In this paper we study how to approximate the Leray weak solutions of the incompressible Navier Stokes equation. In particular we describe an hyperbolic version of the so called artificial compressibility method investigated by J.L.Lions and Temam. By exploiting the wave equation structure of the pressure of the approximating system we achieve the convergence of the approximating sequences by means of dispersive estimate of Strichartz type. We prove that the projection of the approximating velocity fields on the divergence free vectors is relatively compact and converges to a Leray weak solution of the incompressible Navier Stokes equation.
In this paper we will prove that suitable weak solutions of three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domain can be constructed by a particular type of artificial compressibility approximation.
The Navier-Stokes-Maxwell-Stefan system describes the dynamics of an incompressible gaseous mixture in isothermal condition. In this paper we set up an artificial compressibility type approximation. In particular we focus on the existence of solution for the approximated system and the convergence to the incompressible case. The existence of the approximating system is proved by means of semidiscretization in time and by estimating the fractional time derivative.
This paper deals with the approximation of the weak solutions of the incompressible Navier Stokes Fourier system. In particular it extends the artificial compressibility method for the Leray weak solutions of the Navier Stokes equation, used by Temam, in the case of a bounded domain and later in the case of the whole space. By exploiting the wave equation structure of the pressure of the approximating system the convergence of the approximating sequences is achieved by means of dispersive estimate of Strichartz type. It will be proved that the projection of the approximating velocity fields on…
In this paper we prove that weak solution constructed by artificial compressibility method are suitable in the sense of Scheffer. Using Hilbertian setting and Fourier transform with respect to the time we obtain nontrivial estimates of the pressure and the time derivate which allow us to pass into the limit.
In this paper we study the Leray weak solutions of the incompressible Navier Stokes equation in an exterior domain. We describe, in particular, an hyperbolic version of the so called artificial compressibility method investigated by J.L.Lions and Temam. The convergence of these type of approximation show in general a lack of strong convergence due to the presence of acoustic waves. In this paper we face this difficulty by taking care of the dispersive nature of these waves by means of the Strichartz estimates or waves equations satisfied by the pressure. We actually decompose the pressure in di…
In this paper we analyze a method of to approximation for the weak solutions of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations (MHD) in unbounded domains. In particular we describe an hyperbolic version of the so called artificial compressibility method adapted to the MHD system. By exploiting the wave equation structure of the approximating system we achieve the convergence of the approximating sequences by means of dispersive estimate of Strichartz type. We prove that the soleinoidal component of the approximating velocity and magnetic fields is relatively compact and converges strongly to…
We establish an asymptotic profile that sharply describes the behavior as $t\to\infty$ for solutions to a non-solenoidal approximation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations introduced by Temam. The solutions of Temam's model are known to converge to the corresponding solutions of the classical Navier-Stokes, e.g., in $L^3\_{\rm loc} (R^+ \times R^3)$, provided $ε\to0$, where $ε>0$ is the physical parameter related to the artificial compressibility term. However, we show that such model is no longer a good approximation of Navier-Stokes for large times: indeed, its solutions can decay m…
We consider a singular limit problem for the Navier-Stokes system of a rotating compressible fluid, where the Rossby and Mach numbers tend simultaneously to zero. The limit problem is identified as the 2-D Navier-Stokes system in the ``horizontal'' variables containing an extra term that accounts for compressibility in the original system.
We shall prove dispersive and smoothing estimates for Bochner type laplacians on some non-compact Riemannian manifolds with negative Ricci curvature, in particular on hyperbolic spaces. These estimates will be used to prove Fujita-Kato type theorems for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We shall also discuss the uniqueness of Leray weak solutions in the two dimensional case.
This paper deals with the combined incompressible quasineutral limit of the weak martingale solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system perturbed by a stochastic forcing term in the whole space. In the framework of ill-prepared initial data, we show the convergence in law to a weak martingale solution of a stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes system. The result holds true for any arbitrary nonlinear forcing term with suitable growth. The proof is based on the analysis of acoustic waves but since we are dealing with a stochastic partial differential equation, the existing deter…
We prove a stability result of constant equilibria for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Poisson system uniform in the inviscid limit. We allow the initial density to be close to a constant and the potential part of the initial velocity to be small independently of the rescaled viscosity parameter $\varepsilon$ while the incompressible part of the initial velocity is assumed to be small compared to $\varepsilon$. We then get a unique global smooth solution. We also prove a uniform in $\varepsilon$ time decay rate for these solutions. Our approach allows to combine the parabolic energy estima…
The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ model for fast rotating geophysical fluids is considered. The Navier-Stokes-$α$ model is a nonlinear dispersive regularization of the exact Navier-Stokes equations obtained by Lagrangian averaging and tend to the Navier-Stokes equations as $α\rightarrow 0^+$. We estimate upper bounds for the dimensions of global attractors and study the dependence of the dimensions on the parameter $α$. All the estimates are uniform in $α$, and our estimate of attractor dimensions remain finite when $α\rightarrow 0^+$.
