By a Randers' structure on a manifold $M$ we mean a Finsler structure $L^*=L+α$, where $L$ is a Riemannian structure and $α$ is a 1-form on $M$. This structure was first introduced by Randers ~\cite{[8]} from the standpoint of general relativity. In this paper, we replace $L$ by a Finsler structure, calling the resulting manifold a generalized Randers manifold. On one hand, we develop in some depth generalized Randers manifolds. On the other hand, we apply the results obtained in a foregoing paper ~\cite{[12]} to generalized Randers manifolds to obtain some new results in that domain. Among many results, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a generalized Randers manifold to be a general Landsberg manifold. It should be noticed that our approach is in general a global one.
A smooth curve on $G/H$ is called a Riemannian equigeodesic if it is a homogeneous geodesic for all $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics on $G/H$. With the $G$-invariant Riemannian metric replaced by other classes of $G$-invariant metrics, we can similarly define Finsler equigeodesic, Randers equigeodesic, $(α,β)$ equigeodesic, etc. In this paper, we study Randers and $(α,β)$ equigeodesics. For a compact homogeneous manifold, we prove Randers and $(α,β)$ equigeodesics are equivalent, and find a criterion for them. Using this criterion we can classify the equigeodesics on many compact homogeneous m…
In this paper, we investigate the holonomy structure of the most accessible and demonstrative 2-dimensional Finsler surfaces, the Randers surfaces. Randers metrics can be considered as the solutions of the Zermelo navigation problem. We give the classification of the holonomy groups of locally projectively flat Randers two-manifolds of constant curvature. In particular, we prove that the holonomy group of a simply connected non-Riemannian projectively flat Finsler two-manifold of constant non-zero flag curvature is maximal and isomorphic to the orientation preserving diffeomorphism group of th…
In this article we review the recent results about the flag curvature of invariant Randers metrics on homogeneous manifolds and by using a counter example we show that the formula which obtained for the flag curvature of these metrics is incorrect. Then we give an explicit formula for the flag curvature of invariant Randers metrics on the naturally reductive homogeneous manifolds $(G/H,g)$, where the Randers metric induced by the invariant Riemannian metric $g$ and an invariant vector field $\tilde{X}$ which is parallel with $g$.
Using the relativistic Fermat's principle, we establish a bridge between stationary-complete manifolds which satisfy the observer-manifold condition and pre-Randers metrics, namely, Randers metrics without any restriction on the one-form. As a consequence, we give a description of the causal ladder of such spacetimes in terms of the elements associated with the pre-Randers metric: its geodesics and the associated distance. We obtain, as applications of this interplay, the description of conformal maps of Killing submersions, and existence and multiplicity results for geodesics of pre-Randers m…
A Finsler space is called Ricci-quadratic if its Ricci curvature $Ric(x,y)$ is quadratic in $y$. It is called a Berwald space if its Chern connection defines a linear connection directly on the underlying manifold $M$. In this article, we prove that a homogeneous Randers space is Ricci-quadratic if and only if it is of Berwald type.
A linear connection on a Finsler manifold is called compatible to the metric if its parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors. Generalized Berwald manifolds are Finsler manifolds equipped with a compatible linear connection. Since the compatibility to the Finslerian metric does not imply the unicity of the linear connection in general, the first step of checking the existence of compatible linear connections on a Finsler manifold is to choose the best one to look for. A reasonable choice is introduced in \cite{V14} called the extremal compatible linear connection, w…
In some recent papers, the relations existing between the metric properties of Randers spaces and the conformal geometry of stationary Lorentzian manifolds were discovered and investigated. In this note, we focus on the equality between the index of a geodesic in a Randers space and that of its lightlike lift in the associated conformal stationary spacetime. Moreover we make some remarks about regularity of the energy functional of a Finsler metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of $H^1$ curves between two points, in connection with infinite dimensional techniques in Morse Theory.
