In this article we describe a canonical way to expand a certain kind of $(\mathbb Z_2)^{n+1}$-colored regular graphs into closed $n$-manifolds by adding cells determined by the edge-colorings inductively. We show that every closed combinatorial $n$-manifold can be obtained in this way. When $n\leq 3$, we give simple equivalent conditions for a colored graph to admit an expansion. In addition, we show that if a $(\mathbb Z_2)^{n+1}$-colored regular graph admits an $n$-skeletal expansion, then it is realizable as the moment graph of an $(n+1)$-dimensional closed $(\mathbb Z_2)^{n+1}$-manifold.
We introduce a representation via (n+1)-colored graphs of compact n-manifolds with (possibly empty) boundary, which appears to be very convenient for computer aided study and tabulation. Our construction is ageneralization to arbitrary dimension of the one recently given by Cristofori and Mulazzani in dimension three, and it is dual to the one given by Pezzana in the seventies. In this context we establish some results concerning the topology of the represented manifolds: suspension, fundamental groups, connected sums and moves between graphs representing the same manifold. Classification resu…
The graph complexity of a compact 3-manifold is defined as the minimum order among all 4-colored graphs representing it. Exact calculations of graph complexity have been already performed, through tabulations, for closed orientable manifolds (up to graph complexity 32) and for compact orientable 3-manifolds with toric boundary (up to graph complexity 12) and for infinite families of lens spaces. In this paper we extend to graph complexity 14 the computations for orientable manifolds with toric boundary and we give two-sided bounds for the graph complexity of tetrahedral manifolds. As a consequ…
This is part 2 of a 3-part article where we provide an $O(n^2)$-algorithm to produce a surgery presentation of a 3-manifold induced by a gem with a resolution. In this part we produce a sequence of colored simplicial 2-complexes which are inverses and dual to the sequence of gems produced in the first part. The refinements of the DPL-faces that keep appearing are idempotent: the second refinement of a DPL-face is isomorphic to its first refinement. This fact inhibits exponentiability.
We introduce a representation of compact 3-manifolds without spherical boundary components via (regular) 4-colored graphs, which turns out to be very convenient for computer aided study and tabulation. Our construction is a direct generalization of the one given in the eighties by S. Lins for closed 3-manifolds, which is in turn dual to the earlier construction introduced by Pezzana's school in Modena. In this context we establish some results concerning fundamental groups, connected sums, moves between graphs representing the same manifold, Heegaard genus and complexity, as well as an enumera…
We consider certain invariants of links in 3-manifolds, obtained by a specialization of the Turaev-Viro invariants of 3-manifolds, that we call colored Turaev-Viro invariants. Their construction is based on a presentation of a pair (M,L), where M is a closed oriented 3-manifold and L is an oriented link in M, by a triangulation of M such that each component of L is an edge. We analyze some basic properties of these invariants, including the behavior under connected sums of pairs away and along links. These properties allow us to provide examples of links in the three-sphere having the same HOM…
It is well-known that in dimension 4 any framed link $(L,c)$ uniquely represents the PL 4-manifold $M^4(L,c)$ obtained from $\mathbb D^4$ by adding 2-handles along $(L,c)$. Moreover, if trivial dotted components are also allowed (i.e. in case of a Kirby diagram $(L^{(*)},d)$), the associated PL 4-manifold $M^4(L^{(*)},d)$ is obtained from $\mathbb D^4$ by adding 1-handles along the dotted components and 2-handles along the framed components. In this paper we study the relationships between framed links and/or Kirby diagrams and the representation theory of compact PL manifolds by edge-colored …
A representation for compact 3-manifolds with non-empty non-spherical boundary via 4-colored graphs (i.e., 4-regular graphs endowed with a proper edge-coloration with four colors) has been recently introduced by two of the authors, and an initial classification of such manifolds has been obtained up to 8 vertices of the representing graphs. Computer experiments show that the number of graphs/manifolds grows very quickly as the number of vertices increases. As a consequence, we have focused on the case of orientable 3-manifolds with toric boundary, which contains the important case of complemen…
We introduce a notion of cross-flips: local moves that transform a balanced (i.e., properly $(d+1)$-colored) triangulation of a combinatorial $d$-manifold into another balanced triangulation. These moves form a natural analog of bistellar flips (also known as Pachner moves). Specifically, we establish the following theorem: any two balanced triangulations of a closed combinatorial $d$-manifold can be connected by a sequence of cross-flips. Along the way we prove that for every $m \geq d+2$ and any closed combinatorial $d$-manifold $M$, two $m$-colored triangulations of $M$ can be connected by …
The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, it provides a review of the links between random tensor models, seen as quantum gravity theories, and the PL-manifolds representation by means of edge-colored graphs (crystallization theory). On the other hand, the core of the paper is to establish results about the topological and geometrical properties of the Gurau-degree (or G-degree) of the represented manifolds, in relation with the motivations coming from physics. In fact, the G-degree appears naturally in higher dimensional tensor models as the quantity driving their 1/N expansion, exac…
The G-degree of colored graphs is a key concept in the approach to Quantum Gravity via tensor models. The present paper studies the properties of the G-degree for the large class of graphs representing singular manifolds (including closed PL manifolds). In particular, the complete topological classification up to G-degree 6 is obtained in dimension 3, where all 4-colored graphs represent singular manifolds.
