In this paper we construct a simply connected, minimal, complex surface of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=2 using a rational blow-down surgery and Q-Gorenstein smoothing theory.
Motivated by a recent result of Y. Lee and the second author[7], we construct a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=3 using a rational blow-down surgery and Q-Gorenstein smoothing theory. In a similar fashion, we also construct a new simply connected symplectic 4-manifold with b_2^+=1 and K^2=4.
We prove that for any number $r$ in $[2,3]$, there are spin (resp. non-spin minimal) simply connected complex surfaces of general type $X$ with $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ arbitrarily close to $r$. In particular, this shows the existence of simply connected surfaces of general type arbitrarily close to the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau line. In addition, we prove that for any $r \in [1,3]$ and any integer $q\geq 0$, there are minimal complex surfaces of general type $X$ with $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ arbitrarily close to $r$, and $π_1(X)$ isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface of genus $q$.
We show an example of non-simply connected non-liftable Calabi-Yau threefold over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $3$. It is constructed from a simply connected example by S.~Schröer.
We study several questions on the existence of negative Sasakian structures on simply connected rational homology spheres and on Smale-Barden manifolds of the form $\#_k(S^2\times S^3)$. First, we prove that any simply connected rational homology sphere admitting positive Sasakian structures also admits a negative one. This result answers the question, posed by Boyer and Galicki in their book [BG], of determining which simply connected rational homology spheres admit both negative and positive Sasakian structures. Second, we prove that the connected sum $\#_k(S^2\times S^3)$ admits negative qu…
In this paper, we construct simply connected symplectic Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds by applying Gompf's symplectic fiber sum operation along $T^4$. Using our construction, we also produce symplectic non-Kähler Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds with fundamental group $\Z$. In this paper, we also produce the first examples of simply connected symplectic Calabi-Yau and non-Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds via coisotropic Luttinger surgery.
Let BG be a classifying variety for an exceptional simple simply connected algebraic group G. We compute the degree 3 unramified Galois cohomology of BG with values in Q/Z(2) over an arbitrary field F. Combined with a paper by Merkurjev, this completes the computation of these cohomology groups for G semisimple simply connected over all fields. These computations provide another example of a simple simply connected group G such that BG is not stably rational.
We show that the Craighero-Gattazzo surface, the minimal resolution of an explicit complex quintic surface with four elliptic singularities, is simply-connected. This was conjectured by Dolgachev and Werner, who proved that its fundamental group has a trivial profinite completion. The Craighero-Gattazzo surface is the only explicit example of a smooth simply-connected complex surface of geometric genus zero with ample canonical class. We hope that our method will find other applications: to prove a topological fact about a complex surface we use an algebraic reduction mod p technique and defor…
This article proves hypersurfaces of degree d in projective n-space are "rationally simply-connected" if $d^2 \leq n$. In a forthcoming paper, de Jong and I prove a slightly weaker result when $d^2 \leq n+1$.
We construct a simply connected compact manifold which has complex and symplectic structures but does not admit Kähler metrics, in the lowest possible dimension where this can happen, that is, dimension 6. Such a manifold is automatically formal and has even odd-degree Betti numbers but it does not satisfy the Lefschetz property for any symplectic form.
We derive Verlinde's formula from the fixed point formula for loop groups proved in the companion paper "A fixed point formula for loop group actions", and extend it to compact, connected groups that are not necessarily simply-connected.
We prove the existence of $(20-2K^2)$-dimensional families of simply-connected surfaces with ample canonical class, $p_g=1$, and $1 \leq K^2 \leq 9$, and we study the relation with configurations of rational curves in K3 surfaces via $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein smoothings. Our surfaces with $K^2=7$ and $K^2=9$ are the first surfaces known in the literature, together with the existence of a $4$-dimensional family for $K^2=8$.
We prove that the Picard group of a regular simply connected variety over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic is finitely generated. The main difficulty to overcome is the unavailability of resolution of singularities. From this we deduce that in positive characteristic there exist no nontrivial stratified line bundles on such a variety, and we present a complex analog.
We show that there are no non-trivial stratified bundles over a smooth simply connected quasi-projective variety over the algebraic closure of a finite field, if the variety admits a normal projective compactification with boundary locus of codimension $\ge 2$. In the appendix, various strong forms of the Lefschetz LEF are proven. Final version, to appear in Compositio.
In this paper we describe a construction method for numerical Godeaux surfaces based on homological algebra. We show the existence of an 8-dimensional locally complete family of simply connected numerical Godeaux surfaces.