Integral formulae for foliated Riemannian manifolds provide obstructions for existence of foliations or compact leaves of them with given geometric properties. This paper continues our recent study and presents new integral formulae and their applications for codimension-one foliated Randers spaces. The goal is a generalization of Reeb's formula (that the total mean curvature of the leaves is zero) and its companion (that twice total second mean curvature of the leaves equals to the total Ricci curvature in the normal direction). We also extend results by Brito, Langevin and Rosenberg (that to…
In this paper, we consider a Finsler space with a Randers change of Quartic metric F = $\sqrt[4]{α^4 + β^4} + β$. The conditions for this space to be with reversible geodesics are obtained. Further, we study some geometrical properties of F with reversible geodesics and prove that the Finsler metric F induces a generalized weighted quasi-distance $d_F$ on M.
If a non-reversible Finsler norm is the sum of a reversible Finsler norm and a closed 1-form, then one can uniquely recover the 1-form up to potential fields from the boundary distance data. We also show a boundary rigidity result for Randers metrics where the reversible Finsler norm is induced by a Riemannian metric which is boundary rigid. Our theorems generalize Riemannian boundary rigidity results to some non-reversible Finsler manifolds. We provide an application to seismology where the seismic wave propagates in a moving medium.
In this paper, we study the relationship between isoparametric hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures in Finsler spaces. We give some examples of isoparametric hypersurfaces with (non)constant principal curvatures on Randers manifolds with nonconstant flag curvatures. Furthermore, we construct an example of a conformally flat Randers manifold which admits a family of nonisoparametric hyperplanes with constant principal curvatures.
Recently, wind Riemannian structures (WRS) have been introduced as a generalization of Randers and Kropina metrics. They are constructed from the natural data for Zermelo navigation problem, namely, a Riemannian metric $g_R$ and a vector field $W$ (the wind), where, now, the restriction of mild wind $g_R(W,W)<1$ is dropped. Here, the models of WRS spaceforms of constant flag curvature are determined. Indeed, the celebrated classification of Randers metrics of constant flag curvature by Bao, Robles and Shen, extended to the Kropina case in the works by Yoshikawa, Okubo and Sabau, can be used to…
We generalize and study the Zermelo navigation problem on Hermitian manifolds in the presence of a perturbation $W$ determined by a mild complex velocity vector field $||W(z)||_h<||u(z)||_h$, with application of complex Finsler metric of complex Randers type. By admitting space-dependence of ship's relative speed $||u(z)||_h\leq1$ we discuss the projectively related complex Finsler metrics, the geodesics corresponding to the solutions of Zermelo's problem, in particular the conformal case and the connections between the corresponding background Hermitian metric $h$, new Hermitian metric $a$ an…
We prove that a homogeneous Finsler sphere with constant flag curvature $K\equiv1$ and a prime closed geodesic of length $2π$ must be Riemannian. This observation provides the evidence for the non-existence of homogeneous Bryant spheres. It also helps us propose an alternative approach proving that a geodesic orbit Finsler sphere with $K\equiv1$ must be Randers. Then we discuss the behavior of geodesics on a homogeneous Finsler sphere with $K\equiv1$. We prove that many geodesic properties for homogeneous Randers spheres with $K\equiv1$ can be generalized to the non-Randers case.
We proof that in dimension two, a Finsler metric is Douglas and generalized Berwald, if and only if it is Berwald or a Randers metric $α+ β$, where $β$ is closed and is of constant length with respect to $α$.
In this paper, we prove a global rigidity theorem for negatively curved Finsler metrics on a compact manifold of dimension n>2. We show that for such a Finsler manifold, if the flag curvature is a scalar function on the tangent bundle, then the Finsler metric is of Randers type. We also study the case when the Finsler metric is locally projectively flat.
Recently, we developed a method for the study of holonomy properties of non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds and obtained that the holonomy group can not be a compact Lie group, if the Finsler manifold of dimension $> 2$ has non-zero constant flag curvature. The purpose of this paper is to move further, exploring the holonomy properties of projectively flat Finsler manifolds of non-zero constant flag curvature. We prove in particular that projectively flat Randers and Bryant-Shen manifolds of non-zero constant flag curvature have infinite dimensional holonomy group.
