In Theorem 1.2 of the paper math.GT/0002110 the author claimed to have proved that all transversal knots whose topological knot type is that of an iterated torus knot (we call them cable knots) are transversally simple. That theorem is false, and the Erratum math.GT/0610565 identifies the gap. The purpose of this paper is to explore the situation more deeply, in order to pinpoint exactly which cable knots are {\it not} transversally simple. The class is subtle and interesting. We will recover the strength of the main theorem in math.GT/0002110, in the sense that we will be able to prove a strong theorem about cable knots, but the theorem itself is more subtle than Theorem 1.2 of math.GT/0002110.
In particular, we give a geometric realization of the Honda-Etnyre transverse (2,3)-cable of the (2,3)-torus knot example (Appendix joint with H. Matsuda). (See math.SG/0306330)
The present paper is an addendum to "Spherical structures on torus knots and links", arXiv:1008.0312, and concerns more general case of torus knot and link cone-manifolds.
Dror Bar-Natan and Ofer Ron have questioned the accuracy of the statement on page 453, line 2 minus of my paper "Groups of Ribbon Knots", Topology Vol 37, No. 2, 441-458, that "It follows from the inductive proof that $\cal{R}_n$ is of index 2." See their article posted on arXiv: math.GT/0309282. We give here full details of how to carry out the inductive step.
In math.GT/0002110 the author's Theorems 1.1 and 1.2, combined, implied that iterated torus knots are transversally simple. This result is in error and this erratum pin points the error. In "An addendum on iterated torus knots" a more subtle result is proven resulting in giving a geometric realization of the Honda-Etnyre transverse (2,3)-cable of the (2,3)-torus knot example--Appendix joint with H. Matsuda. (See math.SG/0306330 and math.GT/0610566.)

Algebraic knots are known to be iterated torus knots and to admit L-space surgeries. However, Hedden proved that there are iterated torus knots that admit L-space surgeries but are not algebraic. We present an infinite family of such examples, with the additional property that no nontrivial linear combination of knots in this family is concordant to a linear combination of algebraic knots. The proof uses the Ozsvath-Stipsicz-Szabo Upsilon function, and also introduces a new invariant of L-space knots, the formal semigroup.
We determine the set of all genus g bridge numbers of many iterated torus knots, listing these numbers in a sequence called the bridge spectrum. In addition, we prove a structural lemma about the decomposition of a strongly irreducible bridge surface induced by cutting along a collection of essential surfaces.
We calculate the asymptotic behavior of the Kashaev invariant of a twice-itarated torus knot and obtain topological interpretation of the formula in terms of the Chern--Simons invariant and the twisted Reidemeister torsion.
We calculate the twisted Reidemeister torsion of the complement of an iterated torus knot associated with a representation of its fundamental group to the complex special linear group of degree two. We also show that the twisted Reidemeister torsions associated with various representations appear in the asymptotic expansion of the colored Jones polynomial.
We prove that an iterated torus knot type fails the uniform thickness property (UTP) if and only if all of its iterations are positive cablings, which is precisely when an iterated torus knot type supports the standard contact structure. We also show that all iterated torus knots that fail the UTP support cabling knot types that are transversely non-simple.
We give an explicit construction of linearly independent families of knots arbitrarily deep in the (n)-solvable filtration of the knot concordance group using the ρ^1-invariant. A difference between previous constructions of infinite rank subgroups in the concordance group and ours is that the deepest infecting knots in the construction we present are allowed to have vanishing Tristram-Levine signatures.
