Compressible vortex sheets are fundamental waves in entropy solutions to the multidimensional hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. For the Euler equations in 2-D gas dynamics, the classical linearized stability analysis on compressible vortex sheets predicts stability when the Mach number $M>\sqrt{2}$ and instability when $M<\sqrt{2}$; and Artola-Majda's analysis reveals that the nonlinear instability may occur if planar vortex sheets are perturbed by highly oscillatory waves even when $M>\sqrt{2}$. For the Euler equations in 3-D, every compressible vortex sheet is violently unstable and this violent instability is the analogue of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability for incompressible fluids. The purpose of this paper is to understand whether compressible vortex sheets in 3-D, which are unstable in the regime of pure gas dynamics, become stable under the magnetic effect in 3-D magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). One of the main features is that the stability problem is equivalent to a free boundary problem whose free boundary is a characteristic surface. Another feature is that the linearized problem for current-vortex sheets in MHD does not meet the uniform Kreiss-Lopatinskii condition. In this paper, we develop a nonlinear approach to deal with these difficulties in 3-D MHD. We first carefully formulate the linearized problem for the current-vortex sheets to show rigorously that the magnetic effect makes the problem weakly stable and establish energy estimates, especially high-order energy estimates, in terms of the nonhomogeneous terms and variable coefficients without loss of the order. Then we exploit these results to develop a suitable iteration scheme of Nash-Moser-Hörmander type and establish its convergence, which leads to the existence and stability of compressible current-vortex sheets, locally in time, in the 3-D MHD.
The relationship between the compressible magnetohydrodynamic flows with low Mach number and the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic flows is investigated. More precisely, the convergence of weak solutions of the compressible isentropic viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations to the weak solutions of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations is proved as the density becomes constant and the Mach number goes to zero, that is, the corresponding incompressible limits are justified when the spatial domain is a periodic domain, the whole space, or a bounded domain.
The full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations can be derived formally from the complete electromagnetic fluid system in some sense as the dielectric constant tends to zero. This process is usually referred as magnetohydrodynamic approximation in physical books. In this paper we justify this singular limit rigorously in the framework of smooth solutions for well-prepared initial data.
The compactness of weak solutions to the magnetohydrodynamic equations for the viscous, compressible, heat conducting fluids is considered in both the three-dimensional space $\R^3$ and the three-dimensional periodic domains. The viscosities, the heat conductivity as well as the magnetic coefficient are allowed to depend on the density, and may vanish on the vacuum. This paper provides a new idea to show the compactness of solutions of viscous, compressible, heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic flows, derives a new entropy identity, and shows that the limit of a sequence of weak solutions is st…
The equations of the three-dimensional viscous, compressible, and heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic flows are considered in a bounded domain. The viscosity coefficients and heat conductivity can depend on the temperature. A solution to the initial-boundary value problem is constructed through an approximation scheme and a weak convergence method. The existence of a global variational weak solution to the three-dimensional full magnetohydrodynamic equations with large data is established.
The three-dimensional equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamic isentropic flows are considered. An initial-boundary value problem is studied in a bounded domain with large data. The existence and large-time behavior of global weak solutions are established through a three-level approximation, energy estimates, and weak convergence for the adiabatic exponent $γ>\frac32$ and constant viscosity coefficients.
We prove that the smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional compressible barotropic magnetohydrodynamic equations with conserved total mass and finite total energy lose the initial smoothness within a finite time. Further, we show that the same result holds for the solution to the Cauchy problem for the multidimensional compressible Navier-Stokes system. Moreover, for the solution with a finite momentum of inertia we get the two-sided estimates of different components of total energy.
This paper establishes a blowup criterion for the three-dimensional viscous, compressible, and heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. It is essentially shown that for the Cauchy problem and the initial-boundary-value one of the three-dimensional compressible MHD flows with initial density allowed to vanish, the strong or smooth solution exists globally if the density is bounded from above and the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition. Therefore, if the Serrin norm of the velocity remains bounded, it is not possible for other kinds of singularities (such as vacuum states vanish or…
We establish a regularity criterion for the 3D full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero heat conductivity and vacuum in a bounded domain.
