Lusztig conjectured that the almost characters of a finite reductive group are up to a scalar the same as the characteristic functions of the rational character sheaves defined on the corresponding algebraic group. We propose in this paper to verify this conjecture for the uniform almost characters of the Suzuki and the Ree groups and to show that a conjecture of the same type holds for the disconnected case of type B_2. We then state a conjecture on the possible values of the uniform almost characters on unipotent elements in the disconnected case of type F_4.
Let $G$ be a non-connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ and let $D$ be a connected component of $G$. We investigate Jordan classes of $D$ and we obtain a description of the regular part of the closure of a Jordan class in terms of induction of $G^{\circ}$-orbits. We use this result to show that Lusztig strata in a non-connected reductive algebraic group are locally closed.
We determine the cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to some short-length regular elements for split groups of type F4 and En. As a byproduct, we obtain conjectural Brauer trees for the principal Phi_{14}-block of E7 and the principal Phi_{24}-block of E8.
We develop and study a Lefschetz theory in a combinatorial category associated to a root system and derive an upper bound on the exceptional characteristics for Lusztig's formula for the simple rational characters of a reductive algebraic group. Our bound is huge compared to the Coxeter number. It is, however, given by an explicit formula.
The 2-parameter Green functions occur as a crucial ingredient in the character formula for Lusztig induction in finite reductive groups. Still, very little is known about these functions, in particular in the case of groups arsing from algebraic groups with disconnected centre. We collect some basic properties and then apply these, together with some explicit computations, to determine all 2-parameter Green functions for 8-dimensional spin groups in odd characteristic, whose centre is disconnected of order~4.
We give the defining structure of two-parameter quantum group of type G_2 defined over a field {\Bbb Q}(r,s) (with r\ne s), and prove the Drinfel'd double structure as its upper and lower triangular parts, extending an earlier result of [BW1] in type A and a recent result of [BGH1] in types B, C, D. We further discuss the Lusztig's Q-isomorphisms from U_{r,s}(G_2) to its associated object U_{s^{-1},r^{-1}}(G_2), which give rise to the usual Lusztig's symmetries defined not only on U_q(G_2) but also on the centralized quantum group U_q^c(G_2) only when r=s^{-1}=q. (This also reflects the distin…
We introduce graded Hecke algebras H based on a (possibly disconnected) complex reductive group G and a cuspidal local system L on a unipotent orbit of a Levi subgroup M of G. These generalize the graded Hecke algebras defined and investigated by Lusztig for connected G. We develop the representation theory of the algebras H. obtaining complete and canonical parametrizations of the irreducible, the irreducible tempered and the discrete series representations. All the modules are constructed in terms of perverse sheaves and equivariant homology, relying on work of Lusztig. The parameters come d…
Using truncated convolution of perverse sheaves on a flag variety Lusztig associated a monoidal category to a two sided cell in the Weyl group. We identify this category in the case which was not decided previously.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group defined over a finite field of good characteristic, with associated Frobenius endomorphism $F$. In this article we extend an observation of Lusztig, (which gives a numerical relationship between an ordinary character of $G^F$ and its unipotent support), to the case where $Z(G)$ is disconnected. We then use this observation in some applications to the ordinary character theory of $G^F$.
We define an involution on the space of elliptic unipotent Langlands parameters of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$ and verify that when $G$ is split adjoint exceptional, the composition of this involution with the hyperspecial parahoric restriction map agrees with Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform for unipotent representations of the finite reductive quotient. This is inspired by recent works of Lusztig on the almost unipotent characters of $p$-adic groups and of Moeglin and Waldspurger on the elliptic Fourier transform of odd orthogonal groups.
We discuss various computational issues around the problem of determining the character values of finite Chevalley groups, in the framework provided by Lusztig's theory of character sheaves. Some of the remaining open questions (concerning certain roots of unity) for the cuspidal unipotent character sheaves of groups of exceptional type are resolved.
