We prove that the associativity equations of two-dimensional topological quantum field theories are very natural reductions of the fundamental nonlinear equations of the theory of submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean spaces and give a natural class of potential flat torsionless submanifolds. We show that all potential flat torsionless submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean spaces bear natural structures of Frobenius algebras on their tangent spaces. These Frobenius structures are generated by the corresponding flat first fundamental form and the set of the second fundamental forms of the submanifolds (in fact, the structural constants are given by the set of the Weingarten operators of the submanifolds). We prove in this paper that each N-dimensional Frobenius manifold can locally be represented as a potential flat torsionless submanifold in a 2N-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space. By our construction this submanifold is uniquely determined up to motions. Moreover, in this paper we consider a nonlinear system, which is a natural generalization of the associativity equations, namely, the system describing all flat torsionless submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean spaces, and prove that this system is integrable by the inverse scattering method.
We solve the problem of describing all nonlocal Hamiltonian operators of hydrodynamic type with flat metrics. This problem is also equivalent to the description of all flat submanifolds with flat normal bundle in a pseudo-Euclidean space. It is proved that every such Hamiltonian operator (or the submanifold corresponding to the operator) gives a pencil of compatible Poisson brackets, generates bi-Hamiltonian integrable hierarchies of hydrodynamic type, and also defines a family of integrals in involution. We prove that a natural special class of such Hamiltonian operators (submanifolds) is des…
The notion of a Frobenius submanifold - a submanifold of a Frobenius manifold which is itself a Frobenius manifold with respect to structures induced from the original manifold - is studied. Two dimensional submanifolds are particularly simple. More generally, sufficient conditions are given for a submanifold to be a so-called natural submanifold. These ideas are illustrated using examples of Frobenius manifolds constructed from Coxeter groups, and for the Frobenius manifolds governing the quantum cohomology of CP^2 and CP^1 \times CP^1.
We prove a duality principle for a special class of submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean spaces. This class of submanifolds with potential of normals is introduced in this paper. We prove also, for example, that an arbitrary Frobenius manifold can be realized as a certain flat submanifold of this very natural class.
Submanifolds of Frobenius manifolds are studied. In particular, so-called natural submanifolds are defined and, for semi-simple Frobenius manifolds, classified. These carry the structure of a Frobenius algebra on each tangent space, but will, in general, be curved. The induced curvature is studied, a main result being that these natural submanifolds carry a induced pencil of compatible metrics. It is then shown how one may constrain the bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies associated to a Frobenius manifold to live on these natural submanifolds whilst retaining their, now non-local, bi-Hamiltonian struc…
We construct a class of infinite-dimensional Frobenius manifolds on the space of pairs of certain even functions meromorphic inside or outside the unit circle. Via a bi-Hamiltonian recursion relation, the principal hierarchies associated to such Frobenius manifolds are found to be certain extensions of the dispersionless two-component BKP hierarchy. Moreover, we show that these infinite-dimensional Frobenius manifolds contain finite-dimensional Frobenius submanifolds as defined on the orbit space of Coxeter groups of types B and D.
We introduce a class of potential submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean spaces (each N-dimensional potential submanifold is a special flat torsionless submanifold in a 2N-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space) and prove that each N-dimensional Frobenius manifold can be locally represented as an N-dimensional potential submanifold. We show that all potential submanifolds bear natural special structures of Frobenius algebras on their tangent spaces. These special Frobenius structures are generated by the corresponding flat first fundamental form and the set of the second fundamental forms of the submani…
I.A.B. Strachan introduced the notion of a natural Frobenius submanifold of a Frobenius manifold and gave a sufficient but not necessary condition for a submanifold to be a natural Frobenius submanifold. This paper will give a necessary and sufficient condition and classify the natural Frobenius hypersurfaces.