In this paper we consider the global well-posedness of compressible magnetohydrodynamic system in $\R^d$ with $d\geq2$, in the framework of the critical Besov spaces. We can show that if the initial data, the shear viscosity and the magnetic diffusion coefficient are small comparing with the volume viscosity, then compressible magnetohydrodynamic system has a unique global solution.
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with periodic boundary conditions. It is rigorously shown that the weak solutions of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converge to the strong solution of the viscous or inviscid incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as long as the latter exists both for the well-prepared initial data and general initial data. Furthermore, the convergence rates are also obtained in the case of the well-prepared initial data.
Convergence rate estimates are obtained for singular limits of the compressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics equations, in which the Mach and Alfvén numbers tend to zero at different rates. The proofs use a detailed analysis of exact and approximate fast, intermediate, and slow modes together with improved estimates for the solutions and their time derivatives, and the time-integration method. When the small parameters are related by a power law the convergence rates are positive powers of the Mach number, with the power varying depending on the component and the norm. Exceptionally, the converg…
The local well-posedness and low Mach number limit are considered for the multi-dimensional isentropic compressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations in critical spaces. First the local well-posedness of solution to the viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with large initial data is established. Then the low Mach number limit is studied for general large data and it is proved that the solution of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converges to that of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the Mach number tends to zero. Moreover, the convergence rates are obtained…
In this paper we establish the uniform estimates of strong solutions with respect to the Mach number and the dielectric constant to the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system in a bounded domain. Based on these uniform estimates, we obtain the convergence of the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations for well-prepared data.
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with vanishing viscosity coefficients and general initial data in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ $ (d=2$ or 3). It is rigorously showed that, as the Mach number, the shear viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusion coefficient simultaneously go to zero, the weak solution of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converges to the strong solution of the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as long as the latter exists.
In this paper, we consider the quasi-neutral limit of a three dimensional Euler-Poisson system of compressible fluids coupled to a magnetic field. We prove that, as Debye length tends to zero, periodic initial-value problems of the model have unique smooth solutions existing in the time interval where the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations has smooth solution. Meanwhile, it is proved that smooth solutions converge to solutions of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with a sharp convergence rate in the process of quasi-neutral limit.
We study the well-posedness of compressible vortex sheets and entropy waves in two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flows over Lipschitz walls with $BV$ incoming flows. Both the Lipschitz wall of $BV$ tangential angle function and the $BV$ incoming flow perturb a background strong vortex sheet/entropy wave. In particular, when the total variation of the incoming flow perturbation around the background strong vortex sheet/entropy wave is small, we prove that the two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flows containing a strong vortex sheet/entropy wave past the Lipschitz wall are $L^{1}$--st…
We study the incompressible limit of the compressible non-isentropic magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero magnetic diffusivity and general initial data in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ $(d=2,3)$. We first establish the existence of classic solutions on a time interval independent of the Mach number. Then, by deriving uniform a priori estimates, we obtain the convergence of the solution to that of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the Mach number tends to zero.
We are concerned with an initial boundary value problem for the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with viscosity depending on the density. It is show that for the initial density away from vacuum, the strong solution to the problem exists globally if the gradient of velocity satisfies $\|\nabla\mathbf{u}\|_{L^{2}(0,T;L^\infty)}<\infty$. Our method relies upon the delicate energy estimates and elliptic estimates.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the three dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. We first obtain the existence of weak solutions with small $L^2$-norm which may display codimension-one discontinuities in density, pressure, magnetic field and velocity gradient. The weak solutions we consider here exhibit just enough regularity and structure which allow us to develop uniqueness and continuous dependence theory for the compressible MHD equations. Our results generalise and extend those for the intermediate weak solutions of compressible Navier-St…
We prove the global-in-time existence of H^2 solutions of the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics with zero magnetic resistivity in three space dimensions. Initial data are taken to be small in H^2 modulo a constant state and initial densities are positive and essentially bounded. The present work generalizes the results obtained by Kawashima.
In this paper we consider the long time well-posedness of solutions to two dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) boundary layer equations. When the initial data is a small perturbation of a steady solution with size of $\varepsilon$ and the far-field state is also a small perturbation around such a steady solution in Sobolev space, then the lifespan of solutions is proved to be greater than $\varepsilon^{-\frac43}$.
