sequences, and completions for objects in model categories, extending work of Bousfield-Kan and Bendersky-Thompson for ordinary spaces. This is based on a generalized cosimplicial version of the Dwyer-Kan-Stover theory of resolution model categories, and we are able to construct our homotopy spectral sequences and completions using very flexible weak resolutions in the spirit of relative homological algebra. We deduce that our completion functors have triple structures and preserve certain fiber squares up to homotopy. …
We prove that for a free noncyclic group $F$, $H_2(\hat F_\mathbb Q, \mathbb Q)$ is an uncountable $\mathbb Q$-vector space. Here $\hat F_\mathbb Q$ is the $\mathbb Q$-completion of $F$. This answers a problem of A.K. Bousfield for the case of rational coefficients. As a direct consequence of this result it follows that, a wedge of circles is $\mathbb Q$-bad in the sense of Bousfield-Kan. The same methods as used in the proof of the above results allow to show that, the homology $H_2(\hat F_\mathbb Z,\mathbb Z)$ is not divisible group, where $\hat F_\mathbb Z$ is the integral pronilpotent comp…
Using the functor of Baumslag rationalization of groups we construct a functor on the category of all (non necessarily simply connected) spaces that extends the classical rationalization of simply connected spaces. We study this functor and compare it with other extensions of the classical rationalization: Bousfield-Kan $\mathbb Q$-completion; Bousfield's homology rationalization; Gómez-Tato--Halperin--Tantré's $π_1$-fiberwise rationalization; and the localization with respect to the maps $n:S^1\to S^1$ that we call $Ω$-rationalization.
Fix a prime $p$. Since their definition in the context of Localization Theory, the homotopy functors $P_{B\Z/p}$ and $CW_{B\Z/p}$ have shown to be powerful tools to understand and describe the mod $p$ structure of a space. In this paper, we study the effect of these functors on a wide class of spaces which includes classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and their homotopical analogues. Moreover, we investigate their relationship in this context with other relevant functors in the analysis of the mod $p$ homotopy, such as Bousfield-Kan completion and Bousfield homological localization.
For a commutative ring $R$, in contrast to the completion in the sense of Bousfield and Kan at just a prime integer, there cannot exist spaces which are good and bad in an arbitrary way.
These are notes, by Z. Fiedorowicz, from lectures given by J. Frank Adams at the University of Chicago in spring of 1973. They give an elegant axiomatic presentation of localization and completion in algebraic topology. The construction of localization and completion functors with respect to an arbitrary generalized homology theory is derived from the axioms by using the Brown representability theorem. These notes were never formally published, due to an apparent flaw in the proof. The relevant representable functors could not be shown to be set-valued, as opposed to class-valued. Subsequent w…
