We study a Curie-Weiss model with a random external field generated by a dynamical system. Probabilistic limit theorems (weak law of large numbers, central limit theorems) are proven for the corresponding magnetization.
In this paper, we quantify some known approximation to the Curie-Weiss model via applying the Stein method to the Markov chain whose stationary distribution coincides with Curie-Weiss model.
We prove laws of large numbers as well as central and non-central limit theorems for the Curie-Weiss model of magnetism. The rather elementary proofs are based on the method of moments.
We derive and compare various forms of local semicircle laws for random matrices with exchangeable entries which exhibit correlations that decay at a very slow rate. In fact, any $l$-point correlation will decay at a rate of $N^{-l/2}$. We call our ensembles \emph{of Curie-Weiss type}, and Curie-Weiss($β$)-distributed entries are admissible as long as $β\leq 1$.
We study the partition function and free energy of the Curie-Weiss model with complex temperature, and partially describe its phase transitions. As a consequence, we obtain information on the locations of zeros of the partition function.
In this short paper, we obtain non-asymptotic concentration results for magnetization of the Curie-Weiss model at subcritical temperatures, which leads to a diffusion limit theorem of the scaled and centered magnetization driven by a Metropolis-Hasting algorithm. These results are complementary to results at supercritical and critical temperatures in Bierkens et al (2017).
We derive moderate deviation principles for the trajectory of the empirical magnetization of the standard Curie-Weiss model via a general analytic approach based on convergence of generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions for associated Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The moderate asymptotics depend crucially on the phase under consideration.
In the present paper we prove moderate deviations for a Curie-Weiss model with external magnetic field generated by a dynamical system, as introduced by Dombry and Guillotin-Plantard. The results extend those already obtained in the case of a constant external field by Eichelsbacher and Löwe. The Curie-Weiss model with dynamic external field is related to the so called dynamic Z-random walks. We also prove a moderate deviation result for the dynamic Z-random walk, completing the list of limit theorems for this object.
We show for two disjoint groups of spins in a Curie-Weiss model and a homogeneous coupling matrix that the law of large numbers holds for the normed sums of both groups' spin variables. We also show that the central limit theorem holds only for low inverse temperatures.
We study the dynamics of fluctuations at the critical point for two time-asymmetric version of the Curie-Weiss model for spin systems that, in the macroscopic limit, undergo a Hopf bifurcation. The fluctuations around the macroscopic limit reflect the type of bifurcation, as they exhibit observables whose fluctuations evolve at different time scales. The limiting dynamics of fluctuations of slow observable is obtained via an averaging principle.
We analyze the dynamics of moderate fluctuations for macroscopic observables of the random field Curie Weiss model (i.e., standard Curie-Weiss model embedded in a site dependent, i.i.d. random environment). We obtain path space large deviation principles via a general analytic approach based on convergence of non-linear generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions for associated Hamilton Jacobi equations. The moderate asymptotics depend crucially on the phase we consider and moreover, the space-time scale range for which fluctuations can be proven is restricted by the addition of the disor…
In this paper, we investigate the energy landscape of the two-component spin systems, known as the Curie-Weiss-Potts model, which is a generalization of the Curie-Weiss model consisting of $q\ge3$ spins. In the energy landscape of a multi-component model, the most important element is the relative strength between the inter-component interaction strength and the component-wise interaction strength. If the inter-component interaction is stronger than the component-wise interaction, we can expect all the components to be synchronized in the course of metastable transition. However, if the inter-…
The dynamical Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality (SOC) was introduced in \cite{Gor17} and it is derived from the classical generalized Curie-Weiss by imposing a microscopic Markovian evolution having the distribution of the Curie-Weiss model of SOC [Cerf, Gorny 2016] as unique invariant measure. In the case of Gaussian single-spin distribution, we analyze the dynamics of moderate fluctuations for the magnetization. We obtain a path-space moderate deviation principle via a general analytic approach based on convergence of non-linear generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions …
We consider the Curie-Weiss Widom-Rowlinson model for particles with spins and holes, with a repulsion strength beta between particles of opposite spins. We provide a closed solution of the model, and investigate dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions for the time-evolved model under independent stochastic symmetric spin-flip dynamics. We show that, for sufficiently large beta after a transition time, continuously many bad empirical measures appear. These lie on (unions of) curves on the simplex whose time-evolution we describe.
We consider stochastic dynamics for a spin system with mean field interaction, in which the interaction potential is subject to noisy and dissipative stochastic evolution. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit and at sufficiently low temperature, the magnetization of the system has a time periodic behavior, despite of the fact that no periodic force is applied.
