We present a new short proof of the explicit formula for the group of links (and also link maps) in the 'quadruple point free' dimension. Denote by $L^m_{p,q}$ (respectively, $C^{m-p}_p$) the group of smooth embeddings $S^p\sqcup S^q\to S^m$ (respectively, $S^p\to S^m$) up to smooth isotopy. Denote by $LM^m_{p,q}$ the group of link maps $S^p\sqcup S^q\to S^m$ up to link homotopy.
Theorem 1. If $p\le q\le m-3$ and $2p+2q\le 3m-6$ then \begin{equation*} L^m_{p,q}\cong π_p(S^{m-q-1})\oplusπ_{p+q+2-m}(SO/SO_{m-p-1})\oplus C^{m-p}_p\oplus C^{m-q}_q. \end{equation*} Theorem 2. If $p, q\le m-3$ and $2p+2q\le 3m-5$ then $LM^m_{p,q}\cong π^S_{p+q+1-m}$.
Our approach is based on the use of the suspension operation for links and link maps, and suspension theorems for them.
We study the space of "link maps": the space of maps of a disjoint union of compact, closed manifolds P_1, . . ., P_k into a manifold N whose images are pairwise disjoint. We apply the manifold calculus of functors developed by Goodwillie and Weiss to study the difference between it and its linear and quadratic approximations. We identify an appropriate generalization of the linking number as the geometric object which measures the difference between the space of link maps and its linear approximation. Our analysis of the difference between link maps and its quadratic approximation connects wi…
We find that Koschorke's $β$-invariant and the triple $μ$-invariant of link maps in the critical dimension can be computed as degrees of certain maps of configuration spaces - just like the linking number. Both formulas admit geometric interpretations in terms of Vassiliev's ornaments via new operations akin to the Jin suspension, and both were unexpected for the author, because the only known direct ways to extract $μ$ and $β$ from invariants of maps between configuration spaces involved some homotopy theory (Whitehead products and the stable Hopf invariant, respectively).
We study the problem of defining maps on link Floer homology induced by unoriented link cobordisms. We provide a natural notion of link cobordism, disoriented link cobordism, which tracks the motion of index zero and index three critical points. Then we construct a map on unoriented link Floer homology associated to a disoriented link cobordism. Furthermore, we give a comparison with Oszváth-Stipsicz-Szabó's and Manolescu's constructions of link cobordism maps for an unoriented band move.
We affirmatively address the question of whether the proposed link homotopy invariant $ω$ of Li is well-defined. It is also shown that if one wishes to adapt the homotopy invariant $τ$ of Schneiderman-Teichner to a link homotopy invariant of link maps, the result coincides with $ω$.
We use Kirk's invariant of link maps $S^2\sqcup S^2\to S^4$ and its variations due to Koschorke and Kirk-Livingston to deduce results about classical links. Namely, we give a new proof of the Nakanishi-Ohyama classification of two-component links in $S^3$ up to $Δ$-link homotopy. We also prove its version for string links, which is due (in a slightly different form) to Fleming-Yasuhara. The proofs do not use Clasper Theory.
A stable map of a closed orientable $3$-manifold into the real plane is called a stable map of a link in the manifold if the link is contained in the set of definite fold points. We give a complete characterization of the hyperbolic links in the $3$-sphere that admit stable maps into the real plane with exactly one (connected component of a) fiber having two singular points.
It is an open problem whether Kirk's $σ$ invariant is the complete obstruction to a link map $S^2\cup S^2\to S^4$ being link homotopically trivial. With the objective of constructing counterexamples, Li proposed a link homotopy invariant $ω$ that is defined on the kernel of $σ$ and also obstructs link nullhomotopy. We show that $ω$ is determined by $σ$, and is a strictly weaker invariant.
We show that the link cobordism maps defined by the author are graded and satisfy a grading change formula. Using the grading change formula, we prove a new bound for $Υ_K(t)$ for knot cobordisms in negative definite 4-manifolds. As another application, we show that the link cobordism maps associated to a connected, closed surface in $S^4$ are determined by the genus of the surface. We also prove a new adjunction relation and adjunction inequality for the link cobordism maps. Along the way, we see how many known results in Heegaard Floer homology can be proven using basic properties of the lin…
It is shown that Schneiderman and Teichner's invariant $τ$ detects the example due to Kirk of a link map $f:S^2_+\cup S^2_-\to S^4$ for which the restricted map $f|S^2_+:S^2_+\to S^4-f(S^2_-)$ has vanishing Wall self-intersection but is not homotopic to an embedding.