We prove that the class of topological knot types that are both Legendrian simple and satisfy the uniform thickness property (UTP) is closed under cabling. An immediate application is that all iterated cabling knot types that begin with negative torus knots are Legendrian simple. We also examine, for arbitrary numbers of iterations, iterated cablings that begin with positive torus knots, and establish the Legendrian simplicity of large classes of these knot types, many of which also satisfy the UTP. In so doing we obtain new necessary conditions for both the failure of the UTP and Legendrian n…
A knot type is exchange reducible if an arbitrary closed n-braid representative can be changed to a closed braid of minimum braid index by a finite sequence of braid isotopies, exchange moves and +/- destabilizations. In the manuscript [J Birman and NC Wrinkle, On transversally simple knots, preprint (1999)] a transversal knot in the standard contact structure for S^3 is defined to be transversally simple if it is characterized up to transversal isotopy by its topological knot type and its self-linking number. Theorem 2 of Birman and Wrinkle [op cit] establishes that exchange reducibility impl…
We give a new geometric obstruction to the iterated Bing double of a knot being a slice link: for n>1 the (n+1)-st iterated Bing double of a knot is rationally slice if and only if the n-th iterated Bing double of the knot is rationally slice. The main technique of the proof is a covering link construction simplifying a given link. We prove certain similar geometric obstructions for n <= 1 as well. Our results are sharp enough to conclude, when combined with algebraic invariants, that if the n-th iterated Bing double of a knot is slice for some n, then the knot is algebraically slice. Also our…
A generalization of the volume conjecture relates the asymptotic behavior of the colored Jones polynomial of a knot to the Chern--Simons invariant and the Reidemeister torsion of the knot complement associated with a representation of the fundamental group to the special linear group of degree two over complex numbers. If the knot is hyperbolic, the representation can be regarded as a deformation of the holonomy representation that determines the complete hyperbolic structure. In this article we study a similar phenomenon when the knot is a twice-iterated torus knot. In this case, the asymptot…
For a genus-1 1-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, that is, a (1,1)-knot, a middle tunnel is a tunnel that is not an upper or lower tunnel for some (1,1)-position. Most torus knots have a middle tunnel, and non-torus-knot examples were obtained by Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara. In a previous paper, we generalized their construction and calculated the slope invariants for the resulting examples. We give an iterated version of the construction that produces many more examples, and calculate their slope invariants. If one starts with the trivial knot, the iterated constructions produce all the 2-bridge k…
We study the behavior of the degree of the colored Jones polynomial and the boundary slopes of knots under the operation of cabling. We show that, under certain hypothesis on this degree, if a knot $K$ satisfies the Slope Conjecture then a $(p, q)$-cable of $K$ satisfies the conjecture, provided that $p/q$ is not a Jones slope of $K$. As an application we prove the Slope Conjecture for iterated cables of adequate knots and for iterated torus knots. Furthermore we show that, for these knots, the degree of the colored Jones polynomial also determines the topology of a surface that satisfies the …
Let $D(K)$ be the positively-clasped untwisted Whitehead double of a knot $K$, and $T_{p,q}$ be the $(p,q)$ torus knot. We show that $D(T_{2,2m+1})$ and $D^2(T_{2,2m+1})$ are linearly independent in the smooth knot concordance group $\mathcal{C}$ for each $m\geq 2$. Further, $D(T_{2,5})$ and $D^2(T_{2,5})$ generate a $\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}$ summand in the subgroup of $\mathcal{C}$ generated by topologically slice knots. We use the concordance invariant $δ$ of Manolescu and Owens, using Heegaard Floer correction term. Interestingly, these results are not easily shown using other concordanc…
We obtain new invariants of topological link concordance and homology cobordism of 3-manifolds from Hirzebruch-type intersection form defects of towers of iterated p-covers. Our invariants can extract geometric information from an arbitrary depth of the derived series of the fundamental group, and can detect torsion which is invisible via signature invariants. Applications illustrating these features include the following: (1) There are infinitely many homology equivalent rational 3-spheres which are indistinguishable via multisignatures, eta-invariants, and L2-signatures but have distinct hom…
We give a formula of the Upsilon invariant of any L-space cable knot $K_{p,q}$ using $p,Υ_K$ and $Υ_{T_{p,q}}$. The integral value of the Upsilon invariant gives a ${\mathbb Q}$-valued knot concordance invariant. We compute the integral values for L-space iterated cable knots.
A theorem of Furuta and Fintushel-Stern provides a criterion for a collection of Seifert fibred homology spheres to be independent in the homology cobordism group of oriented homology 3-spheres. In this article we use these results and some 4-dimensional constructions to produce infinite families of positive torus knots whose iterated Whitehead doubles are independent in the smooth concordance group.
Let $M$ be an irreducible, compact, connected, orientable 3-manifold whose boundary is a torus. We show that if $M$ is hyperbolic, then it admits at most six finite/cyclic fillings of maximal distance 5. Further, the distance of a finite/cyclic filling to a cyclic filling is at most 2. If $M$ has a non-boundary-parallel, incompressible torus and is not a generalized 1-iterated torus knot complement, then there are at most three finite/cyclic fillings of maximal distance 1. Further, if $M$ has a non-boundary-parallel, incompressible torus and is not a generalized 1- or 2-iterated torus knot com…
Let K be a knot in S^3. We study the iterated Bing doubles of K, giving a new proof for the following statement: If BD_n(K) is slice for some n, then K is algebraically slice. This result was first proved by Cha and Kim using covering link calculus. We also use this tool, but our proof is substantially simpler and illuminates several generalizations.
We define a nontrivial mod 2 valued additive concordance invariant defined on the torsion subgroup of the knot concordance group using involutive knot Floer package. For knots not contained in its kernel, we prove that their iterated $(\text{odd},1)$-cables have infinite order in the concordance group and, among them, infinitely many are linearly independent. Furthermore, by taking $(2,1)$-cables of the aforementioned knots, we present an infinite family of knots which are strongly rationally slice but not slice.
