We derive sufficient conditions for a family $(X^n,ρ_n,P_n)$ of metric probability spaces to have the measure concentration property. Specifically, if the sequence $\{P_n\}$ of probability measures satisfies a strong mixing condition (which we call $η$-mixing) and the sequence of metrics $\{ρ_n\}$ is what we call $Ψ$-dominated, we show that $(X^n,ρ_n,P_n)$ is a normal Levy family. We establish these properties for some metric probability spaces, including the possibly novel $X=[0,1]$, $ρ_n=\ell_1$ case.
We consider Markovian models on graphs with local dynamics. We show that, under suitable conditions, such Markov chains exhibit both rapid convergence to equilibrium and strong concentration of measure in the stationary distribution. We illustrate our results with applications to some known chains from computer science and statistical mechanics.
We generalise the coarse Ricci curvature method of Ollivier by considering the coarse Ricci curvature of multiple steps in the Markov chain. This implies new spectral bounds and concentration inequalities. We also extend this approach to the bounds for MCMC empirical averages obtained by Joulin and Ollivier. We prove a recursive lower bound on the coarse Ricci curvature of multiple steps in the Markov chain, making our method broadly applicable. Applications include the split-merge random walk on partitions, Glauber dynamics with random scan and systemic scan for statistical physical spin mode…
Slow mixing is the central hurdle when working with Markov chains, especially those used for Monte Carlo approximations (MCMC). In many applications, it is only of interest to estimate the stationary expectations of a small set of functions, and so the usual definition of mixing based on total variation convergence may be too conservative. Accordingly, we introduce function-specific analogs of mixing times and spectral gaps, and use them to prove Hoeffding-like function-specific concentration inequalities. These results show that it is possible for empirical expectations of functions to concen…
The rate at which dependencies between future and past observations decay in a random process may be quantified in terms of mixing coefficients. The latter in turn appear in strong laws of large numbers and concentration of measure results for dependent random variables. Questions regarding what rates are possible for various notions of mixing have been posed since the 1960's, and have important implications for some open problems in the theory of strong mixing conditions. This paper deals with $η$-mixing, a notion defined in [Kontorovich and Ramanan], which is closely related to $ϕ$-mixing. W…
The martingale method is used to establish concentration inequalities for a class of dependent random sequences on a countable state space, with the constants in the inequalities expressed in terms of certain mixing coefficients. Along the way, bounds are obtained on martingale differences associated with the random sequences, which may be of independent interest. As applications of the main result, concentration inequalities are also derived for inhomogeneous Markov chains and hidden Markov chains, and an extremal property associated with their martingale difference bounds is established. Thi…
We prove a concentration inequality which asserts that, under some mild regularity conditions, every random variable defined on the product of sufficiently many probability spaces exhibits pseudorandom behavior.
We prove an extension of McDiarmid's inequality for metric spaces with unbounded diameter. To this end, we introduce the notion of the {\em subgaussian diameter}, which is a distribution-dependent refinement of the metric diameter. Our technique provides an alternative approach to that of Kutin and Niyogi's method of weakly difference-bounded functions, and yields nontrivial, dimension-free results in some interesting cases where the former does not. As an application, we give apparently the first generalization bound in the algorithmic stability setting that holds for unbounded loss functions…
We show that the mixing times of random walks on compact groups can be used to obtain concentration inequalities for the respective Haar measures. As an application, we derive a concentration inequality for the empirical distribution of eigenvalues of sums of random hermitian matrices, with possible applications in free probability. The advantage over existing techniques is that the new method can deal with functions that are non-Lipschitz or even discontinuous with respect to the usual metrics.
We show that a weak concentration property for quadratic forms of isotropic random vectors ${\bf x}$ is necessary and sufficient for the validity of the Marchenko-Pastur theorem for sample covariance matrices of random vectors having the form $C{\bf x}$, where $C$ is any rectangular matrix with orthonormal rows. We also obtain some general conditions guaranteeing the weak concentration property.
