The theory of abelian categories proved very useful, providing an axiomatic framework for homology and cohomology of modules over a ring and, in particular, of abelian groups. For many years, a similar categorical framework has been lacking for non-abelian (co)homology, the subject of which includes the categories of non-abelian groups, of rings, Lie algebras, etc. The notion of semi-abelian category due to Janelidze, Marki and Tholen allows a unified study of many important homological properties of such categories. For instance, in any semi-abelian category, the classical diagram lemmas (the Short Five Lemma, the 3x3 Lemma, the Snake Lemma, Noether's Isomorphism Theorems) hold. The point of this thesis is, that the semi-abelian framework is indeed perfectly suited for the study of non-abelian (co)homology and the corresponding homotopy theory. It describes the foundations for a categorical homology theory that unifies many basic aspects of the classical (co)homology theories of e.g., groups, Lie algebras and crossed modules. Starting from homology of (proper) chain complexes and of simplicial objects, a semi-abelian version of Barr-Beck cotriple homology is introduced. A systematic study of the theory of Baer invariants in this context yields categorical versions of Hopf's formula (describing the second homology object in terms of commutators) and the Stallings-Stammbach sequence. We obtain a Universal Coefficient Theorem, a version of the Hochschild-Serre sequence, and an interpretation of the second cohomology group in terms of isomorphism classes of central extensions. Also, Quillen model category structures for homotopy of simplicial objects and internal categories are studied, and are shown to be compatible with the respective semi-abelian notions of homology.
We define the Hochschild and cyclic (co)homology groups for superadditive categories and show that these (co)homology groups are graded Morita invariants. We also show that the Hochschild and cyclic homology are compatible with the tensor product of superadditive categories.
We prove and explain several classical formulae for homotopy (co)limits in general (combinatorial) model categories which are not necessarily simplicially enriched. Importantly, we prove versions of the Bousfield-Kan formula and the fat totalization formula in this complete generality. We finish with a proof that homotopy-final functors preserve homotopy limits, again in complete generality.
In the first part of this paper we show that path categories are enriched over groupoids, in a way that is compatible with a suitable 2-category of path categories. In the second part we introduce a new notion of homotopy exponential and homotopy Pi-type for path categories, the strong homotopy exponential and the strong homotopy Pi-type. We prove some of their basic properties, along with two important technical propositions. The results in the second part of this paper are mostly obtained using the groupoid enrichment of path categories established in the first part.
We show that the free construction from multicategories to permutative categories is a categorically-enriched non-symmetric multifunctor. Our main result then shows that the induced functor between categories of algebras is an equivalence of homotopy theories. We describe an application to ring categories.
We show that each of the three $K$-theory multifunctors from small permutative categories to $\mathcal{G}_*$-categories, $\mathcal{G}_*$-simplicial sets, and connective spectra, is an equivalence of homotopy theories. For each of these $K$-theory multifunctors, we describe an explicit homotopy inverse functor. As a separate application of our general results about pointed diagram categories, we observe that the right-induced homotopy theory of Bohmann-Osorno $\mathcal{E}_*$-categories is equivalent to the homotopy theory of pointed simplicial categories.
Thomason's Homotopy Colimit Theorem has been extended to bicategories and this extension can be adapted, through the delooping principle, to a corresponding theorem for diagrams of monoidal categories. In this version, we show that the homotopy type of the diagram can be also represented by a genuine simplicial set nerve associated with it. This suggests the study of a homotopy colimit theorem, for diagrams $\b$ of braided monoidal categories, by means of a simplicial set {\em nerve of the diagram}. We prove that it is weak homotopy equivalent to the homotopy colimit of the diagram, of simplic…
We lift Charles Rezk's complete Segal space model structure on the category of simplicial spaces to a Quillen equivalent one on the category of relative categories.