The geometry and analysis on Finsler manifolds is a very important part of Finsler geometry. In this article, we introduce some important and fundamental topics in global Finsler geometry and discuss the related properties and the relationships in them. In particular, we optimize and improve the various definitions of Lie derivatives on Finsler manifolds. We also characterize the gradient vector fields and obtain a gradient estimate for any smooth function on a Randers manifold.
We study extrinsic geometry of a codimension-one foliation ${\cal F}$ of a closed Finsler space $(M,F)$, in particular, of a Randers space $(M,α+β)$. Using a unit vector field $ν$ orthogonal (in the Finsler sense) to the leaves of ${\cal F}$ we define a new Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$, which for Randers case depends nicely on $(α,β)$. For that $g$ we derive several geometric invariants of ${\cal F}$ (e.g. the Riemann curvature and the shape operator) in terms of $F$, then under natural assumptions on $β$ which simplify derivations, we express them in terms of corresponding invariants arising …
By using a certain second order differential equation, the notion of adapted coordinates on Finsler manifolds is defined and some classifications of complete Finsler manifolds are found. Some examples of Finsler metrics, with positive constant sectional curvature, not necessarily of Randers type nor projectively flat, are found. This work generalizes some results in Riemannian geometry and open up, a vast area of research on Finsler geometry.
In this paper we first study some global properties of the energy functional on a non-reversible Finsler manifold. In particular we present a fully detailed proof of the Palais--Smale condition under the completeness of the Finsler metric. Moreover we define a Finsler metric of Randers type, which we call Fermat metric, associated to a conformally standard stationary spacetime. We shall study the influence of the Fermat metric on the causal properties of the spacetime, mainly the global hyperbolicity. Moreover we study the relations between the energy functional of the Fermat metric and the Fe…
An $(α,β)$-manifold $(M,F)$ is a Finsler manifold with the Finsler metric $F$ being defined by a Riemannian metric $α$ and $1$-form $β$ on the manifold $M$. In this paper, we classify $n$-dimensional $(α,β)$-manifolds (non-Randers type) which are positively complete and locally projectively flat. We show that the non-trivial class is that $M$ is homeomorphic to the $n$-sphere $S^n$ and $(S^n,F)$ is projectively related to a standard spherical Riemannian manifold, and then we obtain some special geometric properties on the geodesics and scalar flag curvature of $F$ on $S^n$, especially when $F$…
We extend the notion of the geometric entropy of foliation to foliated manifolds equipped with leafwise Finsler structure. We study the relation between the geometric entropy and the topological entropy of the holonomy pseudogroup. The case of foliated manifold with leafwise Randers structure. In this case the estimates for one dimensional foliation defined by a vector field in term of topological entropy of a flow are presented.
Given a Finsler manifold $(M,F)$, it is proved that the first eigenvalue of the Finslerian $p$-Laplacian is bounded above by a constant depending on $\ p$, the dimension of $M$, the Busemann-Hausdorff volume and the reversibility constant of $(M,F)$. For a Randers manifold $(M,F:=\sqrt{g}+β)$, where $g$ is a Riemannian metric on $M$ and $β$ an appropriate $1$-form on $M$, it is shown that the first eigenvalue $λ_{1,p}(M,F)$ of the Finslerian $p$-Laplacian defined by the Finsler metric $F$ is controled by the first eigenvalue $λ_{1,p}(M,g)$ of the Riemannian $p$-Laplacian defined on $(M,g)$. Fi…
On a Finsler manifold $(M,L)$, we consider the change $L\longrightarrow\bar{L}(x,y)=e^{σ(x)}L(x,y)+β(x,y)$, which we call a $β$-conformal change. This change generalizes various types of changes in Finsler geometry: conformal, $C$-conformal, $h$-conformal, Randers and generalized Randers changes. Under this change, we obtain an explicit expression relating the Cartan connection associated to $(M,L)$ and the transformed Cartan connection associated to $(M,\bar{L})$. We also express some of the fundamental geometric objects (canonical spray, nonlinear connection, torsion tensors, ...etc.) of $(M…