The uniqueness of entropy solution for the compressible Euler equations is a fundamental and challenging problem. In this paper, the uniqueness of a composite wave of shock and rarefaction of 1-d compressible Euler equations is proved in the inviscid limit of compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, the relative entropy around the original Riemann solution consisting of shock and rarefaction under the large perturbation is shown to be uniformly bounded by the framework developed in \cite{Kang-Vasseur-2021-Invent}. The proof contains two new ingredients: 1) a cut-off technique and the ex…
In this short survey paper, we focus on some new developments in the study of the regularity or potential singularity formation for solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Some of the motivating questions are: Are certain norms accumulating/concentrating on small scales near potential blow-up times? At what speed do certain scale-invariant norms blow-up? Can one prove explicit quantitative regularity estimates? Can one break the criticality barrier, even slightly? We emphasize that these questions are closely linked together. Many recent advances for the Navier-Stokes equations are direct…
We prove the nonlinear stability of the planar viscous shock up to a time-dependent shift for the three-dimensional (3D) compressible Navier-Stokes equations under the generic perturbations, in particular, without zero mass conditions. Moreover, the time-dependent shift function keeps the shock profile shape time-asymptotically. Our stability result is unconditional for the weak planar Navier-Stokes shock. Our proof is motivated by the $a$-contraction method (a kind of weighted $L^2$-relative entropy method) with time-dependent shift introduced in [10,11,13] for the stability of viscous shock …
In this paper, we consider the global well-posedness problem of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space $\R^N$ with $N\ge2$. In order to better reflect the characteristics of the dispersion equation, we make full use of the role of the frequency on the integrability and regularity of the solution, and prove that the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations admit global solutions when the initial data are close to a stable equilibrium in the sense of suitable hybrid Besov norm. As a consequence, the initial velocity with arbitrary $\dot{B}^{\fr{N}{2}-1}_{2,…
We consider the zero-electron-mass limit for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in unbounded spatial domains. Assuming smallness of the viscosity coefficient and ill-prepared initial data, we show that the asymptotic limit is represented by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a Brinkman damping, in the case when viscosity is proportional to the electron-mass, and by the incompressible Euler system provided the viscosity is dominated by the electron mass. The proof is based on the RAGE theorem and dispersive estimates for acoustic waves, and on the concept of suitable weak solutions for…
In this paper we present an alternative viewpoint on recent studies of regularity of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in critical spaces. In particular, we prove that mild solutions which remain bounded in the space $\dot H^{1/2}$ do not become singular in finite time, a result which was proved in a more general setting by L. Escauriaza, G. Seregin and V. Sverak using a different approach. We use the method of "concentration-compactness" + "rigidity theorem" which was recently developed by C. Kenig and F. Merle to treat critical dispersive equations. To the authors' knowledge, this is …

We study the compressible quantum Navier-Stokes (QNS) equations with degenerate viscosity in the three dimensional periodic domains. On the one hand, we consider QNS with additional damping terms. Motivated by the recent works [Li-Xin, arXiv:1504.06826] and [Antonelli-Spirito, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 203(2012), 499--527], we construct a suitable approximate system which has smooth solutions satisfying the energy inequality and the BD entropy estimate. Using this system, we obtain the global existence of weak solutions to the compressible QNS equations with damping terms for large initial da…

This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the initial value problem for the Euler system of compressible fluids and augmented versions containing higher-order terms. We encompass solutions that have finite total energy and enjoy a certain symmetry (for instance, plane symmetry); these solutions may have unbounded amplitude and contain cavitation regions in which the mass density vanishes. In the present paper, we are interested in dispersive shock waves and analyze the zero viscosity-capillarity limit associated with the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system. Specifically, we establish the ex…
We investigate the low Mach number limit for the 3-D quantum Navier-Stokes system. For general ill-prepared initial data, we prove strong convergence of finite energy weak solutions to weak solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our approach relies on a quite accurate dispersive analysis for the acoustic part, governed by the well-known Bogoliubov dispersion relation for the elementary excitations of the weakly-interacting Bose gas. Once we have a control of the acoustic dispersion, the a priori bounds provided by the energy and Bresch-Desjardins entropy type estimates lead t…
In this paper we continue to develop an alternative viewpoint on recent studies of Navier-Stokes regularity in critical spaces, a program which was started in the recent work by C. Kenig and the second author (Ann Inst H Poincaré Anal Non Linéaire 28(2):159-187, 2011). Specifically, we prove that strong solutions which remain bounded in the space $L^3(R^3)$ do not become singular in finite time, a known result established by Escauriaza, Seregin and Sverak (Uspekhi Mat Nauk 58(2(350)):3-44, 2003) in the context of suitable weak solutions. Here, we use the method of "critical elements" which was…
We study mild solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation on the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n \geq 2$. We use dispersive and smoothing estimates proved by Pierfelice on a class of complete Riemannian manifolds to extend the Fujita-Kato theory of mild solutions from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{H}^n$. This includes well-posedness results for $L^n$ initial data and $L^n \cap L^p$ initial data for $1 < p < n$, global in time results for small initial data, and time decay results for the $L^n$ and $L^p$ norms of both $u$ and $\nabla u$. Due to the additional exponential time decay…
