Let $X$ be a finite CW complex and let $h_1, h_2: C(X)\to A$ be two unital \hm s, where $A$ is a unital C*-algebra. We study the problem when $h_1$ and $h_2$ are approximately homotopic. We present a $K$-theoretical necessary and sufficient condition for them to be approximately homotopic under the assumption that $A$ is a unital separable simple C*-algebra of tracial rank zero, or $A$ is a unital purely infinite simple C*-algebra. When they are approximately homotopic, we also give a bound for the length of the homotopy. Suppose that $h: C(X)\to A$ is a monomorphism and $u\in A$ is a unitary (with $[u]=\{0\}$ in $K_1(A)$). We prove that, for any $\ep>0,$ and any compact subset ${\cal F}\subset C(X),$ there exists $\dt>0$ and a finite subset ${\cal G}\subset C(X)$ satisfying the following: if $\|[h(f), u]\|<\dt$ and $\text{Bott}(h,u)=\{0\},$ then there exists a continuous rectifiable path $\{u_t: t\in [0,1]\}$ such that $$ \|[h(g),u_t]\|<\ep, \rforal g\in {\cal F},u_0=u\andeqn u_1=1_A. $$ Moreover, $$ \text{Length}(\{u_t\})\le 2π+\ep. $$ We show that if $\text{dim}X\le 1,$ or $A$ is purely infinite simple, then $\dt$ and ${\cal G}$ are universal (independent of $A$ or $h$). In the case that ${\rm dim} X=1,$ this provides an improvement of the so-called the Basic Homotopy Lemma of Bratteli, Elliott, Evans and Kishimoto for the case that $A$ is mentioned above.
Moreover, we show that $\dt$ and ${\cal G}$ can not be universal whenever
$\text{dim} X\ge 2.$ Nevertheless, we also found that $\dt$ can be chosen to be dependent on a measure distribution but independent of $A$ and $h.$
We prove a complete analog of the Borsuk Homotopy Extension Theorem for arbitrary semiprojective C*-algebras. We also obtain some other results about semiprojective C*-algebras: a partial lifting theorem with specified quotient, a lifting result for homomorphisms close to a liftable homomorphism, and that sufficiently close homomorphisms from a semiprojective C*-algebra are homotopic.
Let $A$, $B$ be C*-algebras; $A$ separable, $B$ $σ$-unital and stable. We introduce a notion of translation invariance for asymptotic homomorphisms from $SA=C_0(\mathbb R)\otimes A$ to $B$ and show that the Connes-Higson construction applied to any extension of $A$ by $B$ is homotopic to a translation invariant asymptotic homomorphism. In the other direction we give a construction which produces extensions of $A$ by $B$ out of such a translation invariant asymptotic homomorphism. This leads to our main result; that the homotopy classes of extensions coincide with the homotopy classes of transl…
In this paper, we show that the homomorphisms between two unital one-dimensional NCCW complexes with the same KK-class are stably homotopic, i.e., with adding on a common homomorphism (with finite dimensional image), they are homotopic. As a consequence, any one-dimensional NCCW complex has the Property (H).
We consider the semigroup $Ext(A,B)$ of extensions of a separable C*-algebra $A$ by a stable C*-algebra $B$ modulo unitary equivalence and modulo asymptotically split extensions. This semigroup contains the group $Ext^{-1/2}(A,B)$ of invertible elements (i.e. of semi-invertible extensions). We show that the functor $Ext^{1/2}(A,B)$ is homotopy invariant and that it coincides with the functor of homotopy classes of asymptotic homomorphisms from $C(\mathbb T)\otimes A$ to $M(B)$ that map $SA\subseteq C(\mathbb T)\otimes A$ into $B$.
We study the $C^*$-algebras related to Mishchenko's version of asymptotic homomorphisms. In particular we show that their different versions are weakly homotopy equivalent but not isomorphic to each other. We give also the continuous version for these algebras.
Let $A$ be a separable $C^*$-algebra and let $B$ be a stable $C^*$-algebra with a strictly positive element. We consider the (semi)group $\Ext^{as}(A,B)$ (resp. $\Ext(A,B)$) of homotopy classes of asymptotic (resp. of genuine) homomorphisms from $A$ to the corona algebra $M(B)/B$ and the natural map $i:\Ext(A,B)\ar\Ext^{as}(A,B)$. We show that if $A$ is a suspension then $\Ext^{as}(A,B)$ coincides with $E$-theory of Connes and Higson and the map $i$ is surjective. In particular any asymptotic homomorphism from $SA$ to $M(B)/B$ is homotopic to some genuine homomorphism.
We discuss when a unital homomorphism ϕ : C(X) \rightarrow A can be approximated by finite-dimensional homomorphisms, where X is a compact metric space and A is unital simple C*-algebra with tracial rank one. In this paper, we will give a necessary and sufficient condition.
In this paper, we prove that unital homomorphisms from continuous functions on a compact metric space to matrices over a C*-algebra with tracial rank at most one are approximately diagonalizable. We also consider some generalizations of this result.