The random field Curie-Weiss model is derived from the classical Curie-Weiss model by replacing the deterministic global magnetic field by random local magnetic fields. This opens up a new and interestingly rich phase structure. In this setting, we derive moderate deviations principles for the random total magnetization $S_n$, which is the partial sum of (dependent) spins. A typical result is that under appropriate assumptions on the distribution of the local external fields there exist a real number $m$, a positive real number $λ$, and a positive integer $k$ such that $(S_n-nm)/n^α$ satisfies…
We consider the Curie-Weiss Potts model in zero external field under independent symmetric spin-flip dynamics. We investigate dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions for a range of initial inverse temperatures beta<3, which covers the phase transition point beta=4 log 2 [8]. We show that finitely many types of trajectories of bad empirical measures appear, depending on the parameter beta, with a possibility of re-entrance into the Gibbsian regime, of which we provide a full description.
We study the inhomogeneous Curie-Weiss model with external field, where the inhomogeneity is introduced by adding a positive weight to every vertex and letting the interaction strength between two vertices be proportional to the product of their weights. In this model, the sum of the spins obeys a central limit theorem outside the critical line. We derive a Berry-Esseen rate of convergence for this limit theorem using Stein's method for exchangeable pairs. For this, we, amongst others, need to generalize this method to a multidimensional setting with unbounded random variables.
We modify the Glauber dynamics of the Curie-Weiss model with dissipation in Dai Pra, Fischer, Regoli[2013] by considering arbitrary transition rates and we analyze the phase-portrait as well as the dynamics of moderate fluctuations for macroscopic observables. We obtain path-space moderate deviation principles via a general analytic approach based on the convergence of non-linear generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions for associated Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The moderate asymptotics depend crucially on the phase we are considering and, moreover, their behavior may be influenced by t…
In the present paper we obtain rates of convergence for the limit theorems of the density vector in the Curie-Weiss-Potts model via Stein's Method of exchangeable pairs. Our results include Kolmogorov bounds for multivariate normal approximation in the whole domain $β\geq 0$ and $h\geq 0$, where $β$ is the inverse temperature and $h$ an exterior field. In this model, the critical line $β= β_c(h)$ is explicitly known and corresponds to a first order transition. We include rates of convergence for non-Gaussian approximations at the extremity of the critical line of the model.
In this paper, we modify the Langevin dynamics associated to the generalized Curie-Weiss model by introducing noisy and dissipative evolution in the interaction potential. We show that, when a zero-mean Gaussian is taken as single-site distribution, the dynamics in the thermodynamic limit can be described by a finite set of ODEs. Depending on the form of the interaction function, the system can have several phase transitions at different critical temperatures. Because of the dissipation effect, not only the magnetization of the systems displays a self-sustained periodic behavior at sufficientl…
In this article we consider an extension of the classical Curie-Weiss model in which the global and deterministic external magnetic field is replaced by local and random external fields which interact with each spin of the system. We prove a Large Deviations Principle for the so-called {\it magnetization per spin} $S_n/n$ with respect to the associated Gibbs measure, where $S_n/n$ is the scaled partial sum of spins. In particular, we obtain an explicit expression for the LDP rate function, which enables an extensive study of the phase diagram in some examples. It is worth mentioning that the m…
We analyse the metastable behaviour of the dilute Curie-Weiss model subject to a Glauber dynamics. The model is a random version of a mean-field Ising model, where the coupling coefficients are Bernoulli random variables with mean $p\in (0,1)$. This model can be also viewed as an Ising model on the Erdős-Rényi random graph with edge probability $p$. The system is a Markov chain where spins flip according to a Metropolis dynamics at inverse temperature $β$. We compute the average time the system takes to reach the stable phase when it starts from a certain probability distribution on the metast…
We study the limiting spectral distribution of sample covariance matrices $XX^T$, where $X$ are $p\times n$ random matrices with correlated entries, for the cases $p/n\to y\in [0,\infty)$. If $y>0$, we obtain the Marčenko-Pastur distribution and in the case $y=0$ the semicircle distribution (after appropriate rescaling). The entries we consider are Curie-Weiss spins, which are correlated random signs, where the degree of the correlation is governed by an inverse temperature $β>0$. The model exhibits a phase transition at $β=1$. The correlation between any two entries decays at a rate of $O(np)…
In Turitsyn, Chertkov, Vucelja (2011) a non-reversible Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method on an augmented state space was introduced, here referred to as Lifted Metropolis-Hastings (LMH). A scaling limit of the magnetization process in the Curie-Weiss model is derived for LMH, as well as for Metropolis-Hastings (MH). The required jump rate in the high (supercritical) temperature regime equals $n^{1/2}$ for LMH, which should be compared to $n$ for MH. At the critical temperature the required jump rate equals $n^{3/4}$ for LMH and $n^{3/2}$ for MH, in agreement with experimental results of T…
We extend the main theorem of arXiv:1301.6911 about the fluctuations in the Curie-Weiss model of SOC. We present a short proof using the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation with the self-normalized sum of the random variables.