Centers of categories capture the natural operations on their objects. Homotopy coherent centers are introduced here as an extension of this notion to categories with an associated homotopy theory. These centers can also be interpreted as Hochschild cohomology type invariants in contexts that are not necessarily linear or stable, and we argue that they are more appropriate to higher categorical contexts than the centers of their homotopy or derived categories. Among many other things, we present an obstruction theory for realizing elements in the centers of homotopy categories, and a Bousfield…
Generalizing the approach to pseudo monoidal DG-categories as certain colored non-symmetric DG-operads, we introduce a certain relaxed notion of a category enriched in DG-categories. We construct model structures on the category of colored non-symmetric DG-operads and on the category of DGCat-enriched categories with a fixed set of objects. This allows us to talk about strong homotopy maps in both settings. We discuss the notion of a strong homotopy monad in a DG-category and a notion of strong homotopy adjunction data for two DG-functors.
Generalizing a definition of homotopy fiber products of model categories, we give a definition of the homotopy limit of a diagram of left Quillen functors between model categories. As has been previously shown for homotopy fiber products, we prove that such a homotopy limit does in fact correspond to the usual homotopy limit, when we work in a more general model for homotopy theories in which they can be regarded as objects of a model category.
We develop a homotopy theory of categories enriched in a monoidal model category V. In particular, we deal with homotopy weighted limits and colimits, and homotopy local presentability. The main result, which was known for simplicially-enriched categories, links homotopy locally presentable V-categories with combinatorial model V-categories, in the case where has all objects of V are cofibrant.
Building on a previous definition of homotopy limit of model categories, we give a definition of homotopy colimit of model categories. Using the complete Segal space model for homotopy theories, we verify that this definition corresponds to the model-category-theoretic definition in that setting.
In this paper, we apply an explicit construction of a simplicial powering in dg-categories, due to Holstein (2016) and Arkhipov and Poliakova (2018), as well as our own results on homotopy ends (Arkhipov and Ørsted 2018), to obtain an explicit model for the homotopy limit of a cosimplicial system of dg-categories. We apply this to obtain a model for homotopy descent in terms of $\mathrm{A}_{\infty}$-comodules, proving a conjecture by Block, Holstein, and Wei (2017) in the process.
We prove that the homotopy prederivator of a cofibration category is equivalent to the homotopy prederivator of its associated quasi-category of frames, as introduced by Szumiło. We use this comparison result to deduce various abstract properties of the obtained prederivators.
We show that the homotopy colimit construction for diagrams of categories with an operad action, recently introduced by Fiedorowicz, Stelzer and Vogt, has the desired homotopy type for diagrams of weak braided monoidal categories. This provides a more flexible way to realize E-2 spaces categorically.
Ideals are used to define homological functors for additive categories. In abelian categories the ideals corresponding to the usual universal objects are principal, and the construction reduces, in a choice dependent way, to homology groups. Applications are considered: derived categories and functors.
We introduce some classes of genuine higher categories in homotopy type theory, defined as well-behaved subcategories of the category of types. We give several examples, and some techniques for showing other things are not examples. While only a small part of what is needed, it is a natural construction, and may be instructive for people seeking to provide a fully general construction.
We address the (pointed) homotopy of crossed module morphisms in modified categories of interest; which generalizes the groups and various algebraic structures. We prove that, the homotopy relation gives rise to an equivalence relation; furthermore a groupoid structure, without any restriction on neither domain nor co-domain of the crossed module morphism. Additionally, we consider the particular cases such as associative algebras, Leibniz algebras, Lie algebras and dialgebras of crossed modules of this generalized homotopy definition. Then as the main part of the paper, we prove that the func…
It is known that, for $C$ an abelian category and $I$ small, the functor category $C^I$ is again abelian; thus we can do homology in such categories, and examine how it relates to homology in $C$ itself. However, there does not seem to be any good reference collecting these ideas together. This article seeks to fill the gap by showing that homology in $C^I$ behaves as one would expect.
We extend the Quillen Theorem Bn for homotopy fibers of Dwyer, et al. to similar results for homotopy pullbacks and note that these results imply similar results for zigzags in the categories of relative categories and k-relative categories, not only with respect to their Reedy structures but also their Rezk structure, which turns them into models for the theories of (infinity, 1)- and (infinity, k)-categories, respectively.
Let $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ be an extriangulated category. Given a composition of two commutative squares in $\mathcal{C}$, if two commutative squares are homotopy cartesian, then their composition is also a homotopy cartesian. This covers the result by Mac Lane (1998) for abelian categories and the result by Christensen and Frankland (2022) for triangulated categories.
