We define a homotopy algebra associated to classical open-closed strings. We call it an open-closed homotopy algebra (OCHA). It is inspired by Zwiebach's open-closed string field theory and also is related to the situation of Kontsevich's deformation quantization. We show that it is actually a homotopy invariant notion; for instance, the minimal model theorem holds. Also, we show that our open-closed homotopy algebra gives us a general scheme for deformation of open string structures (A(infinity)-algebras) by closed strings (L(infinity)-algebras).

Homotopy algebra of open-closed strings

This paper is a survey of our previous works on open-closed homotopy algebras, together with geometrical background, especially in terms of compactifications of configuration spaces (one of Fred's specialities) of Riemann surfaces, structures on loop spaces, etc. We newly present Merkulov's geometric A_infty-structure [Internat. Math. Res. Notices (1999) 153--164, arxiv:math/0001007] as a special example of an OCHA. We also recall the relation of open-closed homotopy algebras to various aspects of deformation theory.

On Homotopy Algebras and Quantum String Field Theory

We revisit the existence, background independence and uniqueness of closed, open and open-closed bosonic- and topological string field theory, using the machinery of homotopy algebra. In a theory of classical open- and closed strings, the space of inequivalent open string field theories is isomorphic to the space of classical closed string backgrounds. We then discuss obstructions of these moduli spaces at the quantum level. Topological field theories, string backgrounds and homotopy algebras

String backgrounds are described as purely geometric objects related to moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, in the spirit of Segal's definition of a conformal field theory. Relations with conformal field theory, topological field theory and topological gravity are studied. For each field theory, an algebraic counterpart, the (homotopy) algebra satisfied by the tree level correlators, is constructed.

Open-closed homotopy algebra in mathematical physics

In this paper we discuss various aspects of open-closed homotopy algebras (OCHAs) presented in our previous paper, inspired by Zwiebach's open-closed string field theory, but that first paper concentrated on the mathematical aspects. Loop Homotopy Algebras in Closed String Field Theory

Barton Zwiebach constructed the `string products' on the Hilbert space of combined conformal field theory of matter and ghosts. It is well-known that the `tree level' specialization of these products forms a strongly homotopy Lie algebra. Deformation of string topology into homotopy skein modules

Relations between the string topology of Chas and Sullivan and the homotopy skein modules of Hoste and Przytycki are studied. This provides new insight into the structure of homotopy skein modules and their meaning in the framework of quantum topology. Our results can be considered as weak extensions to all orientable 3-manifolds of classical results by Turaev and Goldman concerning intersection and skein theory on oriented surfaces.

String topology prospectra and Hochschild cohomology

We study string topology for classifying spaces of connected compact Lie groups, drawing connections with Hochschild cohomology and equivariant homotopy theory. First, for a compact Lie group $G$, we show that the string topology prospectrum $LBG^{-TBG}$ is equivalent to the homotopy fixed-point prospectrum for the conjugation action of $G$ on itself, $G^{hG}$. String topology on Gorenstein spaces

The purpose of this paper is to describe a general and simple setting for defining $(g,p+q)$-string operations on a Poincaré duality space and more generally on a Gorenstein space. Gorenstein spaces include Poincaré duality spaces as well as classifying spaces or homotopy quotients of connected Lie groups. Our presentation implies directly the homotopy invariance of each $(g,p+q)$-string operation as well as it leads to explicit computations.

Noncommutative homotopy algebras associated with open strings

We discuss general properties of $A_\infty$-algebras and their applications to the theory of open strings. The properties of cyclicity for $A_\infty$-algebras are examined in detail. We prove the decomposition theorem, which is a stronger version of the minimal model theorem, for $A_\infty$-algebras and cyclic $A_\infty$-algebras and discuss various consequences of it. Homotopy algebras and noncommutative geometry

We study cohomology theories of strongly homotopy algebras, namely $A_\infty, C_\infty$ and $L_\infty$-algebras and establish the Hodge decomposition of Hochschild and cyclic cohomology of $C_\infty$-algebras thus generalising previous work by Loday and Gerstenhaber-Schack. Symplectic $A_\infty$-algebras and string topology operations

In this paper we establish the existence of certain structures on the ordinary and equivariant homology of the free loop space on a manifold or, more generally, a formal Poincaré duality space. These structures; namely the loop product, the loop bracket and the string bracket, were introduced and studied by Chas and Sullivan under the general heading `string topology'. Our method is based on obstruction theory for $C_\infty$-algebras and rational homotopy theory. The resulting string topology operations are manifestly homotopy invariant.

Diagrams for primitive cycles in spaces of pure braids and string links

The based loop space of a configuration space of points in a Euclidean space can be viewed as a space of pure braids in a Euclidean space of one dimension higher. We continue our study of such spaces in terms of Kontsevich's CDGA of diagrams and Chen's iterated integrals. We first discuss how open/closed chord diagrams, both with and without marked points, act on appropriate Hochschild complexes possibly coupled with the two-sided cobar complex. Then, in the main part of the paper, we introduce the notion of a V_k-algebra and obtain suitable homotopy versions.

Homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras and topological field theory

We prove that the BRST complex of a topological conformal field theory is a homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra, as conjectured by Lian and Zuckerman in 1992. We also suggest a refinement of the original conjecture for topological vertex operator algebras. We illustrate the usefulness of our main tools, operads and "string vertices" by obtaining new results on Vassiliev invariants of knots and double loop spaces.

Homotopy Algebras in Higher Spin Theory

Motivated by string field theory, we explore various algebraic aspects of higher spin theory and Vasiliev equation in terms of homotopy algebras. We present a systematic study of unfolded formulation developed for the higher spin equation in terms of the Maurer-Cartan equation associated to differential forms valued in L-infinity algebras.
