We discuss measures, invariant measures on definable groups, and genericity, often in an NIP (failure of the independence property) environment. We complete the proof of the third author's conjectures relating definably compact groups $G$ in saturated $o$-minimal structures to compact Lie groups. We also prove some other structural results about such $G$, for example the existence of a left invariant finitely additive probability measure on definable subsets of $G$. We finally introduce a new notion "compact domination" (domination of a definable set by a compact space) and raise some new conjectures in the $o$-minimal case.
For G a group definable in an NIP theory we prove that there is a smallest type-definable subgroup H of G such that the quotient G/H is stable. This generalizes the existence of G^00, the smallest type-definable subgroup of G of bounded index.
We consider profinite groups as 2-sorted first order structures, with a group sort, and a second sort which acts as an index set for a uniformly definable basis of neighbourhoods of the identity. It is shown that if the basis consists of {\em all} open subgroups, then the first order theory of such a structure is NIP (that is, does not have the independence property) precisely if the group has a normal subgroup of finite index which is a direct product of finitely many compact $p$-adic analytic groups, for distinct primes $p$. In fact, the condition NIP can here be weakened to NTP${}_2$. We al…
We study definable topological dynamics of some algebraic group actions over an arbitrary NIP field $K$. We show that the Ellis group of the universal definable flow of $\mathrm{SL}_2(K)$ is non-trivial if the multiplicative group of $K$ is not type-definably connected, providing a way to find multiple counterexamples to the Ellis group conjecture, particularly in the case of dp-minimal fields. We also study some structure theory of algebraic groups over $K$ with definable f-generics.
Let $\mathcal{R}$ be an $\mathrm{NIP}$ expansion of $(\mathbb{R},<,+)$ by closed subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and continuous functions $f : \mathbb{R}^m \to \mathbb{R}^n$. Then $\mathcal{R}$ is generically locally o-minimal. It follows that if $X \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is definable in $\mathcal{R}$ then the $C^k$-points of $X$ are dense in $X$ for any $k \geq 0$. This follows from a more general theorem on $\mathrm{NIP}$ expansions of locally compact groups, which itself follows from a result on quotients of definable sets by equivalence relations which are externally definable and $\bigwedge$-d…
We study generically stable measures in the local, NIP context. We show that in this setting, a measure is generically stable if and only if it admits a natural finite approximation.
In light of a gap found by Krupiński, we give a new proof of associativity for the Morley (or "nonforking") product of invariant measures in NIP theories.
We study the definable topological dynamics $(G(M), S_G(M))$ of a definable group acting on its type space, where $M$ is either an $o$-minimal structure or a $p$-adically closed field, and $G$ a definable amenable group. We focus on the problem raised by Neweslki of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types, showing that the answer is positive when $G$ has boundedly many global weakly generic types. We also give two "minimal counterexamples" where $G$ has unboundedly many global weakly generic types, extending the main results of "On minimal flows, definably amenable gro…
We study some dynamical aspects of the action of automorphisms in model theory in particular in the presence of invariant measures. We give some characterizations for NIP theories in terms of dynamics of automorphisms and invariant measures for example in terms of compact systems, entropy and measure algebras. Moreover, we study the concept of symbolic representation for models. Amongst the results, we give some characterizations for dividing lines and combinatorial configurations such as independence property, order property and strictly order property in terms of symbolic representations.
We study definably amenable NIP groups. We develop a theory of generics, showing that various definitions considered previously coincide, and study invariant measures. Applications include: characterization of regular ergodic measures, a proof of the conjecture of Petrykowski connecting existence of bounded orbits with definable amenability in the NIP case, and the Ellis group conjecture of Newelski and Pillay connecting the model-theoretic connected component of an NIP group with the ideal subgroup of its Ellis enveloping semigroup.
We study and characterize stability, NIP and NSOP in terms of topological and measure theoretical properties of classes of functions. We study a measure theoretic property, `Talagrand's stability', and explain the relationship between this property and NIP in continuous logic. Using a result of Bourgain, Fremlin and Talagrand, we prove the `almost definability' and `Baire~1 definability' of coheirs assuming NIP. We show that a formula $ϕ(x,y)$ has the strict order property if and only if there is a convergent sequence of continuous functions on the space of $ϕ$-types such that its limit is not…
The derivation on the differential-valued field $\mathbb{T}_{\log}$ of logarithmic transseries induces on its value group $Γ_{\log}$ a certain map $ψ$. The structure $Γ= (Γ_{\log},ψ)$ is a divisible asymptotic couple. In~\cite{gehret} we began a study of the first-order theory of $(Γ_{\log},ψ)$ where, among other things, we proved that the theory $T_{\log} = \operatorname{Th}(Γ_{\log},ψ)$ has a universal axiomatization, is model complete and admits elimination of quantifiers (QE) in a natural first-order language. In that paper we posed the question whether $T_{\log}$ has NIP (i.e., the Non-In…
We develop local NIP group theory in the context of pseudofinite groups. In particular, given a sufficiently saturated pseudofinite structure $G$ expanding a group, and left invariant NIP formula $δ(x;\bar{y})$, we prove various aspects of "local fsg" for the right-stratified formula $δ^r(x;\bar{y},u):=δ(x\cdot u;\bar{y})$. This includes a $δ^r$-type-definable connected component, uniqueness of the pseudofinite counting measure as a left-invariant measure on $δ^r$-formulas, and generic compact domination for $δ^r$-definable sets.
