We exhibit infinitely many, explicit special Lagrangian isolated singularities that admit no asymptotically conical special Lagrangian smoothings. The existence/ nonexistence of such smoothings is an important component of the current efforts to understand which singular special Lagrangians arise as limits of smooth special Lagrangians.
We also use soft methods from symplectic geometry (the relative version of the h--principle) and tools from algebraic topology to prove (both positive and negative) results about Lagrangian desingularizations of Lagrangian submanifolds with isolated singularities; we view the Lagrangian desingularization problem as the natural soft analogue of the special Lagrangian smoothing problem.
We find new obstructions to the desingularization of compact Einstein orbifolds by smooth Einstein metrics. These new obstructions, specific to the compact situation, raise the question of whether a compact Einstein $4$-orbifold which is limit of Einstein metrics bubbling out Eguchi-Hanson metrics has to be Kähler. We then test these obstructions to discuss if it is possible to produce a Ricci-flat but not Kähler metric by the most promising desingularization configuration proposed by Page in 1981. We identify $84$ obstructions which, once compared to the $57$ degrees of freedom, indicate that…
We study the problem of desingularizing coassociative conical singularities via gluing, allowing for topological and analytic obstructions, and discuss applications. This extends the author's earlier work on the unobstructed case. We interpret the analytic obstructions geometrically via the obstruction theory for deformations of conically singular coassociative 4-folds, and thus relate them to the stability of the singularities. We use our results to describe the relationship between moduli spaces of coassociative 4-folds with conical singularities and those of their desingularizations. We als…
We study the question of the integrability of Einstein deformations and relate it to the question of the desingularization of Einstein metrics. Our main application is a negative answer to the long-standing question of whether or not every Einstein $4$-orbifold (which is an Einstein metric space in a synthetic sense) is limit of smooth Einstein $4$-manifolds. We more precisely show that spherical and hyperbolic $4$-orbifolds with the simplest singularities cannot be Gromov-Hausdorff limits of smooth Einstein $4$-metrics without relying on previous integrability assumptions. For this, we analyz…

We present a method to desingularize a compact G_2 manifold with isolated conical singularities by cutting out a neighbourhood of each singular point and glueing in an asymptotically conical G_2 manifold. Controlling the error on the overlap glueing region enables us to use a result of Joyce to conclude that the resulting compact smooth 7-manifold admits a torsion-free G_2 structure, with full G_2 holonomy. There are topological obstructions for this procedure to work, which arise from the degree 3 and degree 4 cohomology of the asymptotically conical G_2 manifolds which are glued in at each c…

We consider the problem of finding complete conformal metrics with prescribed curvature functions of the Einstein tensor and of more general modified Schouten tensors. To achieve this, we reveal an algebraic structure of a wide class of fully nonlinear equations. Our method is appropriate and delicate as shown by a topological obstruction. Finally, we discuss Hessian equations and Weingarten equations by confirming a key assumption.

We clarify how close a second order fully nonlinear equation can come to uniform ellipticity, through counting large eigenvalues of the linearized operator. This suggests an effective and novel way to understand the structure of fully nonlinear equations of elliptic and parabolic type. As applications, we solve a fully nonlinear version of the Loewner-Nirenberg problem and a noncompact complete version of fully nonlinear Yamabe problem. Our method is delicate as shown by a topological obstruction.
This paper is devoted to the existence of contact forms of prescribed Webster scalar curvature on a $3-$dimensional CR compact manifold locally conformally CR equivalent to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ of $\mathbb{C}^{2}$. Due to Kazdan-Warner type obstructions, conditions on the function $H$ to be realized as a Webster scalar curvature have to be given. We prove new existence results based on a new type of Euler-Hopf type formula. Our argument gives an upper bound on the Morse index of the obtained solution. We also give a lower bound on the number of conformal contact forms having the sa…
We revisit the problem of prescribing negative Gauss curvature for graphs embedded in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ when $n\geq 2$. The problem reduces to solving a fully nonlinear Monge-Ampère equation that becomes hyperbolic in the case of negative curvature. We show that the linearization around a graph with Lorentzian Hessian can be written as a geometric wave equation for a suitable Lorentzian metric in dimensions $n\geq 3$. Using energy estimates for the linearized equation and a version of the Nash-Moser iteration, we show the local solvability for the fully nonlinear equation. Finally, we discuss …

Given a metrically complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with smooth nonempty boundary and assuming that one of its curvatures is subject to a certain bound, we address the problem of whether it is possibile to realize $(M,g)$ as a domain inside a geodesically complete Riemannian manifold $(M',g')$ without boundary, by preserving the same curvature bounds. In this direction we provide three kind of results: (1) a general existence theorem showing that it is always possible to obtain a geodesically complete Riemannian extension without curvature constraints; (2) various topological obstructions …