This paper is devoted to the study of the weak-strong uniqueness property for the full compressible magnetohydrodynamics flows. The governing equations for magnetohydrodynamic flows are expressed by the full Navier-Stokes system for compressible fluids enhanced by forces due to the presence of the magnetic field as well as the gravity and with an additional equation which describes the evolution of the magnetic field. Using relative entropy inequality, we prove that a weak solution coincides with the strong solution, emanating from the same initial data, as long as the latter exists.
In this paper, we prove the energy conservation for the weak solutions to the three-dimensional equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamic flows (MHD) under certain conditions only about density and velocity. This work is inspired by the seminal work by Yu [27] on the energy conservation of compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our result indicates that even the magnetic field is taken into account, we only need some regularity conditions of the density and velocity as in [27] to ensure the energy conservation.
We consider an initial-boundary value problem for the one-dimensional equations of compressible isentropic viscous and non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic flows. The global well-posedness of strong solutions with general large data is established. Moreover, the vanishing resistivity limit is justified and the thickness of magnetic boundary layers is analyzed. The proofs of these results are based on a full use of the so-called "effective viscous flux", the material derivative and the structure of the equations.
This paper establishes a blow-up criterion of strong solutions to the two-dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. The criterion depends on the density, but is independent of the velocity and the magnetic field. More precisely, once the strong solutions blow up, the $L^{\infty}$-norm for the density tends to infinity. In particular, the vacuum in the solutions is allowed.
We study an initial boundary value problem for the 3D magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations of compressible fluids in $\R^3$. We establish a blow-up criterion for the local strong solutions in terms of the density and magnetic field. Namely, if the density is away from vacuum ($ρ= 0$) and the concentration of mass ($ρ=\infty$) and if the magnetic field is bounded above in terms of $L^\infty$-norm, then a local strong solution can be continued globally in time.
The three-dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) isentropic flow with zero magnetic diffusivity is studied. The vanishing magnetic diffusivity causes significant difficulties due to the loss of dissipation of the magnetic field. The existence and uniqueness of local in time strong solution with large initial data is established. The strong solution has weaker regularity than the classical solution. A generalized Lax-Milgram theorem and a Schauder-Tychonoff-type fixed point argument are applied with novel techniques and estimates for the strong solution.
We consider the complete system of equations governing the motion of a general compressible, viscous, electrically and heat conductive fluid driven by non-conservative boundary conditions. We show the existence of a bounded absorbing set in the energy space and asymptotic compactness of trajectories. As a corollary, the set of all entire globally bounded solutions is identified as a natural attractor. Examples of boundary conditions giving rise to unbounded solutions are also discussed.
This paper considers the initial boundary problem to the planar compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with large initial data and vacuum. The global existence and uniqueness of large strong solutions are established when the heat conductivity coefficient $κ(θ)$ satisfies \begin{equation*} C_{1}(1+θ^q)\leq κ(θ)\leq C_2(1+θ^q) \end{equation*} for some constants $q>0$, and $C_1,C_2>0$.
In this paper, we address the problem of current-vortex sheets in ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. More precisely, we prove a local-in-time existence and uniqueness result for analytic initial data using a Cauchy-Kowalevskaya theorem.
We address the compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and establish a blow-up criterion for the local strong solutions in terms of the density only. Namely, if the density is away from vacuum ($ρ= 0$) and the concentration of mass ($ρ=\infty$), then a local strong solution can be continued globally in time. The results generalise and strengthen the previous ones in the sense that there is no magnetic field present in the criterion and the assumption on the pressure is significantly relaxed. The proof is based on some new a priori estimates for three-dimensional com…
This paper concerns the Cauchy problem of two-dimensional (2D) full compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in the whole plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ with zero density at infinity. By spatial weighted energy method, we derive the local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions provided that the initial density and the initial magnetic field decay not too slowly at infinity. Note that the initial temperature does not need to decay slowly at infinity. In particular, vacuum states at both the interior domain and the far field are allowed.