We introduce a class of k-potential submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean spaces and prove that for an arbitrary positive integer k and an arbitrary nonnegative integer p, each N-dimensional Frobenius manifold can always be locally realized as an N-dimensional k-potential submanifold in ((k + 1) N + p)-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean spaces of certain signatures. For k = 1 this construction was proposed by the present author in a previous paper (2006). The realization of concrete Frobenius manifolds is reduced to solving a consistent linear system of second-order partial differential equations.
We construct some explicit quasihomogeneous algebraic solutions to the associativity (WDVV) equations by using analytical methods of the finite gap integration theory. These solutions are expanded in the uniform way to non-semisimple Frobenius manifolds.
A general scheme for construction of flat pencils of contravariant metrics and Frobenius manifolds as well as related solutions to WDVV associativity equations is formulated. The advantage is taken from the Rota-Baxter identity and some relation being counterpart of the modified Yang-Baxter identity from the classical $r$-matrix formalism. The scheme for the construction of Frobenius manifolds is illustrated on the algebras of formal Laurent series and meromorphic functions on Riemann sphere.
We give a geometric interpretation of weighted homogeneous solutions to the associativity equation in terms of the web theory and construct a massive Frobenius 3-fold germ via a singular 3-web germ satisfying the following conditions: 1) the web germ admits at least one infinitesimal symmetry, 2) the Chern connection form is holomorphic, 3) the curvature form vanishes identically.
This article investigates local properties of the further generalized Weierstrass relations for a spin manifold $S$ immersed in a higher dimensional spin manifold $M$ from viewpoint of study of submanifold quantum mechanics. We show that kernel of a certain Dirac operator defined over $S$, which we call submanifold Dirac operator, gives the data of the immersion. In the derivation, the simple Frobenius reciprocity of Clifford algebras $S$ and $M$ plays important roles.
We construct flat 3-webs via semi-simple geometric Frobenius manifolds of dimension three and give geometric interpretation of the Chern connection of the web. These webs turned out to be biholomorphic to the characteristic webs on the solutions of the corresponding associativity equation. We show that such webs are hexagonal and admit at least one infinitesimal symmetry at each singular point. Singularities of the web are also discussed.
The associativity of the multiplication on a Frobenius manifold is equivalent to the WDVV equation of a symmetric cubic form in flat coordinates. Frobenius manifold could be regarded a very special type of statistical manifold. There is a natural commutative product on each tangent space of a statistical manifold. We show that it is associative, hence making it into a manifold with Frobenius algebra structure, if and only if the sectional $K$-curvature vanishes. In other words, WDVV equation is equivalent to zero sectional $K$-curvature. This gives a curvature interpretation for WDVV equation.
Recently, it has been shown that the statistical manifold, related to exponential families, has a Frobenius manifold structure and appears as the fourth class of Frobenius manifolds. It has a structure of a projective manifold over a rank two Frobenius algebra $\frak{A}$, being the algebra of paracomplex numbers and generated by $1, ε$ such that $ε^2=1$. This result is a key step towards an algebraization of the results concerning the manifold of probability distributions and thus offers a new perspective on it. In this paper, we prove that the fourth Frobenius manifold is decomposed into a pa…
We discover a geometric property of the space of tensors of fixed multilinear (Tucker) rank. Namely, it is shown that real tensors of fixed multilinear rank form a minimal submanifold of the Euclidean space of tensors endowed with the Frobenius inner product. We also establish the absence of local extrema for linear functionals restricted to the submanifold of rank-one tensors, finding application in statistics.
Given a flat metric one may generate a local Hamiltonian structure via the fundamental result of Dubrovin and Novikov. More generally, a flat pencil of metrics will generate a local bi-Hamiltonian structure, and with additional quasi-homogeneity conditions one obtains the structure of a Frobenius manifold. With appropriate curvature conditions one may define a curved pencil of compatible metrics and these give rise to an associated non-local bi-Hamiltonian structure. Specific examples include the F-manifolds of Hertling and Manin equipped with an invariant metric. In this paper the geometry su…