Let $T$ be a consistent o-minimal theory extending the theory of densely ordered groups and let $T'$ be a consistent theory. Then there is a complete theory $T^*$ extending $T$ such that $T$ is an open core of $T^*$, but every model of $T^*$ interprets a model of $T'$. If $T'$ is NIP, $T^*$ can be chosen to be NIP as well. From this we deduce the existence of an NIP expansion of the real field that has no distal expansion.
We solve two problems from the paper "On maximal stable quotients of definable groups in NIP theories" by M. Haskel and A. Pillay, which concern maximal stable quotients of groups type-definable in NIP theories. The first result says that if $G$ is a type-definable group in a distal theory, then $G^{st}=G^{00}$ (where $G^{st}$ is the smallest type-definable subgroup with $G/G^{st}$ stable, and $G^{00}$ is the smallest type-definable subgroup of bounded index). In order to get it, we prove that distality is preserved under passing from $T$ to the hyperimaginary expansion $T^{heq}$. The second r…
We initiate a systematic study of the convolution operation on Keisler measures, generalizing the work of Newelski in the case of types. Adapting results of Glicksberg, we show that the supports of generically stable (or just definable, assuming NIP) measures are nice semigroups, and classify idempotent measures in stable groups as invariant measures on type-definable subgroups. We establish left-continuity of the convolution map in NIP theories, and use it to show that the convolution semigroup on finitely satisfiable measures is isomorphic to a particular Ellis semigroup in this context.
First, an example of a 2-dependent group without a minimal subgroup of bounded index is given. Second, all infinite n-dependent fields are shown to be Artin-Schreier closed. Furthermore, the theory of any non separably closed PAC field has the IPn property for all natural numbers n and certain properties of dependent (NIP) valued fields extend to the n-dependent context.
We present a systematic study of the regularity phenomena for NIP hypergraphs and connections to the theory of (locally) generically stable measures, providing a model-theoretic hypergraph version of the results from [L. Lovász, B. Szegedy, "Regularity partitions and the topology of graphons", An irregular mind, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010, 415-446]. Besides, we revise the two extremal cases of regularity for stable and distal hypergraphs, improving and generalizing the results from [A. Chernikov, S. Starchenko, "Regularity lemma for distal structures", J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 2437-…
Fix an abelian group $Γ$ and an injective endomorphism $F \colon Γ\to Γ$. Improving on the results of Bell and Moosa, new characterizations are here obtained for the existence of spanning sets, $F$-automaticity, and $F$-sparsity. The model theoretic status of these sets is also investigated, culminating with a combinatorial description of the $F$-sparse sets that are stable in $(Γ, +)$, and a proof that the expansion of $(Γ, +)$ by any $F$-sparse set is NIP. These methods are also used to show for prime $p\ge 7$ that the expansion of $(\mathbb{F}_p[t], +)$ by multiplication restricted to $t^\m…
This is a largely expository paper about how groups arise or are of interest in model theory. Included are the following topics: classifying groups definable in specific structures or theories and the relation to algebraic groups, groups definable in stable, simple and NIP theories, definable compactifications of groups, definable Galois theory (including differential Galois theory), connections with topological dynamics, model theory of the free group.
Fix a weakly minimal (i.e., superstable $U$-rank $1$) structure $\mathcal{M}$. Let $\mathcal{M}^*$ be an expansion by constants for an elementary substructure, and let $A$ be an arbitrary subset of the universe $M$. We show that all formulas in the expansion $(\mathcal{M}^*,A)$ are equivalent to bounded formulas, and so $(\mathcal{M},A)$ is stable (or NIP) if and only if the $\mathcal{M}$-induced structure $A_{\mathcal{M}}$ on $A$ is stable (or NIP). We then restrict to the case that $\mathcal{M}$ is a pure abelian group with a weakly minimal theory, and $A_{\mathcal{M}}$ is mutually algebraic…
There exist NIP and non-NTP$_2$ theories satisfying all the following conditions: It is not o-minimal; All models are strongly locally o-minimal; It has a model which is an expansion of the linearly ordered abelian group over the reals $(\mathbb R\;;\;0,+,<)$. We construct these examples using the notion of simple product.
Let X be a closed subset of a locally compact second countable group G whose family of translates has finite VC-dimension. We show that the topological border of X has Haar measure 0. Under an extra technical hypothesis, this also holds if X is constructible. We deduce from this generic compact domination for definably amenable NIP groups.
We present the (Lascar) Galois group of any countable theory as a quotient of a compact Polish group by an $F_σ$ normal subgroup: in general, as a topological group, and under NIP, also in terms of Borel cardinality. This allows us to obtain similar results for arbitrary strong types defined on a single complete type over $\emptyset$. As an easy conclusion of our main theorem, we get the main result from our recent paper joint with Andand Pillay, which says that for any strong type defined on a single complete type over $\emptyset$, smoothness is equivalent to type-definability. We also explai…
We study definably amenable groups in NIP theories, and answer a question of Newelski (and also of Chernikov-Simon), by giving an example in the o-minimal context where weak generic types do not coincide with almost periodic types, equivalently where the union of the minimal subflows of suitable type spaces is not closed. We give other positive results in this o-minimal context.
We consider definable topological dynamics for $NIP$ groups admitting certain decompositions in terms of specific classes of definably amenable groups. For such a group, we find a description of the Ellis group of its universal definable flow. This description shows that the Ellis group is of bounded size. Under additional assumptions, it is shown to be independent of the model, proving a conjecture proposed by Newelski. Finally we apply the results to new classes of groups definable in o-minimal structures, generalizing all of the previous results for this setting.