We discuss a Curie-Weiss model with two groups in the critical regime. This is the region where the central limit theorem does not hold any more but the mean magnetization still goes to zero as the number of spins grows. We show that the total magnetization normalized by $N^{3/4}$ converges to a non-trivial distribution which is not Gaussian, just as in the single-group Curie-Weiss model.
We show that a large collection of statistical mechanical systems with quadratically represented Hamiltonians on the complete graph can be extended to infinite exchangeable processes. This extends a known result for the ferromagnetic Curie--Weiss Ising model and includes as well all ferromagnetic Curie--Weiss Potts and Curie--Weiss Heisenberg models. By de Finetti's theorem, this is equivalent to showing that these probability measures can be expressed as averages of product measures. We provide examples showing that ``ferromagnetism'' is not however in itself sufficient and also study in some…
We analyze the Glauber dynamics for a bi-populated Curie-Weiss model. We obtain the limiting behavior of the empirical averages in the limit of infinitely many particles. We then characterize the phase space of the model in absence of magnetic field and we show that several phase transitions in the inter-groups interaction strength occur.
In this paper we study the moderate deviations for the magnetization of critical Curie-Weiss model. Chen, Fang and Shao considered a similar problem for non-critical model by using Stein method. By direct and simple arguments based on Laplace method, we provide an explicit formula of the error and deduce a Cramér-type result.
We build and study a multidimensional version of the Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality we have designed in arXiv:1301.6911. For symmetric distributions satisfying some integrability condition, we prove that the sum $S_n$ of the randoms vectors in the model has a typical critical behaviour. The fluctuations are of order $n^{3/4}$ and the limiting law has a density proportional to the exponential of a fourth-degree polynomial.
We study a multi-group version of the mean-field or Curie-Weiss spin model. For this model, we show how, analogously to the classical (single-group) model, the three temperature regimes are defined. Then we use the method of moments to determine for each regime how the vector of the group magnetisations behaves asymptotically. Some possible applications to social or political sciences are discussed.
We extend results on quadratic pressure and convergence of Gibbs mesures from previous joined work of the authors to the Curie-Weiss-Potts model. We define the notion of equilibrium state for the quadratic pressure and show that under some conditions on the maxima for some auxiliary function, the Gibbs measure converges to a convex combination of eigen-measures for the Transfer Operator. This extension works for dynamical systems defined by {infinite-to-one} maps. As an example, we compute the equilibrium for {the mean-field} $XY$ model as the number of particles goes to $+\infty$.
We define a multi-group version of the mean-field spin model, also called Curie-Weiss model. It is known that, in the high temperature regime of this model, a central limit theorem holds for the vector of suitably scaled group magnetisations, that is the sum of spins belonging to each group. In this article, we prove a local central limit theorem for the group magnetisations in the high temperature regime.
We modify the spin-flip dynamics of a Curie-Weiss model with dissipative interaction potential (Dai Pra, Fischer and Regoli (2013)) by adding a site-dependent i.i.d. random magnetic field. The purpose is to analyze how the addition of the field affects the time-evolution of the observables in the macroscopic limit. Our main result shows that a Bautin bifurcation point exists and that, whenever the field intensity is sufficiently strong and the temperature sufficiently low, a periodic orbit emerges through a global bifurcation in the phase space, giving origin to a large-amplitude rhythmic beha…
We pursue the study of the Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality we designed in arXiv:1301.6911. We extend our results to more general interaction functions and we prove that, for a class of symmetric distributions satisfying a Cramér condition $(C)$ and some integrability hypothesis, the sum $S_{n}$ of the random variables behaves as in the typical critical generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model. The fluctuations are of order $n^{3/4}$ and the limiting law is $k \exp(-λx^{4})\,dx$ where $k$ and $λ$ are suitable positive constants. In arXiv:1301.6911 we obtained these results only for d…
This paper proposes a conditional Curie-Weiss model as a model for opinion formation in a society polarized along two opinions, say opinions 1 and 2. The model comes with interaction strength $β>0$ and bais $h$. Here the population in question is divided into three main groups, namely: Group one consisting of individuals who have decided on opinion 1. Let the proportion of this group be given by $s$. Group two consisting of individauls who have chosen opinion 2. Let $r$ be their proportion. Group three consisting of individuals who are yet to decide and they will decide based on their environm…
In this paper, we introduce a Markov process whose unique invariant distribution is the Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality (SOC) we designed in arXiv:1301.6911. In the Gaussian case, we prove rigorously that it is a dynamical model of SOC: the fluctuations of the sum $S_{n}(\,\cdot\,)$ of the process evolve in a time scale of order $\sqrt{n}$ and in a space scale of order $n^{3/4}$ and the limiting process is the solution of a "critical" stochastic differential equation.