We show how matrix problems (bimodule categories) can be used in studying triangulated categories. Then we apply the general technique to the classification of stable homotopy types of polyhedra, find out the "representation types" of such problems and give a description of stable homotopy types in finite and tame cases.
We consider a theory of centers and homotopy centers of monoids in monoidal categories which themselves are enriched in duoidal categories. Duoidal categories (introduced by Aguillar and Mahajan under the name 2-monoidal categories) are categories with two monoidal structures which are related by some, not necessary invertible, coherence morphisms. Centers of monoids in this sense include many examples which are not `classical.' In particular, the 2-category of categories is an example of a center in our sense. Examples of homotopy center (analogue of the classical Hochschild complex) include …
In this paper we show that both the homotopy category of strict $n$-categories, $1\leqslant n \leqslant \infty$, and the homotopy category of Steiner's augmented directed complexes are equivalent to the category of homotopy types. In order to do so, we first prove an abstract result, based on a strategy of Fritsch and Latch, giving sufficient conditions for a nerve functor with values in simplicial sets to induce an equivalence at the level of homotopy categories. We then apply this result to strict $n$-categories and augmented directed complexes, for which the hypothesis of our theorem were e…
This is the third paper in a series. In part I we developed a deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we show how this theory can be used to study deformations of objects in homotopy and derived categories of abelian categories. Then we consider examples from (noncommutative) algebraic geometry. In particular, we study noncommutative Grassmanians that are true noncommutative moduli spaces of structure sheaves of projective subspaces in projective spaces.
In proper homotopy theory, the original concept of point used in the classical homotopy theory of topological spaces is generalized in order to obtain homotopy groups that study the infinite of the spaces. This idea: "Using any arbitrary object as base point" and even "any morphism as zero morphism" can be developed in most of the algebraic homotopy theories. In particular, categories with a natural cone have a generalized homotopy theory obtained through the relative homotopy relation. Generalized homotopy groups and exact sequences of them are built so that respective classical pointed ones …
We define a notion of groupoidal 2-quasi-categories and show that they are the fibrant objects of a model structure on the category of $Θ_2$-sets. We show that this model category is Quillen equivalent to the Kan-Quillen model category of simplicial sets and that 2-truncated groupoidal 2-quasi-categories are models for homotopy 2-types.
In order to apply nonstandard methods to questions of algebraic geometry we continue our investigation from "Enlargements of categories" (Theory Appl. Categ. 14 (2005), No. 16, 357--398) and show how important homotopical constructions behave under enlargements.
We define weak 2-categories of finite dimensional algebras with bimodules, along with collections of operators $\mathbb{O}_{(c,x)}$ on these 2-categories. We prove that special examples $\mathbb{O}_p$ of these operators control all homological aspects of the rational representation theory of the algebraic group $GL_2$, over a field of positive characteristic. We prove that when $x$ is a Rickard tilting complex, the operators $\mathbb{O}_{(c,x)}$ honour derived equivalences, in a differential graded setting. We give a number of representation theoretic corollaries, such as the existence of tigh…
This paper gives an introduction to the homotopy theory of quasi-categories. Weak equivalences between quasi-categories are characterized as maps which induce equivalences on a naturally defined system of groupoids. These groupoids effectively replace higher homotopy groups in quasi-category homotopy theory.
It has been proved by Bergh and Thaule that the higher mapping cone axiom is equivalent to the higher octahedral axiom for n-angulated categories. In this note, we use homotopy cartesian diagrams to give several new equivalent statements of the higher mapping cone axiom, which are applied to explain the higher octahedral axiom.
We introduce, for every positive integer n, the notion of an n-relative category and show that the category of the small n-relative categories is a model for the homotopy theory of n-fold homotopy theories, i.e. homotopy theories of ... of homotopy theories.
The main theorem in this paper is that the base change functor from a noetherian abelian category to its noetherian polynomial category induces an isomorphism on K-theory. The main theorem implies the well-known fact that A^1-homotopy invariance of K'-theory for noetherian schemes.