We are concerned with the uniform regularity estimates of solutions to the two dimensional compressible non-resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with the no-slip boundary condition on velocity in the half plane. Under the assumption that the initial magnetic field is transverse to the boundary, the uniform conormal energy estimates are established for the solutions to compressible MHD equations with respect to small viscosity coefficients. As a direct consequence, we proved the inviscid limit of solutions from viscous MHD systems to the ideal MHD systems in $L^\infty$ sense. It shows…
We consider the free boundary problem for non-relativistic and relativistic ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics in two and three spatial dimensions with the total pressure vanishing on the plasma--vacuum interface. We establish the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of solutions to this nonlinear characteristic hyperbolic problem under the Rayleigh--Taylor sign condition on the total pressure. The proof is based on certain tame estimates in anisotropic Sobolev spaces for the linearized problem and a modification of the Nash--Moser iteration scheme. Our result is uniform in the light sp…
Global weak solutions and incompressible limit of two-dimensional isentropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with ripped density and large initial data
The existence of global-in-time classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of compressible magnetohydrodynamic flows with zero magnetic diffusivity is considered in two dimensions. The linear structure is a degenerated hyperbolic-parabolic system. The solution is constructed as a small perturbation of a constant background in critical spaces. The deformation gradient is introduced to decouple the subtle coupling between the flow and the magnetic field. The $L^1$ dissipation for the velocity is obtained, and the $L^2$ dissipations for the density and the magnetic field are also achieved.
This article proposes a review of the analysis of the system of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). First, we give an account of the modelling asumptions. Then, the results of existence of weak solutions, using the notion of renormalized solutions. Then, existence of strong solutions in the neighbourhood of equilibrium states is reviewed, in particular with the method of Kawashima and Shizuta. Finally, the special case of dimension one is highlighted : the use of Lagrangian coordinates gives a simpler system, which is solved by standard techniques.
We consider the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid under the mutual interactions with magnetic field. We show that the initial value problem is ill--posed in the class of weak solutions for a large class of physically admissible data. We also consider the same problem for inviscid heat--conductive fluid and show the same result under certain restrictions imposed on the magnetic field. The main tool is the method of convex integration adapted to the Euler system with `variable coefficients'.
We study the structural stability of shock waves and current-vortex sheets in shallow water magnetohydrodynamics (SMHD) in the sense of the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of discontinuous solutions satisfying corresponding jump conditions. The equations of SMHD form a symmetric hyperbolic system which is formally analogous to the system of 2D compressible elastodynamics for particular nonphysical deformations. Using this analogy and the recent results in [Morando A., Trakhinin Y., Trebeschi P. Math. Ann. (2019), https://doi.org/10.1007/s00208-019-01920-6] for shock waves in 2D compress…
In one-dimensional unbounded domains, we consider the equations of a planar compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow with constant viscosity and heat conductivity. More precisely, we prove the global existence of strong solutions to the MHD equations with large initial data satisfying the same conditions as those of Kazhikhov's theory in bounded domains (Kazhikhov 1987 Boundary Value Problems for Equations of Mathematical Physics (Krasnoyarsk)). In particular, our result generalizes the Kazhikhov's theory for the initial boundary value problem in bounded domains to the unbounded case.
We are concerned with the study of the Cauchy problem to the 3D compressible Hall-magnetohydrodynamic system. We first establish the unique global solvability of strong solutions to the system when the initial data are close to a stable equilibrium state in critical Besov spaces. Furthermore, under a suitable additional condition involving only the low frequencies of the data and in $L^{2}$-critical regularity framework, we exhibit the optimal time decay rates for the constructed global solutions. The proof relies on an application of Fourier analysis to a mixed parabolic-hyperbolic system, an…
Global weak solutions of 3D compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations subject to large external potential forces with discontinuous initial data and vacuum
Global weak solutions and incompressible limit to the isentropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations in 2D bounded domains with ripped density and large initial data
The full compressible magnetohydrodynamic system in three-dimensional exterior domains is investigated. For the initial-boundary-value problem of this system with slip boundary condition for the velocity, adiabatic one for the temperature, and perfect one for the magnetic field, the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions is established, under the condition that the initial data are of small energy but possibly large oscillations. In particular, the initial density and temperature are both allowed to vanish. Moreover, the large-time behavior of the classical solutions is also obt…
We are concerned with the uniform regularity estimates and vanishing viscosity limit of solution to two dimensional viscous compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with transverse background magnetic field. When the magnetic field is assumed to be transverse to the boundary and the tangential component of magnetic field satisfies zero Neumann boundary condition, even though the velocity is imposed the no-slip boundary condition, the uniform regularity estimates of solution and its derivatives still can be achieved in suitable conormal Sobolev spaces in the half plane $\mathbb{R}^2_+$…
The low Mach number limit for the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with general initial data is rigorously justified in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^3$. The uniform in Mach number estimates of the solutions in a Sobolev space are obtained on a time interval independent of the Mach number. The limit is proved by using the established uniform estimates and a theorem due to Métiver and Schochet [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 158 (2001), 61-90] for the Euler equations that gives the local energy decay of the acoustic wave equations.