In this paper we introduce the concept of singular Finsler foliation, which generalizes the concepts of Finsler actions, Finsler submersions and (regular) Finsler foliations. We show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a singular Finsler foliation on a Randers manifold $(M,Z)$ with Zermelo data $(\mathtt{h},W),$ then $\mathcal{F}$ is a singular Riemannian foliation on the Riemannian manifold $(M,\mathtt{h} )$. As a direct consequence we infer that the regular leaves are equifocal submanifolds (a generalization of isoparametric submanifolds) when the wind $W$ is an infinitesimal homothety of $\mathtt{h}$ …
The class of generalized Berwald metrics contains the class of Berwald metrics. In this paper, we characterize two-dimensional generalized Berwald $(α, β)$-metrics with vanishing S-curvature. Let $F=αϕ(s)$, $s=β/α$, be a two-dimensional generalized Berwald $(α,β)$-metric on a manifold $M$. Suppose that $F$ has vanishing S-curvature. We show that one of the following holds: (i) if $F$ is a regular metric, then it reduces to a Riemannian metric of isotropic sectional curvature or a locally Minkowskian metric; (ii) if $F$ is an almost regular metric that is not Riemannian nor locally Minkowskian,…
In 1972, K. Kenmotsu studied a class of almost contact Riemannian manifolds. Later, such a manifold was called a Kenmotsu manifold. This paper, we studied Kenmotsu manifolds with $(2n+s)$-dimensional $s-$contact metric manifold and this manifold, we have called generalized Kenmotsu manifolds. Necessary and sufficient condition is given for an almost $s-$contact metric manifold to be a generalized Kenmotsu manifold. We show that a generalized Kenmotsu manifold is a locally warped product space. In addition, we study some curvature properties of generalized Kenmotsu manifolds. Moreover, we show t…
In this paper, invariant submanifolds of a generalized Kenmotsu manifold are studied. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given on a submanifold of a generalized Kenmotsu manifold to be an invariant submanifold. In this case, we investigate further properties of invariant submanifolds of \ a generalized Kenmotsu manifold. In addition, some theorems are given related to an invariant submanifold of a generalized Kenmotsu manifold. We consider semiparallel and 2-semiparallel invariant submanifolds of a generalized Kenmotsu manifold.
In this paper, we construct a new class of Finsler manifolds called generalized isotropic Berwald manifolds which is an extension of the class of isotropic Berwald manifolds. We prove that every generalized isotropic Berwald manifold is a generalized Douglas-Weyl manifold. On a compact generalized isotropic Berwald manifold, we show that the notions of stretch and Landsberg curvatures are equivalent. Then we prove that on these manifolds, a Finsler metric is R-quadratic if and only if it is a stretch metric with vanishing E -curvature. Finally, we determine the flag curvature of generalized is…
The present paper deals with the study of generalized $ϕ$-recurrent generalized $(k,μ)$-contact metric manifolds with the existence of such notion by a proper example.
We study generalized Kaehler manifolds for which the corresponding complex structures commute and classify completely the compact generalized Kaehler four-manifolds for which the induced complex structures yield opposite orientations.
In this study, we investigate generalized quasi-Einstein structure for normal metric contact pair manifolds. Firstly, we deal with elementary properties and examine, existence, and characterizations of generalized quasi-Einstein normal metric contact pair manifold. Secondly, the generalized quasi-constant curvature of normal metric contact pair manifolds are studied and it is proven that a normal metric contact pair manifold with generalized quasi-constant curvature is a generalized quasi-Einstein manifold. Normal metric contact pair manifolds satisfying cyclic Ricci tensor and the Codazzi typ…
To generalize the notion of recurrent manifold, there are various recurrent like conditions in the literature. In this paper we present a recurrent like structure, namely, \textit{super generalized recurrent manifold}, which generalizes both the hyper generalized recurrent manifold and weakly generalized recurrent manifold. The main object of the present paper is to study the geometric properties of super generalized recurrent manifold. Finally to ensure the existence of such structure we present a proper example by a suitable metric.
