We introduce the notions of open-closed field algebra and open-closed field algebra over a vertex operator algebra V. In the case that V satisfies certain finiteness and reductivity conditions, we show that an open-closed field algebra over V canonically gives an algebra over a $\C$-extension of the Swiss-cheese partial operad. We also give a tensor categorical formulation and categorical constructions of open-closed field algebras over V.

On Homotopy Algebras and Quantum String Field Theory

We revisit the existence, background independence and uniqueness of closed, open and open-closed bosonic- and topological string field theory, using the machinery of homotopy algebra. In a theory of classical open- and closed strings, the space of inequivalent open string field theories is isomorphic to the space of classical closed string backgrounds. We then discuss obstructions of these moduli spaces at the quantum level. Homotopy algebras inspired by classical open-closed string field theory

We define a homotopy algebra associated to classical open-closed strings. We call it an open-closed homotopy algebra (OCHA). It is inspired by Zwiebach's open-closed string field theory and also is related to the situation of Kontsevich's deformation quantization. We show that it is actually a homotopy invariant notion; for instance, the minimal model theorem holds. Also, we show that our open-closed homotopy algebra gives us a general scheme for deformation of open string structures (A(infinity)-algebras) by closed strings (L(infinity)-algebras).

Open-closed homotopy algebra in mathematical physics

In this paper we discuss various aspects of open-closed homotopy algebras (OCHAs) presented in our previous paper, inspired by Zwiebach's open-closed string field theory, but that first paper concentrated on the mathematical aspects. Here we show how an OCHA is obtained by extracting the tree part of Zwiebach's quantum open-closed string field theory. Homotopy algebra of open-closed strings

This paper is a survey of our previous works on open-closed homotopy algebras, together with geometrical background, especially in terms of compactifications of configuration spaces (one of Fred's specialities) of Riemann surfaces, structures on loop spaces, etc. We newly present Merkulov's geometric A_infty-structure [Internat. Math. Res. Notices (1999) 153--164, arxiv:math/0001007] as a special example of an OCHA. We also recall the relation of open-closed homotopy algebras to various aspects of deformation theory.

Open-closed strings: Two-dimensional extended TQFTs and Frobenius algebras

We study a special sort of 2-dimensional extended Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) which we call open-closed TQFTs. These are defined on open-closed cobordisms by which we mean smooth compact oriented 2-manifolds with corners that have a particular global structure in order to model the smooth topology of open and closed string worldsheets. The classification of finite-dimensional triangular Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0

We explain that a new theorem of Deligne on symmetric tensor categories implies, in a straightforward manner, that any finite dimensional triangular Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero has Chevalley property, and in particular the list of finite dimensional triangular Hopf algebras over such a field given in math.QA/0008232, math.QA/0101049 is complete. Casimirs of the Goldman Lie algebra of a closed surface

In 1986 Goldman introduced a Lie algebra structure on the linear span L of conjugacy classes of the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface. It is easy to see that the class e_1 of the trivial loop is a central element in L. We prove that any central element of L is a multiple of e_1 (a conjecture communicated to the author by Chas and Sullivan), and moreover that any central element of the Poisson algebra SL is a polynomial of e_1.

Tensor-closed objects in the BGG category of a quantized semisimple Lie algebra

We consider the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ of a quantized universal enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$. We call a module $M\in \mathcal{O}$ tensor-closed if $M\otimes N\in\mathcal{O}$ for any $N\in \mathcal{O}$. In this paper we prove that $M\in \mathcal{O}$ is tensor-closed if and only if $M$ is finite dimensional. The method used in this paper applies to the unquantized case as well.