We are concerned with the formation of singularity and breakdown of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero heat conduction. It is proved that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the deformation tensor $\mathfrak{D}(\mathbf{u})$ and the pressure $P$ satisfy $\|\mathfrak{D}(\mathbf{u})\|_{L^{1}(0,T;L^\infty)}+\|P\|_{L^{\infty}(0,T;L^\infty)}<\infty$. In particular, the criterion is independent of the magnetic field. The logarithm-type estimate for the Lam{é} system and s…
The mathematical analysis on the behavior of the entropy for viscous, compressible, and heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic flows near the vacuum region is a challenging problem as the governing equation for entropy is highly degenerate and singular in the vacuum region. In particular, it is unknown whether the entropy remains its boundedness. In the present paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem to the three-dimensional (3D) compressible heat-conducting magnetohydrodynamic equations with vacuum at infinity only. We show that the uniform boundedness of the entropy and the $L^2$ regularities …
We establish the local existence and uniqueness of solutions to the free-boundary ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with surface tension in three spatial dimensions by a suitable modification of the Nash--Moser iteration scheme. The main ingredients in proving the convergence of the scheme are the tame estimates and unique solvability of the linearized problem in the anisotropic Sobolev spaces $H_*^m$ for $m$ large enough. In order to derive the tame estimates, we make full use of the boundary regularity enhanced from the surface tension. The unique solution of the linearized pr…
In this paper, the 3-D compressible MHD equations with initial vacuum or infinity electric conductivity is considered. We prove that the $L^\infty$ norms of the deformation tensor $D(u)$ and the absolute temperature $θ$ control the possible blow-up (see [5][18][20]) for strong solutions, which means that if a solution of the compressible MHD equations is initially regular and loses its regularity at some later time, then the formation of singularity must be caused by losing the bound of $D(u)$ and $θ$ as the critical time approaches. The viscosity coefficients are only restricted by the physic…
In this paper we study the initial-boundary-value problem for the barotropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic system with slip boundary conditions in three-dimensional exterior domain. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the exterior domain problem with the regular initial data that are of small energy but possibly large oscillations with constant state as far field which could be either vacuum or nonvacuum. In particular, the initial density of such a classical solution is allowed to have large oscillations contain vacuum states. Moreover, the large-time…
The authors study the Cauchy problem of the magnetohydrodynamic equations for viscous compressible barotropic flows in two or three spatial dimensions with vacuum as far field density. For two spatial dimensions, we establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions (which may be of possibly large oscillations) provided the smooth initial data are of small total energy, and obtain some a priori decay with rates (in large time) for the pressure, the spatial gradient of both the velocity field and the magnetic field. Moreover, for three spatial dimensions case, some similar decay …
In this paper, we prove a blow-up criterion in terms of the magnetic field $H$ and the mass density $ρ$ for the strong solutions to the $3$D compressible isentropic MHD equations with zero magnetic diffusion and initial vacuum. More precisely, we show that the $L^\infty$ norms of $(H,ρ)$ control the possible blow-up (see \cite{olga}\cite{zx}) for strong solutions, which means that if a solution of the compressible isentropic non-resistive MHD equations is initially smooth and loses its regularity at some later time, then the formation of singularity must be caused by losing the bound of the $L…
We prove the local well-posedness in Sobolev spaces of the free-boundary problem for compressible inviscid resistive isentropic MHD system under the Rayleigh-Taylor physical sign condition, which describes the motion of a free-boundary compressible plasma in an electro-magnetic field with magnetic diffusion. We use Lagrangian coordinates and apply the tangential smoothing method introduced by Coutand-Shkoller to construct the approximation solutions. One of the key observations is that the Christodoulou-Lindblad type elliptic estimate together with magnetic diffusion not only gives the common …