We consider a finite mixture model with varying mixing probabilities. Linear regression models are assumed for observed variables with coefficients depending on the mixture component the observed subject belongs to. A modification of the least-squares estimator is proposed for estimation of the regression coefficients. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimates is demonstrated.
We prove that Ising models on the hypercube with general quadratic interactions satisfy a Poincaré inequality with respect to the natural Dirichlet form corresponding to Glauber dynamics, as soon as the operator norm of the interaction matrix is smaller than $1$. The inequality implies a control on the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics. Our techniques rely on a localization procedure which establishes a structural result, stating that Ising measures may be decomposed into a mixture of measures with quadratic potentials of rank one, and provides a framework for proving concentration bounds fo…
We show that the Cheeger constant for $n$-dimensional isotropic logconcave measures is $O(n^{1/4})$, improving on the previous best bound of $O(n^{1/3}\sqrt{\log n}).$ As corollaries we obtain the same improved bound on the thin-shell estimate, Poincaré constant and Lipschitz concentration constant and an alternative proof of this bound for the isotropic (slicing) constant; it also follows that the ball walk for sampling from an isotropic logconcave density in ${\bf R}^{n}$ converges in $O^{*}(n^{2.5})$ steps from a warm start. The proof is based on gradually transforming any logconcave densit…
We provide some sufficient mixing conditions on a strictly stationary sequence in order to guarantee the weak invariance principle in Hölder spaces. Strong mixing and $ρ$-mixing conditions are investigated as well as $τ$-dependent sequences. The main tools are Fuk-Nagaev type inequalities for mixing sequences and a truncation argument.
The exponential random graph model (ERGM) is a central object in the study of clustering properties in social networks as well as canonical ensembles in statistical physics. Despite some breakthrough works in the mathematical understanding of ERGM, most notably in (Bhamidi, Bresler, Sly, 2011) through the analysis of a natural Heat-bath Glauber dynamics, and in (Chatterjee, Diaconis, 2013), (Eldan, Gross, 2018) via a large deviation theoretic perspective, several basic questions have remained unanswered owing to the lack of exact solvability unlike the much studied Curie-Weiss model (Ising mod…
In a companion article we have introduced a notion of multiscale functional inequalities for functions $X(A)$ of an ergodic stationary random field $A$ on the ambient space $\mathbb R^d$. These inequalities are multiscale weighted versions of standard Poincaré, covariance, and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. They hold for all the examples of fields $A$ arising in the modelling of heterogeneous materials in the applied sciences whereas their standard versions are much more restrictive. In this contribution we first investigate the link between multiscale functional inequalities and more stand…
For a stochastic process with state space some Polish space, this paper gives sufficient conditions on the initial and conditional distributions for the joint law to satisfy Gaussian concentration inequalities, transportation inequalities and also logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the case of the Euclidean space. In several cases, the obtained constants are of optimal order of growth with respect to the number of variables, or are independent of this number. These results extend results known for mutually independent variables to weakly dependent variables under Dobrushin-Shlosman type condi…
In this work we prove sufficient conditions for the Glauber dynamics corresponding to a sequence of (non-product) measures on finite product spaces to be rapidly mixing, i.e. that the mixing time with respect to the total variation distance satisfies $t_{mix} = O(N \log N)$, where $N$ is the system size. The proofs do not rely on coupling arguments, but instead use functional inequalities. As a byproduct, we obtain exponential decay of the relative entropy along the Glauber semigroup. These conditions can be checked in various examples, which include the exponential random graph models with su…
We derive sufficient conditions for the mixing of all orders of interacting transformations of a spatial Poisson point process, under a zero-type condition in probability and a generalized adaptedness condition. This extends a classical result in the case of deterministic transformations of Poisson measures. The approach relies on moment and covariance identities for Poisson stochastic integrals with random integrands.

We show sufficient conditions under which the \textsc{BallWalk} algorithm mixes fast in a bounded connected subset of $\Real^n$. In particular, we show fast mixing if the space is the transformation of a convex space under a smooth incompressible flow. Construction of such smooth flows is in turn reduced to the study of the regularity of the solution of the Dirichlet problem for Laplace's equation.