The idea of studying trisections of closed smooth $4$-manifolds via (singular) triangulations, endowed with a suitable vertex-labelling by three colors, is due to Bell, Hass, Rubinstein and Tillmann, and has been applied by Spreer and Tillmann to colored triangulations associated to the so called simple crystallizations of standard simply-connected $4$-manifolds. The present paper performs a generalization of these ideas along two different directions: first, we take in consideration also compact PL $4$-manifolds with connected boundary, introducing a possible extension of trisections to the b…
We prove that the SU(2) and SO(3) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of any 3-manifold with any colored link inside at any root of unity are algebraic integers.
A strong interaction is known to exist between edge-colored graphs (which encode PL pseudo-manifolds of arbitrary dimension) and random tensor models (as a possible approach to the study of Quantum Gravity). The key tool is the {\it G-degree} of the involved graphs, which drives the {\it $1/N$ expansion} in the tensor models context. In the present paper - by making use of combinatorial properties concerning Hamiltonian decompositions of the complete graph - we prove that, in any even dimension $d\ge 4$, the G-degree of all bipartite graphs, as well as of all (bipartite or non-bipartite) graph…
(d+1)-colored graphs, i.e. edge-colored graphs that are (d+1)-regular, have already been proved to be a useful representation tool for compact PL d-manifolds, thus extending the theory (known as crystallization theory) originally developed for the closed case. In this context, combinatorially defined PL invariants play a relevant role. The present paper focuses in particular on generalized regular genus and G-degree: the first one extending to higher dimension the classical notion of Heegaard genus for 3-manifolds, the second one arising, within theoretical physics, from the theory of random t…
Let be given a {\em colored 3-pseudo-triangulation} $\mathcal{H}^\star$ with $n$ tetrahedra. Colored means that each tetrahedron have vertices distinctively colored 0,1,2,3. In a {\em pseudo} 3-triangulation the intersection of simplices might be subsets of simplices of smaller dimensions (faces), instead of a single maximal face, as for true triangulations. If $\mathcal{H}^\star$ is the dual of a cell 3-complex induced (in an specific way to be made clear) by a pair of Jordan curves with $2n$ transversal crossings, then we show that the induced 3-manifold $|\mathcal{H}^\star|$ is $\mathbb{S}^…
This paper concerns the topology of isospectral real manifolds of certain Jacobi elements associated with real split semisimple Lie algebras. The manifolds are related to the compactified level sets of the generalized (nonperiodic) Toda lattice equations defined on the semisimple Lie algebras. We then give a cellular decomposition and the associated chain complex of the manifold by introducing colored Dynkin diagrams which parametrize the cells in the decomposition. We also discuss the Morse chain complex of the manifold.
For $G$ a commutative group, we give a purely Hopf $G$-coalgebra construction of $G$-colored $3$-manifolds invariants using the notion of modified integral.
We show that the fundamental groups of any two closed irreducible non-geometric graph-manifolds are quasi-isometric. This answers a question of Kapovich and Leeb. We also classify the quasi-isometry types of fundamental groups of graph-manifolds with boundary in terms of certain finite two-colored graphs. A corollary is the quasi-isometry classification of Artin groups whose presentation graphs are trees. In particular any two right-angled Artin groups whose presentation graphs are trees of diameter at least 3 are quasi-isometric, answering a question of Bestvina; further, this quasi-isometry …
We study resurgence for some 3-manifold invariants when $G_{\mathbb{C}}=SL(2, \mathbb{C})$. We discuss the case of an infinite family of Seifert manifolds for general roots of unity and the case of the torus knot complement in $S^3$. Via resurgent analysis, we see that the contribution from the abelian flat connections to the analytically continued Chern-Simons partition function contains the information of all non-abelian flat connections, so it can be regarded as a full partition function of the analytically continued Chern-Simons theory on 3-manifolds $M_3$. In particular, this directly ind…
A connected combinatorial 2-manifold is called degree-regular if each of its vertices have the same degree. A connected combinatorial 2-manifold is called weakly regular if it has a vertex-transitive automorphism group. Clearly, a weakly regular combinatorial 2-manifold is degree-regular and a degree-regular combinatorial 2-manifold of Euler characteristic - 2 must contain 12 vertices. In 1982, McMullen et al. constructed a 12-vertex geometrically realized triangulation of the double-torus in $\RR^3$. As an abstract simplicial complex, this triangulation is a weakly regular combinatorial 2-man…
I give a formula for computing the number of regular $Γ$-coverings of closed orientable Seifert 3-manifolds, for a given finite group $Γ$. The number is computed using a 3d TQFT with finite gauge group, through a cut-and-glue process.
We show that a compact orientable 4-manifold M has a CR regular immersion into C3 if and only if both its first Pontryagin class and its Euler characteristic vanish, and has a CR regular embedding into C3 if and only if in addition the second Stiefel-Whitney class of M vanishes.
We give complete classification of C^2-regular and non-degenerate projectively Anosov flows on three dimensional manifolds. More precisely, we prove that such a flow on a connected manifold must be either an Anosov flow or represented as a finite union of $T^2 \times [0,1]$-models.