Evidence is given for the correctness of the Joyal-Riehl-Verity construction of the homotopy bicategory of the $(\infty, 2)$-category of $(\infty, 1)$-categories; in particular, it is shown that the analogous construction using complete Segal spaces instead of quasicategories yields a bicategorically equivalent 2-category.
Let $D$ be a large category which is cocomplete. We construct a model structure (in the sense of Quillen) on the category of small functors from $D$ to simplicial sets. As an application we construct homotopy localization functors on the category of simplicial sets which satisfy a stronger universal property than the customary homotopy localization functors do.
We prove that the homotopy theory of cofibration categories is equivalent to the homotopy theory of cocomplete quasicategories. This is achieved by presenting both homotopy theories as fibration categories and constructing an explicit equivalence between them.
The main objective of this paper is to construct a symmetric monoidal closed model category of coherently commutative monoidal quasi-categories. We construct another model category structure whose fibrant objects are (essentially) those coCartesian fibrations which represent objects that are known as symmetric monoidal quasi-categories in the literature. We go on to establish a Quillen equivalence between the two model categories.
We provide a criterion for the existence of right approximations in cocomplete additive categories; it is a straightforward generalisation of a result due to El Bashir. This criterion is used to construct adjoint functors in homotopy categories. Applications include the study of (pure) derived categories. For instance, it is shown that the pure derived category of any module category is compactly generated.
We give sufficient conditions for the existence of a Quillen model structure on small categories enriched in a given monoidal model category. This yields a unified treatment for the known model structures on simplicial, topological, dg- and spectral categories. Our proof is mainly based on a fundamental property of cofibrant enriched categories on two objects, stated below as the Interval Cofibrancy Theorem.
Like categories, small 2-categories have well-understood classifying spaces. In this paper, we deal with homotopy types represented by 2-diagrams of 2-categories. Our results extend to homotopy colimits of 2-functors lower categorical analogues that have been classically used in algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory, such as the Homotopy Invariance Theorem (by Bousfield and Kan), the Homotopy Colimit Theorem (Thomason), Theorems A and B (Quillen), or the Homotopy Cofinality Theorem (Hirschhorn).
Implementing an idea due to John Baez and James Dolan we define new invariants of Whitney stratified manifolds by considering the homotopy theory of smooth transversal maps. To each Whitney stratified manifold we assign transversal homotopy monoids, one for each natural number. The assignment is functorial for a natural class of maps which we call stratified normal submersions. When the stratification is trivial the transversal homotopy monoids are isomorphic to the usual homotopy groups. We compute some simple examples and explore the elementary properties of these invariants. We also assign …
This is the first draft of a book about higher categories approached by iterating Segal's method, as in Tamsamani's definition of $n$-nerve and Pelissier's thesis. If $M$ is a tractable left proper cartesian model category, we construct a tractable left proper cartesian model structure on the category of $M$-precategories. The procedure can then be iterated, leading to model categories of $(\infty, n)$-categories.
Magnitude is a numerical invariant of enriched categories, including in particular metric spaces as $[0,\infty)$-enriched categories. We show that in many cases magnitude can be categorified to a homology theory for enriched categories, which we call magnitude homology (in fact, it is a special sort of Hochschild homology), whose graded Euler characteristic is the magnitude. Magnitude homology of metric spaces generalizes the Hepworth--Willerton magnitude homology of graphs, and detects geometric information such as convexity.
We study Morse theory on noncompact manifolds equipped with exhaustions by compact pieces, defining the Morse homology of a pair which consists of the manifold and related geometric/homotopy data. We construct a collection of Morse data parametrized by cubes of arbitrary dimensions. From this collection, we obtain a family of linear maps subject to some coherency conditions, which can be packaged into a homotopy coherent diagram. We introduce a chain complex which is a colimit for the diagram and show that it computes the Morse homology.
We construct a new cylinder object for semifree differential graded (dg) categories in the category of dg categories. Using this, we give a practical formula computing homotopy colimits of semifree dg categories. Combining it with the result of Ganatra, Pardon, and Shende, we get a formula computing wrapped Fukaya categories of Weinstein manifolds using their sectorial coverings. This formula has lots of applications including a practical computation of the wrapped Fukaya category of any cotangent bundle or plumbing space. In this paper, we compute wrapped Fukaya categories of cotangent bundle…