Voisin constructed a series of examples concerning simply connected compact Kähler manifolds of even dimensions, which do not have the rational homotopy type of a complex projective manifold starting from dimension six. In this note, we prove that Voisin's examples of dimension four also does not have the rational homotopy type of a complex projective manifold. Oguiso constructed simply connected compact Kähler manifolds starting from dimension four, which can not deform to a complex projective manifold under a small deformation. We also prove that Oguiso's examples do not have the rational ho…
We construct a new family of simply connected minimal complex surfaces with $p_g=1$, $q=0$, and $K^2=8$ using a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing theory.
We show that simply connected projective manifolds in characteristic $p>0$ have no nontrivial stratified bundles. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture by D. Gieseker. The proof uses Hrushovski's theorem on periodic points.
We prove that a recent construction of a numerical Godeaux surface due to P. Craighero and R. Gattazzo is simply connected, and show how to realize their construction as a double plane. By proving that the surface contains no (-2)-curves, we obtain that this is the first example of a simply connected surface with vanishing geometric genus and ample canonical class.
Algebraically simply connected surfaces of general type with p_g=q=0 and 1\le K^2\le 4 in positive characteristic (with one exception in K^2=4) are presented by using a Q-Gorenstein smoothing of two-dimensional toric singularities, a generalization of Lee-Park's construction in the field of complex numbers to the positive characteristic case, and Grothendieck's specialization theorem for the fundamental group.
We describe a period map for those simply connected Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 whose canonical double cover is K3. The moduli stack for these surfaces has a Deligne-Mumford quotient that is an open substack of a $\mathbb P^1$-bundle over the period space. We also give some general results relating local and global moduli for algebraic varieties and describe the difference in their dimensions in terms of the failure of the automorphism group scheme to be reduced.
A complex projective manifold is rationally connected, resp. rationally simply connected, if finite subsets are connected by a rational curve, resp. the spaces parameterizing these connecting rational curves are themselves rationally connected. We prove that a projective scheme over a global function field with vanishing "elementary obstruction" has a rational point if it deforms to a rationally simply connected variety in characteristic 0. This gives new, uniform proofs over these fields of the Period-Index Theorem, the quasi-split case of Serre's "Conjecture II", and Lang's $C_2$ property.
In 2010 de Jong proposed a $p$-adic version of Gieseker's conjecture: if $X$ is a smooth, simply connected projective variety, then any isocrystal on $X$ is constant. This was proven by Esnault and Shiho under some additional assumptions. We show that the conjecture holds in the case of a non-proper variety with trivial tame fundamental group and for rank 1 log extendable isocrystals.

As the sequel to [5, 7], we construct a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with p_g = 0 and K^2 = 4 by using a rational blow-down surgery and Q-Gorenstein smoothing theory.
The aim of this paper is to give a description of simply connected abelian locally Nash groups of dimension $2$. Along the way we prove that, for any $n\geq 2$, a locally Nash structure over $(\mathbb{R}^n,+)$ can be characterized via a meromorphic map admitting an algebraic addition theorem.
It is conjectured by de Jong that, if $X$ is a connected projective smooth variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with trivial etale fundamental group, any convergent isocrystal $\mathcal{E}$ on $X$ is trivial. We discuss this conjecture when $X$ is liftable to characteristic zero, and prove the triviality of $\mathcal{E}$ in this case under certain conditions on (semi)stability.
We consider the moduli space of flat G-bundles over the twodimensional torus, where G is a real, compact, simple Lie group which is not simply connected. We show that the connected components that describe topologically non-trivial bundles are isomorphic as symplectic spaces to moduli spaces of topologically trivial bundles with a different structure group. Some physical applications of this isomorphism which allows to trade topological non-triviality for a change of the gauge group are sketched.
We obtain a detailed classification for a class of non-simply connected Calabi-Yau threefolds which are of potential interest for a wide range of problems in string phenomenology. These threefolds arise as quotients of Schoen's Calabi-Yau threefolds, which are fiber products over P1 of two rational elliptic surfaces. The quotient is by a freely acting finite abelian group preserving the fibrations. Our work involves a classification of restricted finite automorphism groups of rational elliptic surfaces.
We prove a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on the tangent bundle of the Hilbert schemes of points on a non-compact simply-connected surface. As a corollary, we deduce a closed formula for the Chern character of the tangent bundles of these Hilbert schemes. We also give a closed formula for the multiplicative characteristic classes of the tautological bundles associated to a line bundle on the surface. We finally remark which implications the results here have for the Hilbert schemes of points of an arbitrary surface.
The aim of this paper is to classify simply connected 6-dimensional torus manifolds with vanishing odd degree cohomology. It is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between equivariant diffeomorphism types of these manifolds and 3-valent labelled graphs, called torus graphs introduced by Maeda-Masuda-Panov. Using this correspondence and combinatorial arguments, we prove that a simply connected 6-dimensional torus manifold with vanishing odd degree cohomology is equivariantly diffeomorphic to the 6-dimensional sphere or an equivariant connected sum of copies of 6-dimensional quasitor…