In 1979, Kazhdan and Lusztig introduced the notion of "cells" (left, right and two-sided) for a Coxeter group $W$, a concept with numerous applications in Lie theory and around. Here, we address algorithmic aspects of this theory for finite $W$ which are important in applications, e.g., run explicitly through all left cells, determine the values of Lusztig's $\ba$-function, identify the characters of left cell representations. The aim is to show how type $E_8$ (the largest group of exceptional type) can be handled systematically and efficiently, too. This allows us, for the first time, to solv…
For a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra and a root of unity, Lusztig defined an infinite dimensional quantum group of divided powers. Under certain restrictions on the order of the root of unity, he constructed a Frobenius homomorphism with finite dimensional Hopf kernel and with image the universal enveloping algebra. In this article we define and describe the Frobenius homomorphism for arbitrary roots of unity by systematically using the theory of Nichols algebras. In several new exceptional cases the Frobenius-Lusztig kernel is associated to a different Lie algebra than the initial …
Let $G$ be a simple, simply connected algebraic group of exceptional type defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with Frobenius endomorphism $F: G \to G$. Let $\ell \nmid q$ be a good prime for $G$. We determine the number of irreducible Brauer characters in the quasi-isolated $\ell$-blocks of $G^F$. This is done by proving that generalized $e$-Harish-Chandra theory holds for the Lusztig series associated to quasi-isolated elements of $G^{*F}$.
We relate a certain category of sheaves of k-vector spaces on a complex affine Schubert variety to modules over the k-Lie algebra (for ch k>0) or to modules over the small quantum group (for ch k=0) associated to the Langlands dual root datum. As an application we give a new proof of Lusztig's conjecture on quantum characters and on modular characters for almost all characteristics. Moreover, we relate the geometric and representation theoretic sides to sheaves on the underlying moment graph, which allows us to extend the known instances of Lusztig's modular conjecture in two directions: We gi…
The formal degree of a unipotent discrete series character of a simple linear algebraic group over a non-archimedean local field (in the sense of Lusztig), is a rational function of the cardinality q of the residue field. The irreducible factors of this rational function are $q$ and cyclotomic polynomials. We prove that the formal degree of a supercuspidal unipotent representation determines its Lusztig-Langlands parameter, up to twisting by weakly unramified characters. For split exceptional groups this result follows from the work of Mark Reeder, and for the remaining exceptional cases this …
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$, and let Lie$(G)$ be its associated Lie algebra. In his series of papers on unipotent elements in small characteristic, Lusztig defined a partition of the unipotent variety of $G$. This partition is very useful when working with representations of $G$. Equivalently, one can consider certain subsets of the nilpotent variety of Lie$(G)$ called pieces. This approach appears in Lusztig's article from 2011. The pieces for the exceptional groups of type $G_2$, $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$ in bad charac…
According to the Ringel-Green Theorem([G],[R1]), the generic composition algebra of the Hall algebra provides a realization of the positive part of the quantum group. Furthermore, its Drinfeld double can be identified with the whole quantum group([X],[XY]), in which the BGP-reflection functors coincide with Lusztig's symmetries. We first assert the elements corresponding to exceptional modules lie in the integral generic composition algebra, hence in the integral form of the quantum group. Then we prove that these elements lie in the crystal basis up to a sign. Eventually we show that the sign…
We determine the unitary dual of the geometric graded Hecke algebras with {unequal} parameters which appear in Lusztig's classification of unipotent representations for {exceptional} $p$-adic groups. The largest such algebra is of type $F_4.$ Via the Barbasch-Moy correspondence of unitarity applied to this setting, this is equivalent to the identification of the corresponding unitary unipotent representations with real central character of the $p$-adic groups. In order for this correspondence to be applicable here, we show (following Lusztig's geometric classification, and Barbasch and Moy's o…
Let $G(q)$ be a finite group of Lie type over a field with $q$ elements, where $q$ is a prime power. The Green functions of $G(q)$, as defined by Deligne and Lusztig, are known in \textit{almost} all cases by work of Beynon--Spaltenstein, Lusztig und Shoji. Open cases exist for groups of exceptional type ${^2\!E}_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$ in small characteristics. We propose a general method for dealing with these cases, which procedes by a reduction to the case where $q$ is a prime and then uses computer algebra techniques. In this way, all open cases in type ${^2\!E}_6$, $E_7$ are solved, as well as …
Following the generalization of the notion of families of characters, defined by Lusztig for Weyl groups, to the case of complex reflection groups, thanks to the definition given by Rouquier, we show that the degree and the valuation of the Schur elements (functions A and a) remain constant on the "families" of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras of the exceptional complex reflection groups. The same result has already been obtained for the groups of the infinite series and for some special cases of exceptional groups.
