We show that the total variation mixing time of the simple random walk on the giant component of supercritical Erdos-Renyi graphs is log^2 n. This statement was only recently proved, independently, by Fountoulakis and Reed. Our proof follows from a structure result for these graphs which is interesting in its own right. We show that these graphs are "decorated expanders" - an expander glued to graphs whose size has constant expectation and exponential tail, and such that each vertex in the expander is glued to no more than a constant number of decorations.
We present and investigate a general model for inhomogeneous random digraphs with labeled vertices, where the arcs are generated independently, and the probability of inserting an arc depends on the labels of its endpoints and its orientation. For this model the critical point for the emergence of a giant component is determined via a branching process approach.
In 2004, Frieze, Krivelevich and Martin [17] established the emergence of a giant component in random subgraphs of pseudo-random graphs. We study several typical properties of the giant component, most notably its expansion characteristics. We establish an asymptotic vertex expansion of connected sets in the giant by a factor of $\tilde{O}\left(ε^2\right)$. From these expansion properties, we derive that the diameter of the giant is typically $O_ε\left(\log n\right)$, and that the mixing time of a lazy random walk on the giant is asymptotically $O_ε\left(\log^2 n\right)$. We also show similar …
We study the robustness under perturbations of mixing times, by studying mixing times of random walks in percolation clusters inside boxes in $\Z^d$. We show that for $d \geq 2$ and $p > p_c(\Z^d)$, the mixing time of simple random walk on the largest cluster inside $\{-n,...,n\}^d$ is $Θ(n^2)$ - thus the mixing time is robust up to constant factor.
Consider the random walk on the permutation group obtained when the step distribution is uniform on a given conjugacy class. It is shown that there is a critical time at which two phase transitions occur simultaneously. On the one hand, the random walk slows down abruptly (i.e., the acceleration drops from 0 to -\infty at this time as n tends to \infty). On the other hand, the largest cycle size changes from microscopic to giant. The proof of this last result is both considerably simpler and more general than in a previous result of Oded Schramm (2005) for random transpositions. It turns out t…
We establish central and local limit theorems for the number of vertices in the largest component of a random $d$-uniform hypergraph $\hnp$ with edge probability $p=c/\binnd$, where $(d-1)^{-1}+\eps<c<\infty$. The proof relies on a new, purely probabilistic approach, and is based on Stein's method as well as exposing the edges of $H_d(n,p)$ in several rounds.
We study the joint components in a random `double graph' that is obtained by superposing red and blue binomial random graphs on $n$~vertices. A joint component is a maximal set of vertices, which contains both a red and a blue spanning tree. We show that there are critical pairs of red and blue edge densities at which a joint-giant component appears. In contrast to the standard binomial graph model, the phase transition is first order: the size of the largest joint component jumps from $O(1)$ vertices to $Θ(n)$ at the critical point. We connect this phenomenon to the properties of a certain bi…
We prove a moderate deviations principles for the size of the largest connected component in a random $d$-uniform hypergraph. The key tool is a version of the exploration process, that is also used to investigate the giant component of an Erdös-Rényi graph, a moderate deviations principle for the martingale associated with this exploration process, and exponential estimates.
Consider a random directed graph on $n$ vertices with independent identically distributed outdegrees with distribution $F$ having mean $μ$, and destinations of arcs selected uniformly at random. We show that if $μ>1$ then for large $n$ there is very likely to be a unique giant strong component with proportionate size given as the product of two branching process survival probabilities, one with offspring distribution $F$ and the other with Poisson offspring distribution with mean $μ$. If $μ\leq 1$ there is very likely to be no giant strong component. We also extend this to allow for $F$ varyin…
We study the simple random walk on the giant component of a supercritical Erdős-Rényi random graph on $n$ vertices, in particular the so-called vacant set at level $u$, the complement of the trajectory of the random walk run up to a time proportional to $u$ and $n$. We show that the component structure of the vacant set exhibits a phase transition at a critical parameter $u_{\star}$: For $u<u_{\star}$ the vacant set has with high probability a unique giant component of order $n$ and all other components small, of order at most $\log^{7}n$, whereas for $u>u_{\star}$ it has with high probability…
Recently, we adapted random walk arguments based on work of Nachmias and Peres, Martin-Löf, Karp and Aldous to give a simple proof of the asymptotic normality of the size of the giant component in the random graph $G(n,p)$ above the phase transition. Here we show that the same method applies to the analogous model of random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, establishing asymptotic normality throughout the (sparse) supercritical regime. Previously, asymptotic normality was known only towards the two ends of this regime.
We prove that every random walk in a uniformly elliptic random environment satisfying the cone mixing condition and a non-effective polynomial ballisticity condition with high enough degree has an asymptotic direction.