This paper studies a generalization of the Curie-Weiss model (the Ising model on a complete graph) to quantum mechanics. Using a natural probabilistic representation of this model, we give a complete picture of the phase diagram of the model in the parameters of inverse temperature and transverse field strength. Further analysis computes the critical exponent for the decay of the order parameter in the approach to the critical curve and gives useful stability properties of a variational problem associated with the representation.
The Curie-Weiss Potts model is a mean field version of the well-known Potts model. In this model, the critical line $β= β_c (h)$ is explicitly known and corresponds to a first order transition when $q > 2$. In the present paper we describe the fluctuations of the density vector in the whole domain $β\geqslant 0$ and $h \geqslant 0$, including the conditional fluctuations on the critical line and the non-Gaussian fluctuations at the extremity of the critical line. The probabilities of each of the two thermodynamically stable states on the critical line are also computed. Similar results are inf…
We discuss a Curie-Weiss model with two groups with different coupling constants within and between groups. For the total magnetisations in each group, we show bivariate laws of large numbers and a central limit theorem which is valid in the high temperature regime. In the critical regime, the total magnetisation normalised by $N^{3/4}$ converges to a non-trivial distribution which is not Gaussian, just as in the single-group Curie-Weiss model. Finally, we prove a kind of a `law of large numbers' in the low temperature regime, more precisely we prove that the empirical magnetisation converges …
We study the metastable minima of the Curie-Weiss Potts model with three states, as a function of the inverse temperature, and for arbitrary vector-valued external fields. Extending the classic work of Ellis/Wang and Wang we use singularity theory to provide the global structure of metastable (or local) minima. In particular, we show that the free energy has up to four local minimizers (some of which may at the same time be global) and describe the bifurcation geometry of their transitions under variation of the parameters.
Hochstättler, Kirsch, and Warzel showed that the semicircle law holds for generalized Curie-Weiss matrix ensembles at or above the critical temperature. We extend their result to the case of subcritical temperatures for which the correlations between the matrix entries are stronger. Nevertheless, one may use the concept of approximately uncorrelated ensembles that was first introduced in the paper mentioned above. In order to do so one needs to remove the average magnetization of the entries by an appropriate modification of the ensemble that turns out to be of rank 1 thus not changing the lim…
We try to design a simple model exhibiting self-organized criticality, which is amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis. To this end, we modify the generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model by implementing an automatic control of the inverse temperature. For a class of symmetric distributions whose density satisfies some integrability conditions, we prove that the sum $S_n$ of the random variables behaves as in the typical critical generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model. The fluctuations are of order $n^{3/4}$, and the limiting law is $C\exp(-λx^4)\,dx$ where $C$ and $λ$ are suitable positive cons…
In this paper we study the metastable behavior of one of the simplest disordered spin system, the random field Curie-Weiss model. We will show how the potential theoretic approach can be used to prove sharp estimates on capacities and metastable exit times also in the case when the distribution of the random field is continuous. Previous work was restricted to the case when the random field takes only finitely many values, which allowed the reduction to a finite dimensional problem using lumping techniques. Here we produce the first genuine sharp estimates in a context where entropy is importa…
We try to design a simple model exhibiting self-organized criticality, which is amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis. To this end, we modify the generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model by implementing an automatic control of the inverse temperature. With the help of exact computations, we show that, in the case of a centered Gaussian measure with positive variance $σ^{2}$, the sum $S_n$ of the random variables has fluctuations of order $n^{3/4}$ and that $S_n/n^{3/4}$ converges to the distribution $C \exp(-x^{4}/(4σ^4))\,dx$ where $C$ is a suitable positive constant.
We consider the Ising model on a dense Erdős--Rényi random graph, $\mathcal G(N,p)$, with $p>0$ fixed---equivalently, a disordered Curie--Weiss Ising model with $\mbox{Ber}(p)$ couplings---at zero temperature. The disorder may induce local energy minima in addition to the two uniform ground states. In this paper we prove that, starting from a typical initial configuration, the zero-temperature dynamics avoids all such local minima and absorbs into a predetermined one of the two uniform ground states. We relate this to the local MINCUT problem on dense random graphs; namely with high probabilit…