The Morse-Novikov number MN(L) of an oriented link L in the 3-sphere is the minimum number of critical points of a Morse map from the complement of L in the 3-sphere to the circle representing the class of a Seifert surface for L (e.g., the Morse-Novikov number of L is zero if and only if L is fibered). We develop various constructions of Morse maps (Milnor maps, Stallings twists, splicing along a link which is a closed braid with respect to a Morse map, Murasugi sums, cutting a Morse map along an arc on a page) and use them to bound Morse-Novikov numbers from above in terms of other knot and …
We analyze the effect of adding, removing, and moving basepoints on link Floer homology. We prove that adding or removing basepoints via a procedure called quasi-stabilization is a natural operation on a certain version of link Floer homology, which we call $CFL_{UV}^\infty$. We consider the effect on the full link Floer complex of moving basepoints, and develop a simple calculus for moving basepoints on the link Floer complexes. We apply it to compute the effect of several diffeomorphisms corresponding to moving basepoints. Using these techniques we prove a conjecture of Sarkar about the map …
We prove the analogue of the Concordance Implies Isotopy in Codimension $\ge 3$ Theorem for link maps, together with some other its singular analogues. In the case of spherical link maps, a stronger result was independently obtained by P. Teichner (by different methods).
We construct cobordism maps on link Floer homology associated to decorated link cobordisms. The maps are defined on a curved chain homotopy type invariant. We describe the construction, and prove invariance. We also make a comparison with the graph TQFT for Heegaard Floer homology.
We study the maps induced on link Floer homology by elementary decorated link cobordisms. We compute these for births, deaths, stabilizations, and destabilizations, and show that saddle cobordisms can be computed in terms of maps in a decorated skein exact triangle that extends the oriented skein exact triangle in knot Floer homology. In particular, we completely determine the Alexander and Maslov grading shifts. As a corollary, we compute the maps induced by elementary cobordisms between unlinks. We show that these give rise to a $(1+1)$-dimensional TQFT that coincides with the reduced Khovan…
In this paper, we introduce and study representation homology of topological spaces, which is a natural homological extension of representation varieties of fundamental groups. We give an elementary construction of representation homology parallel to the Loday-Pirashvili construction of higher Hochschild homology; in fact, we establish a direct geometric relation between the two theories by proving that the representation homology of the suspension of a (pointed connected) space is isomorphic to its higher Hochschild homology. We also construct some natural maps and spectral sequences relating…
We describe the Lorenz links generated by renormalizable Lorenz maps with reducible kneading invariant $(K_f^-,K_f^+)=(X,Y)*(S,W)$, in terms of the links corresponding to each factor. This gives one new kind of operation that permits us to generate new knots and links from old. Using this result we obtain explicit formulas for the genus and the braid index of this renormalizable Lorenz knots and links. Then we obtain explicit formulas for sequences of these invariants, associated to sequences of renormalizable Lorenz maps with kneading invariant $(X,Y)*(S,W)^{*n}$, concluding that both grow ex…
A previous work of A. Conway and the author introduced $L^2$-Burau maps of braids, which are generalizations of the Burau representation whose coefficients live in a more general group ring than the one of Laurent polynomials. This same work established that the $L^2$-Burau map of a braid at the group of the braid closure yields the $L^2$-Alexander torsion of the braid closure in question, as a variant of the well-known Burau-Alexander formula. In the present paper, we generalize the previous result to $L^2$-Burau maps defined over all quotients of the group of the braid closure. The link inva…
In this sequel we extend the derivation of the third order helicity to magnetic fields supported on unlinked domains in 3-space. The formula is expressed in terms of generators of the deRham cohomology of the configuration space of three points in $\R^3$, which is a more practical domain from the perspective of applications. It also admits an ergodic interpretation as an average asymptotic Milnor $\barμ_{123}$-invariant and allows us to obtain the $L^2$-energy bound for the magnetic field. As an intermediate step we derive an integral formula for Milnor $\barμ_{123}$-invariant for parametrized…