We study a dynamical random network model in which at every construction step a new vertex is introduced and attached to every existing vertex independently with a probability proportional to a concave function f of its current degree. We give a criterion for the existence of a giant component, which is both necessary and sufficient, and which becomes explicit when f is linear. Otherwise it allows the derivation of explicit necessary and sufficient conditions, which are often fairly close. We give an explicit criterion to decide whether the giant component is robust under random removal of edg…
We consider random walks in strong-mixing random Gibbsian environments in $\mathbb{Z}^d, d\ge 2$. Based on regeneration arguments, we will first provide an alternative proof of Rassoul-Agha's conditional law of large numbers (CLLN) for mixing environment Rassoul-Agha (2005). Then, using coupling techniques, we show that there is at most one nonzero limiting velocity in high dimensions ($d\ge 5$).
We prove an upper bound of $1.5324 n \log n$ for the mixing time of the random-to-random insertion shuffle, improving on the best known upper bound of $2 n \log n$. Our proof is based on the analysis of a non-Markovian coupling.
In this work we present different results concerning mixing properties of multivariate infinitely divisible (ID) stationary random fields. First, we derive some necessary and sufficient conditions for mixing of stationary ID multivariate random fields in terms of their spectral representation. Second, we prove that (linear combinations of independent) mixed moving average fields are mixing. Further, using a simple modification of the proofs of our results we are able to obtain weak mixing versions of our results. Finally, we prove the equivalence of ergodicity and weak mixing for multivariate …
We prove a law of large numbers for a class of multidimensional random walks in random environments where the environment satisfies appropriate mixing conditions, which hold when the environment is a weak mixing field in the sense of Dobrushin and Shlosman. Our result holds if the mixing rate balances moments of some random times depending on the path. It applies in the non-nestling case, but we also provide examples of nestling walks that satisfy our assumptions. The derivation is based on an adaptation, using coupling, of the regeneration argument of Sznitman-Zerner.
A split tree of cardinality $n$ is constructed by distributing $n$ "balls" in a subset of vertices of an infinite tree which encompasses many types of random trees such as $m$-ary search trees, quad trees, median-of-$(2k+1)$ trees, fringe-balanced trees, digital search trees and random simplex trees. In this work, we study Bernoulli bond percolation on arbitrary split trees of large but finite cardinality $n$. We show for appropriate percolation regimes that depend on the cardinality $n$ of the split tree that there exists a unique giant cluster, the fluctuations of the size of the giant clust…
We construct a two-dimensional counterexample of a random walk in random environment (RWRE). The environment is stationary, mixing and perturbative, and the corresponding RWRE has non-trivial probability to wander off to the upper right. This is in contrast to the 0-1-law that holds for i.i.d.\ environments.
In this paper we study the asymptotic normality of the normalized partial sum of a Hilbert-space valued strictly stationary random field satisfying the interlaced $ρ'$-mixing condition.
For a given pair of positive integers $d$ and $N$ with $N \geq 2$, for strictly stationary random fields that are indexed by the $d$-dimensional integer lattice and satisfy $N$-tuplewise independence, the dependence coefficients associated with the $ρ$-, $ρ'$-, and $ρ^*$-mixing conditions can decay together at an arbitrary rate. Another, closely related result is also established. In particular, these constructions provide classes of examples pertinent to limit theory for random fields that involve such mixing conditions together with certain types of "extra" assumptions on the marginal and bi…
We consider a Bernoulli bond percolation on a random recursive tree of size $n\gg 1$, with supercritical parameter $p_n=1-c/\ln n$ for some $c>0$ fixed. It is known that with high probability, there exists then a unique giant cluster of size $G_n\sim \e^{-c}$, and it follows from a recent result of Schweinsberg \cite{Sch} that $G_n$ has non-gaussian fluctuations. We provide an explanation of this by analyzing the effect of percolation on different phases of the growth of recursive trees. This alternative approach may be useful for studying percolation on other classes of trees, such as for ins…
If we pick $n$ random points uniformly in $[0,1]^d$ and connect each point to its $k-$nearest neighbors, then it is well known that there exists a giant connected component with high probability. We prove that in $[0,1]^d$ it suffices to connect every point to $ c_{d,1} \log{\log{n}}$ points chosen randomly among its $ c_{d,2} \log{n}-$nearest neighbors to ensure a giant component of size $n - o(n)$ with high probability. This construction yields a much sparser random graph with $\sim n \log\log{n}$ instead of $\sim n \log{n}$ edges that has comparable connectivity properties. This result has …
We prove that random walks in random environments, that are exponentially mixing in space and time, are almost surely diffusive, in the sense that their scaling limit is given by the Wiener measure.
