Let $T>0$ fixed. We consider the optimal control problem for analytic affine systems: $\ds{\dot{x}=f\_0(x)+\sum\_{i=1}^m u\_if\_i(x)}$, with a cost of the form: $\ds{C(u)=\int\_0^T \sum\_{i=1}^m u\_i^2(t)dt}$. For this kind of systems we prove that if there are no minimizing abnormal extremals then the value function $S$ is subanalytic. Secondly we prove that if there exists an abnormal minimizer of corank 1 then the set of end-points of minimizers at cost fixed is tangent to a given hyperplane. We illustrate this situation in sub-Riemannian geometry.
An extended quadratic function is a quadratic function plus the indicator function of an affine set, that is, a quadratic function with embedded linear equality constraints. We show that, under some technical conditions, random convex extended quadratic functions are closed under addition, composition with an affine function, expectation, and partial minimization, that is, minimizing over some of its arguments. These properties imply that dynamic programming can be tractably carried out for stochastic control problems with random affine dynamics and extended quadratic cost functions. While the…
A Deterministic affine quadratic optimal control problem is considered. Due to the nature of the problem, optimal controls exist under some very mild conditions. Further, it is shown that under some assumptions, the value function is differentiable and therefore satisfies the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation in the classical sense. Moreover, the so-called quasi-Riccati equation is derived and any optimal control admits a state feedback representation.
In this paper, we solve a maximization problem where the objective function is quadratic and convex or concave and the constraints set is the reachable value set of a convergent discrete-time affine system. Moreover, we assume that the matrix defining the system is diagonalizable. The difficulty of the problem lies in the infinite sequence to handle in the constraint set. Equivalently, the problem requires to solve an infinite number of quadratic programs. Therefore, the main idea is to extract a finite of them and to guarantee that the resolution of the extracted problems provides the optimal…
For homogeneous bilinear control systems, the control sets are characterized using a Lie algebra rank condition for the induced systems on projective space. This is based on a classical Diophantine approximation result. For affine control systems, the control sets around the equilibria for constant controls are characterized with particular attention to the question when the control sets are unbounded.
- In this paper we introduce a new method to solve fixed-delay optimal control problems which exploits numerical homotopy procedures. It is known that solving this kind of problems via indirect methods is complex and computationally demanding because their implementation is faced with two difficulties: the extremal equations are of mixed type, and besides, the shooting method has to be carefully initialized. Here, starting from the solution of the non-delayed version of the optimal control problem, the delay is introduced by numerical homotopy methods. Convergence results, which ensure the eff…
In this paper, we study some bounds for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programs. We propose two types of bounds for quadratically constrained quadratic programs, quadratic and cubic bounds. For quadratic bounds, we use affine functions as Lagrange multipliers. We demonstrate that most semi-definite relaxations can be obtained as the dual of a quadratic bound. In addition, we study bounds obtained by changing the ground set. For cubic bounds, in addition to affine multipliers we employ quadratic functions. We provide a comparison between the proposed cubic bound and typical bound…
We introduce a new technique to optimize a linear cost function subject to a one-dimensional affine homogeneous quadratic integral inequality, i.e., the requirement that a homogeneous quadratic integral functional, affine in the optimization variables, is non-negative over a space of functions defined by homogeneous boundary conditions. Such problems arise in stability analysis, input-to-state/output analysis, and control of many systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs), in particular fluid dynamical systems. First, we derive outer approximations for the feasible set of a homo…
In this paper, we study the performance of affine policies for two-stage adjustable robust optimization problem with fixed recourse and uncertain right hand side belonging to a budgeted uncertainty set. This is an important class of uncertainty sets widely used in practice where we can specify a budget on the adversarial deviations of the uncertain parameters from the nominal values to adjust the level of conservatism. The two-stage adjustable robust optimization problem is hard to approximate within a factor better than $Ω\left( \frac{\log n}{\log \log n} \right)$ even for budget of uncertain…
It is known that the Frank-Wolfe (FW) algorithm, which is affine-covariant, enjoys accelerated convergence rates when the constraint set is strongly convex. However, these results rely on norm-dependent assumptions, usually incurring non-affine invariant bounds, in contradiction with FW's affine-covariant property. In this work, we introduce new structural assumptions on the problem (such as the directional smoothness) and derive an affine invariant, norm-independent analysis of Frank-Wolfe. Based on our analysis, we propose an affine invariant backtracking line-search. Interestingly, we show …
The objective of this document is to design continuous feedback controls for global asymptotic stabilization (GAS) of affine systems, with control restricted to a compact and convex set (CVS). This stabilization problem is solved based on a design of a feedback function restricted to the hyperbox and obtained by means of the CLF theory. By "normalizing" this feedback, the continuous stabilizer restricted to CVS is obtained.
Affine forms are a common way to represent convex sets of $\mathbb{R}$ using a base of error terms $ε\in [-1, 1]^m$. Quadratic forms are an extension of affine forms enabling the use of quadratic error terms $ε_i ε_j$. In static analysis, the zonotope domain, a relational abstract domain based on affine forms has been used in a wide set of settings, e.g. set-based simulation for hybrid systems, or floating point analysis, providing relational abstraction of functions with a cost linear in the number of errors terms. In this paper, we propose a quadratic version of zonotopes. We also present a …
This paper concerns portfolio selection with multiple assets under rough covariance matrix. We investigate the continuous-time Markowitz mean-variance problem for a multivariate class of affine and quadratic Volterra models. In this incomplete non-Markovian and non-semimartingale market framework with unbounded random coefficients, the optimal portfolio strategy is expressed by means of a Riccati backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). In the case of affine Volterra models, we derive explicit solutions to this BSDE in terms of multi-dimensional Riccati-Volterra equations. This framew…
This paper establishes several upper and lower estimates for the maximal number of the connected components of the solution sets of monotone affine vector variational inequalities. Our results give a partial solution to Question~2 in [N.D. Yen and J.-C. Yao, \textit{Monotone affine vector variational inequalities}, Optimization 60 (2011), pp. 53--68] and point out that the number depends not only on the number of the criteria but also on the number of variables of the vector variational inequality under investigation.
This paper studies the decentralized quadratic cheap talk and signaling game problems when an encoder and a decoder, viewed as two decision makers, have misaligned objective functions. The main contributions of this study are the extension of Crawford and Sobel's cheap talk formulation to multi-dimensional sources and to noisy channel setups. We consider both (simultaneous) Nash equilibria and (sequential) Stackelberg equilibria. We show that for arbitrary scalar sources, in the presence of misalignment, the quantized nature of all equilibrium policies holds for Nash equilibria in the sense th…

We consider two polytopes. The quadratic assignment polytope $QAP(n)$ is the convex hull of the set of tensors $x\otimes x$, $x \in P_n$, where $P_n$ is the set of $n\times n$ permutation matrices. The second polytope is defined as follows. For every permutation of vertices of the complete graph $K_n$ we consider appropriate $\binom{n}{2} \times \binom{n}{2}$ permutation matrix of the edges of $K_n$. The Young polytope $P((n-2,2))$ is the convex hull of all such matrices. In 2009, S. Onn showed that the subgraph isomorphism problem can be reduced to optimization both over $QAP(n)$ and over $P(…
This paper addresses the inverse optimal control problem of finding the state weighting function that leads to a quadratic value function when the cost on the input is fixed to be quadratic. The paper focuses on a class of infinite horizon discrete-time and continuous-time optimal control problems whose dynamics are control-affine and whose cost is quadratic in the input. The optimal control policy for this problem is the projection of minus the gradient of the value function onto the space formed by all feasible control directions. This projection points along the control direction of steepes…