Let ${\mathbf G}^F$ be a finite group of Lie type, where ${\mathbf G}$ is a reductive group defined over ${\overline{\mathbb F}_q}$ and $F$ is a Frobenius root. Lusztig's Jordan decomposition parametrises the irreducible characters in a rational series${\mathcal E}({{\mathbf G}^F},(s)_{{\mathbf G}^{*F^*}})$ where $s\in{{\mathbf G}^{*F^*}}$ by the series ${\mathcal E}(C_{{\mathbf G}^*}(s)^{F^*},1)$.We conjecture that the Shintani twisting preserves the space of class functions generated by the union of the ${\mathcal E}({{\mathbf G}^F},(s')_{{\mathbf G}^{*F^*}})$ where$(s')_{{\mathbf G}^{*F^*}}…
The coinvariant algebra of a Weyl group plays a fundamental role in several areas of mathematics. The fake degrees are the graded multiplicities of the irreducible modules of a Weyl group in its coinvariant algebra, and they were computed by Steinberg, Lusztig and Beynon-Lusztig. In this paper we formulate a notion of spin coinvariant algebra for every Weyl group. Then we compute all the spin fake degrees for each classical Weyl group, which are by definition the graded multiplicities of the simple modules of a spin Weyl group in the spin coinvariant algebra. The spin fake degrees for the exce…
In this paper we study a toy categorical version of Lusztig's induction and restriction functors for character sheaves, but in the abstract setting of multifusion categories. Let $\mathscr{C}$ be an indecomposable multifusion category and let $\mathscr{M}$ be an invertible $\mathscr{C}$-bimodule category. Then the center $\mathscr{Z}_{\mathscr{C}}(\mathscr{M})$ of $\mathscr{M}$ with respect to $\mathscr{C}$ is an invertible module category over the Drinfeld center $\mathscr{Z}(\mathscr{C})$ which is a braided fusion category. Let $ζ_{\mathscr{M}}:\mathscr{Z}_{\mathscr{C}}(\mathscr{M})\longrigh…
This paper has two main results. Firstly, we complete the parametrisation of all p-blocks of finite quasi-simple groups by finding the so-called quasi-isolated blocks of exceptional groups of Lie type for bad primes. This relies on the explicit decomposition of Lusztig induction from suitable Levi subgroups. Our second major result is the proof of one direction of Brauer's long-standing height zero conjecture on blocks of finite groups, using the reduction by Berger and Knörr to the quasi-simple situation. We also use our result on blocks to verify a conjecture of Malle and Navarro on nilpoten…
Let $G(q)$ be a Chevalley group over a finite field $F_q$. By Lusztig's and Shoji's work, the problem of computing the values of the unipotent characters of $G(q)$ is solved, in principle, by the theory of character sheaves; one issue in this solution is the determination of certain scalars relating two types of class functions on $G(q)$. We show that this issue can be reduced to the case where $q$ is a prime, which opens the way to use computer algebra methods. Here, and in a sequel to this article, we use this approach to solve a number of cases in groups of exceptional type which seemed hit…
The families of characters, defined by Lusztig for Weyl groups, play an important role in the representation theory of finite reductive groups. The definition of Rouquier for the families of characters in terms of blocks of the Hecke algebra has made possible the generalization of this notion to the case of complex reflection groups. In this article, we study the Rouquier blocks of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras and we show that they depend on numerical data determined by the generic Hecke algebra. Moreover, we provide the algorithm and the results of their determination for all exceptional com…
With a view to determining character values of finite reductive groups at unipotent elements, we prove a number of results concerning inner products of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters with characteristic functions of character sheaves, here called Lusztig functions. These are used to determine projections of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters to the space of unipo- tent characters, and to the space of characters with a given wave front set. Such projections are expressed largely in terms of Weyl group data. We show how the values of characters at their unipotent support or wave front se…