We show that a $(p,q)$-cable of a non-trivial knot $K$ does not admit chirally cosmetic surgery for $q\neq 2$, or $q=2$ with additional assumptions. In particular, we show that $(p,q)$-cable of non-trivial knot $K$ does not admit chirally cosmetic surgery as long as the JSJ piece of knot exterior does not contain $(2,r)$-torus exterior. We also show that an iterated torus knot other than $(2,p)$-torus knot does not admit chirally cosmetic surgery.
Cha and Kim proved that if a knot K is not algebraically slice, then no iterated Bing double of K is concordant to the unlink. We prove that if K has nontrivial signature $σ$, then the n-iterated Bing double of K is not concordant to any boundary link with boundary surfaces of genus less than $2^{n-1}σ$. The same result holds with $σ$ replaced by $2τ$, twice the Ozsvath-Szabo knot concordance invariant.
The unknotting number of knots is a difficult quantity to compute, and even its behavior under basic satelliting operations is not understood. We establish a lower bound on the unknotting number of cable knots and iterated cable knots purely in terms of the winding number of the pattern. The proof uses Alishahi-Eftekhary's bounds on unknotting number from knot Floer homology together with Hanselman-Watson's computation of the knot Floer homology of cables in terms of immersed curves in the punctured torus.
We define a concordance invariant, epsilon(K), associated to the knot Floer complex of K, and give a formula for the Ozsváth-Szabó concordance invariant tau of K_{p,q}, the (p,q)-cable of a knot K, in terms of p, q, tau(K), and epsilon(K). We also describe the behavior of epsilon under cabling, allowing one to compute tau of iterated cables. Various properties and applications of epsilon are also discussed.
In this paper, we define a lassoing on a link, a local addition of a trivial knot to a link. Let K be an s-component link with the Conway polynomial non-zero. Let L be a link which is obtained from K by r-iterated lassoings. The complete splitting number split(L) is greater than or equal to r+s-1, and less than or equal to r+split(K). In particular, we obtain from a knot by r-iterated component-lassoings an algebraically completely splittable link L with split(L)=r. Moreover, we construct a link L whose unlinking number is greater than split(L).
In this paper, we study the behavior of $Υ_K(t)$ under the cabling operation, where $Υ_K(t)$ is the knot concordance invariant defined by Ozsváth, Stipsicz, and Szabó, associated to a knot $K\subset S^3$. The main result is an inequality relating $Υ_K(t)$ and $Υ_{K_{p,q}}(t)$, which generalizes the inequalities of Hedden and Van Cott on the Ozsváth-Szabó $τ$-invariant. As applications, we give a computation of $Υ_{(T_{2,-3})_{2,2n+1}}(t)$ for $n\geq 8$, and we also show that the set of iterated $(p,1)$-cables of $Wh^{+}(T_{2,3})$ for any $p\geq 2$ span an infinite-rank summand of topologically…
We prove that if positive integer p-surgery along a knot K \subset S^3 produces an L-space and it bounds a sharp 4-manifold, then the knot genus obeys the bound 2g(K) -1 \leq p - \sqrt{3p+1}. Moreover, there exists an infinite family of pairs (K_n,p_n) attaining this bound, where K_n denotes an n-fold iterated cable of the unknot and p_n \to \infty. In particular, the stated bound applies when the knot surgery produces a lens space or a connected sum thereof. Combined with work of Gordon-Luecke, Hoffman, and Matignon-Sayari, it follows that if surgery along a knot produces a connected sum of l…
Final revision. To appear in the Journal of Differential Geometry. This paper studies knots that are transversal to the standard contact structure in $\reals^3$, bringing techniques from topological knot theory to bear on their transversal classification. We say that a transversal knot type $\cTK$ is {\it transversally simple} if it is determined by its topological knot type $\cK$ and its Bennequin number. The main theorem asserts that any $\cTK$ whose associated $\cK$ satisfies a condition that we call {\em exchange reducibility} is transversally simple. As a first application, we prove that …
We extend the construction of the DAHA-Jones polynomials for any reduced root systems and DAHA-superpolynomials in type A from the iterated torus knots (our previous paper) to links, including arbitrary algebraic links. Such a passage essentially corresponds to the usage of the products of Macdonald polynomials and is directly connected to the so-called splice diagrams. The specialization t=q of our superpolynomials conjecturally results in the HOMFLY-PT polynomials. The relation of our construction to the stable Khovanov-Rozansky polynomials and the so-called ORS-polynomials of the correspond…