Let $ξ:C^*(E)\to C^*(F)$ be a unital $*$-homomorphism between simple purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras of finite graphs. We prove that there exists a unital $*$-homomorphism $ϕ:L(E)\to L(F)$ between the corresponding Leavitt path-algebras such that $ξ$ is homotopic to the map $\hatϕ:C^*(E)\to C^*(F)$ induced by completion. We show moreover that $\hatϕ$ is a homotopy equivalence in the $C^*$-algebraic sense if and only if $ϕ$ is a homotopy equivalence in the algebraic, polynomial sense. We deduce, in particular, that any isomorphism between simple purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras is …
A linear map $ϕ:{\mathcal A}\to {\mathcal B} $ between (Banach) algebras is called 3-homomorphism if $ϕ(abc)=ϕ(a)ϕ(b)ϕ(c)$ for each $a, b, c \in {\mathcal A}$. We investigate 3-homomorphisms on Banach algebras with bounded approximate identities and establish in two ways that every involution preserving homomorphism between $C^*$-algebras is norm decreasing.
We study a pair of $C^*$-algebras by associating a $*$-homomorphism from $A$ to $B$ allowing an approximate left-inverse to the sequence algebra of $A$ in a manner reminiscent of several tracial approximation properties. We are particularly interested how regularity properties in the Elliott classification program pass from $B$ to $A$. Among them, we show that the strict comparison property and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability pass from $B$ to $A$ in our setting.
We prove that if two nonzero homomorphisms from the Cuntz algebra O_infinity to a purely infinite simple C*-algebra have the same class in KK-theory, and if either both are unital or both are nonunital, then they are approximately unitarily equivalent. It follows that O_infinity is classifiable in the sense of Rordam. In particular, Rordam's classification theorem for direct limits of matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras extends to direct limits involving both matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras and corners of O_infinity for which the K_0 group can be an arbitrary countable abelian gr…
We prove that if two homomorphisms from O_{\infty} to a purely infinite simple C*-algebra have the same class in KK-theory, and if either both are unital or both are nonunital, then they are approximately unitarily equivalent. It follows that O_{\infty} is classifiable in the sense of Rordam. In particular, Rordam's classification theorem for direct limits of matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras extends to direct limits involving both matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras and corners of O_{\infty}, for which the K_0-group can be an arbitrary countable abelian group with no even torsion.
Let $A$ be a separable $C^*$-algebra and $B$ a stable $C^*$-algebra containing a strictly positive element. We show that the group $\Ext(SA,B)$ of unitary equivalence classes of extensions of $SA$ by $B$, modulo the extensions which are asymptotically split, coincides with the group of homotopy classes of such extensions. This is done by proving that the Connes-Higson construction gives rise to an isomorphism between $\Ext(SA,B)$ and the $E$-theory group $E(A,B)$ of homotopy classes of asymptotic homomorphisms from $S^2A$ to $B$.
We introduce the concept of finitely coloured equivalence for unital *-homomorphisms between C*-algebras, for which unitary equivalence is the 1-coloured case. We use this notion to classify *-homomorphisms from separable, unital, nuclear C*-algebras into ultrapowers of simple, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras with compact extremal trace space up to 2-coloured equivalence by their behaviour on traces; this is based on a 1-coloured classification theorem for certain order zero maps, also in terms of tracial data. As an application we calculate the nuclear dimension of non-AF, simple, separ…
Let $A$ be a unital simple separable exact C$^*$-algebra which is approximately divisible and of real rank zero. We prove that the set of positive elements in $A$ with a fixed non-compact Cuntz class has vanishing homotopy groups. Combined with work of S. Zhang for the case of compact elements, this gives a complete calculation of the homotopy groups of Cuntz classes for these algebras. Examples covered include approximately finite-dimensional (AF) algebras and irrational noncommutative tori.
We define and examine sequentially split $*$-homomorphisms between $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras and $\mathrm{C}^*$-dynamical systems. For a $*$-homomorphism, the property of being sequentially split can be regarded as an approximate weakening of being a split-injective inclusion of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras. We show for a sequentially split $*$-homomorphism that a multitude of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic approximation properties pass from the target algebra to the domain algebra, including virtually all important approximation properties currently used in the classification theory of $\mathrm{C}^*$-alge…
We prove some stability results for certain classes of C*-algebras. We prove that whenever $A$ is a finite-dimensional C*-algebra, $B$ is a C*-algebra and $ϕ\colon A\to B$ is approximately a $^*$-homomorphism then there is an actual $^*$-homomorphism close to $ϕ$ by a factor depending only on how far is $ϕ$ from being a $^*$-homomorphism and not on $A$ or $B$.
For a Banach algebra $A$ with a bounded approximate identity, we investigate the $A$-module homomorphisms of certain introverted subspaces of $A^*$, and show that all $A$-module homomorphisms of $A^*$ are normal if and only if $A$ is an ideal of $A^{**}$. We obtain some characterizations of compactness and discreteness for a locally compact quantum group $\G$. Furthermore, in the co-amenable case we prove that the multiplier algebra of $\LL$ can be identified with $\MG.$ As a consequence, we prove that $\G$ is compact if and only if $\LUC={\rm WAP}(\G)$ and $\MG\cong\mathcal{Z}({\rm LUC}(\G)^*…
Let A and B be $C^*$-algebras, A separable, and B $σ$-unital and stable. It is shown that there are natural isomorphisms $E(A,B)=KK(SA,Q(B))=[SA,Q(B)\otimes K]$, where $SA=C_0(0,1)\otimes A$, $[\cdot,\cdot]$ denotes the set of homotopy classes of *-homomorphisms, $Q(B) = M(B)/B$ is the generalized Calkin algebra and K denotes the $C^*$-algebra of compact operators.