We initiate the study of the generalized quaternionic manifolds by classifying the generalized quaternionic vector spaces, and by giving two classes of nonclassical examples of such manifolds. Thus, we show that any complex symplectic manifold is endowed with a natural (nonclassical) generalized quaternionic structure, and the same applies to the heaven space of any three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl space. In particular, on the product $Z$ of any complex symplectic manifold $M$ and the sphere there exists a natural generalized complex structure, with respect to which $Z$ is the twistor space of …
The object of the present paper is to obtain the characterization of a warped product semi-Riemannian manifold with a special type of recurrent like structure, called super generalized recurrent. As consequence of this result we also find out the necessary and sufficient conditions for a warped product manifold to satisfy some other recurrent like structures such as weakly generalized recurrent manifold, hyper generalized recurrent manifold etc. Finally as a support of the main result, we present an example of warped product super generalized recurrent manifold.
We construct a natural generalized complex structure on the total space of any bundle endowed with a Chern connection and whose typical fibre is a homogeneous symplectic manifold. This extends known constructions of generalized complex structures on Lie groups and leads to natural examples of holomorphic maps between generalized complex manifolds.
In the paper we present results about generalized Berwald surfaces involving the intrinsic characterization, some topological obstructions for the base manifold and examples.
In this paper, we extend the study of generalized Killing spinors on Riemannian Spin$^c$ manifolds started by Moroianu and Herzlich to complex Killing functions. We prove that such spinor fields are always real Spin$^c$ Killing spinors or imaginary generalized Spin$^c$ Killing spinors, providing that the dimension of the manifold is greater or equal to 4. Moreover, we classify Riemannian Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying imaginary and imaginary generalized Killing spinors.
Tanno [6] provided an algebraic characterization in an almost Hermitian manifold to reduce to a space of constant holomorphic sectional curvature, which he later extended for the Sasakian manifolds as well. In this present paper, we generalize the same characterization in generalized $g.f.f-$manifolds.
We study differential forms and their higher-order generalizations by interpreting them as functions on map spaces. We get a series of approximations of "generalized manifolds" (i.e. of sheaves and stacks) somewhat akin to Taylor series.
Generalized Roter type manifold is a generalization of conformally flat manifold as well as Roter type manifold, which gives rise the form of the curvature tensor in terms of algebraic combinations of the fundamental metric tensor and Ricci tensors upto level 2. The object of the present paper is to investigate the characterizations of a warped product manifold to be generalized Roter-type. We also present an example of a warped product manifold which is generalized Roter type but not Roter type, and also an example of a warped product manifold which is Roter type but not conformally flat. The…
A generalized Stiefel manifold is the manifold of orthonormal frames in a vector space with a non-degenerated bilinear or hermitian form. In this article, the Isometry group of the generalized Stiefel manifolds are computed at least up to connected components in an explicit form. This is done by considering a natural non-associative algebra $\mathfrak{m}$ associated to the affine structure of the Stiefel manifold, computing explicitly the automorphism group $Aut(\mathfrak{m})$ and inducing this computation to the Isometry group.
Conformally flat pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with generalized Ricci recurrent, $(GR)_n$ structure are completely classified in this short report. A conformally flat generalized Ricci recurrent pseudo-Riemannian manifold is shown to be either a de Sitter space or an anti-de Sitter space. In particular, a conformally flat generalized Ricci recurrent spacetime must be either a de Sitter spacetime or an anti-de Sitter spacetime.
In this paper, we establish a generalized maximum principle for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As corollaries, Omori-Yau type maximum principles for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are deduced. Moreover, we prove that the stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian is equivalent to the validity of a weak form of the generalized maximum principles. Finally, we give some applications of these generalized maximum principles.
In this paper, we first get a criterion formula for whether a differential form is holomorphic with respect to the generalized complex structure induced by $ε$. Next, we get the local extensions of $\overline\partial$-closed forms on a smooth family of compact generalized Hermitian manifolds by using this criterion. Finally, as an application, we use this extension to get the invariance of the generalized Hodge number of the deformations of compact generalized Hermitian manifolds with $\partial\overline\partial$-lemma holds.
Let (g,b,J_+,J_-) be the bihermitian structure corresponding to a generalized Kaehler structure. We find natural integrability conditions under which db=0.
